It's not the sound of his '80's work that we crave. It's the QUALITY! That's what's missing from his current work. His current work is sub par, mediocre and frankly totally beneath him. Fans being everything but honest enough to say that, is what's stunting his growth!

maybe he is doing the best he can 2 please all of us.im sure he has something u like, the guy is more verstile than everyone.maybe just maybe .u expect 2 much.just take it 4 what it is.which is better than everyone else same old same old shit.man the guy is rocking jazzing funking.think about it.he just wrote everything on the 3cd collection.over 30 songs man.most artist it takes them 3yrs.2 put out that many songs.and at least 22 of them are great dance tunes, rock and some smooth female music.and he seperated 4 u so u wont say he is all over the place.u guys are 2 hard 2 please.go listen to mellancamp or babyface or something.u get the same old thing.at least with prince its always always something different can u give him that?

I'm guessing you're not English otherwise you'd have noticed the huge 80s fashion resurgence that's been happening for the last three to four years? A friend of mine recently bought a pair of ankle boots from TopShop-Retro. They're original. And particularly sad if you ask me.

And how many pop bands (US and Brit) are 80s inspired at the moment. We went to see the Kaiser's recently and one of the support bands (American I think) were so new wave. And shit I hasten to add (The Black Kids or something?) How about Neon Neon? Every sound of the 80s except their own.

The worst fashion decade for sure?

But they're horrible songs. lol I can't get beyond that. I hear The Time in "Never Be Another Like Me," all the way. But "Lolita" and "Chocolate Box?" Not so much.

And, Prince has chased trends throughout his entire career, to me. The degree to which he has done so has varied, I think. Has that trend-chasing been accompanied by flashes of greatness and originality? Absolutely.

I'm well familiar with Timbaland & Co. mining from P's production bag of tricks. Nothing new there. I just think it's funny that people expect music fans and musicians to not be able to tell when something's subpar, as those two songs certainly are.

I love this whole diversity.

We’ve got long time org participators.

We’ve the begrudging housequakers whose house finally got busted.

We’ve got the homeless NPGMC fams who have nowhere to idolise or bitch because their master took away their keys to the official playground.

We’ve got orgers with 5000 posts who list themselves as moderate fans.

We’ve got people with 10,000 posts who don’t own a copy all of Prince’s albums.

We’ve got members who spend almost their entire org life in Michael Jackson threads or the general discussion forum.

We’ve got people new or casual fans who think that Lotusflow3r is original or progressive.

We’ve got old skoolers who are blind to anything but the work of the 80’s.

We’ve got some permanent trollers and stirrers with nothing better in their lives.

We’ve got racists, sexists, deranged and geniuses.

And it’s great that we have this mix.

The org isn’t full of hate or love for Prince. It’s full of people with opinions on the Artist that brought them to the org in the first place. One mans SOTT is another mans New Power Soul.

So for me, the worst element of the org is the people who feel compelled to moan about other members expressing opinions. Every few days we get a fam pop up with a "why all the hate?" type rant. Its not hate, its just opinion that differs from their own, and they can’t stand that.

There is no doubt that this type of spiteful posting hugely increased shortly after the closure of the NPGMC forum. There is obviously an element that does not want a bad word said about Prince and feel like the need to protect without question.

In the process of spreading their spiteful comments about others expressing their opinion, they then have the cheek to label the people who speak freely as "haters".

There is also a growing element of fams who can’t comprehend that it’s ok to be on this site and not enjoy the current music.

The fact of the matter is, someone might only like 3 albums in the 80’s, but they have every right to participate in the forum and express their love for that music, and their displeasure of everything else.

This thread is a prime example of yet another "oppressing opinion" thread, doing nothing more than generalising, ranting and telling people, if you only like the older stuff, then you are not welcome.

Sad really.

I disagree. There IS a lot of hate here and a lot of hate towards Prince. Your opinion is that it's not hate but in my opinion it is. It's not really just not liking any of his current music, but just continous negative remarks. You are right though, in that it's a free forum and people are free to hate if they so choose.

In terms of the word hater, As long as you have people throwing out the fam/sheep/purple koolaid remarks there will be hater/naysayer/battered prince fan remarks and this back forth will continue i'm sure.

As for labels, I totally agree. Labels will always be used by the opposites, and accepted by the gangs.

I think that there is a tiny minority of people who hate on stuff to get a reaction. But mostly, I would say the negative comments stem directly from the reaction to Prince's cuurrent output or actions towards his fans.

Personally, I think the current state of forum is very telling of the latest albums and website. There used to be a very clear pattern. Negativity builds up, waiting for a new Prince release, then, once the album is released, everyone chills and enjoys the music for a few months.

But the last couple of years, we are seeing the music holding peoples attention less and less.

With the latest album, there seem to be more long term fans than ever seemingly drawing their own conclusions that the genius of Prince is something that only now pops up on an occasional track or two, rather than in the swathes they were used to in his prime.

Couple that with 13 years of broken promises, questionable business practices and paranoid lawsuits, and you end up with a fan base that is less forgiving than it was.

Who cares? Like what you like for yourself and don't worry about what opinions others have. If Prince is your personal hero, then so be it. But it isn't exactly reasonable to expect everyone to feel the way you do about him. Every person has their own unique experience for feeling the way they do about his work and they can't all be enclosed in one homogenous box. We are not mass produced, assembly line, fam-robots. We are all individuals with rights to our own opinions to critique his work as we see fit. Maybe just concentrate on following your own individual path for supporting him as an artist, and don't give 2 cents what others have to say. Be an individual, and just do you wink cool wink !

Having your own opinion does not sit well with Prince ex-fans (haterz) here. If you so much as say you love Prince they call derogatory names. Anyway I love Prince's music, I don't agree his music has declined at all. I don't compare him to anyone else and I don't expect anything off him. I treat him as the great musician he is. I just like whatever he puts out.

If people don't like my opinion, I don't give a funk wink

But it sounds as if anybody who may not like whatever work he does here or there is getting the same crappy treatment. My question was why should one spend time judging or validating on either side of the fence? Everybody should just like what they like or hate what they hate by the dude and just leave it at that cool

I agreed with everything you said till you got to the part I quoted.

Let me first state a 'fact of life'. Negativity begots negativity. Expecting positive responses to negativity will not get anyone too far in this life. This includes opinions. The only question is... what constitutes a negative opinion...?

Opinions, in of themselves, are a good thing. They provide diversity and reason to engage in conversation in the first place. Many people here, have the ability to express their opinions while respecting the opinions of others regardless of their opinions..

Stating you do not like something, giving reasons why and questioning others in regards to their opinions is not necessarily being negative or dishing out 'negative opinions' in itself. As it relates to this subject, even if you 'hate' all of the music since 95, your opinions can still in fact can be quite valid, constructive and positive. What makes them 'positive', in the midst of the hatred of the music, is: are they adding to the subject and offering a healthy balance in contrast to the opinions of others; is there a clear understanding that they are indeed opinions and not trying to be passed off as fact; and mostly, are they given with respect to others and their opinions as well. Expecting respect when not giving it seams to be a huge problem on these boards? This can go both ways... but the typical pattern is usually the same.

People who constructively offer up their opinions in the manner I stated... even if they 'hate' everything... are cool... and are the type of fans your statements are in support and/or defense of (I believe). I would defend their opinions just as I would my own if they respect mine as I would theirs...and we can agree to disagree. BUT they have the unfortunate problem of being grouped together with other types of fans you don't discuss because they share some of the same views... but they go about expressing them very differently.

Two main types:

Some of these fans don't just dislike the music or actions of Prince... they relentlessly attack. Thread after thread... post after post. Whether they are trying to force others to share their opinions or just have issues and a need to vent. They go on and on about what they 'hate'. To most sane people, this is not healthy behavior... it is very obsessive. These are the people many question why are they here.

The others state 'facts' about how this music is inferior to that music. The only support they have for these facts, is the fact that they have a superior understanding to music which is a fact not shared by others... and they are often quite adamant about this fact. It is a fact, if questioned or challenged... they dig in even deeper and spew even more of their self supporting facts. They simply do not understand the difference between fact and opinion and believe their opinions are indeed fact.

And more so, they tend to attack those who do like the music or support things Prince do. Calling people 'fams', 'fammy fam', 'kool-aid drinker', 'sheep' etc. (If they didn't please explain why these terms exist negative terms exist) They dish out these insults with out conscious or remorse. Music is a very personal thing. They seam to understand that part, because they usually state how much music is a part of their lives while dishing out their facts... but because they do not respect others to begin with... they trivialize this same. importance to other people.

These people are rude, they are insulting, they are condescending, they are self centered and they seldom ever show respect to anyone who disagree with them... yet they have nerve to demand respect They are fewest in number... yet they speak the most. Because they speak most... they overshadow those who they may share a dislike for the music or actions... but express their opinons in a healthy constructive way which warrants respect.

The funniest of these are those who often claim that they are done Prince and are only here to participate in other forums.... yet they always seam to be in Prince: Music and More stating that...?

Calling people 'fams', 'fammy fam', 'kool-aid drinker', 'sheep' etc. (If they didn't please explain why these terms exist negative terms exist) They dish out these insults with out conscious or remorse.

Kool-aid drinker and sheep, I'll give you are insulting which is why I do try not to use those terms when making my points but Fam(s) was a term of "endearment" coined by none other than Prince himself. So if you've got a problem being called a "fammy fam" for the record, that's not exactly the fault of "the haters". shrug
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

The OP seems to have abandoned the thread which, incidentally began with his own negativity laced rant, but anyhoo...

The only thing I can tell ya Kem is first, to remember that this is not Prince's own fansite...it's Ben's fansite. Therefore, it's ultimately his perogative to decide what content is acceptable, end of story.

Now if you find harsh criticism of Prince so disturbing that you feel compelled to comment on it, I would encourage you to get some perspective. Of the thousands of fans Prince has worldwide, a small percentage of them belong to fansites. Of those fansite members, only a small percentage are regular posters on the forums and of those, perhaps a dozen or so, are serial posters of extremely negative comments...ya see where I'm going with this? You could estimate that you're probably steaming from your ears about less than one percent of Prince's fanbase and I would tell Prince himself the same thing.

I'll say the same thing that I've said about a thousand times here already. Everybody knows the difference between someone engaging in discussions of differing opinions and a serial poster who's trolling for attention. The only effective method of dealing with the problem is to STOP RESPONDING TO THEM! For the life of me I can't understand why people don't get that. I know it's hard to do but besides reporting them over and over, it really is the only thing that works, trust me.

So chillax and have a coke and a smile already...coke biggrin
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Prince used the term 'fam' as a term of endearment towards his fans.

There is nothing endearing about the way 'haterz' use the term or any derivative of it.

I pretty much agree with you. You are 100% correct when you said there are, "... perhaps a dozen or so, are serial posters of extremely negative comments."

But they tend to post so much it becomes near impossible to ignore them. Its easy to not post in threads they start or just never quote them etc... but these guys don't rack up thousands of post by just being conent to say tgier peace and that be the end.

They can start a 'I hate MPLSound thread.'... but then will go post a dozen times saying the same 'I hate...' message in every single thread with the title of the album or any song from it. Everywhere you look.. there they go.

and oh yeah.. I forgot about the true trolls who start up multiple accounts for the sole purpose of trying to bait and flame in anonymity
