This song has grown on me alot
Love the first note with a PR feel/sound and kind of reminds me of Cinammon Girl. Who was Judah??? [Edited 7/17/07 8:51am]

Well, there are several characters in the Bible called Judah (with varying pronunciations, but the Lion Of Judah was traditionally a symbol for the Tribe of Judah. http://en.wikipedia.org/w...n_of_Judah

OK after some days of listening to this and loving it I think the mood (not the sound necessarily) evokes a similar feel to 17 days - I tried them back to back earlier and I really sensed it - sorry if I offend!

Like in this song. The Lion of Judah is Jesus Christ...and a lot of people don't realize that. Probably shouldn't have used the word ignorant (no matter how appropriate) because most times people assume a negative conectation. I find the posts regarding the song and the overwhelming positive vibe interesting. Its two things for me...one most don't even know that the Lion of Judah is another way to refer to Jesus Christ....and secondly even those who do don't care one bit because the music sounds good...just like in the 80s (IWD4U, Anastasia, IKnow etc...) In any case I think people get a little too sensitive about the word ignorant...it means lack knowledge...not dumb [Edited 7/15/07 18:52pm] I think what people object to is the fact that you're doing a lot of assuming here. For example, there's no verifiable way that you can conclude that many or most people on this board are unaware of the connotations of "Lion Of Judah". It sounds condesending. Maybe, just MAYBE the religious overtones don't bother other people so much??? You've just hit a home run! I don't care what is inspiring me, I want to hear about what is inspiring him. In doing so, I can sometimes be inspired indirectly. And fortunately our two worlds are often different so I can gauge how other people see the world. And we can all unfortunately relate with the struggle of depression, which is the main theme of the song. We just choose different ways to pull ourselves out of the funk. No biggie. I need an editor, edit. [Edited 7/17/07 12:51pm]

The album is recorded and mixed very well. Listening 2 a CD is an absolute MUST. MP3s don't and can't relay the dynamics and clarity of this recording as a whole. Not only that, but I've been watching from afar for long enough that'd I'd swear to a court that this guy knows how to talk to people that know how to listen; if you get my slow understanding.

Blasphemy! 17 Days is my favorite Prince song of all time and should not be uttered in the same sentence as this Lion song. (I'm not really mad, but I definitely DO NOT see that connection at all. )

i can understand where the 17 days linnk comes from, but its not really accurate... lion of judah is more purple rain/anna stesia/joy in repetition style.
It is nothing like cinnamon girl which is far more uptempo, popish. This is dark, rocky, and passionate.

I really hope the HQ version will please me more..
I was glad The One I wanna C isn't a light rock Prince song, but I guess Judah will ber skipped just like I skip Cinnamon girl,Marrying kind..... And I don't care if someone is religious or not or not...as long as the song is great. Besides...there is nothing up there except the clouds and the stars [Edited 7/17/07 15:13pm] Love4oneanother

OK just to clarify, I know the sound/style may be different but the intonation and sentiment certainly has a link - 17 days is one of my all timers hey I even remember the day I first flipped to the B side in August '84 so I dont take this lightly

I'm kinda glad to see this song dividing the fanbase. It's testimony to the song's power.
Like "Somewhere Here on Earth", this song reflects a side of Prince we rarely see- one that is not self-congratulatory or boastful, but rather one that is vulnerable and in need of reassurance. The lyrics are wonderful. It's as if he is trying to invoke something as monumental as the Lion of Judah because he feels so small himself. [Edited 7/17/07 15:39pm] Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

While some of his lyrics really don't appeal to me anymore, there's some good stuff on this album.

TheAStarr said: I don't think it is about god. The religious image is used because he looks to religion for answers, but the song is about his own struggles (though the source of his struggles in this song could be interpreted as a person, himself, writing music, his fans, critics, you name it). I think he hopes that he can be like the lion of judah and have the power to overcome, he is not saying that "christ is the answer to all my problems, lets all believe in him.. yay!". we know that he can get preachy these days so it is easy to think that every time he references god it is some princely christian rock and roll song.
But until he found what he believed in and started talking about it, we didn't used to judge his songs so superficially like we do now. How many times did he reference god over the years? When he made those references (especially something like Let's Pretend We're Married), it encouraged us to look deeper into a song for meaning. Now the second he says anything related to a religion in a song, I'm seeing more and more people immediately skipping the track and saying "I don't want to be preached to". If you take a good listen you will see that he isn't preaching more often than not. [Edited 7/16/07 18:53pm] It's kind of amusing that Prince can use a simple metaphor and get such a negative reaction. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Also, to look at the song itself (this is essentially a repost from my review of the whole album in the main thread):
This song is extremely well crafted but hard to listen to. Prince faces his demons. The purple rain guitar makes sense, the lack of focus on a lot of the main vocal makes sense... I think the song is extra-deliberately crafted to sound and feel the way it does. This song makes the listener feel frustration and sadness. Again, just like a lot of mid 80's Revolution work, the song conveys the emotion with the musical constructs every bit as much as the lyrics. It is adventurous and weird, purposefully less listenable than it could be, and it should be appreciated as an achievement in songwriting. P.S. Moonbeam is absolutely right about the reasons Prince is invoking something as monumental as the lion of judah. You hit the nail on the head. Starrfighter

I like the music, not a great track, but pretty decent. The lyrics are pretty cool, not quite as good as the underrated, Cinnamon Girl, but it's sounds like something that could have been on the "Around The World in a Day" LP. Does anyone else agree?

He even breaks out the octaver on the lead guitar. Well arranged, well recorded, like nearly everything on this album, which was recorded, mixed, and mastered perfectly. So much detail. Accujack that was such a wonderful compliment u gave Giovanni. I feel the same as u about Giovanni and a few others on this site.
