Summarize this thread in a few sentences...

1) X (or Y or Z or ...) said he/she didn't like P because (x2 nerve/7 Y?)

2) Yeah who cares, she/he is a fat fuck
high on crack
ignorant
talentless
stupid
frustrated
ANYWAY

OR

That's not true, he/she said he/she liked Prince
licked his ass
was spotted with him on...

Maybe it's possible people don't like Prince, despite his genius, even if they're famous??

-----
Of course everyone does not have to like him but, this is a fan site. What kind of reaction did you think this thread would get.

I think a lot of celebs lick ass when it benefits them. Even Lenny Kravitz said that most people in the music industry would never want to follow Prince on stage but they will never admit it.

Since when does MJ hate Prince??? That is new to me!!

Not true! Prince said to a group of us a pre-show sound check (Detroit) that He and MJ still speak on the phone from time to time and that was 2002.

Good point. Most of the examples in this thread are speculation.

I'll add Branford Marsalis to this list, though.

Does the whole Marsalis family not like Prince? About 20+ years ago I read this article in a local paper in which Wynton dissed Prince so bad. It made me SO mad! mad Man, I wish I could find this article again. mad

If you're looking for Cool J lyrics, then yes sexkitten, you are correct, they don't exist. But "A silly rapper talkin' silly shit" are from Prince's 'Dead On It', from the Black Album where P's mocking rap.

Rick James said "Prince is mentally disturbed. You cant take his music seriously. He sings songs about oral sex and incest. Something else, he doesnt want to be black. My job is to keep reality over this little creep. And if he doesnt like what I'm saying he can kick my ass. He's so far out of touch, it makes me angry."

Yeah,I remember those comments.Rick also got pissed when Prince showed up at one of his concerts in 1983,trying to steal attention away from The Mary Jane Girls."I don't mind",James said."Princess obviously came to learn from a pro".

Both Prince and Rick James had their first album in 1978. Rick's first album, "Come Get It!" which contained the hits "You And I" and "Mary Jane" did much better than Prince's first album, "For You". The next year, 1979, Rick did "Bustin' Out Of L Seven" and he also worked with Teena Marie on her first album, "Wild and Peaceful" which contained "Sucker For Your Love", "Deja Vu", and "I Can't Love Any More". Rick definately made a much bigger splash than Prince in the beginning.

In 1979, Prince released his second album "Prince" and was starting to get noticed with his disco hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover". "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" and "Sexy Dancer" were getting plenty of airplay too. Prince also performed on "American Bandstand" in January of 1980. All this was gaining Prince a following.

Meanwhile, Rick had just released his third album, "Fire It Up", in 1979 (he did two albums that same year) and went on tour to promote it. Prince was the opening act for Rick on this tour. Prince had a little success with the album, "Prince", but Rick had more success with his earlier projects and already had a following.

For Prince's first two albums, he was fairly tame as far as outrageousness goes. Rick, on the other hand, was already singing about drugs, prostitution, sex, etc. Rick was also wild as hell on the stage. He would pull out a big ass joint and tell the audience to "Fire It Up". I think that Prince may have seen, on that tour, what it takes to make it big....shock value. Then Prince's outrageousness began. Every night the two of them tried to outstage each other. From what I've heard, that was a hell of a tour. I was absolutely dying to see it back in the day.
[Edited 2/4/05 7:12am]

Thank you VainAndy. you are always a wealth of info. I never knew that Rick and Prince came out the same year. It always seemed Rick was out much earlier than Prince

This was also discussed in a 1990 issue of Rolling Stone magazine.O'Connor explains "He continually said that he was gonna beat the shit out of me.His problem is that I did a song of his ("Nothing Compares 2 U)" without him being involved. He's jealous. And he did say to me that he wishes I had never done his song.I think that, frankly, that song saved his fucking ass.He was in serious financial trouble until that song happened".

OUCH!
eek

That's funny! There is debate over the accuracy of what really happened. Nevertheless, that song made Sinead. Where is she now? or even after "Nothing Compares to U"? She should be licking Prince's boots. (no pun intended, just making a statement about that dumb dumb Sinead, lol)

It'a also worth noting that,in these days (early 90s),O'Connor had problems with ALOT of other celebrities too.Remember Frank Sinatra's infamous comment ("She deserves a good kick in the ass")? A few harsh words were also exchanged between her and MC Hammer too.

what's funny about the Prince story is the way she kept insisting that her version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" saved Prince's ass...lol...she's acting as if he was dirt poor until she came along and "rescued" him with a big-selling remake. That's ludicrous.

Yeah,I agree. He obviously wanted to hang out with Prince, but when Prince ignored him,it must have hurt his pride a little, lol. Thus,he felt the need to trash Prince in an interview.

Look, I love Prince as much as the next person, but people, Prince has demonstrated a propensity to be a total meglomaniac asshole. Sneering at people or completely ignoring those who greet you is just not a way to make friends, I don't care how talented you are.

Everyone respects his talent, but lots of people disliked him personally. That said, he seeme to be a much better person since the late 90's.

who cares? she can't even sing on key. She idolizes Chaka and even though Chaka has said in interviews she is constantly reminding Mary of her tone and not singing flat.

Ask Mary J. about Chaka
Mary, is Chaka on the radio?
No!

I've listened to Mary's last couple songs, and she's singing really hard with her voice, almost like she's lost the ability to control her own timbre. It's kind of painful, like when Britney Spears had all those dancers dance so hyper around her in that song Sometimes. It just doesn't fit.

Sorry that part about the radio was totally lost on me. I mean are you saying that Mary being on the radio automatically gives her the final word on someone like say... Chaka? I mean Ella Fitzgerald isn't on heavy rotation either but does that mean Mary can hold a candle to her? No. Ask Mary about Chaka and unless she's still messing with those drugs she'll tell you she could only hope to stand in Chaka's shoes as far as talent is concerned. One more thing while I'm on this topic, I wish people would stop confusing record sales and radio air play with real talent. The two are in no way related. I have a lot more respect for real musicians and singers who most people have probably never heard of. Anyway like I was saying before, Mary's opinion of Prince is trivial seeing as how she needs to concentrate more on her own craft.

Why doesn't Margie Cox like him? Is that from the days of TaMara and The Scene? What happened?

Prince kept her under contract for years with her Prince-penned record on the shelf collecting dust. In her words more-or-less, she wanted out of the contract just so she could get her own music out to the public and make a living. Prince wouln't do it.

yeah i read that too. she was quite angry in the interveiw she gave here a while back, with the release of her first album (finally). in the first edction she even said in the liner notes 'no thanks to prince', then removed it later.

pretty ironic that prince would do that to her after being through it with WB

Seems to me from this thread theres not many famous people who dislike
Prince's music , they just dislike the person. Pink has stated on a TV
interview she likes Prince's music by the way , I've seen it too.

Mary J Blige and Prince are friendly. Fred Durst doesn't like him, because Prince snubbed his punk-ass. I don't think Carson Daly likes Prince after he made Carson look stupid for asking him dumb questions on TRL. Quincy Jones does not like Prince because he didn't kiss Quincy's ass. Remember Qunicy did a history of black music series on VH1 a couple of years ago and pretty much omitted Prince.

I forget the Boy George quote, but I remember that it's a very old quote and that often Boy George is mis-quoted because of his sense of humour. Often he is quoted as being deadly serious by the media when in fact he had his tongue firmly in his cheek.

*wonders if anyone dare make a quip about his tongue being in between someone else's cheeks* lol
Boy George fancied Prince lol he met him once and Prince gave him a filthy look lol biggrin he mentions Prince a few times in his autobiography i cant remember everything he said but he wanted Prince badly and was convinced he was gay.

Sepember 1990 after the Nude tour Prince met Sinead O'Conner at his Beverly Hills home. Sinead didnt fit Prince's vision of women, epitomised by the lingerie wearing Apollonia 6. Prince didnt like Sinead's outspoken feminist and political views. Sinead O'Connor told the Irish music magazine Hotpress that "Prince told me to wear a dress and stop swearing. He starting talking like Frank Sinatra saying he was going to kick my ass. He was laughing and saying that my mouth got me into trouble again. When I tried to leave he left me strand at 5:30 a.m. without a ride back to my hotel room. I think I fucking saved his ass by doing that song. I will never sing that song again. That incident totally spoiled that song for me."

Actually, Carson likes Prince still.
He[Carson] was interviewed about that episode, and Carson didn't diss him during the interview--he simply defended his stance.

During that TRL episode, Carson gave Prince a compliment about "In the world of today's throwaway music, your music still stands the test of time."

Prince then looked at Carson (probably misunderstanding what he said) and said (with a very displeased look on his face and even more harsh tone) "what? What does that mean?"

"Carson then went to explain that todays music tends to be manufactured for a quick hit, but Prince's music is enduring and had substance (these aren't the exact words, but close).

Instead of accepting the compliment, Prince then said "I don't suppose you'd have anything to do with that?"

Carson, then noticing that Prince was on the offensive, explained and defended his stance by saying, "My job is like a bartender. I may not like the drinks I'm serving, but my job is to serve the drinks to my customers."

Prince then shrugged, looking like he'd been defeated, and said "o.k." sarcastically.

It was one of those momments where PRINCE LOOKED LIKE AN ASS. It was sooooo obvious that the Carson had the upper hand in that exchange becuase the entire time, Carson seemed genuine and Prince looked bitter and uncomfortable.

It was a truly sad momment for Prince. I mean, that shit, the open letter to Maddona, sueing his fans, Major backing of Rave by Arista--and still nothing but flops and dismissals of his music.

That was a period of time in his life where dispite his lyrics, I'm pretty sure he was bitter about ALOT of things. And instead of tapping into that anger and making kick ass music, he created more hippie-go-lucky positivity songs shallow in their execution and lacking any life--how could someone going through the negativity he was experiencing then actually pretend to be happy and be convincing about it on in his music? No one could that--not even Prince.

But if you watch that episode or if they ever air that snippet, you'll see that Prince was the one who really looked like the ass---it's one of those supremely cringworthy momments for a Prince fan. I think his tick tick bang performance in Graffiti Bridge was easier to stomach.
