ThreadBare

I heartily agree with ernestswell & errant.

I probably could get the "hater" label on this site because I strongly disagree with the way Prince has made a second career out of attacking his fans (especially on the Internet).

That said, I have to reiterate a point central to my activity in P:M&M. I've also been a longtime fan (closing in on three decades). And, I've loved good music even longer. So, my praise for a song or guitar style of his in the 1980s and criticism of, say, "Chocolate Box" aren't indicative of an inability to get with the times or of a reluctance to leave the 1980s.

Were that true, I'd favor Radiohead's "Pablo Honey" over "In Rainbows" instead of the reverse. As it is, I've increasingly dug their output, as they've progressed.

In Prince's case, more-recent gems have been far harder to find. My Lotusflow3r faves all fit on 1 cd (with room for a few tunes from previous projects). Such is life. shrug

Look I am going to be honest with you all who are younger and don't really know this info.

Prince has not made a universally praised album since PURPLE RAIN.

I hated ATWIAD & PARADE when first released.

I HATED SOTT and did not listen to it for two weeks after it was released.

I HATED LOVESEXY until about 10 years ago then I started listening with a different ear.I really did not know a lot of people who loved the album until the mid 1990s. Everyone loved the concerts but hated the album.

The GOLD Experence album was the most dissed Prince CD on this site until 2002/2003.I laugh when I see all of the praise for it now because people spitted venom at it.

I guess sitting here that the only album that everyone liked was The Black Album and I guess that was because it was bootlegged.

i think your response is natural if you've spent your life as an isolated fan and this is your first ever contact with online fandom of any kind.

otherwise, i think you're the little guy swinging his arms while the older boy holds you at a distance by pushing his arm against your forehead.

no offense, but criticism is criticism. you're not righting any wrongs by telling people their opinions are invalid even as their own opinions.

who are you trying to convince? and what are you trying to convince them of?

every thread goes meta within five posts.

rolleyes
and:

i for one find it tiresome that every thread devolves into an argument about who has a right to post their opinions.

you guys don't just say, i disagree with bart, you ALWAYS question whether or not they should even be here.

i say that sucks.

Screw Prince. I think I heart you, stan.

Seriously though, what bothers me is the blatant generalization that some "fams" posit at being factual "Haters want another Purple Rain...", "...they want the linn drum", "...they want him to curse again". Fuck that man. I just want a GOOD FUCKING album. Someone mentioned U2 earlier in the thread and that fans of their earlier stuff have long since jumped off....wrong. I love All That You Can't Leave Behind as much as I love their earlier stuff. Hell, I even loved Zooropa. Prince seemed to have lost it post-Emancipation for me. Perhaps it was the loss of his son? Who knows. All I know is, FOR ME, he still doesn't have it. And, like someone else in this thread said, I have to wonder where the HECK they're coming from when they compare Chocolate Box to ANYTHING other than Jughead. But, like stan said, I don't question why you should be here or threaten with a "slap" because your opinion differs from me.

Though, in the spirit of fairness, I will say that I agree with Accujack regarding simple negative posts like "It stinks" or similar simplistic responses to thought-out positive posts. Conversely, I hate the "Prince is God and we should not question anything he deigns to piss on us, so why are you here?" posts in response to those thought-out negative posts. But I still wouldn't go around counting how many positive or negative posts someone made to pass judgment on them.

Sorry this might seem rushed and off-the-cuff, but i'm getting ready to watch LOST...

but then if you have not enjoyed any output in over 15 years isn't time to move on? its like you're holding yourself hostage to some expectations, you're setting yourself up for constant dissappointment.

So here's the deal.

1) Not everyone here blindly worships Prince and everything he does. WE are his critics, not Nelson George. Not Alan Light. WE are. We accept his genius, but we also hold him to a high standard, one that he created for himself. A lot of folks here are musicians, song writers, and singers. And although they (we) may never reach the heights Prince has, (or even Andre Cymone LOL), we understand music. We know what sounds good, as well, just as Prince does. Sure Prince's albums are produced well, but even with great production, a shit song is a shit song.

2) We have a right to not like something. All that glitters, ain't gold.

3) Lotus is not a rock album. The Gold Experience is one, and even Chaos in parts. Lotus is heavy on guitar on the guitar heavy songs. But when you put breezy jazz instrumentals and fluff in between, it becomes NOT a guitar album in full.

4) MPLSound is not the golden age. There's no way a song like "Chocolate Box" or whatever against a gem like "Strange Relationship", "Dorothy Parker", "Sometimes It Snows In April" (You can hear the fucking stools squeak for fuck's sake..THAT is raw and real), or the long-suffered "When Doves Cry". SOmeone made the point that Prince pulling out the Linn and using a Camille voice doesn't mean he's suddenly rerecording 1987.

5) You're welcome to head elsewhere on the web, as well. Maybe something more ass-kissy, perhaps?

6) Why do you care what others think? Most here are not haters. People have brains and use them, even with all things Prince. He's not the golden boy anymore. He hasn't been for quite a while.

thumbs up!

- i like buying his independent releases because, in spite of the fact that he runs his businesses in a fashion that deserves to fail, i believe in supporting his move away from the major labels. as a major artist he sets an example that the big money makers (he's not a big money maker anymore but he does have the ear of popular artists in the industry) don't need to sign their lives over to the machine.

i didn't buy the last few mp3 bundles offered on his previous sites. i didn't buy 'musicology.' i did buy '3121,' 'planet earth' and the new set.

prior to 2000, i bought everything he released on release day.

i think the music started falling apart around late '95/early '96, but i hung in there because i hoped he would snap back. i usually snoop around the fan sites when a new album is released to see what's up. very little new information has been uncovered since the late 1990s. his operation remains opaque to mere fans. around '96 he fired a lot of folks and locked down everything such that we don't get the same interplay between insiders and fans that used to enrich the online prince community back in the day.

i came back here because the 'lotusflow3r' tracks leaked to that radio station were decent and housequake.com is dead and i wanted to see what was happening.

i did find something new today. for the first time ever i have seen fans of new prince dismissing old prince completely. saying they don't even like the 80s songs that much.

that is a new one on me.

biggrin

Your critque is legit.

I thought that his music found a new zest during Gold/Chaos/Emancipation eras.
I loved Rainbow Children (the religious stuff was over the top but it was good music in that album)
Musicology/3121/Planet Earth are good albums IMO ,to me they are better than AIWIAD.

of the '80s albums, 'dirty mind' and 'sott' are the two that didn't immediately grab me.

when i first listened to 'dirty mind' i honestly thought something was wrong with the tape and i had gotten john cougar mellancamp by accident. biggrin

'atwiad' broke my mind on first listen. still my sentimental favorite, if not my absolute favorite.

'parade' also broke my mind. maybe my actual favorite.

'sott' bored me at first. i thought it sounded too soft. nothing jumped out and grabbed my throat like on previous albums. granted, i was about thirteen. i actually had the vhs for a while but never watched it all the way through until a year or two after i got it. of course, later in my teenage years 'sott' became the soundtrack for high school.

i can say that my first listen to 'lovesexy' was a religious experience of sorts. biggrin this local five and dime store had a little box where you could order albums out of a catalog. i paid $14 for the cassette. the first time i listened to it i knew it was special.

I like all three of the new albums, and I`m thankful for them.I miss the B sides they were a lot of fun and the 12 inch singles that opened from the top not the side, that ran at 45 rpm instead of 33 rpm those were the days.

This ^^^^is what some folks don't seem to understand...

Although I hate the word "haters" (Sounds like a cop out to paint people who have the guts to criticize a celebrity/artist), it's becoming painfully obvious that certain individuals are becoming just as bad as the folks that think Prince walks on water...

The truth is there are not too many fan sites in which you hear folks talk about their favorite artist as if he/she raped their pet dog...lol...The Org tries to hard to prove itself...

I've said it once and I'll say it again...A lot of Prince fans are miserable sacks who pine for the old days....

Newsflash guys:

Fans of Madonna, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Metellica, and ect, ect, have moved on...They understand that their favorite act will never again capture their glory years...They criticize their favorite act within a reasonable frame of mind, and not throw out mindless chatter like, "How come Madonna doesn't use Twitter?"

They understand that they have the past albums to re-live the good ol days...They pay money to see these artists live in concert because they understand they are just that...fans. They understand that Madonna and likes don't owe them shit...lol...

Yet Prince fans, on both sides of the fence, from the folks that worship him on a deity level to the folks that think he's been a worthless hack that should have stopped after he fired Wendy & Lisa, have turned this site into a weird ass war zone...

There's no longer a place for the normal fan who digs Prince without all the drama...

But the irony?....At least the folks that worship Prince have an excuse to be at a "Prince fan" site...

What are the Wall's and Bart's of the Org excuse?

There used to be lots of Prince fan sites out there, that had something to offer each and every type of Prince fan. That was until somebody named Prince couldn't handle not having to best site on the net about him. Actually, his sites usually came in 7th or 8th. He's the one that forced everybody to converge on the almost last fan site standing for discussions of his music and so forth. His own actions are the reason people who otherwise adored him are turning on him at a startling rate.

I see your vision...and I agree...(Great point about Prince shutting down the sites...It did indeed cause a domino affect...)

But no one is holding a gun up to anyone's head telling them they must be a Prince fan....

But this is not about people adoring Prince....I sure as hell don't have him on a can-do-no-wrong pedestal...In fact, I've battled people on this site who thought I was being to critical of some of his music...But there's a thin line between a critical thinker and a glutton for punishment...

[Edited 4/15/09 19:33pm]

Please tell me exactly where in my post did I say (or even allude) to "not enjoying any output" in over 15 years.

I said he lost it after Emancipation, but that doesn't mean there aren't tracks that I haven't enjoyed. the Sun, the Moon and Stars, Tangerine, I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore, the Rainbow Children (the MUSIC, not the lyrics), One Nite Alone..., (piano/studio, NOT the live album) etc, etc are all tracks/albums i've enjoyed, but his output of late is something "'Ol Skool" Prince would've mocked incessantly.

I also think it's amusing that, IMO, "'Ol Skool" Prince wrote more creatively mature songs then the current Prince has.

Also, I have no expectations when it comes to Prince, so i'm constantly never disappointed:
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I think you make an interesting point. I also think that many who have responded don’t get it…

Sure, this is the internet, and there are lots of opinions and there are lots of a…holes. Some stink, some don’t. However, I do believe that there are some out there (on here) who continue to be negative for negative’s sake. It’s a shame really; that some people have no life of their own, so they have a need to feel important by spewing negative comments with little, or no validity, but plenty of contradiction.

In a way, I feel your frustration. Sometimes it’s like, what’s the use…

He hasn't been for quite a while.

thumbs up!

Full head of hair here and Prince is the one doing American Idol, not us! lol

That's because he's a iconic musician "a star" and he's not fazed by the future and change he always ahead of the wave, david bowie and bing crosby anyone ....

You 80's lot still looking for teenage kicks.... lol , Prince has done the 80's and moved on ....you lot need to move on too....suckers lol

according to prince, in songs such as 'musicology' and 'old school company,' we actually need to look backwards.
it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die
