What I find baffling is why a musician of Prince's immense talent would find this song interesting or creatively satisfying. Certainly, I think it is cool to occasionally just knock out the occasional fun tune and chuck it out there for the hell of it - there's no harm in that at all. On the other hand, this kinda of suffocating self-regard and braggadocio can be hard to stomach.

When he's feeling introspective, there's no doubt Prince is very capable of writing some thoughtful, sincere lyrics at times. This kind of bizarre self-conscious boastfulness is best left to the kids though. Prince can do whatever he wants, but personally I don't enjoy this song at all.

Am I missing something? This seems to me to be just a song saying all the things that have happened in his life have led him to be the the man he is today. Where is the bragging and self-regard? Don't we all feel this way about our lives?

Why can't Prince release a song without so many fans acting like its the apocylapse if they don't like it? U would think this is the first song we have heard from Prince in a decade or something. We just got 3 cd's worth of material from him in 2009 and people are acting like that was a million years ago.Its crazy.

I waited a couple of days and two stickies of drivel....but i can't wait anymore...i know my prince....this is a good song, guvs...good lyrics too...just bcoz u have a platform to air ur opinion doesn't mean it has to be important....i liked it..no `private joy', but a neat little thing...treasure this new prince...reminds me of sachin tendulkar's latter phase....

This song really isn't that bad.
Maybe not a timeless classic but it's perfectly enjoyable, and the performance is excellent, as always

a little bit, yeah. It certainly doesn't feel like Lovesexy where you have insane sounds you've never heard before & is thick with style

It's a lot closer to Right the Wrong, a highly competent performance of a mediocre song.

It might be fun live

Some orgers can't accept a track from Prince that isn't a top ten hit with corroborating rave reviews from every notable critic. Some of Prince's best work are songs that were considered filler on their corresponding albums or b-sides. not every song needs to be a chart topper to be validated as great.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Listening again to the old and new music--I find that all I want Prince to continue in his music is his JOY in making music! Unfettered JOY and RELEASE that is a part of his best music, whether it is about sex, dance, music, romance, or spirituality! That, in a nutshell, is what I want to see him continue in his live performances and in recording. I hope and pray that he continues to find enjoyment and fulfillment in his craft--without that, it is a hollow exercise! Inspiration is the word...and it can be hard to come by! I hope he finds it for future musical endeavors--whether it be religious or otherwise...because with inspiration, the spiritual music can be truly inspiring, as well as secular music! biggrin

The problem with blind "hardcore" (that is how you define yourself) fans like you is that they wouldn't know a pathetic Prince song if it bit you on the ass

Ooh, good comeback my soulless friend. I didn't describe myself anyway really but thanks for trying. There are plenty of songs of his I don't like. I thought the Vikings fight song was a total dud, BUT Cause and Effect is brilliant. Call me a fam, call me a fan. whatever suits your fancy. Safe to say, anyone who enjoyed C and E, awesome. Didn't like it? At the very least go back to NewKidsontheBlock.org. They've been patiently waiting for your return.

what, are we suppossed to love everything he does?. P has always provoked extreme reactions and some of us , like it or not, choose to express our likes / dislikes more forcefully than others. Fact about the new song - you can't polish a turd!. A lot us here love the man and just get so damn frustrated that he seems unable or unwilling to use his God given talents to full effect. Changing his sound and lyrical style should only be admired if it is done for better and NOT worse.

I don't think being a Fan means you have to like everything or not criticise the music.

It does seem however that certain fans can't accept that there are still alot of fans/people like still think he's releasing some great stuff. They seem to think we are somehow fooling ourselves.

Personally I'm a little baffled why those that think he has only produced crap in the last 15 or so years are still around, they must have loved the earlier stuff.

for me he took took a dip around 1996 through til 2006, with some really good stuff released mixed in with below par stuff such as alot of the NPGMC club tracks and the boring One Nite Alone. Then with 2006 and the release of 3121 for me he started releasing highly enjoyable albums again.
Something BIG Is Coming.

This track has been played a couple of times since the release... and I can truly say... I don't like it... that doesn't make me a bad fan... It just makes me a honest fan...

No, we're not supposed to love everything he does. But when he makes a great song, and you miss the boat. Just admit you don't get it and move on. Don't complain on and on and on about it. There are plenty of songs of his I don't like. Do I complain about endlessly? No. I wouldn't waste my time. You didn't get it. So be it. I loved the new song. I understand the people who try to break it down. I sounds like so and so...great. He didn't invent the wheel. But the people who simply hate it and rant on and on. I don't understand the need to bash the song like it's the worst they've ever heard. Seriously, if you've nothing good to say, keep it to yourself.
The funny thing. I used to love this site. I could have a discussion about it. Where a song goes, where it misses it mark. Where it's brilliant. Now, every other post is how much they "hate the song", "how they hate Prince". How "Prince
is washed up"...got no time for that. You don't get him anymore, he's not the old Prince you signed up for? Then do us all a favor and move on with your life.

If you like the song, that's awesome. Don't let my dumb opinions ruin your day.

Maybe some of us are just out-growing Prince a bit. I have enjoyed all of his albums, but recently there has been a slight sense that Prince's world is currently too small and insular to make him an interesting artist. So we end up with songs about how much loves his guitar, or how great his career has been etc. What's next, songs about changing strings? Songs about synth patches? Songs about copyright violation? Er actually we've probably had that last one...

The man is still an amazing musician, but I can't remember the last time I felt his work had something to say. Or rather, when he does have something to say it is usually so juvenile, so lacking in self-awareness, or so drenched in religious dogma that it wasn't worth a second listen. In my opinion.
