jthad1129 said: Prince doesn't deserve it nearly as much as the marketing genius' at the record company. By saying there is purple ticket inside (has anyone seen one yet?), not posting it on itunes for sale, posting two videos from the cd and letting us hear 4 tracks from the cd before it hits the shelves, AND canning the hits compilation (for competition), was incredible!!
Thats how you get a #1 cd It also helps that Prince is s musical genius and had the best tour of 2004 to get fans interested in him again. After the years of indie releases and one shot deals that didn't quite work, it's great to see Universal fully behind Prince's work. The purple ticket promotion helps, and it's a legit promotion. Who wouldn't want to win a trip to Prince's mansion to watch a concert? You have to consider this... in a music world that's vapid, where music video channels don't play videos, and radio is controlled by Clear Channel (who ignore Prince's music), Prince scoring a #1 album is quite an accomplishment for Prince and Universal. I'd say the score is about even. Clear Channel not playing his music? Cool... so we'll package the new album in with a concert ticket or offer a purple ticket promotion. If you play the game by Clear Channel's rules, you'll always lose. Therefore you need new ways to get your music heard and sold. Why anyone would call this #1 record a fraud, when the real fraud is MTV/VH1/BET and Clear Channel, is beyond me. "You don't exist again. It's all taken away from you. To me, the benefits of this Prince hitting #1 thing are very important for fans in two ways:
1) It will give him clout for the future. Remasters? More experimental albums? Taking more risks? Bring it... 2) It will push him to stop sounding so fucking desperate. Looking for hits on Rave...talking about the bank all the time...whining about his masters constantly...maybe now he'll stop. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

That's great....considering he did Saturday Night Live weeks before the release of the cd. He did not really do any other TV. shows to push the album yet, besides playing & performing with Tamar. It's really all about how you market the product anyway. The contest thing was a big push in that. Overall i'm glad to see a good album at #1. The charts have been horrible & still are.

This is indeed a great accomplishment. Yes, Universal has promoted the album to the max, but, like most all great products, without marketing, they usually do not make it to the masses on their own.
Let's hope this continues with another single, something the "kids" can dance to like "Love" which could have a great dance remix. Then, after that, something like "Incense and Candles" as they head into the summer vacation and have their "summer loves." They should immediately release thise to itunes to keep the momemtum going and hold the number one spot for more than one week, then announce the tour the following week, followed by the next single with a great video. Throw this in with a few TV appearances while the album is #1 and this momemtum should carry the sales into the beginning of summer when the tour starts and the great show keeps the sales up through the summer. Is it going to sell 10 or even 5 million copies . . . no. But if he can sell more than 2 million without packaging it like he did with Musicology, this will be a great commercial success.

So it doesn't seem like the leak of the album 2 weeks early effected sales any - I wonder if it helped push the album? Record companies really moan about how the internet is costing them sales - this result proves that if the product is good, it will sell, and maybe the reason why sales have dropped off so badly is the music they're putting out just doesn't cut it.

Brilliant second half, tension filled, and an unpredictable, incredible ending. Had the audience gasping for more. You think the ring will get him caught by the police, because it didn't go in the water, But this ain't no Hollywood film. It's the most intense, truest philosphical statement ever... Woody pulls the rug out from under you, proving that luck is blind. In a game like tennis, with rules, the ball coming back at you is a lost point. However, since life has no rules, and no God/justice, the ring coming back at you can be good, or bad... It's all luck. Brilliant film. Noticed you gave Big Momma's House the same score. I just gotta laugh. [Edited 3/29/06 4:31am] But you have to ask yourself, does he really need to do what he did?? That was outrageous!! You don't go killing people these days just because some girl is carrying your baby!! Let's agree to disagree. And if you want to discuss movies further, come see us at rottentomatoes.com. You know what might possibly help in sales. Prince should have one of the singles from 3121, Black Sweat mainly, on the next NOW CD collection. I saw an ad for the new NOW 21 CD and it just dawned on me that it could make someone interested in 3121 if they dig Black Sweat. I think it can work. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I would add: 3) maybe some curious people who buy the album will search for more Prince stuff and become fans. In my case, I became a fan after listening to The Most Beautiful Girl and asking a friend to record an album for me. I was hooked and TODAY I know Prince has written much stronger material than TMBGITW. The non-fans that buy it will know the Camille voice, the minimalist funk of BS, the guitar work of Fury and etc. Maybe they will dive into great records like Gold, SOTT and Parade like I did...who knows?

Handclapsfingasnapz said: DarkKnight1 said: If it wasnt a contest, there wouldnt be charts. His chart position doesnt change my listening habits either. But it is still a little gratifying to see my favorite musician back on top and in the spotlight. Kinda like when the Cowboys won superbowls back in the 90's. Our favorite teams/players/musicians are believe it or not a reflection of who we are or what we like. sure, but unlike most people i really don't need instant gratification/vindication by the way of seeing my favorite artists get awards. i dig who i dig because of what they do and how they do it, not because of whatever kudos and tangible awards they receive or are/should/could/would be capable of receiving. Ol' boy couldn't have financed half the stuff you and I get from him if he never charted. You sell a lot of records, it puts pennies in your coffers, there are people who keep track of these things, and here's what they found - Prince sold more albums in the US than anyone else this last week. 'Unlike most people'? I wouldn't be so presumptious as to deny the truth in that any more than I'd wish to posit it. You're just too cool for school aren't ya, Dansa, and yet still a dedicated follower of fashion, be it the norm or otherwise. Success for Prince, be it in the form of awards or high album sales is still relevant to you if you are still a fan as it has a tangible bearing on what he produces. Whether you think it has a positive effect is a whole other matter though.

it isn't. like i'd mentioned, i appreciate 'im a helluva lot more for how talented/creative he is and not for chart placements & awards. how fucking hard is that for you to comprehend?

I'm happy about this primarily because it gives Prince more clout within the industry. As a big fan of the proteges, it will be a lot easier to launch outside projects if Prince himself is not viewed as the washed-up has-been so many people from Howard Stern to Wendy Williams have made him out to be. Perhaps this will help Tamar and get the Liza Lena project out quicker.
