For me the issue is: Where did the 17,498 copies sold go? If each Target store reports to Soundscan, and the chain sold 185,956, as reported by Hits Daily Double, why is Soundscan only reporting 168,458 copies sold. I understand that the numbers between Soundscan and Hits Daily Double are not going to extactly match, but the number sold off by 17,498 copies is rare. Either Soundscan removed sales of the album, or Target inflated their sales. Did Soundscan received data that Target scanned a bunch of CD that were not really sold, such as scanning the barcode with no price. Or the Target number is correct and Prince is right and knew all along that Soundscan as part of the Music Industry purposely removed the copies and placed Lotusflow3r at number 2.
The other thing that seems strange to me is the number 1 placing of the CD on the R&B chart. I've been out of the music industry for a long time, but if I remember correctly the R&B data is gathered from a core panel of stores that serves and specializes in the Urban Market. So my question is how many Target stores are located in these markets and did the CD sell enough for the number one R&B placing. [Edited 4/8/09 17:52pm]

Well The Tavis Smiley show is his next stop. So Prince is continuing his promotion. I am dying 2 C what he has 2 say about this number 2 drama. This is his first TV interview in a while. I think this number 2 placing is controversial. Yesterday it was all over the net that he was number 1. Now mysteriously he is not. Something is wrong with that picture. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Is it possible that the 17,498 difference was due to sales outside the U.S., and that should not count towards charts in in the U.S.?

My 2 Cents -- I think what Prince has done is amazing. With no lable or radio support, no manager (i think he really needs one) and only one major retailer. No 2 is an awsome feat for him. I think what some dont get, or maybe they do, is how HARD it is the break a no.1 these days (single or cd). Also keeping in mind the age thing, not many 51 year old's cracking the top ten, back to back.
I think Prince is manhandeling the music business, as intended. Of course a no 1 would be always b a welcome treat, but I believe everytime his CD's crack the top ten, he is teaching many of us, including record co. and radio, how to survie, in a mostly one-sided business. If u were on the other side (record co & radio), I wonder how agressivly u would defend ur turf.....

Firstly, the album is AMAZING. Debuting at #2 doesn't make the album any less impressive than it is. Secondly, Prince limited himself by only releasing the album at Target. To be honest, if he hadn't done that who knows what the debut might have been? And the fact that he came in at #2 and it was only sold at one retailer, makes #2 actually MORE impressive in my book. (this is a WEIRD day on the Org when i'm the positive one) (maybe i should go back to bed) Good point!

Why do we care if Prince is #1? Unless you have a financial stake in its success, who cares? Would you like the album any more or less if it was at #132? A Prince fan is going to buy it, and if its good, a non-prince fan might hear it and like it.
I understand it's good that our boy is at the top of his game after all these years, but if he's taught us anything, it's that the mainstream's rules don't apply, and that any creative output is a success simply by its creation. Also, someone else's opinion of your work isn't fact. I laugh when I see people on here call an album bad, etc. I imagine Prince sitting at home on his computer kicking a trashcan yelling, "Darn it, PurpleBoy3121 doesn't like my album. Shucks!"

Wow so happy 4 him being and Independent Artist and still able to pull Rank like this. I just begin to imagine he is already at #1 because if he had the major label behind him he definitely would be there.
But again as Billy said: "Your music only makes sense to yourself." So he heck with positions he is already #1 before the stats even come out. Smoke on that SoundScan and any other Scan there is Audios of current articles --- www.jw.org

Think of it as Us Weekly for the music business. When they do their charts, they're GUESSING. it's really not based on any facts. Soundscan is the only system set up in the US to count album sales. so that first number was NEVER true or verified. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

I remember some of those songs... ..for the wrong reasons. • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.
