Review of the Columbus, OH show (July 10)

Concert review | Bruno Mars: Multitalented singer holds audience rapt

By Kevin Joy

The Columbus Dispatch Thursday July 11, 2013 12:18 AM

The only things Bruno Mars didn’t do last night were serve up concession-stand nachos and direct traffic on Lane Avenue after the concert.

The performer had just about every other detail covered.

His pipes were strong and soulful.

He handled several decent stints on guitar and drums.

He needed only basic small talk to elicit screams more apt for a Justin Bieber show.

Gold chains, fedora and leopard-print garb? Check.

The petite 27-year-old held a capacity Value City Arena crowd in his palm throughout a 90-minute show that sliced, diced and threw heaps of old-school flavor on his already-throwback radio tunes.

A ginormous disco ball spun during the funky Treasure, with Instagram-hued live video of Mars projected on giant screens — the collective result making it tough to determine whether it was 2013 or 1973.

Slacker anthem Billionaire was paired with the classic Money (That’s What I Want). Knowing the whims of a diverse house, he snuck in song snippets by Soul for Real, Ghost Town DJ’s and Ginuwine, whose randy jam Pony Mars once sang at a talent show in high school.

A slowed-down groove and gyrations to match shaded the reggae-lite Our First Time. Lest moralists object, the upbeat Marry You quickly followed, with the room singing as one about the pursuit of matrimony.

The star also offered a few tips for singles. For one thing, it helps to be a musician.

“I’m the dude on the ticket,” said a sweaty, smiling Mars — who, as he must declare on each stop of the 87-date Moonshine Jungle tour — pitched woo to an unsuspecting audience member.

His silver bullet, employed thrice: Cut the music mid-song, tip one’s hat and offer a breathy, bedroom-eyed damn.

But Mars didn’t handle all of the heavy lifting.

Joined by a backup vocalist plus a seven-piece band known as the Hooligans, Mars and the good-natured, Goodwill-chic ensemble often stepped — and snapped — together as one.

It allowed Mars to share in the moment, it didn’t feel rehearsed and it was impossible not to smile watching the goofball bunch play off each other’s quirks.

Mars, a young Elvis impersonator during his Hawaii childhood, offered shades (and shakes) reminiscent of the King. He also channeled Michael Jackson and James Brown — the latter during a fiery, revival-style take onRunaway Baby.

The brass also added muscle to encore closer Locked Out of Heaven, which has been rightly compared to something the Police might once have recorded.

And while the show offered the perfunctory pyrotechnics and strobe lights, it did without the flying harnesses, catwalks and sprints along the floor aisles that seem almost mandatory for modern pop stars.

No matter. Mars didn’t need them.

The appeal of pseudo-simplicity was best defined during a quiet moment, when the singer growled through the ballad When I Was Your Man — a cutting ballad about regret that he said remains the hardest song to perform.

It’s powerful on the radio. In concert, bolstered by extra vocal reach and stronger piano chords, it gave goose bumps.

To that, there’s only one response: damn.

I know I'm late in posting my review, yesterday spent most of the day recovering from the amazing concert lol! BUT HERE'S MY REVIEW! excited

*********************************************************************************

Finally. After weeks of watching performances from the Moonshine Jungle tour on Youtube, I finally got to see Bruno Mars and his band perform live and in person on July 11. Let me say, there is no comparing watching the performances on Youtube and seeing it live in person. Absolutely no comparison. The show lives up to all the hype and then some and Bruno is even more electrifying and amazing live in person. And although I pretty much knew how the show would go from watching the performances on Youtube, it didn’t spoil the concert for me—it was just as fresh and exciting as watching the whole show for the first time.

I really don’t know more I can say that’s already been said in other reviews posted here of the show. Bottom line, Bruno and the band put on an amazing and incredible show. The showmanship that he and the band displayed is top-notch, and there isnt anybody out there right now doing what they do. As other reviews have stated, there are a mixture of ages, from the very young to the very old, and it was no different at the show here in Michigan. I saw young kids, tweens, teens, young adults, middle-agers and elderly folks. And from the sounds that I heard in the arena, EVERYONE had the time of their lives at the show! Even my 60 year old dad, who I dragged along and who isn’t a fan, really enjoyed himself and had to agree that Bruno and his band put on an “Excellent and amazing show” (his words).

Even though he isn’t a fan of Bruno, he really likes and appreciates good music—and he thoroughly enjoyed the music that Bruno and band performed. My dad said he was very impressed with the tightness of the band, how well choreographed and on point they all were. He especially liked the drummer (Bruno’s brother Eric) and the piano player (John Fossit).

Speaking of John, he performed this beautiful, elaborate piano solo as an intro to a very dramatic version of Grenade, which was one of the highlight performances of the evening imo. The horns really got showcased on that one and Bruno showed off his guitar playing skills. Another highlight of the evening was Bruno’s sizzling drum solo, which I always enjoyed watching on the Youtube clips but was 10x better seeing it live. He is fire on those drums! And my pops was really impressed and was like “Wow! He really played the mess outta those drums!”

Another standout performance of the night was the final song, Gorilla. Again, seeing it live is way more incredible than seeing in on Youtube. There is a certain palpable electrified energy that infiltrates the atmosphere and affects the entire arena from this performance. From the well timed explosions to Bruno’s gritty vocals and sweaty, passionate performance—he really feels this song and you can tell its his favorite song to perform and a lot of thought and planning went into making sure he closed out the night with a bang. And boy did he ever! Despite the song’s raunchy lyrics my dad really liked the Gorilla performance too-he enjoyed the explosions and pyrotechnics.

All in all, the show was fantastic, incredible, excellent, super polished & professional—REAL entertainment. A REAL live show put on by a super-talented REAL live performer and band. I dare anyone to go to this show and NOT have a good time, its impossible! My legs are still sore from all the jumping, dancing and going up and down the stairs from that night lol. We had really good seats—floor seats in the 6th row. We were seated in that last two chairs in the row that extended into the aisle which was cool. Other highlights for me personally was seeing Phredley, Bruno’s guitar player walk right past me and head backstage, and Bruno’s personal assistant Ryan Keomaka (sp?) standing about a couple feet away from me snapping pictures.

Speaking of pictures, unfortunately I have a pretty crappy camera phone so the pics I took do not do it any justice. I don’t have a smartphone with an amazing camera. So I apologize for the crappy quality. sad

I’m definitely glad I got the chance to go see his concert, and I highly recommend that people go see this concert if they have a chance. As a matter of fact I would love to go again and if I had the money, I would be in Chicago right now because that is where he is playing tonight.

Some comments I heard from the people around me during the concert:

This guy is the next Michael Jackson!

He’s the next Prince!

He’s so short but so powerful!

He’s so dreamy!

I want that trombone player! lol

Oh yeah, another cute moment that happened during the concert but not up on stage. When Bruno began singing Treasure, the guy sitting next to me got down on his knees and proposed to his girlfriend. He actually told me he was going to do that before the concert started and asked if I would take their picture, but he ended up having someone in the row behind us do it. It was a really sweet moment and I’m sure Bruno would’ve been delighted to know that a couple got engaged during one of his songs at his concert smile

No, Thank YOU Bruno and the Hooligans! Please come back to Michigan on your next tour! biggrin

A couple of other things I forgot to mention in my review, it wasnt until after the concert that I realized that he didnt perform Young Girls at this concert. A minor bummer since I like that song and I know he performed it during his earlier shows. Also, during the part when the band tries to put out their best pickup line on a woman in the audience, he only had the first guy (Doug?) and Phil do their lines, Kameron didnt do his "Girl, I would drink every last bit of your bathwater" line. It will be interesting to see what tweaks and changes the concert will undergo as the tour goes on. Bruno and the band were again dressed in their casual clothes (no suits) for the Detroit show. I wonder if he and the band will wear them again for the Chicago show or if the suits are indeed retired for good?

Some pics I took. Again sorry that my crappy camera phone didnt do these pics any justice sad

Reviews from the Detroit show (July 11)

July 12, 2013 at 1:29 am

Mars' moves bring old-school showmanship to Palace debut

Bruno Mars made his Metro Detroit debut count Thursday night, performing a dynamite 90-minute show before a sold-out Palace of Auburn Hills.

The 27-year-old showstopper and his knock-out eight piece band brought a true sense of old-school showmanship to the performance. Rather than stacking his band with performers his own age, Mars chose band members with some mileage on them, who didn’t look out of place in their ’70s-style wardrobes.

But while the stage was outfitted with hundreds of lights and backed by a full HD video screen, it was Mars and his band’s stylish moves — stepping in unison, dancing in circles, clowning around with one another all over the stage — that gave the show its warm yesteryear feel.

It helps that Mars is an extremely engaging, irresistible presence on stage. His pre- and post-show music contained selections by Prince, James Brown and Michael Jackson, and he showed shades of each of those legends during the show. But he’s no copycat, and he channels those influences and filters them through his own personal style, topping it off with his beaming, 1,000-watt smile. Put plainly, he’s a star, baby, and a hugely likable one at that.

Mars opened the show with “Moonshine,” the song from which his tour — dubbed the Moonshine Jungle — derives its name. During second song “Natalie,” he made a plea with the crowd. “Maybe you put your camera phones down and dance with us?” he asked. A giant disco ball dropped from the ceiling during “Treasure,” Mars’ current single, and he mixed in a piece of Barrett Strong's “Money (That’s What I Want)” during “Billionaire.”

He made other musical nods during the show, working in a piece of Ginuwine’s “Pony” into “Show Me” and adding in a bit of “Purple Rain” to the splendid “Marry You,” an unabashed highlight of the evening. He and his bandmates slowed the show down during “If I Knew” to serenade an audience member, but avoided the cliché of bringing her up on stage by throwing one-liners at her from the stage. They kept things clean and classy, even during risqué show closer “Gorilla,” which was accented by big bursts of pyro but otherwise wouldn't have been out of place on a '70s variety show.

The evening peaked during an encore of “Locked Out of Heaven,” Mars’ most stratospheric single to date. As the song climbed, Mars and his bandmates bounced up and down on the stage and the crowd followed suit in their seats. Mars literally had the place jumpin’ — not bad for his first time in town. Prince, James Brown and Michael Jackson would be proud.

Add a comment...

AUBURN HILLS — Shortly before Bruno Mars took the stage Thursday night, July 11, at The Palace, video screen emcee Napeson Hyman III advised fans to "prepare your mind" for the multiplatinum pop star.

Their bodies were what really needed to be ready, however.

Mars and his eight-piece band kept the nearly sold-out Palace crowd up on its feet and dancing for the bulk of the 90-minute Moonshine Jungle Tour show, a smartly executed, enormously entertaining, genre-hopping trip that both incorporated and deflated the typical conventions of pop extravaganza. Mars, looking (and even acting) alarmingly like Michael Jackson circa "Off The Wall," was every bit the star of the show, but he kept the music on equal footing with crack performances of songs from both his albums as well as a selection of appropriate covers.

The key was that for all the pomp — pyrotechnics, confetti, prepared footage on a massive rear-stage video screen and exuberant gang choreography — Mars and company were genially self-deprecating, enjoying the scale of the production without taking it too seriously. It was polished, but not to the point where it was more shine than substance. The guy — exchanging his red Dolce & Gabbana suit for a more modest short-sleeve gold lame print — didn't even change outfits once, in fact, which probably violates some cardinal rule of pop mega-stardom.

And as he wooed a specific female fan during "If I Knew," Mars playfully pointed to himself on the video screen by way of introduction, his wide grin letting everybody know that he knew exactly how silly the whole schtick was.

There was no trifling with the music, however, as Mars and the band — including Detroit guitarist Phredley Brown and a three-piece horn section — powered through the 16 songs with tight ensemble chemistry, from the majestic pop of "Moonshine" to the dramatic build of "Gorilla" and hitting rock ("Natalie," "Runaway Baby"), reggae ("Show Me," funk ("Treasure") and gospel-flavored doo-wop ("If I Knew") in between. Mars, who played guitar on several songs and drums at the start of the encore, segued Barrett Strong's Motown hit "Money (That's What I Want)" into Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" (which Mars sang on in 2010) also covered Ginuwine's "Pony" and B.o.B.'s "Nothin' On You."

An emotive "When I Was Your Man," meanwhile, stripped things down to just Mars and a couple of keyboards, while "Grenade" and "Locked Out of Heaven" were both arranged as a powerhouse opuses filled with dynamic ebbs and flows. It was certainly a treat for the body — and for the mind — but fans' ears were the greatest beneficiary of this night's Mars landing.

Bruno Mars sizzles for sellout Palace crowd in first Detroit visit

Bruno Mars nodded to the ’60s, saluted the ’70s, summoned the ’80s, and laid down one of the best pop shows of 2013.

With buoyant charisma to go with the infectious smile, the fedora-topped Mars made the most of his first-ever Detroit date, whirling and working his elastic tenor for a sellout crowd of about 15,000 at the Palace on Thursday night.

This may be his inaugural arena headlining tour, but the 27-year-old Hawaiian comes with a lifetime of performing polish, and he left it all over the stage. It’s tempting to draw the easy comparisons when it comes to his vivacious live show — James Brown and late Motown choreographer Cholly Atkins would surely approve — but Mars stamped it all with his own affable identity.

If you’re a fan of pop music’s classic vintage — the kind with live instruments, super-sized melodies, rich harmonies and showmanship to spare — Thursday was your kind of night.

That’s not to say this was some old-fashioned retro affair, even with the giant disco ball overhead and a visual vibe that occasionally evoked an old episode of “Solid Gold”: While there were plenty of musical gestures to the past, the show was hot, crisp and very much of the moment, with that most crucial pop trait of them all: immediacy.

The 90-minute show was a good-natured affair. Mars exudes genuine star power but without the preening narcissism that seems to go hand in hand with it these days. Even when he was admonishing his audience (“Put your camera phones away and dance with us”), Mars was all charm and high spirits.

His brothers-in-arms came via his eight-man band the Hooligans — horns included — with six of the guys mobile up front, vamping and dancing with Mars to make it a kind of loose-limbed ensemble show. Flanking Mars for most of the show was Lathrup Village-bred Phredley Brown, the band’s guitarist and musical director.

Often sporting a guitar, Mars pulled from his two albums of earwormy songs, serving up a tight Motown cover (“Money [That’s What I Want]”), doing a medley of hit R&B ballads, and crafting his own graceful rendition of his B.o.B. duet, “Nothin’ on You.”

“Treasure” got an upbeat ’80s groove, “Runaway Baby” a classic rock riff. “If I Knew” was a highlight, with its two-part harmony and slinky organ, and “Grenade” was nearly as potent as its name, amid a sublimely designed light show. “Nothin’ On You” was a showcase for Mars’ limber falsetto, and “Locked Out of Heaven” was an aptly exhilarating encore number, gold confetti and all.

Throughout the night, Mars and company hit some important balances: earnest but not hokey, suggestive but not salacious, smooth but not too slick.

Still, there’s room for growth. For all the spectacle, the show occasionally felt too rehearsed, tiptoeing up to the edge of explosive without quite giving in to full-on rapture. Some of the “casual” patter between songs likely rang familiar to any fan who’d already read a review or two, down to Mars’ crack about not tooting his own horn (“but beep!”).

It’s OK to set a higher bar for Bruno Mars. This is a performer who’s clearly got the chops to clear it — and it’s a good shot we’ll ultimately see him do just that.

Reviews of last nights show in Chicago, IL

Chicago Tribune:

Review: Bruno Mars makes it all look easy at United Center

By Joshua Klein, Special to the Tribune

Plenty of acts struggle for street cred. At a packed United Center Saturday night, Bruno Mars angled for sweet cred. "I should have bought you flowers and held your hand," he confessed in "When I Was Your Man." "I think I wanna marry you," he declared in "Marry You." "When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change," he sang in "Just the Way You Are," while half the crowd sang right along with him.

A self-styled throwback to a more innocent era, Mars and his formidably tight band spent much of Saturday's set doing what pop stars do best: making all that hard work look effortless. And make no mistake, a lot of effort went into the show, from the deceptively simple stage to the casual shifting from genre to genre to the way his band members roamed at will only to snap impressively into choreographed formation without missing a beat. Having already been crowned by the numbers on and sales charts, the night felt a little bit like a victory celebration, a party, a return to the days when performers promised the proverbial Greatest Show On Earth.

Or at least something just like it. For all his expert emulation, Mars is no Michael Jackson, James Brown or Prince. He is, however, exceedingly comfortable in his own skin, and his charisma shines like the light of so many spinning disco balls. If Bruno Mars did not exist, the music industry would want to invent him. A singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, producer, performer -- the total package -- Mars has had enough slight but often seriously catchy hits to sustain not just his career but an entire second tier of acts as well. While other acts hustle and flail, Mars merely smiles and surges ahead, the glint of his MIdas touch glittering through songs such as "Grenade," "Locked Out of Heaven" and "Billionaire."

"I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine, smiling next to Oprah and the Queen," Mars admitted in the last song, with a wink. And at this rate, you never know.

Chicago Sun-Times:

Bruno Mars delivers the hits with gusto

Updated: July 14, 2013 4:07PM

Party people of all ages descended upon the United Center Saturday evening, anticipating that Bruno Mars’ sweat-soaked extravaganza would transform the arena into Chicago’s biggest dance club. They weren’t wrong. Despite having only two full-length albums under his own name, the 27-year-old Hawaiian native held a deep arsenal of hits that kept the energy high and the people in motion.

The Hooligans, Mars’ cracking pop-soul band, was a throwback in the best way. With tight interplay and the ability to stop on a dime, the nine-piece group recalled the days when a smooth rhythm and blues combo was expected to play, sing and dance without missing a beat. James Brown would have been proud, even when Mars borrowed the Godfather of Soul’s lightning-quick Mashed Potato footwork during the red-hot riffing of “Runaway Baby.”

The Hooligans were equally proficient at rock, hip-hop, soul and reggae. Even silky doo-wop found its way into the mix, alongside the Motown beat of “If I Knew.” Mars himself uncorked a wicked Chuck Berry guitar solo during a cover of “Money (That’s What I Want).”

Song subjects ranged from the chaste romance of “Just the Way You Are” to the unrestrained libido of “Gorilla.” “Locked Out of Heaven” contained both, led by sharp guitar chords and a strong beat. At first, the song’s religious imagery suggested purity. “You could make a sinner change his ways,” sang Mars fervently, before dispensing with metaphors and making his carnal desires plain.

“Maybe, just maybe, you’ll put your camera phones down and dance with us,” said Mars with a grin, before commencing “Treasure.” The joyful song was reminiscent of Jamiroquai and “Off the Wall”-era Michael Jackson. Mars led his Hooligans in mesmerizing, synchronized steps.

“This was the hardest song for me to write,” said Mars, introducing “When I Was Your Man.” “To this day, it’s the hardest song for me to sing.” Lamenting a lost relationship, Mars’ tortured wail told all the things he’d do differently if only it weren’t too little, too late. Women cheered in thunderous approval.

Fueled by handclaps and soulful moans, the dramatic “Natalie” found Mars plotting cold revenge against a gold-digging woman who did him wrong. Mars poured his heart into “Grenade,” listing different ways he would make the ultimate sacrifice for love. “But you won’t do the same,” he sang, marking the wicked sting of the chorus.

Happier experiences with the ladies surfaced elsewhere. The roof-raising “Just the Way You Are” celebrated the entrancing qualities of Mars’ lady love. “If perfect’s what you’re looking for, then just stay the same,” he sang sweetly. The tender “Nothin’ On You” rang with every voice in the United Center, as faces sparkled under the twinkling lights of an oversized disco ball.

Mars’ stylistic diversity was a tremendous asset. Borrowing the name of his current album, Mars’ “unorthodox jukebox” provided a satisfying, one-act variety show. Although cannons fired and flames roared during the big finale, most of the fireworks came directly from the players and songs themselves.

NWI Times:

United Center becomes exuberant planet Mars for one night

The old adage of the entertainment "triple threat" surely applies to Bruno Mars but in even greater proportions.

The Atlantic recording artist, singer/songwriter can not only belt out the catchiest dance number and poignantly deliver a ballad but he's also a spitfire dancer and plays a mean guitar and drums.

Mars, with only two albums to his credit, is currently bringing his highly charged Moonshine Jungle Tour around the world and on Saturday landed his musical party at Chicago's United Center. He performed his 90-minute show to a full house. Fans in Mars' audience spanned the generations and cultures. From the sounds of the many screaming fans, Mars is also a heartthrob for the young set and a downright admirable all-around entertainer to older music fans.

The singer, whose recent album "Unorthodox Jukebox" took a spot in the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 when it was released, opened his show with "Moonshine" and then proceeded with the upbeat "Natalie."

Mars was in top form during his Chicago concert, never wavering in vocal ability or charisma. His show clearly had a retro-feel as he told fans he's a lover of Old School tunes. He infuses his performances with sleek and polished choreography and songs that definitely sound as though they've come from a different era.

When Mars takes his spot between his dancing band members and they all launch into smooth group moves, there's definitely a bit of a nod to Michael from J-Five days. But Mars' homage to pop and soul styles of yesteryear is in no way lackluster or trite. He's a performer with a fresh take on music and he's drawing fans in a big way these days.

Who would have thought the tiny tot performing as "Little Elvis" in 1994's comedy film "Honeymoon in Vegas" would be commanding quite an audience two decades later. (Mars, at 4 years old, was known as the youngest Elvis impersonator).

While the United Center concert saw Mars performing a number of songs from the latest album, he also delivered tunes from his debut CD "Doo-Wops & Hooligans." The first album brought Mars a number of hits while "Unorthodox Jukebox" is already turning out the chart toppers. It's likely almost all the songs from the latest album will get top radio play.

Highlighted tunes from Mars' concert were the magnetic "Treasure," (his latest radio hit); "Just the Way You Are;" "Marry You;" the reggae-inspired "Show Me;" "Young Girls;" "Money (That's What I Want)" and "Billionaire." Mars also gave a touching performance of "When I Was Your Man," which he said was the hardest song for him to sing and write.

His encore was the mega hit "Locked Out of Heaven" while "Gorilla" closed the show.

Opening for Mars was British singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding, who, unfortunately, appeared to be struggling through technical sound problems throughout her set.

Bruno

I have been fortunate enough to have been to plenty of concerts but Bruno Mars blew me away! SO entertaining, fun, beautiful, sexy, everything you could want in a concert. It felt personal and you could hear it in his voice that he was just having fun and doing what he loves. I would go to all lengths to see him when he returns to Chicago!

Amy's Fact Of The Day

Before Bruno “made it" in the music industry and was just starting out in Los Angeles aged 18, he had worked with Ne-Yo. Bruno sat in on his studio sessions to watch him work.

What artists did you work with while you were on your grind?

Bruno: “I actually worked with Ne-Yo. Before he took over the world. I was like 18, and he didn’t have any big songs out yet. He didn’t write that Mario song he had [“Let Me Love You”] yet. I just kinda sat in the studio and watched him write a song. It was just a huge learning experience because that was never a part of my forte. I’d never recorded like that before, so to see a guy sit down with a pen and paper, write a song, record it, it opened my eyes like, “Alright. I gotta step my game up and figure this side of the business out.” Because, in Hawaii, I was just known for performing." (2010)

Ne-Yo: “I worked with Bruno before my name was even Ne-Yo. To see him doing so well and come out with these big tunes for himself makes me proud." (2011)

ARTS BEAT: Phil Lawrence heads home to showcase solo CD and family ties in Victory concert

bmars-news:

Philip Lawrence isn’t stepping away from his skyrocketing career writing, recording and performing hit songs with pop star Bruno Mars, but the Evansville native is ready to step out onto center stage with a debut CD and a hometown concert.

The CD, “Letters I Never Sent,” features songs Lawrence wrote before his career with Mars and Ari Levine, who co-write as the Smeezingtons, took off with Bruno Mars’ “Doo Wops and Hooligans” album.

Lawrence will return to Evansville for a 7 p.m., Sept. 14 concert in The Victory, singing songs from “Letters I Never Sent,” as well as some of the hits he’s cowritten and recorded with Mars on “Doo Wops and Hooligans” and “Unorthodox Jukebox.”

“I just thought it was time for people to hear my voice,” Lawrence said recently. “Even if it was just for my family, I wanted to put this album together.”

Atlantic Records released his CD last month, just before Lawrence hit the road on the concert tour he’s performing on with Mars.

The Evansville performance will mark the first live show promoting the new album, Lawrence said. “Being able to perform there again is a bit of a full-circle moment for me.”

Lawrence will share The Victory bill with five talented relatives. DeVonna and Shane Lawrence, his sister and brother, will perform gospel songs from an upcoming CD with their uncle Tim Moore. And cousins Gina Moore and Joan Moore Mobley will perform as The Browne Sisters.

The Mission of Grace, a ministry of Grace and Peace Lutheran Church, where the Lawrences and Moores grew up singing, will present the show as a benefit for Mission of Grace.

Tickets, priced from $45 to $50, will go on sale Wednesday (Philip Lawrence’s birthday) at the Ford Center, Ticketmaster locations or by calling Grace and Peace Lutheran Church at 812-476-8201.

Old picture but I love his face here! lol

"In 10 years? I’m all about my live show. The reason why I’m doing this whole music thing is because my dream is to perform every night. That’s my passion. That’s what I grew up doing. The guys that I idolize, that’s what they do. I really take into consideration transforming the song and bringing them to life onstage. That’s when I have the most fun. That’s when I’m free. So hopefully 10 years from now, I’m still touring and I’m working on my tenth album."

Really cool blast from the past! A review of a live performance Bruno did in New York from way back in 2010, when he was starting to get famous. Its quite amazing to see him starting out almost 3 years ago and seeing how far he's come in such a short amount of time!

Reviews of last night's show in St. Paul, MN (July 14)

Bruno Mars concert review: Fun, fluid and fantastic

By Ross Raihala
rraihala@pioneerpress.com

POSTED: 07/14/2013 12:01:00 AM CDT | UPDATED: ABOUT 19 HOURS AGO

Just like his string of radio hits that bob and weave through multiple genres, pop star Bruno Mars cherry-picked the best bits from some of music's greatest entertainers to create a wildly enjoyable night of music Sunday at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center.

At one moment, the 27-year-old Honolulu native was leading his crackerjack band like James Brown, the next seducing the front row with the power of (a pre-Jehovah's Witness) Prince, the next spinning and squealing like Michael Jackson when he was still a "Thriller." The show may have lacked in originality, but Mars made up for that with sheer adrenaline, commanding the delirious sold-out crowd of more than 16,000 with the skill of a guy who has been doing this for decades.

The thing is, Mars is new to the arena business. On the back of his first album, "Doo-Wops and Hooligans," he headlined Roy Wilkins Auditorium in 2011. Now that his follow-up, "Unorthodox Jukebox," is also a hit, Mars has returned to town to play the big stage.

It was clear from Mars' very first single, 2010's "Just the Way You Are," that he was destined for big things. It's an instantly hummable, unabashedly romantic song that shares its title, and to some extent its theme, with the old Billy Joel hit. (Of course, it should be noted that for all the "you're beautiful inside" sentiment, Joel married Christie Brinkley and then Katie Lee, while Mars lives with bombshell model/actress Jessica Caban.)

But while that track, and his other big early smash "Grenade," both earned a warm response near the end of the set, it was the newer songs that really lit the place on fire, from the sly reggae number "Show Me" to the part-Police, part-Coldplay (but far better than that sounds) "Locked Out of Heaven" to the steamy show-closer "Gorilla."

Mars performed on a stage inspired by the disco era, complete with glittery confetti, laser lights and a giant mirror ball. But Mars and his band, the Hooligans, offered plenty of spectacle on their

own, dancing in unison, goofing off with the front row and looking as if they were having every bit as much fun as the audience, which ran the gamut from squealing tween girls to amorous middle-aged couples.

Ethereal Brit Ellie Goulding opened with a muscular, percussion-heavy set that peaked with her three big hits: "Anything Could Happen," "I Need Your Love" and "Lights."

One last note: For whatever reason, this month has seen several high-profile acts in town that have banned press photography from their local tour stops. It's understandable, I suppose, if you're an old crank like Bob Dylan or a noted control freak like Beyonce, but after such an exciting, colorful show, I was left scratching my head at why Mars' camp wouldn't allow his show to be professionally shot. He's a good-looking young guy on his first -- remember, first! -- arena tour, and one would think he would want to give his fans the chance to see a few images captured with something beyond a shaky iPhone.

Bruno Mars blends into his backup

  • Article by: JON BREAM , Star Tribune

  • Updated: July 15, 2013 - 8:05 AM

REVIEW: Vocally, he shined, and left ego at the door during show.

Bruno Mars must have left his ego in the recording studio.

Mars — the biggest broad-appeal male pop star since Justin Timberlake — is a gifted songwriter (“Nothing on You,” “Right Round,” “Wavin’ the Flag”), producer (“Forget You,” “Billionaire”) and recording artist (“Grenade,” “Just the Way You Are,” “When I Was Your Man”). But on Sunday night at sold-out Xcel Energy Center, it was often a question of “Where’s Bruno?”

Accompanied by seven musicians and one backup singer, Mars favored ensemble choreography (even though he can be a dazzling dancer), arty lighting that seldom put him in the spotlight and an unspectacular outfit (cougar-patterned shirt, black slacks and straw hat) that made him blend in with his casually dressed bandmates (in unmatching outfits).

This 90-minute show came across like a modern-day version of the Temptations-meet-Earth Wind & Fire. There were simply not enough star turns to make Mars seem like the superstar he deserves to be.

That’s too bad because Mars’ abundant skills were in evidence. His sweet croon seduced on “Nothing on You,” the hit he wrote for B.o.B., and his own “When I Was Your Man,” delivered with just voice and piano.

And nothing was more impressive vocally than “If I Knew,” which sounded like Otis Redding doing the Righteous Brothers with Mars masterfully providing both the soaring, silky tenor parts and the gritty, deep soul-gospel parts.

He showed off his drum chops on the introduction to the encore “Locked Out of Heaven” and his guitar prowess on a Santana-meets-Hendrix passage on “Grenade.” And he gave a taste — well, more of a tease — of his James Brown dance moves on “Runaway Baby.”

If all these references to stars of the past sound like too-much name-dropping, it’s because Mars, 27, has gone to school on old-school music. Having started as an Elvis impersonator at age 4 in his family’s show band in Hawaii, young Peter Hernandez studied tapes of Elvis, Brown, Prince and others in concert. Clearly influenced by Motown and especially Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, Mars knows how to keep lyrics uncomplicated, melodies hummable and hooks catchy.

Throw in his taste for pop, soul, reggae, rock, hip-hop and even doo-wop, and he has a formula for mass appeal radio hits (four different Twin Cities radio stations hung banners in the Xcel doorways; rarely do more than two stations get involved with a concert).

That explains why the Puerto Rican/Filipino singer drew one of the most diverse audiences at a big-time Twin Cities concert — Latinos, Asians, blacks and whites; young girls and their parents as well as teenagers, young adults and even baby boomers enjoying a date night.

The 16,000 fans certainly heard his voice and music loud and clear Sunday, but how often could they find the diminutive, multi-culti superstar on the too-busy stage?

Opening was British pop star Ellie Goulding, 26, whose dramatic dance-pop went over surprisingly well.

A set list & a few more thoughts about Bruno Mars at the X

Posted by: Jon Bream under Music

Updated: July 15, 2013 - 2:09 AM

A few more thoughts and questions about Bruno Mars’ show on Sunday at the sold-out Xcel Energy Center:

* Why did we need a 58-minute intermission? Doesn’t Bruno realize how many young girls (under 13) he attracts? Thirty minutes is sufficient.

* My concerns about lighting and staging were mentioned in my review. Did we really need loud explosions in the middle of two or three songs? Those detracted rather than added.

* Why doesn’t Mars allow photographers from major newspaper to photograph him in concert? Bob Dylan doesn’t allow it; but that has been his policy since the 1980s. Maybe he’s earned his curmudgeon-ness. Beyonce, like Prince, has banned newspaper photographers, as well, because she’s either vain or a control freak — or both. But Bruno? On his first arena tour? Moreover, the photos provided by his people didn’t even come close to matching the outfit he wore in St. Paul. Sad.

Here is the set list from Sunday:

Moonshine / Natalie/ Treasure/ Money >Billionaire/ Show Me/ Our First Time > Pony (Ginuwine)/ Marry You/ If I Knew/ Runaway Baby/ Nothin on You/ When I Was YOur Man/ Grenade/ Just the Way You Are ENCORE Locked Out of Heaven/ Gorilla

Some comments in response to the above review:

I have no idea what concert you were at last night - but the concert I saw was absolutely the best I have ever seen. I always knew where Bruno was on stage and he was perfectly backed up by his band!

cfrie87Jul. 15, 138:52 AM

i thought his band added to the concert. they seemed to be enjoying it was much as the crowd. it was good to see an artist that put on a good show and didn't mail it in.

stugelJul. 15, 139:25 AM

I gotta say I don't go in for this type of music, Mars or Timberlake, but for real both of these guys have every tool in the box and deserve all their success. Respect. Timberlake is the man on SNL and Bruno knocked it out of the park on his first try hosting as well. So what if he doesn't need to have his ego stroked, it means he's confident in who he is and what he can do. Props.

juels98Jul. 15, 139:47 AM

Good show. All the guys on the stage were very talented.

djjazzyjeffJul. 15, 1310:01 AM

You're not a good judge of concert character. Bruno brings alive the very niche in music we've been missing for a long time. He's real, he's entertaining, he is no way near trashy and doesn't need b's and hoes in his lyrics. He is a quality singer and performer. Blessed to make people wanna dance all night, to leave in their beds after his show, going wow I love him, I can't stop singing that song. He's refreshing and every bit worthy of an amazing review.

emblake000Jul. 15, 1311:10 AM

First, I disagree with the article in that I thought there were plenty of moments where we recognized that it was "Bruno Mars's" show. Did you miss the section where he sang while standing on a raised platform? Or the parts where it was clearly Bruno addressing the audience? Plus, I think that the parts where he showcased ensemble were fantastic anyway. Especially as someone from MN, do you really think a huge ego is a desirable thing? We have plenty of Divas already, why would I want more? He clearly recognizes that it's not all about him, and the sense of humility that I picked up last night was welcome. I recognized that he (and his band) are extremely talented without him having to be over the top in my face about it. As one of the other commentators already mentioned, that concert really was one of the best ever.

lakneeJul. 15, 135:31 PM

ARRey sez: Cute little guy, isn't he.
