Grammy Award winner and platinum record producer and artist Bruno Mars performs songs that seem both vintage and modern, inaugurating everything from Motown to new wave to hip-hop, at Barclays Center on Saturday in New York.

The suit lapels spread wide, the afro spiraled high, and the disco ball burned bright at Bruno Mars’ show in New York on Saturday night.

At the Barclays Center stop of the star’s “Moonshine Jungle” tour, fans could have been forgiven for wondering what decade they’d just stumbled into. The 27-year-old’s show aimed to recreate a bygone era of flashy entertainment, a disco-age, tip-of-the-fedora to natty, ’70s acts like The Jacksons, The Tramps and The Bee Gees.

To wit, the show opened with all eight musicians and singers outfitted in the same beet-red suits and gold-flecked, cheetah-print shirts. The kitschy jungle theme continued as the sounds of parrots, panthers and gorillas blared in the background, though these beasts seemed no more ferocious than those in “The Lion King.”

More than anything, Mars’ show aimed for breezy entertainment, a sort meant to leave no one out. As telegraphed by the title of his 2010 debut CD, “Doo-Wops and Hooligans,” Mars’ gestalt straddles two poles. His songs seem both vintage and modern, inaugurating everything from Motown to new wave to hip-hop. His vocals balance sweetness with sting, while his look, and character, straddles the earthy and the exotic. Born Peter Fernandez in Hawaii, Mars boasts a Filipino mother and a Puerto Rican father, born in Brooklyn.

Befitting his Pacific rearing, Mars’ music has an Island ease and warmth. He opened with the hyper-romantic swoon “Moonshine” before moving into the hyperkinetically catchy “Natalie.” Then, for “Treasure,” he brought in a disco beat which, combined with its original tune, has made this one of the signature songs of this summer.

Given the high percentage of romantic pieces in Mars’ repertoire — enough to rival a teen idol — it’s no surprise the audience consisted largely of couples or large groups of young women. The latter enjoy the star’s “bad boy” persona, one so knowingly faux, they can still imagine taking him home to mom.

The voice of Bruno Mars, who performed Saturday at Barclay's Center in New York, has the purity, cream and range of mid-period Michael Jackson. Like the King of Pop, Mars pines for the prerock-era role of the pure entertainer, a classic song-and-dance man.

Mars’ voice enhances the image. It has the purity, cream and range of mid-period Michael Jackson, right before the fall. Like the King of Pop, Mars pines for the prerock-era role of the pure entertainer, a classic song-and-dance man.

To enhance his all-in-one-approach, he took time to peel out a guitar solo and pound on the drums. He inhabited the glad-handing part so winningly, it hardly seemed to matter that the show wasn’t big on risk or depth.

Mars reached for more emotion in the few slower numbers. But his forte remains energy and engagement, embracing pop at its most colorful and pleasing.

Bruno Mars plays Newark’s Prudential Center on Monday.

Bruno Mars masterful at Barclays Center

Bruno Mars performs at Barclays Center on June

Photo credit: Brad Barket/Getty Images for Atlantic Records | Bruno Mars performs at Barclays Center on June 29, 2013, as part of his Moonshine Jungle Tour.

Bruno Mars stopped about halfway through his show at Barclays Center Saturday night to deliver a bit of what he called “R&B 101.”

He instructed his impressive eight-piece band, all in matching red suits like his, to deliver a James Brown-like breakdown, before he offered a dramatic pause and screamed, “Damn!” to the delight of the roaring capacity crowd.

It was part of a bit, but, to be honest, the music world would be a much better place if Mars’ entire 90-minute show was seen as “R&B 101” or even “Concerts 101.” Mars’ Moonshine Jungle Tour, his first since graduating to arena headliner, is sleek and well-choreographed, with everything from the elegant staging that lifted him up to deliver a raucous version ofGinuwine’s “Pony” to the snippets of Prince’s “Purple Rain” guitar solo that toughened up “Marry You” falling into place at exactly the right time.

Mars and his band, The Hooligans, made the intricate dance moves in his glorious disco-funk anthem, “Treasure,” look easy and the Smokey Robinson-styled breakdown added to “Just the Way You Are” feel natural. Their skill as live performers makes even Mars’ lesser songs, such as the lightweight “Young Girls” or “Natalie,” sound potent, while elevating “Grenade,” with its new dramatic flourishes, and “Locked Out of Heaven” into something memorable.

However, Mars is at his best when he reveals his emotions. He called his smash ballad, “When I Was Your Man,” “the hardest song I’ve ever written and the hardest song for me to sing,” before turning in a passionate version. And his throwback soul number, “If I Knew,” which he mixed with his “Twilight” ballad “It Will Rain,” was stunning.

Those songs showed that as good as this current tour is, Mars can get even better.

SETLIST: Moonshine / Natalie / Treasure / Money (That’s What I Want) > Billionaire / Show Me > Pony > Candy Rain / Marry You / If I Knew > It Will Rain / Runaway Baby / Young Girls / When I Was Your Man / Grenade / Just the Way You Are // ENCORE: Locked Out Of Heaven / Gorilla

From Rhapsodyincolour's blog, Bruno gave a fan free tickets to his concert last night! biggrin

Anonymous asked:
Do you know why Bruno gave that girl free tickets?

I don’t know all the details but from her tweets, she met Bruno at his hotel and he asked if she had ticket. She said that she didn’t have any so he took her name and put her on the list for ticket collection. She also said that she’s met him many times before and that he recognises her smile

MUSIC REVIEW

A Peacock in Spite of Himself

Bruno Mars, Just Part of the Band at Barclays Center

“This is R&B 101,” Bruno Mars announced Saturday night at Barclays Center, fixing a stare on one woman in the audience. He cued the band to crescendo, and then to stop on a dime, leaving empty air just as he exhaled a silky “damn.” Afterward he paced the stage with an exaggerated peacock strut while encouraging his bandmates to try to outsuave him. “I don’t mean to toot my own horn,” Mr. Mars said when they were done, his megawatt smile turned up to gigawatt, “but, ‘Beeeeep!’ ”

For a boast, it was completely bereft of ego, Mr. Mars delivering it with an implicit wink that acknowledged its limitations. He is a songwriter and producer turned frontman, a platinum star who can sell out arenas like this one, but who’s most at ease being just one of the guys in the band.

So much of this exuberant but not quite barnburning show, part of the Moonshine Jungle tour, was designed to de-emphasize Mr. Mars — he wore a red suit, a leopard-print tank top and red patent-leather horsebit loafers, just like everyone else in his band; you couldn’t help but think of the Sheraton Waikiki-playing family band Mr. Mars got his start in as a child. You could argue that Philip Lawrence — one of Mr. Mars’s writing and producing partners in the Smeezingtons and his main background singer and hypeman here — stood out more, simply for accenting his outfit with a hat.) Rarely was Mr. Mars out in front alone, typically preferring to be in lock step with some or all of his band members who moved with far more enthusiasm and pluck than he.

It was less like the concert of a superstar than one of the great funk and soul bands of the 1970s: not as ostentatious as, say, the Love Unlimited Orchestra, or as sinuous as Slave, but more in the tradition of Earth, Wind & Fire, or perhaps Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, especially when Mr. Mars’s band slipped into the slow funk reverie of “Treasure,” all heartbeat bass and horn stabs.

That decade is a touchstone for Mr. Mars: a huge disco ball hovered overhead throughout the show, and on the T-shirts at the merchandise stands, the photos of him looked as if they were stills from a late-1970s rough-trade documentary.

But as is clear from Mr. Mars’s second album, “Unorthodox Jukebox”(Atlantic), which was released in December, that era just one of many tools at his disposal. He is the most formidable synthesizer of styles going in pop today, taking in doo-wop, lovers rock reggae, torch songs, 1950s rock, 1970s funk, 1990s R&B and more, making for a sound that’s both pan-stylistic and, in a way, panracial. Mr. Lawrence nodded at this, with a wink, when introducing Mr. Mars as “the only Puerto Rican on the Moonshine Jungle tour!” (Mr. Mars is primarily of Puerto Rican and Filipino heritage; his backing band is primarily black.)

Mr. Mars channeled Jerry Lee Lewis during the mash-up of “Money (That’s What I Want)” and “Billionaire,” and during “Runaway Baby” he did a James Brown side-shuffle. At the top of the encore, he emerged playing “Harlem Shake,” or something like it, on a drum kit. But while he’s versatile, there’s nothing louche about Mr. Mars, from his pearly whites to his fangless flirting to the prim directness of his lyrics, which have great bones yet rarely ooze. He was at his most dangerous during the midshow medley of mid-’90s-to-early-2000s R&B — Aaliyah’s “Rock the Boat,” Ginuwine’s “Pony,” Soul for Real’s “Candy Rain,” Ghost Town DJs’ “My Boo.”

He was more convincing when manhandling the songs: “Grenade” opened like a superhero theme and was delivered with the drama of a bolero, and he was arresting on the modern doo-wop of “If I Knew.”

“When I Was Your Man” is the most anguished song of Mr. Mars’s career, and here it was the showpiece. He stood near the front of the stage, bathed in light, backed only by two keyboardists. Just before, he’d closed out “Young Girls” with his most ferocious singing of the night, and he kept it up, putting that power to work to sell hurt. For a few minutes, he was a gripping, undeniable presence. Beep! Beep! Beep!

Bruno Mars landing a success in Brooklyn

  • Last Updated: 6:42 PM, June 30, 2013

headshot

Midway through Bruno Mars’ show at Barclays Center on Saturday night, there was an unexpected moment of comedy. As he broke down the seductive slow jam “If I Knew” and announced his intention to sing to a lucky lady named India in the front row, the Hawaiian acknowledged this schmaltzy routine as being “R & B 101” before going in for the kill. “Hey India, let me introduce myself,” he purred. “I’m the guy on the ticket.”

His self-aware wit is just a bonus though, because Mars’ talent as a musician is the main reason to admire him. Despite only having released two albums to date (the last one being 2012’s excellent “Unorthodox Jukebox”), Mars already seems to have covered the major areas of pop-music history in his relatively small body of work. The Moonshine Jungle tour is where the singer is proving his status as a world-class scavenger by taking his many influences and unashamedly weaving them into his own hugely entertaining act.

The shifts are often seamless. In the first hour, he flipped styles and genres with an ease that was almost disorientating, going from the disco-funk licks of “Treasure” to the reggae rhythms of “Show Me” and even the harder-edged, new-wave feel of “Runaway Baby” in the blink of an eye. As if to further emphasize his ability to resemble an iPod playing in “shuffle” mode, Mars threw in ad-libs of Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want),” Ginuwine’s “Pony” and even a sly reference to Prince’s “Purple Rain” with what seemed to be minimal effort.

But while Mars may be the brains of the operation, his show is most definitely an ensemble act. The eight-piece band were not just hired hands playing the notes as instructed, they were dancers, hype men and, if the onstage chemistry is anything to go by, his best buddies too. The sense of solidarity between them is underlined by the fact that they all wore identical outfits — red suits, leopard-skin vests and gold chains. It was possibly the best example of pimp chic seen in New York since they filmed “Shaft.”

As expected, the big payoff comes during the encore of “Locked Out of Heaven,” which is not just Mars’ best tune, but one of the great pop songs of this young decade. Period. Years from now, its Police-referencing riffs will still be lighting up rooms and making people dance spontaneously, so it was no surprise to see Mars treat it with the fanfare it deserves by prefacing it with his own drum solo and unleashing a blast of golden glitter into the crowd during the already sparkling chorus. It’s a showpiece end to a set filled with catchy songs, killer threads and a healthy dose of humor. It really is hard not to get a massive kick out of Bruno Mars one way or another.

He’ll do it all again tonight at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

Music people seem to be enjoying Bruno's show, and that's great for him, it kinda makes up for the disregard Doo-Wops & Hooligans tour had seen 2 years ago. razz Anyway I don't think Treasure is getting THAT promoted now that Bruno is on tour, he won't perform in any TV shows in the next weeks, I hope Treasure is not getting off Top 10 in each country.. At least.

I was at Bruno's show Saturday night and I have to say, this was one of the best live shows I've seen in a looooooong time. And I've seen a lot of shows ; including many Prince shows. I really don't think I've experienced the kind of energy and intensity by a performer like this since the '87 Lovesexy shows I saw at MSG. This guy is the real and I believe he will be around for a long time to come. I think this record is his 'Off the Wall' and his next record will be his 'Thriller.' While I think Bruno owes a lot more to Smokey Robinson, Earth Wind And Fire, and Machael Jackson, than he does do Prince, I do believe the two have a few key things in common. Both are extremely at ease on stage. Both have laser beem like focus and seem to aim for, and achieve, perfecton in their live shows. And both have that certain something that makes it so you just can't seem to take your eyes off them while they're in a room. They're rock stars. Again, this guy is the real deal.
