These young cats should do themselves a favor and got talk 2 some older retired players about the long term impact of receiving and giving out these type of hits.

It is NOT a good look 10 years after retiring.

Funny thing about that Gray is alot of the retired cats actually frown at the new rules the league has regarding the KO hits, they say the league is too soft now, lol!! Last night on the MNF post game show Matt Millien and Steve Young went back and forth for a good ten minutes on these new rules, of course Matt was aganist them and Steve was for them.

Ask the hittor,.............the ask the hittee.

Stronger, faster players and better engineered helmets being used as weapons. American football is a VIOLENT sport, I just don't see how they can change that without ruining the game. We'll see how well this works when they start suspending a bunch of the league's stars and the fans revolt.

Also, I've been wondering, how many concussions do hockey, soccer, rugby and Australian rules players have?

These guys simply don't know how 2 tackle. The impact will be less that u think if they just tackle properly.

In some cases yes because intimidation is a part of the game the league has allowed it 2 go on. This new Commish has his own agenda and I think it is good 4 the league. I don't want 2 see anyone's life destroyed because of a single hit. Stingley was one 2 many..............

I've played safety and cornerback since high school and even now for semi-pro...

And you're taught tackle head up..see what you're tackling...so I understand the learn to tackle comment... Asante Samuel is an example..he's horrible

But defensive players are also taught "seperate the receiver from the ball!"...If Robinson tackled Jackson instead of trying to separate, it's a first down catch and the coach is sitting you for some plays

Helmet to helmet is wrong and is already a rule...Using the helmet as a weapon (spearing) is also a rule already in the books...enforcing these two is all good with me...

Also noticed how anyone who has played defense is against this and anyone who hasn't (or never played) is for it..

Like when you ask the boxer why he box ....

The thing i hate about this shit is yes okay if you wanna fine the players for this type of

hit severely yes but don't alter the outcome of future games particularly the playoffs by

suspending players which would be total bullshit. Now if it is a deliberate blatant hit

where the player is launching himself after the ball has missed the receiver such as the

case with Merriweather hitting Todd Heap or TJ Ward laying out a Bengals receiver two

weeks ago a one game suspension should suffice. Let's not overreact to one weekend of

football. If the league is so fucking concerned about these injuries let's scrap the plans

of an 18 game season. Oh that's right the league wants to have their cake and eat it

too. Money!

If you're a fan of the Steelers or the Ravens...a team with a awesome defense..you can't be happy... Will those kind of teams second guess how they approach the game ....

In the future, players going to have to sign a waiver ,so they can't sue the league...lol

The players union is surprisingly quiet about this...

Except for Merriweather, the other fines might be appealed

Sheldon Browns hit on Reggie Bush was a classic..it made the cover of SI..would that be considered too violent?

On ESPN..we all watched that segment "Jacked up!!"....now those same people are going to denounce hits?...

This is precisely why this "solution" is a knee jerk and hypocritical one. The media, coaches, players and the public LOVE to see these kinda hits yet all of a sudden folks wanna be up in arms. I'm all for making things safer but it's almost an oxymoron. Just put flags on 'em already.

One of these games coming up..there's going to be a WR coming across the middle and the safety is going to hesitate or let up..just like when that Giant let go of a sack a few years back and the crowd is gonna boo...then what?....in the words of those hypocrites "C'Mon Man!!!"

Exactly!!!....it's not about being Macho or anything either..it's about denying a catch and maximum effort

If I do that in my game Saturday..I might be on that bench quick..

Kudos to Duanta Robinson for appealing his $50K fine for his hit on Desean Jackson...

It's the same price as Merriweathers (huh?)..... And it's a shoulder to sternum hit...

The replay shows his head down..but his head doesn't hit Jackson at all...

Also, on Mike and Mike, they're reporting that one the NFL website...you can purchase a picture of some of these hits!!!!!
So you can fine Harrison for the hit...but sell a picture of him making that hit?....

It was a third party vendor who automatically uploads pics to be sold to the NFL site. They've removed the pics and changed the procedure.

Harrison is considering retirement. $75K is 1/10th his base salary for the season ($755,000).

Steve Young is the ONLY player or talking head I have seen come out in support of the new enforcement of the rules 100%. Everyone else seems to be saying, "yeah, it's a problem, but we're not sure this is the correct solution."

Some of the obvious things I've seen/heard mentioned...

They league does not want anyone to be paralized on national television. Or worse, killed.

The league does not want congress to pull a MLB and decide they need to investigate the problem.

The league does not want anybody to sue them for negligence, so they're being as proactive as possible.

confused Of course it is. A college player was paralized this past weekend. Is it likely? Not extremely, but much more than it used to be.

OOOOh. Gotcha. My bad. I totally agree with you on that. I know it's something they choose to do, but I don't believe for a second that any of them are expecting something that serious to happen.

Exactly. Now there are some sports where u get in the arena and u are prepared 4 life altering events such as boxing, but football, basketball, baseball...............no way do u expect not 2 go home intact.

The reality is that it may happen anytime you step on the field. The same way as driving you run

the risk of getting involved in a car accident. You can't pussify the league but yet you glorify and profit selling big hits. Mark Schlereth to his credit went in the NFL's ass. He stated that the only illegal

hit on sunday was the Brandon Merriweather hit. Here's the link.

Saw all that. I watch ESPN/ESPN2 for most of the day, from early in the morning until after PTI. I'm in the camp who believes the NFL IS overreacting, but understands where they are coming from.

Science is going to keep making it harder for them to justify the way the game is played right now. More facts about these hits and their affect will keep being overturned. To me it does seem more like the league is just covering it's own ass than anything else. But as was discussed for many posts in this thread, those aren't textbook tackles, either. More to the point, they never were. So yeah, it's part of the game (NFL's Greatest HITS!), but it doesn't mean it can't be changed in a way that will lessen the risk (which will NEVER be completely removed).

I don't remember seeing THAT MANY intensely violent hits in one weekend in a long time, though, so I fully expect things to mellow out a bit in the future. But the audience for the NFL is still growing rapidly and that means money, money, money. In that regard you have to expect the league to stay on top of this in the foreseeable future.

I really don't see how they could possibly think 18 games is a good idea with all this going on at the same time, though.

Debo didn't retire. James Harrison is still gonna terrorize opponents. He just needed

a day to cool off. He and his mom actually met with Joshua Cribbs after the game

to make sure he was okay. The fine was totally bullshit. Even Cribbs said the hit was

clean.

It does. It will be interesting to see how he adapts with the other recievers currently on the team. It's not like he's going to stop passing or anything. But Clark was definitely a favorite target for those quick over the middle shots.
