Admiting when I first heard the name of this song, I thought it would be very different than what it is actually is, but after hearing the lyrics, it made me happy, because the song gives praise to the man above, and that is what life should be about.

all in all though, I take it you don't generally like suprises poke

The Lion of Judah....yet another religeous song form Prince wrapped up in a pretty pop package most of the folks on this forum that hate when Prince says anything religion oriented don't even know it becuase they are so ignorant

I´m ignorant too.
Prince is not too intellectual and I hate all his indoctrinations. Even more if you consider his sometimes weird, sometimes absurd beavior in public.

Can't tell you anything smart on it, but IIRC it's not a strictly JW thing but more a general bible thing. I think Jesus for example is refered to as a 'Lion of Judah'? Anyway, he uses this as an example how his faith lifts him up and makes him strong in the song.

i've listened to the album several times now, and i swear to you, i couldn't hum this song if you asked me to. that's unusual with me and prince albums. usually i have at LEAST the melodies committed to memory within the first couple of listens. i think it's a well-intentioned but unusually bland song...or maybe it just needs more time to grow on me. shrug

I know what you mean, but listen a good song doesn't have to be a regular ear-worm. I love the song and walk about singin' that 1 line: Lion o' Judiah!

I haven't read this whole thread, but listening to Lion Of Judah over the weekend, I laughed out loud when I heard the old-school Prince line "The best that I ever had" - a classic line that he's used several times in different forms, although probably not since the late-80s.

I also think the background vox saying "a star - that's what we are" is a conscious W&L/Revolution reference.

i'm falling into the john lennon camp with this one, though you're probably right and it's just wishful thinking on my part.

Hmmm, Instant Karma? That hadn't occurred to me, although that song has been in my head over the last week or two (much more than Lion Of Judah has) - perhaps that's why...

But yeah, I think it's unlikely to be an Instant Karma reference. Given the presence of W&L on this album, I think it's a gentle PR-era reference.

anx...you are right....the song is bland....or at least sounds bland....in fact the entire album should be renamed Planet Bland

this is the first time, by the way, that i have ever pretty much disliked an entire prince album

maybe after all those vegas shows i went to, it is even more of a let down because of how amazing he is in concert

Prince on record & Prince live are 2 totally different things.....but to call the album just bland goes a bit too far.....it's got more layers than 3121, imho!

"Lion of Judah" is the most challenging song on the album, for sure. It may be the only really edgy thing on there! But I'll be damned if it doesn't eventually get caught in your head forever!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

... folks have been screaming for the old sound for years. so he gives us some and people are still complaining. ... Don't blame P if giving you what you want can't make you happy — that's all on you.

It's a great album, enjoy it or listen to some other artist's music. You don't have to like every song. There are songs on 1999 and PR that I just can't listen to. But some of us LOVE P for the quirky sh*t because it shows that he's not being a slave to the market putting out safe generica.
