Where the fuck was their talent???? He had NO respect for music if he could get himself laid. He's supposed to be all about schooling kids to 'real' music...the show is sooooo played out but the idea that Prince is above it is just bullshit.

i always felt that his girl group protege albums were a way to distribute the tons of music he was writing and recording and get it into stores without flooding the market...plus he'd always have the pretty girl opening act, which i know was always a big deal to him. i don't think these albums were "sell outs" at all. maybe not the pinnacle of modern music, but they weren't meant to be.

I don't know Prince, so I can't speak for him. But I (note I) think that he wants people to come into music the real way, starting from 0 and working your way up from the local scene, like real bands do.

Then again I don't think he would want anyone doing a cover of his songs f**king them up. Also, outside of the org community and those of hardcore fans here and there, most people only know Kiss and Purple Rain. Look at the guy who sang Queen's 'Innuendo' which WAS a number 1 in 1991, but most people have never heard that song. So if someone went up there singing Holy River or something no one would have any idea what the hell they were singing.

Personally I would sing Sexy MF.

He could have chosen people with a lot of talent to distribute his music, to me that actually makes Prince worse. At least Idol contestants have to actually be able to sing live in front of an audience and be judged on their ability, Prince just choose any old heffer with big tits. And seriously how about the content, Nasty Girl, Sex Shooter, Go Go Dancer...basically 'I'm a whore'. Dude's a fuckin hypocrit.

i don't agree. there was never any question that these acts were just trained seals singing songs that prince and his bandmates wrote, then putting together choreographed shows and making T&A videos. unlike american idol, there was no pretense of these acts being great talent. it was all about the spectacle and the bewbs and the naughty funky songs.

Carmen and Mayte were part of the same pattern, they were the '90s. I wouldn't pull it out if he didn't portray himself as defender of 'real music'. Give me a break and look at your past.

I second that !!!

Why on earth should he be condemned for not wanting to appear on the Show? These "Pop Idol" shows are an insult to real musicians who struggled their way to success only to be blindsided by someone with the talent of Kermit the Frog without his puppeteer !!

The only entertainment value these programs have are the applicants during auditions.....Otherwise it is like watching a Junior High Talent Contest !!

That may seem harsh, but these shows are being force fed to the public so much now it is boring. Furthermore, the only real winners from these shows are the Record Companies, after all they aren't doing it for free are they.

You obviously don't watch the show. A lot of the contestants on there are musicians that play instruments and are already in bands but AI is a singing compition and they don't allow the instruments on the show.

I don't watch the show, you are right, I don't think the show is aired in the UK?? However I was referencing to the whole genre of "I wanna be a popstar in three weeks" trash. Obviously if you love the show, then that is fine, personally I really do think that this is a seriously sad idea along with all those other crappy shows we are force fed - It is not about the singers talent it is a popularity contest - If it was about Talent, where are the Previous years winners??? Serving at McDonalds? They win a 1 album deal, this makes money for the record company, who then drop them and they vanish into obscurity (or McDonalds) or daytime telly !!

Perhaps I am just an old fart who doesnt enjoy being force fed silliness.....I don't like Big Brother and all the other related TV shows too !!! lol

Whatever your excuse is, it's STILL an excuse. Put your tunes on itunes, go on American idol, give away a stupid purple ticket, before people forget about you and don't give a shit. I'm sure there were plenty of folks that had no idea and still don't know that these were Prince projects...

Nobody is pretending to write their own songs on American Idol... They sing live... Come on, I mean these guys are singing or at least trying to sing Freddie Mercury tunes... their performances are going to be compared to one of the greatest vocalists ever... their talent, or lack thereof is out there for everyone to see... How is that a pretense?

I think Prince was living out his childhood fantasies with these women.

These women epitomised most teenage boys sexual fantasies.

If you look in fantasy magazines ALL the women look like this.

These women are like every blokes wet dream !!

ALL Prince was doing was creating them himself .

Don't forget Prince is only 5 foot 2 and does not epitomise masculinity - aka Lenny Kravitz !

He's all really shy and I often imagine that as a youngster he would only dream of going out with women like this !

These women ARE Prince living out HIS fantasy.

Good on him! That's what I say !!!!

I wish everyone would stop generalizing. Prince was never quoted as saying he didn't want to talk to the kids, or that he hated American Idol.

Nigel Lythgoe was quoted as saying that Prince did not have the time to do the full week with the contestants and may have done a performance only... but in the end, declined.

All the rest was Page Six gossip (Universal pressure, Prince hating AI, etc).

You just can't call the man a hypocrite for something he never said in public.

I'll admit, Idol is one of my guilty pleasures

that being said, I'm happy as FUCK that Prince didn't go on that show. The types of deals those folks sign are EXACTLY what Prince has ripped on for a decade now. For him to have stooped to that level to promote 3121 would've been sad.

Course I would've watched it and LOVED it! I'm sure it would've been a trainwreck of massive proportion.

Saturday Night Live has a long tradition of catering to real, legitimate artists doing performances. They're just up there performing, not mingling with the younger crowd and chest-bumping a bunch of wannabes. The reason that Ashlee Simpson's fiasco was such a...well fiasco was because of the long tradition of live performance. It's a totally different atmosphere.

What da hell is the difference btw this and Idol...
In fact, Star Search was really bad, atleast one or two of those folks on Idol can sing no matter how chessy. star search had juggling dogs on it.

The difference is that he had already tried to sign the group she and Beyonce were in back in '92 or '93. And he had her sing lead on an unreleased song back in '94 or '95. She wasn't on Star Search until 2002 or 2003.

He already knew Tamar and had worked with her before.

.....

this is easy..Prince is, a musician's musician...respected by those that devoted
there whole lives to the art. You'll hear it from every diff corner of music in the last 25 years. So why should someone of his stature have to sit there talking to a bunch of kids who are being put together like New Kids on the BLock or the Backstreet Boys? He needs publicity to keep this album going but I never thought he'd do this. Let him play and walk off. That would be perfect. Can you imagine Prince offering advice to these guys?

Yes, most certainly he is above this kind of manufactured crap.
