JJ & TL have a lot of talent and they've written a lot of hits, but have they done anything that's actually great?

You guys are talking music - yes absolutely J & L are great but they have never induced the thought provoking fantasies that Prince has in the masses.

This statement perfectly illustrates the fact that you don't know what you are talking about. Prince fans know that Purple Rain ain't even his best album. Hatorade anyone? And you call yourself a hardcore fan. No hardcore Prince fan would proclaim that Rhythm Nation trumps Prince's best. Hell, Jimmy and Terry probably wouldn't even claim that.

How could one be in competition with the other? They used to do friendly competition against each other before Prince hit it big, however when the Time formed and was touring with Prince, Prince was doing some really edgy pushing the envelope Dirty Mind stuff, while The Time kept their Minneapolis funk sound going. Anybody could tell you that it was pretty much two different kind of acts.

btw...the "promotion" you speak of may have happened in your neck of the woods, but it most certainly didn't happen here. There were NO billboards, there were NO commercials. There was NO signage whatsoever to indicate he had an album coming out.

Dude pull your head out of your ass. Let's see JJ and TL write all the lyrics, all the music, bust out their instruments, and choreograph a whole concert for every album they produce. Oh wait, they just work for other people. You are comparing apples and oranges here.

Hits mean nothing as to how prolific or genius an artist is. I have read that he made Little Red Corvette to specifically become a hit to draw attention to his music. And I think TMBGITW was written to show Warner that he didn't need their label to have a hit song back in the contract argument days (don't quote me on this info though). Regardless, going by your "sales=greatness" philosophy, your precious Rhythm Nation (which I also like) was outsold by Purple Rain.

Oh yeah, and Prince's legacy will not be "produced for the biggest pop star in the world's sister". Prince rides on no one's coat tails. He doesn't need Janet to have a legacy.
