It's according to what your personal definition of the word "great" is. Does your definition mean talentwise or does it mean the ability to get a hit. We all know it takes no talent to get a hit these days. Just look at all the no talent shit hop that has made it onto the charts these days by stealing the talented older artists' music and making it the background for their songs.

I define greatness as talent and Jam and Lewis have talent (too bad they don't use it any more) and they themselves have said that when they were taking lessons to learn to play different instruments, Prince could just pick the instrument up and play it with no lessons whatsoever.

bullshit....yALL KILL ME WITH THIS PRINCE PICKS UP AN INSTRUMENT AND PLAYS IT SHIT.....THE DUDE PRACTICED HIS ASS OFF AS A TEEN BECAUSE HE WAS 4"9' TALL AND HE COULDNT PLAY SPORTS....SO WHAT DO MOST DWEEBS WHO CANT PLAY SPORTS DO.....PLAY MUSIC!

Like that statement makes it any better. You have not written anything intelligent, you write childlike gibberish. You have not schooled us on the art of musicianship and how that relates to Prince's music then and now. You cannot engage in a conversation in an adult manner. Besides this is the ORG. There are many threads speaking for and against Prince's music. So what is your point. Unless we're all in unison in a hatefest against Prince, you're not going to be happy?

You're just another battered fan. Poor baby. It must hurt being stuck in a time warp, unable to move on. lol

no no no! and I thought they were crashin on me on NPGMC. wat u r sayin is ignorance, anyone that thinks that they r like jesus in anyway is a lie. I am a baptist 2 but that does not give me the right 2 think i am like jesus. ur posts r everythin but intelligence, and how dare u come down on others that may b inferior 2 u. Jesus did not come down on others that couldn't heal or save people so y should u do it. i learned this from church if u come down on someone that may not have the gifts that u have u will lose them eventually and some will come down on u the same way. It called karma. mad

P.S. if u don't think prince is better than every other musician alive 2day then u don't need 2 b on this site start ur own jerry and lewis or whoever u were talkin about website and see how many people join. razz

Prince is considered the greatest of all time to those who perceive him as such. Art is a state of heart and soul, and to one what might seem to be a "has been" or is no longer on top, to another might seem to be on top of his game and better than ever before. To state inclusively that Prince is no longer the greatest, or has lost his musicianship, is a judgement call, and not a statement of fact. Prince creates art, and as such, art is judged only by the one viewing/listening to the art and no two will ever judge it exactly the same, because art will never touch two people in exactly the same way.

To me, Prince is the greatest of all time because as I look back over his career, I can find music through all eras and styles that Prince has created that speaks to me, touches me heart and soul, and somehow seems to define so eloquently what I was feeling in that moment. To me, no one can play the guitar as beautifully as Prince. To me, no one can seem to touch every emotion with just a single note of that guitar, held so long that I feel myself drifting with that note, never wanting it to end, but yet not quite able to deny my excitement for that next note.

Through the years, Prince has been able to touch many people. There are those that long for the Prince of 20 years ago, wanting to see that "edge" that first defined Prince and raised eyebrows and caused government to put labels on albums as being "not recommended for children" and for others, this new Prince, touches them in the way that the old Prince touched the others. Prince's values have evolved throughout his career, and his music has reflected those changing values. For some of us, our values have changed, evolved, grown and become more adult along with Prince, and so his music reflects our values as well. For others, they long to not see the music reflect these new values, but would rather see the get down and get funky and dirty and nasty Prince and leave his new values out of the music. Neither is right, neither is wrong, because it's art, and art reflects not only the artist but the one perceiving the art. And what makes Prince the greatest in my humble opinion, is that Prince can always find someone who can look at what he has created and feel it with their heart and soul. While some may listen and hear only scribbles, others may listen and hear a masterpiece.

There is no way to definitely state what era Prince was the greatest in and have it be true for all people across the board, because we each perceive and feel things in our own way, and therefore what may touch us deeply, might not even scratch the surface of someone else.

Absolutely Beautiful.bow Very well written and if oh boy can't comprend that he needs 2 shut the fuk up. I will give him credit 4 keeping his thread alive

I also wanted to add that art is not defined by awards, or number sold, but rather by how it moves a person, or touches them. So to even try to state that someone has lost their artistic ability because they no longer sell a large amount, or sell out concert venues, or whatever, is also something that cannot define the artistic value of what one creates. Since art is a personal experience, and the value of that art to the one perceiving it is a personal value, one cannot define the greatness of that art through monetary gains/losses. I've seen some art pieces that look awful to me, but have sold for millions of dollars. I've also seen art pieces that really touch me, speak to me, make a statement to me, and the artist is either giving it away or selling it for a very low price. To me, the art piece that touches me and moves me and doesn't cost a lot, has more value than the one that looks awful to me and doesn't touch me in anyway but has sold for millions. So again, the value is given by the one listening, seeing, touching, experiencing, and not by industry numbers.

LittleRedCorvette your words are so Beautifully spoken wink

I am not as big a fan of Prince as some folk here are, I am a fan of his music but not his history etc.

However, my thoughts on this is:

1. The reason he hasn't had as many hits as others, simply, because he doesn't suck up to the mainstream industry, he writes HIS music HIS way. He has never struck me as to want to write top 10 hit tunes that last 3:09 and are forgotten about in a week.

2. His fans (as you can clearly see from the responses) are extremely Loyal and have (almost) always been behind Prince in every aspect of his career.

3. He is exceptionally innovative - His career in music has been more diverse than many, many other artists who have had 30 years + experience. Example - I love Clapton, yet, Clapton has stuck with a very similar style and sound for his entire career.

4. Prince has penned tracks and albums for many other succesful artists - Ignoring his proteges, people such as Madonna / Martika / Stevie Nicks and even Kenny Rogers !!

Finally, the reason Prince is the greatest of all time to his Fans - Is because his music gives them a meaning - Whatever that may be is as individual to the Fan as the Fan is individual.

I have been a Prince fan for 22 Years now and I will always continue to be a Prince fan - So much so, I already have bought a Zimmer Frame with a CD autochanger on it wink

How can it be a massive hit when it just came out?

And if it just came out, it has to be an old recording, because Luther is dead.

O.k., but that doesn't answer my question - when it just came out, it can't be a massive hit. When was the last massive commercial hit written and produced by Jam and Lewis?

Please don't say Usher again - I've looked it up, Jam and Lewis (together) didn't write a single song on "Confessions". It was Jimmy Jam who wrote some of the tunes, but as far as I'm aware, none of the tracks became a hit (please correct me if I'm wrong).

If you want to compare Jam and Lewis to Prince, you can only do this for tracks with similar input - written and produced (by both) should be the least.

Listen, you poor, poor waste of sperm. See, this is why children should not attempt to get involved in grown folk conversation. Nobody... not me, not you, not Quincy... NOBODY is in a position to judge Prince. That doesn't mean Quincy is not one of the worlds greatest musicians. That also doesn't necessarily mean that Prince isn't. That doesn't mean you aren't entitled to your opinion that Prince's shit doesn't hit like it used too... shit if you look closely, most of us feel the same way. I'm saying that anyone who has been a Prince fan long enough knows that it's more engaging to watch wet paint dry than trying to determine where he went wrong in his career and why his shit doesn't hit like it used to. The bottom line is that as fans of the man's music, we're always going to be waiting and watching to see what the next move is. So there's no point in fronting like you could take Prince or leave him. Just enjoy the music for what it is, or don't. The rate that you contribute to this forum alone proves that he practically owns you.

And furthermore don't ever send me some bitch ass orgnote like that again. If you get your feelings hurt on the internet, then you need to go outside and play.

Agreed. The American mainstream buying public are lazy idiots. Miles, T. Monk, Nina Simone, and Meshell Ndegeocello haven't sold boat loads of cd's. And you're a little late on the Jam/Lewis hit train. Besides, they were trained in the skill of songwriting during all their karoke drills doing Prince-penned (and performed) "Time" songs in concert.

On the "pop" charts, hmmmmm. Don't think so and definately not on billboard current top 50 hits. As much as I love that song, its not a big hit, but see, I don't care about "hits" but it matters to you so I thought I should point out that it's not.

And funny how you call me an idiot when your talking about immigration and Bill Gates when it has nothing to do with the post. lol
