Long time lurker, first time poster, been a Prince fan since 1982, been through Prince all his ups and downs his happy and sad clowns. I like this new song a lot having listened to it all this week, sure Purple and Gold wasn't funk-worthy, but it was a rousing song for a football team, whether it gets that crowd stomping and geared up for the match is another matter.
Cause and Effect aint classic Prince by a long shot, but it's damn good, he's been doung lots of fantastic stuff recently, PFunk, Lotusflow3er (the Lotusflow3er disc in particular) The Rainbow Children (even though I don't agree with the Jehovah Witmess concept). I may seem like one of these fans that would like a bootleg of Prince scrunching up a piece of paper and blowing his nose on it and call it funky, but I do know when he aint all there (New Power Soul, most of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic, Come, Musicology.....) Even back in 1990 people (not on the internet off course) were crying about how bad Grafetti Bridge was (it aint that bad), and the Batman album (Arms of Orion has to go!), I remember when The Most Beautiful Girl In The World came out a radio station had a phone in and most of the fans were ranting to how twee and simplistic it was (I still have problems with the so-called classic song). I just had to stand up for this song because IT AINT THAT BAD, sure people aint going to like it, but it's the viciousness of some of the posts, it's almost like some people are taking it personally that Prince isn't classic anymore. Personally, I think he's harking back to one of his first icons Jimi Hendrix, very prominently stated in the Lotusflow3er disc with all the Hendrix references, maybe he wants to get back to those days when he would just play in a club with a group of friends, it's just his ego that's getting in the way.

Hi, welcome to the org, your a bit brave saying that Cause and Effect is better than the albums stated above but after all we have different opinions, i think the above are great especially Come and Musicology but i still like Cause And Effect. But prepare yourself for ppl to say this or that is better than.... happens here alot. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

Thanks for the welcome, not saying that those forementioned albums were bad, just lower in the ranks if I had to list his songs, some songs on those albums would be worse that Cause and Effect, in my opinion. But then I rank Cloreen, Bacon Skin very highly, so what would I know..... [Edited 3/6/10 3:07am]

Quite an average song to me. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

Even saying "It ain't that bad" pretty much shows where things have gone with his music

well, I initially didnt like it, now it has grown on me and I stuck it on my Ipod with Lotus and PFunk where it seems to fit nicely in a quirky kind of way.
Prince sounds genuinely happy singing it and blazing those rich guitar lines through it. Every day should b a COSMIC DAY!

I loved the new song. I understand the people who try to break it down. I sounds like so and so...great. He didn't invent the wheel. But the people who simply hate it and rant on and on. I don't understand the need to bash the song like it's the worst they've ever heard. Seriously, if you've nothing good to say, keep it to yourself.
The funny thing. I used to love this site. I could have a discussion about it. Where a song goes, where it misses it mark. Where it's brilliant. Now, every other post is how much they "hate the song", "how they hate Prince". How "Prince is washed up"...got no time for that. You don't get him anymore, he's not the old Prince you signed up for? Then do us all a favor and move on with your life. Take your own advice I do. Thanks very much. But if no one spoke up about the negativity on this site, it would simply go on and on. The constant complaining here is such a fucking drag, so I come here for the news, and an occasional comment or general discussion. Ben should just rename the site. It has very little to do with being a Prince fan. If I had the time, I could come up with dozens of new names for it. But, Prince.org is not one of them. Not sure I would agree that Prince's fans are lacking something, that's the source of the problems here (other than the disrespectful nature of the dialog). I think expectations are just too high, and Prince will never meet everyone's expectations. For me, I have always loved the way Prince presented material that was challenging and daring, both musically and lyrically. There are albums I could listen to for hours, like a Miles Davis record. And though I feel that has tailed off much of the last decade, I still enjoy much of what he has produced. - JD

The best about Cause&Effect : it's a sign of life from Prince
A song with lot's of dynamic guitar-play and various musical ideas put together into one..... My fav part - aside the "I am here..."-intro, which is bringing back some enthusiastic memories from Montreux - is def the "voicebox/..need compassion"-part !! That could be a theme for a song seperately imho ! In this case I would say : sometimes less is more Still looking forward to new music to come.

Unfettered JOY and RELEASE that is a part of his best music, whether it is about sex, dance, music, romance, or spirituality! I hope and pray that he continues to find enjoyment and fulfillment in his craft--without that, it is a hollow exercise! Inspiration is the word...and it can be hard to come by! "Cause And Effect" is the title to a Jesse Johnson CD, not The Time's Jesse Johnson but another guy. I think it's more than a coincidence that Prince used the name. I bet it's a nod to the "Shockadelica" incident. My apologies if this has been mentioned before. http://www.myspace.com/je...nsononline
