The first thing that popped into my head after I read this was that scene from "Boomerang" where Eddie Murphy is watching that overly-sexual commercial made by that freaky dude. The girls were pertending to give oral sex to all the different fruits and that one girl sucking on the lipstick.... Really, who does that? Sorry, totally jumped off subject there. You know that if Prince goes to the Grammys, someone is going to ask him about this. **Grammy scenario** Reporter: "So, Prince, what do you think about all the "controversy" surrounding your performance at the Super Bowl?" Prince: "I don't know. I watched the playback of it just recently and I wish that I had used better protection." Reporter: " You mean that was all intentional!!!" Prince: "No, God made the rain; and I just had to deal with it; and go through the motions like I always do, except now I had to do it with millions of people watching." Reporter: 'So, you don't have a problem with all the "controversy" being linked to this?" Prince: "Sometimes you have to get a little wet when your giving a live performance outside. It was exciting...very exciting." Reporter: "I'm amazed at how calm and cool you are about all of this." Prince: "Yeah, I really thought that my shoes where going to be totally ruined. Do you have any idea how wet that stage was? At one point, I walked through this puddle and thought that I was walking across a river. I really wish I had put some covers around my shoes.... At one point, I even thought about wearing some rain gear...it's still flu season, ya know; but, it would have been too hard to play guitar while wearing a slicker." Reporter: "Ummmm... " Prince: " What did you think I was talking about?" Reporter: ":pause: So, you're nominated for 5 awards tonight. How do you feel about that?" I'm sure Prince is laughing about all this "controversial" nonsense as much as I am right now. Prince Rogers Nelson

Where in the hell have these people seen a penis that has a long ass hook going straight though the middle of it? At no time when Prince was behind that screen could you not see that hook looking thing on his guitar. A "Prince" Albert...?

the funny thing is us as fans are used to seeing him play like that, so we never even gave it a second thought, i never even noticed it till the articles starting flowing in...then this morning my boss was talking to me and commented (knowing I am a big fan), did you see that pose with his guitar? Of course, he isn't a fan, and like many people, hasn't listed to Prince in over a decade....so those are the only ones who happened to notice this, but we know that is just how P expresses his funk in guitar, just as he does with the unique facial gestures

People, People, Of course it was intentionally phallic, but you won't hear that from Prince. He leaves stuff up to personal interpretation.
Just as Gett Off could be about a person being ambitious, and achieving their dreams ...Uh, no! Prince likes for be kinda indirect with his sexiness sometimes and let the public figure it out for themselves If you will, so will I

jone70 said: Totally agree. I have to say that I think Prince knew what he was doing--but at the same time he knew it was so perfectly subtle that he (and we) can say, "whatever, it's a guitar. what else would it look like?" and that is plausible. (I don't know if he thought it would become such a hot topic though.) Just like he doesn't sing, "I sincerely wanna f#@k the taste out of your mouth" anymore, but instead he sings, "Imagine me on the tip of your tounge." Cleverly nasty.
[...more text was here...] Either I'm slow or that was clever/subtle -- I just noticed that.

That imagery part of Prince at Superbowl 2007, was my favorite part of his performance. I always wonder what he would look like behind something like that ( name please) now I know. Thank you Prince.

You know what's funny is that he does that a lot when he plays. I've always noticed it, I guess some people haven't noticed it until now. Remember the part in Purple Rain when Wendy neils down in front of him while he plays the guitar, it looks as though she's giving him a "professional" if you catch my drift, he knows what he's doing. That's the new thing for superbowls let's see who can wow! the crowd and have them talking for years to come, love ya P. 2FINDLUV

Say what?
I was and still am in awe about how Prince played his guitar in all that rain. I hope all is well with him. When I saw the rain pouring non-stop, I wanted to personally dry him with a nice cottony towel. I really like the Symbol guitar. A penis is a man's source of creativity among other things, but not something to repulsed by.

Oh come on ladies. A guitar IS A PENIS. it IS phallic. Stop acting like you didn't notice he was boxing the dolphin behind that sheet! He was punching the munchkin. He was confessing to the pope. He was giving mud to the turtle.
Seriously- a guitar IS a phallic extension. It happens. It wasn't accidental - it was intentional. And... who cares? People have been grabbing their extension of their manhood and grinding for centuries. It happens. Let it go. www.beaurocks.com Trees are made of WOOD!

People have been grabbing their extension of their manhood and grinding for centuries. It happens. Let it go. But of course it's phallic. Not that I didn't notice, I certainly did. But my tendency towards protectiveness when it comes to Prince motivated me to feel concerned for his health. Playing his guitar and singing in that unforgiving rain does make me wonder if he is and will be ok. Nothing wrong with getting mushy for the sexiest man alive.

Man, people seem to find fault in everything these days.
If anything, I thought that whole display behind the sheet was just to prove that the guy is larger than life and is one of the best, if not the best musician the world has to offer. Sure, I agree after reading some of his lyrics that it would make sense, but I just didn't interpret that display that way. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Of course it's fucking phallic!!! It's based partly on the masculine symbol, which (very vaguely) is meant to resemble a phallus. On the other hand, who the fuck cares! The fact that it's SUGGESTIVE is the very contrary to saying that it's EXPLICIT or crude. Maybe they should start editing the Empire State Building out of aerial shots of New York shown on TV. And what about women caressing a microphone as they sing into it - what does that make you think of? They should also edit fast-moving trains etc. at crucial moments in old movies shown on the tube... of course it APPEARS phallic, but the popular argument here seems to be that most folks don't believe prince was on the horn to the NFL halftime producers saying "get me a big ol' sheet to fly on stage so i can stand behind it and do a shadow puppet sausage show. that would be cool. huh-huh. huh. huh. OWWAH!" it just was what it was. hell, every time someone eats a banana, it looks like a blowjob. doesn't mean that's what they're going for. Wait a minute - you're doing it too! Listen every1: 1. The symbol and symbol guitar are INTENDED to have phallic connotations. 2. That idiosyncratic P guitar-playing pose clearly and INTENTIONALLY (undoubtedly) has phallic connotations. OTOH, whether or not the purpose of the sheet was to accentuate that is anyone's guess (highly doubt it), but my main point was, SO F-ing What? The banana comparison is off the mark - that's unintentionally phallic. My comment was that nearly every car commercial, and certainly nearly every popular music performance contains INTENTIONALLY phallic imagery. That's what makes P's stripping of the metaphor somewhat intentionally ironic i.e. he took a classic phallic symbol and made it look MORE like a phallic symbol!!! I just saw the whole halftime show again and I gotta say, does it really matter either way if it was intentional or just people making a big deal out of nothing? I sure don't care either way.
That guitar solo was beyond impressive, just the way that it sounds and the way he plays it, just incredible. I doubt anyone else will ever be able to pull off a HalfTime show the way the way he did. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I'm gonna keep repeating how I've only seen the second half of "Purple Rain", but that was all it took for me become a fan. I'm a pretty casual fan and I only really get excited about him after a televised performance and the thrill lasts from a few minutes to an hour or two. Since the Super Bowl, I haven't stopped thinking about him. Whether I think about him a little or a lot, I still feel the same. He's incredibly talented and knows how to perform. And you're absolutely right, if he wanted to create a controversy he would have done something different... that is pretty fun, cuz that is the title of one of his early albums. I'll say this, though, when it comes to stage presence, he's got one unlike anybody else I've ever seen. Once he comes onstage, he casts his spell and I don't want to/can't look away. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone
