Kool-aid drinker and sheep, I'll give you are insulting which is why I do try not to use those terms when making my points but Fam(s) was a term of "endearment" coined by none other than Prince himself. So if you've got a problem being called a "fammy fam" for the record, that's not exactly the fault of "the haters". shrug

Prince used the term 'fam' as a term of endearment towards his fans.

There is nothing endearing about the way 'haterz' use the term or any derivative of it.

I firmly believe Prince invented the term simply for control. You don't charge your own family for membership. He was simply praying on emotion to create sales.

Its nothing more than an underhand marketing ploy. Make the fan feel they are invited into an "inner circle" and they jump at the chance.

He's trying the same ploy with the new site. but I think he will be suprised at the volume of fans that won't / haven't lapped it up this time.

The OP seems to have abandoned the thread which, incidentally began with his own negativity laced rant, but anyhoo...

The only thing I can tell ya Kem is first, to remember that this is not Prince's own fansite...it's Ben's fansite. Therefore, it's ultimately his perogative to decide what content is acceptable, end of story.

Now if you find harsh criticism of Prince so disturbing that you feel compelled to comment on it, I would encourage you to get some perspective. Of the thousands of fans Prince has worldwide, a small percentage of them belong to fansites. Of those fansite members, only a small percentage are regular posters on the forums and of those, perhaps a dozen or so, are serial posters of extremely negative comments...ya see where I'm going with this? You could estimate that you're probably steaming from your ears about less than one percent of Prince's fanbase and I would tell Prince himself the same thing.

I'll say the same thing that I've said about a thousand times here already. Everybody knows the difference between someone engaging in discussions of differing opinions and a serial poster who's trolling for attention. The only effective method of dealing with the problem is to STOP RESPONDING TO THEM! For the life of me I can't understand why people don't get that. I know it's hard to do but besides reporting them over and over, it really is the only thing that works, trust me.

So chillax and have a coke and a smile already...coke biggrin

I pretty much agree with you. You are 100% correct when you said there are, "... perhaps a dozen or so, are serial posters of extremely negative comments."

But they tend to post so much it becomes near impossible to ignore them. Its easy to not post in threads they start or just never quote them etc... but these guys don't rack up thousands of post by just being conent to say tgier peace and that be the end.

They can start a 'I hate MPLSound thread.'... but then will go post a dozen times saying the same 'I hate...' message in every single thread with the title of the album or any song from it. Everywhere you look.. there they go.

and oh yeah.. I forgot about the true trolls who start up multiple accounts for the sole purpose of trying to bait and flame in anonymity

I agree that avoiding them isn't easy at first especially because the majority of people have to do it in order for it to work. But there's a few posters here who always feel compelled to engage trolls each and every time they start some mess and that's how the post counts get so high.

I guarantee that if they got ignored enough you would see much less baiting. Serial posters don't care about any discussion, their motive is to make every thread about them and the more attention they get the more they act out.

Ah, those would be the serial idolaters and they have a higher purpose based on their "special" connection with P. Whereas those labeled haters generally kick into high gear when Prince is active, the "true devotees" are on the job 24/7/365 and are duty bound to delve into every circumstance of his existence even when nothing in particular is going on. Not to be confused with those who simply dig most every album he releases...that's just an average fam. lol

The extremes on both sides screw up the whole forum.

LOL... ain't that the truth.

I'm more tolerant of the 'true devotees' as you call 'em... because normally.. they are harmless. Even in debates or arguments... they can't be taken seriously. And even if they get too aggressive in a thread... start a another one about Prince's hat size or something and they'll just forget about the argument thread and droll for a day or two about his hat size..

With the latest album, there seem to be more long term fans than ever seemingly drawing their own conclusions that the genius of Prince is something that only now pops up on an occasional track or two, rather than in the swathes they were used to in his prime.

Couple that with 13 years of broken promises, questionable business practices and paranoid lawsuits, and you end up with a fan base that is less forgiving than it was.

That's why I want to perform shaken baby syndrome on folks when they have the NERVE to generalize Prince's fan base as plain bitchy. Reasons aint just an Earth Wind & Fire song folks!

I love this whole diversity.

We’ve got long time org participators.

We’ve the begrudging housequakers whose house finally got busted.

We’ve got the homeless NPGMC fams who have nowhere to idolise or bitch because their master took away their keys to the official playground.

We’ve got orgers with 5000 posts who list themselves as moderate fans.

We’ve got people with 10,000 posts who don’t own a copy all of Prince’s albums.

We’ve got members who spend almost their entire org life in Michael Jackson threads or the general discussion forum.

We’ve got people new or casual fans who think that Lotusflow3r is original or progressive.

We’ve got old skoolers who are blind to anything but the work of the 80’s.

We’ve got some permanent trollers and stirrers with nothing better in their lives.

We’ve got racists, sexists, deranged and geniuses.

And it’s great that we have this mix.

The org isn’t full of hate or love for Prince. It’s full of people with opinions on the Artist that brought them to the org in the first place. One mans SOTT is another mans New Power Soul.

So for me, the worst element of the org is the people who feel compelled to moan about other members expressing opinions. Every few days we get a fam pop up with a "why all the hate?" type rant. Its not hate, its just opinion that differs from their own, and they can’t stand that.

There is no doubt that this type of spiteful posting hugely increased shortly after the closure of the NPGMC forum. There is obviously an element that does not want a bad word said about Prince and feel like the need to protect without question.

In the process of spreading their spiteful comments about others expressing their opinion, they then have the cheek to label the people who speak freely as "haters".

There is also a growing element of fams who can’t comprehend that it’s ok to be on this site and not enjoy the current music.

The fact of the matter is, someone might only like 3 albums in the 80’s, but they have every right to participate in the forum and express their love for that music, and their displeasure of everything else.

This thread is a prime example of yet another "oppressing opinion" thread, doing nothing more than generalising, ranting and telling people, if you only like the older stuff, then you are not welcome.

Sad really.

I just wanted to thank you for acknowledging the geniuses cool

I have never understood the 'over' reaction from his fan base over the term 'fam'. Almost every artist out there claims to 'love' their fans and says so with regularity. Many say or do thing s to draw them closer or create a perceived closeness with their fans. Prince is no exception...but many of you act as if he's the only artist to ever do this.

Prince is 1/2 a generation removed from me. In the midwest.... we used the term 'fam' to refer to actually family... friends... etc. It was never that big of a deal and is why I never took exception to it one way or another. 'Fam' ,'folks', 'peeps', 'cuz'...are all used in the same way (and in certain areas denotes gang affiliation). It wasn't until I came across fans from other areas that I realized the extreme reactions from the fan base of the term.

On one side... those who are gullible enough to believe Prince views them as family. These are the over 'zealous fanatics'... but again not exclusive to just Prince. On the other extreme... those who see some devious conspiracy behind using the term. Many in the fan base have gotten carried away and given power to the term to one extreme or the other term... and blames Prince for the hyperbole they created surrounding the term 'fam'.

Somethings are what they are... rather than what 'we' turned them into.

The reaction is over Prince's direct involvement in exploiting and creating divisions in the fan base. He didn't create that term out of love, it was a way of gathering a base of troops who would be more than willing to side on the stiffling of dissent or anything critical when it comes to anything Prince.

I think he created the term because he is disturbed by fans, and justified that feeling with the realization that the term means "fanatic."

I don't think it was created out of love but rather out of his desire for fans to not act like nuts & scare him, but to act like family. Maybe that's why he gives parties for celebrities. He is beginning to realize he can be comfortable around stars because they don't treat each other like stars. His 1995 dream to turn fans into fams has not been realized, so he figures he'll hang w/Paris Hilton.

Funny thing is, family will often tell you you're full of shit when no one else will. And that's just what certain orgers do (whether I agree with them or not) They are the true "fams" who are not bound by their love of Prince to worship everything he does. Those who get called "fams" are really still "fans" lol

So careful what you wish for, I guess.

And on the other there are the "fans" who are just plain delusional; they make up posts asking why Prince doesn't Twitter or how his writing has gotten lazy because he uses pop culture references in his music (when he's been doing that shit since the '80s...ha)...They conclude that he wouldn't be shit without Wendy & Lisa (who by the way I have immense respect for...but come on)...In their eyes Prince cannot do ANYTHING right...In another life he fucked over a family memeber or something...And hey, I get that because it's a free country...Free speech and all that...

But just as folks who make posts about how Prince is the greatest artist to ever walk the earth and an inventor of musical notes have become parodies, folks like Wall and Bart and the like (too many to name nowadays) are like Tom & Jerry Cartoons....You know someone is going to be wacked for no good reason....No matter the topic...

And who are the one's that get caught in the crossfire?...The normal everyday Prince fans who understand that every artists has their peak years, ups and downs, ect, ect...We've come to terms with that just as U2, Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, George Clinton, and Rakim fans have...

But some Prince fans seem incapable of moving on....

If you're referring to me I was hyped about Lotus based on the tracks that were previewed on the radio. Like the rest of this place I was on fire for Prince's music.

So come again.

What do you want me to say that hasn't already been said? lol At this point my general attitude to Prince is colored by the fact that he owes the fan community an apology for all his bullshit, especially that web sheriff crap. But unlike some of the haters, I can and will acknowledge the music when it's good.

You see here's the thing...I don't even think they are haters...That word is a little lazy...Too easy to use and can be used by some of the hardcore Prince fans to defend Prince's actions, no matter how fucked up they are....

The people I'm talking about are just nuts...

The problem is that most of the recent posts on this cite have had little to do with Prince's bullshit Web Sheriff actions and more to do with some of the dumbest shit I've read on a fan site this side of Michael Jackson....

It's become a place for Prince extremists and Trolls....A fucked up mix if you are just a normal Prince fan who likes his music, hates some of his actions, but is mature enough to understand that in the end, artists are just pricks like everyone else...

If I went by your "he owes us" notion I would never listen to another Miles Davis record again...lol

I don't think anyone would put you in the category of the extreme hater. Sometimes when we criticize prince, people assume we're that way (or when we praise for that matter) like we have to be republican or democrat. I am independent!
