Fans thought Mars was out of this world

PITTSBURGH -- Bruno Mars was more interested in playing guitar than dancing Tuesday.

Turns out he's a pretty good guitarist, as he proved at Consol Energy Center with brief but flashy solo runs on hits like "Marry You" and "Grenade."

Of course, skillful guitarists aren't nearly as rare a breed as guys who can bust dance moves like Michael Jackson and James Brown, as Mars also did during "Runaway Baby" about 10 songs into his performance.

I'd have liked to see more of his electrifying dance moves, though if Mars' intent in Pittsburgh was to establish himself as a versatile artist, he succeeded.

And if making teenage girls scream with excitement was another of his goals, well, he can consider that mission accomplished, too.

From the drop of the curtain decorated in the theme of his "Moonlight Jungle" tour, the 27-year-old Hawaii native enthralled a young and mostly female audience with a fast paced set that mixed pop, rock, R&B (modern and old-school) and even reggae with the song "Show Me."

Mars' eight-man backing band -- like him, all dressed in black -- whipped through an opening trio of "Moonshine," "Natalie" and "Treasure," before Mars grabbed an electric guitar and powered them through Barrett Strong's 1960 hit -- and later the Beatles' -- "Money (That's What I Want)." Mars dropped to his knees while grinding on his guitar, as the song segued smoothly into "Billionaire," his 2010 smash collaboration with Travie McCoy, with a verse of Aloe Blacc's same-year single "I Need a Dollar."

During the "Billionaire" part of that medley, the band spun around in perfect unison -- one of a number of instances when they threw in a choreographed stage move, which they always managed to convey as well-timed and tasteful. No boy band excesses here. Think more like how Amy Winehouse's bandmates used to spin around with her.

Mars participated in most of those choreographed sequences. His penny loafers -- chic designer brand, no doubt -- seemed to magically glide across the stage during "Moonshine."

And with the band rocking out on "Runaway Bride," Mars did a Michael Jackson-like slide, then a James Brown shuffle, stopping in a straight line with the band as they all did a toe-tapping move in perfect precision as gold lights flickered all over the stage, followed by a brief, smoky blast of pyro.

Ah, now that was the stuff.

But then Mars picked up an acoustic guitar, and slowed the tempo for "Nothin' on You," his Grammy-nominated collaboration with B.o.B. Female fans shrieked with delight, as Mars crooned about all the beautiful girls in the world, none of whom weren't tempting enough to lure him away from his true sweetie.

Fans squealed even louder during "When I Was Your Man," particularly when Mars got to that part about telling an ex-girlfriend he hopes her new beau buys her flowers like he should have done.

Mars' voice showed impressive range. There were times it called to mind Jackson.

"I got love for old-school music," he said to preface the vintage R&B-sounding "If I Knew," which he playfully instilled with an over-dramatic lip bite.

"That's what they used to do in those old songs, right?" Mars said. "I don't know why you bite your lip, but they always do that."

Needing to pick up the tempo again as the show neared its encore, Mars reached for his guitar and "Grenade." The horn section went full-throttle once more, as laser-ish lights, of a baby blue hue, scanned the crowd.

Mars pounded out a drum solo to launch the encore that began with "Locked Out of Heaven." Confetti cannons -- all the rage this year -- poured gold flecks on fans in the front rows, while fire shot out of a half-dozen tubes on followup song "Gorilla."

There wasn't a sense of spontaneity to the show. Mars said it was good to finally play Pittsburgh, though he didn't make mention that he was named after the city's "living legend" wrestler, Bruno Sammartino.

Though the fans that filled about 90 percent of Consol Energy Center's closed-end stage setup didn't seem to mind, especially when Mars flashed one of his big, beaming smiles.

English singer Ellie Goulding, 26, opened the concert, showcasing her expansive voice with its interesting shades of softness, rasp and a slight quiver. Several songs she sang while pounding on drums as she danced. Her best numbers combined synth-pop and thumping percussion, including "Figure 8," "I Need Your Love" and "Starry Eyed."

Severe Flooding Forces Carly Rae Jepsen and Bruno Mars To Cancel Canadian Show

The pair were scheduled to perform at the Calgary Stampede

Carly Rae Jepsen and Bruno Mars have been forced to cancel a forthcoming show in Canada following severe floods.

The pair were scheduled to attend a concert at Calgary's Saddledome Arena in conjunction with the yearly Calgary Stampede, but the show was scrapped when the city declared a state of emergency after heavy downpours caused significant damage to the surrounding area.

With the arena badly affected, a string of shows have been postponed while the clean-up operation begins in earnest.

Other stars confirmed for the event included the Dixie Chicks, Time McGraw and veteran rockers Kiss in what was going to be a series of shows to be held at the Stampede.

Speaking in the wake of last month's flood's, event organiser Vern Kimball insisted that drastic measures were necessary.

“We understand that this news is disappointing and we're disappointed too,” he said in a statement. “It became evident late (on Monday) to the Stampede and the (venue bosses) that the services necessary for an acceptable concert experience just weren't available given the current status and limitations of the building.

“Given the size of the four shows, and that they're all intended for indoor setup with tailored effects and lighting, there was no feasible alternative to host any one of these shows at another Calgary venue during Stampede.”

Reviews on the show last night at the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto:

Bruno Mars woos sold-out Molson Amphitheatre crowd

4

BY JANE STEVENSON ,QMI AGENCY

FIRST POSTED: THURSDAY, JULY 04, 2013 11:02 AM EDT

Multi-talented and super-smooth.

Those words come to mind to describe the slick pop-soul-R&B-funk dynamo that is Hawaiian-born Bruno Mars, who arrived at the Molson Amphitheatre on Wednesday night to play the first of two sold-out shows.

His so-called Moonshine Jungletour returns to the lakeside venue on Saturday night for a second stop.

With an eight-man band, including brother Eric on drums (which Bruno later played during the encore), and singer Philip Lawrence (part of his songwriting-production team the Smeezingtons), the 27-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist played material off his two albums - 2010’sDoo-Wops and Hooligans and its 2012 follow-up Unorthodox Jukebox - plus his hits with other artists - B.O.B.’s Nothin’ On Youand Travie McCoy’s Billionaire and a cover of Money (That’s What I Want).

Song highlights during the 95-minute set were what you might expect - the big hits like Marry You, When I Was Your Man,Grenade, Just the Way You Are, and Locked Out Of Heaven, but there was some surprises too including the disco-soakedTreasure complete with disco ball, the upbeat If I Knew andRunaway Baby, and the touching show-ender Gorilla.

Playing on a stripped-down stage featuring some large blinds and huge video screen, Mars delivered a briskly paced show as a tight-knit unit with his band, often performing choreographed dance moves alongside them old-school Motown style.

The only lame bit saw the band sweet-talking a woman in the front row that brought the proceedings grinding to a halt as Mars and other members took their best shot including Lawrence reciting “roses are red” poetry.

“Allow me to introduce myself,” said Mars. “I’m the dude on the ticket.”

Otherwise, there was plenty to recommend, including Mars’ soaring voice and dexterity on acoustic and electric guitar and drums, funky stage moves that borrow heavily from James Brown and Prince, and genuine confidence on stage.

He has been doing this since he was three years old, after all, initially as the youngest Elvis impersonator. (Maybe you remember his cameo in Honeymoon in Vegas?)

I also give him props for touring so soon after his mother’s unexpected death from a brain aneurysm in June of this year at the age of 55.

It sure can’t be easy.

Opening was appealing, husky-voiced British electro-pop star Ellie Goulding - internationally known for playing at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding reception - backed by a four-piece band as she took the audience through some of her better known songs like Anything Could Happen, I Need Your Love and Lights.

Bruno Mars packs the Amphitheatre with girls, girls, girls

Bruno Mars

Molson Amphitheatre, July 3

3 out of 4 stars

As a complete Bruno Mars tourist who’s never felt anything in any particular direction about anything the Honolulu-born hitmaker has foisted upon the world, I was happy on Wednesday night to settle into place on the Molson Amphitheatre lawn behind a three-strong posse of young, female adherents who’d reached the limits of their fanhood 30 minutes after the show’s appointed start time and were making no bones about it.

“I cannot hang out with this many children for this long,” fumed the clear leader of the pack, a tart-tongued lass maybe eight or nine years junior to my 38 with a stylishly clamped-to-the-temples mane of brunette curls and a slightly posh British accent. “If I was a rock star, this would be the worst. … Nothing but mothers and daughters. This is b-------.”

Sorry, ladies, it was that kind of gig: the 16,000-capacity Amphitheatre was uncomfortably stuffed right to the back fences last night, nearly three-quarters of it populated by daughters and hip-to-it mothers, mothers and hip-to-it grandmothers, super-hip-to-it, multi-generational combos of daughters, mothers and grandmothers and girls, girls, girls in general noticeably giddy at the prospect of first-hand encounters with such weapons-grade Bruno Mars lady-melters as “Marry You,” “When I Was Your Man” and “Just the Way You Are.”

The gig didn’t so much skew young as skew everywhere female. There were grey-haired grandmas perched in folding chairs, tarted-up teens and 20-somethings doing their best to appear nonchalant during the approach to “Treasure” and “Grenade” and drowsy-eyed ’tweens rousing themselves from their blankets and visibly shaking off the weariness of staying out past bedtime as “Locked Out of Heaven” finally rolled around toward the close of the evening.

They got a decent night out with Bruno, in any case. Mars — who returns to the Amphitheatre for a second gig on Saturday, July 6, after a short hop to Montreal’s Bell Centre on July 5 — and his eight-piece band delivered a polished, professional set that functioned much like a TV-show R&B revue, hitting all the appropriate, classicist soul-slingin’ marks with confident panache, if not a great deal of distinctive character.

It was the sort of performance one might expect from one of the stage-savvy artists — Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown et al. — that Mars’s admirably chameleonic repertoire so faithfully channels after their many years put in on the recording and touring trail in pursuit of the luxury of coasting.

The 27-year-old Mars, for his part, has arrived on the scene at a time when we’re so desperate for superstars that he’s been allowed the privilege of coasting through the obvious like an old pro after just a couple of albums, 2010’s Doo-Wops and Hooligans and last year’s Unorthodox Jukebox, and a handful of singles perfectly in tune with Grammy Awards-approved establishment tastes. He’s good at what he does and he can rock a decent Chuck Berry impersonation on the guitar when needed, but it remains to be seen if he’s got what it takes to keep the ladies interested over the long haul.

Another review for the Newark, NJ concert

Mars’ Moonshine Jungle Tour reigns in New Jersey

By MSN Music Staff Wed 3:48 PM

NEWARK, N. J. -- With hurricane season well underway in the Mid-Atlantic region, New Jersey experienced its first bout of torrential rains on Monday (July 1). The storm cleared by the evening but left puddles -- large ones, filled by the feet of eager fans who stood outside of Newark's Prudential Center anxiously awaiting Bruno Mars' third sold-out show thus far on the North American leg of his Moonshine Jungle Tour.

The lines wrapped around the venue (nicknamed "The Pru") at four different entrances. The crowd was a healthy mix of adults and adolescents, the former undoubtedly due to Mars' flair for nostalgia, as he's been compared to earlier greats like Frankie Lymon and Lionel Richie. The latter demographic is the heart of Mars' fan base, enamored with the Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and producer's string of soulful pop hits since emerging on the scene as a solo artist with 2010's "Doo-Wops & Hooligans."

Rising star Ellie Goulding warmed up the crowd, playing a selection of hits from her two albums, "Lights" and "Halcyon." The U.K. native delivered her electronic-tinged take on soul-pop, whizzing through a selection of her songs, including the commercial darling "Anything Could Happen," the Calvin Harris summer buzz track "I Need Your Love," and her chart-topping breakout single, "Lights." Goulding was met with roars from the crowd, but after her 45-minute set, it was down to Mars.

A large palm tree-accented tapestry hung before the stage in anticipation of the Honolulu native's performance. Thunderous congas announced his arrival, coupled with animal noises and flashing lights. Finally Bruno arrived, clad in a red suit with a leopard print shirt and gold chain. His entire backing band wore the same outfit, dancing in unison as if they were a '60s group on their revival tour. Mars opened with the apropos "Moonshine" (off 2012's "Unorthodox Jukebox") and led into "Natalie," before addressing the crowd as he introduced "Treasure."

"It's hard to dance when you're filming the show," Mars playfully shouted, urging his audience to hide their smartphones in exchange for an unplugged evening of fun. He and his eight-piece band ushered the crowd through a string of his hits, with a few covers, including '90s boy band Soul IV Real's hit "Candy Rain," Ginuwine's "Pony," and Ghost Town DJ's booty bass cult classic "My Boo." Mars' vocals were flawless, even during moments of accelerated dancing. With the light shining on his silhouette, he eerily resembled Michael Jackson during his heyday, even sounding like him and dancing like him from time to time.

Still, Mars was and is his own star, harnessing his charismatic power to delve into sonic intimacy on the sensual "Our First Time" while channeling doo-wop on "If I Knew," along with bringing boyish charm to "Runaway Baby," shout-singing through a gold megaphone. On "Marry You," Mars sang to an audience member, challenging his bandmates to woo her -- the winner being singing hype man (and fellow Smeezingtons producer) Phil Lawrence.

The evening took a somber turn as Mars sang the rarely performed "When I Was Your Man," explaining to the crowd that this was going to be hard for him. Having lost his mother to a brain aneurysm a month prior, singing about the regrets of time definitely took a brief emotional toll on Mars, who exited the stage for a moment following the song. He re-emerged shortly after, with the colossal "Grenade" in tow, closing the show with "Just the Way You Are," which he affectionately dedicated to all of New Jersey.

To kick off the encores, the multi-instrumentalist Bruno opened with a riveting drum solo, as the rest of his band reappeared and Mars' brother, Eric Hernandez, returned to his station at the drums. The crew blasted through the chart-topping "Locked Out of Heaven," as a computerized ape announced the arrival of the final song of the evening, "Gorilla."

Bruno Mars is truly a showman, and his sold-out performance is proof of his impressive reach within such a short amount of time in the spotlight. While a handful of moments throughout the evening felt a little too borrowed from days past, Bruno Mars got the job done. One thing is for certain: A stint in Vegas is definitely in Mars' distant future.

And another review on the Pittsburgh, PA concert:

Bruno Mars BRINGS IT to Pittsburgh

Consol Energy Center, Pittsburgh, PA July 2, 2013

Reviewed by Michael Rampa

Although he is technically a pop star, Bruno Mars is a throwback artist in every way. He starts on time, he wears a suit and his guitar is actually plugged in. The Filipino/Puerto Rican’s Pittsburgh debut was held at Consol Energy Center. Devoid of hockey since the Penguin’s early round exit, the arena was packed as if it were a Cup finals game. When the gold-laced palm tree curtain dropped on the “Moonshine Jungle”, Mars got the crowd instantly on their feet and singing along to an assault of the power packed hits “Moonshine,” “Natalie” and “Treasure.”

They never sat back down. The infectious energy of the band was matched only by the pyrotechnics. Although labeled as pop, Mars is classically influenced and the band’s sound is more reminiscent of funk. The heavy bass and infectious grooves resurrect the sound’s 1970s heyday. There is also an old-school R&B montage that includes Soul For Real’s “Candy Rain” and Ginuwine’s ”Pony”;

There may be more to the retro material than he artist’s fondness for it. Mars knows how to market himself. His demographic captures teeny boppers with Bieber like tenacity. More importantly, the older material, squeaky clean image and raw talent win over the parents with the pocketbooks.

Mars also knows how to work the ladies. He serenaded a lucky one from the stage during “Just The Way you Are.” It was fun but gimmicky and ate up too much time.

It has been said that the most successful artists surround themselves with people who are as good as they are. Mars’ difficult dance moves are signature. But the fleet-footed band was never outshone and remained in lock step all night. Indeed, it was difficult to decide who to look at. The star shared the stage as much as he played the front man role.

As if he needed to excite the crowd further, he said, “What up, Pittsburgh? What’s good? We waited a long time to play for y’all.” “Our job is to get y’all moving, get y’all shaking, but you can’t really do that with your camera phones in your hand, can you?”

After 80 minutes, he snuck quietly onstage behind a drum set and began the encore with a frenetic solo that morphed into “Locked Out Of Heaven” and “Gorilla.”
When the house lights finally came on the crowd looked as exhausted as the artist. To use a sports analogy, he didn’t leave anything on the field.

Brit Ellie Goulding opened up for 45 minutes with her bizarre art rock and dissonant sound system. Nonetheless, she has a legion of devoted fans that were treated to “Lights” and “Anything Can Happen.”

BRUNO MARS SHATTERS THE BAR WITH MOONSHINE JUNGLE WORLD TOUR

July 4th, 2013

In life, it’s a good rule to assume that if something looks easy and effortless, countless hours of work went into it. In the case of Bruno Mars, his talent has been years in the making. Starting off at the age of 5 in his family band in Hawaii, Mars has moved through the ranks of the music industry, working first as a producer with his team The Smeezingtons and finally, taking his rightful place in music history as one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

On night one of his two date stop in Toronto for the Moonshine Jungle World Tour, Mars and his eight person band personified the polish and pizzazz of a show that has seldom been seen on stage since the days of Motown. With choreographed dance moves and musical arrangements of songs from Mars’ first two discs, the hour and half show flew by, with Mars and his band mates never missing a note or step.

Showing his respect for his fellow musicians, Mars spent most of the concert in line with his back up singers and horn section, letting his perfected blend of showmanship and raw talent act as his single spotlight. Known for his versatility in his sound, the musical arrangement for Moonshine Jungle flowed through all the genres of Bruno, from pop to R ‘n B to Motown, with dance hall and rock and roll sprinkled throughout.

Playing all his singles as well as a number of tracks from Unorthodox Jukebox, including Natalie, Show Me, If I Knew, Young Girls and Gorilla, Mars has put together a show that can be enjoyed by both the casual and die hard fans. As if there was ever a question of his strength as a musician, Mars showed off his skills on both the guitar and drums, but left the piano playing to his band for songs like Young Girls and When I Was Your Man.

While comparisons of pop stars to the King of Pop get thrown around without much backing, Mars is one of the first artists in the history of pop that deserves the inclusion of his name alongside the late Michael Jackson. A star that often goes underrated, Mars’ Moonshine Jungle World Tour is one for the books.

Bruno Mars is a champ in his Pittsburgh debut

July 2, 2013 10:56 pm

Share with others:

As soon as we heard him sing the hook on "Billionaire," it was like, "Wait. Who's THAT?" We knew the guy could sing. But who would have laid down money that three years later, Bruno Mars would be headlining Consol Energy Center, let alone packing it?

Two albums and a whole slew of hits later, that's what he did Tuesday night on his Moonshine Jungle Tour.

Mars might not be Prince (who is?), but the 27-year-old Filipino/Puerto Rican star from Honolulu is on the track and has similar ambitions to inject new life into the ghosts of "Soul Train," right down to the line dances.

When the elegant black curtain with the gold palms dropped, he hit the stage in a black suit and leopard top and immediately took his place in a front line with four of his singers/musicians -- clearly more interested in blending in than standing out.

The humble gesture is charming. For the next 90 minutes, though, he did it all. James Brown dance moves, Chuck Berry guitar riffs, Sam Cooke vocal chops, MJ vocal chops, even a drum solo!

Mars is genre non-specific, so he and his band, with three-piece horn section by his side, glided from the disco of "Moonshine" and "Treasure" to the reggae-pop of "Billionaire" to the old-school soul of "Candy Rain" and funk of "Runaway Baby." For starters.

Although he's new to the pop world, he's been performing since he was a kid and has classic tastes, which explains why he didn't rely on the typical awards-show type production. Other than the lights being more high-tech and the explosive finale, this wasn't far removed from a '70s show with the pure focus being the band's tight groove and his silky vocals. On "Marry Me" and "Young Girls," among others, he and the "Moonshine" band showed how they can break it down as well.

That's all he really needs to wow his fans. He reinforced that vibe, saying, "What up, Pittsburgh? What's good? We waited a long time to play for y'all," then adding, "Our job is to get y'all moving, get y'all shaking, but you can't really do that with your camera phones in your hand, can you?!"

Late in the set, when he rolled out "When I Was Your Man" and "Just the Way You Are," he raised the roof with a lovely girl choir of thousands before the band took it on home. In between, they set off "Grenade" as a rumbling rocker with his own stinging guitar solo.

He started the encore with a furious drum solo before stepping forward to hit the ridiculous highs of "Locked Out of Heaven" and down, dirty grind of "Gorilla," which finally prompted the blasts of pyro.

You could say unequivocally that in his Pittsburgh debut, Bruno, like the Sammartino he was nicknamed for, was nothing short of a champ.

Ellie Goulding was an interesting choice for the tour as she's almost like an accidental acquaintance to Top 40. The British artist, working in the tradition of a Sinead O'Connor, threw herself into dreamy, dramatic art-rock songs punctuated with primal percussion. She even had her own little kit set up in front of her, which she beat wildly as her blonde flew up and down.

She's not beholden to pop formula, but she can play that game, connecting with the fans on "Anything Can Happen," her Calvin Harris joint "I Need Your Love" and the flashy "Lights," which was a bit out of her (and virtually any human's) range live.

Sorry to get back to you so late! lol I see you are gone on Bruno, and, to answer your question, yes! I attended to Hooligans tour with my son... I went because I loved Janelle Monae's album at the time and I had never heard of Mayor Hawthorne or Bruno Mars... It was standing room only at the Bill Graham Center in San Francisco... When Mayer Hawthorne played the volume was perfect... I really liked his songs and I was impressed... Then when Janelle (my namesake) came on she was great! But they turned the sound system up too high for that small venue (I was right next to the speakers on the left side)... Some of her songs were drowned out by too much bass... Then Bruno Mars came on and I didn't know who the hell he was but I noticed that the venue was suddenly packed by screaming teenage girls AND boys... and their wincing parents who took them to the concert... So, not knowing this young man, I listened as best I could to his music...and I found him very talented...reminded me of a young, fresh-faced MJ... Bruno danced, played guitar, and also sang some songs that were beyond the saccharine teen pops songs...which I really enjoyed... I told my son, in his early twenties, this guy has a lot of talent and he will go far...if he can get beyond the screaming teen fans... Apparently, he did! biggrin

Bruno Mars is a champ in his Pittsburgh debut

Review of Friday night's concert (July 5, 2013):

Concert review: Bruno Mars at the Bell Centre; July 5, 2013

Judging by the way Bruno Mars told a sold-out house of almost 19,000 on Friday that “we cannot wait to get you dancing,” one would guess the smooth operator says as much in every city. And judging by the utter jubilation Mars and his white-hot eight-piece band brought to the Bell Centre stage for their first Montreal visit, he probably means it every night.

Mars’s ecstatic 95-minute set was that rarest of arena shows: a concert that is surely plotted to the nth degree, and yet elevated by a feeling of liberation. From the players’ dexterous moves to the extreme charisma of Mars’s band breakdowns, just about everything was exactly right, but the performance rarely came off as calculated. The musicians were revelling as much as the audience in the joy of immaculate pop/soul/R&B/whatever else Mars feels like doing.

The Michael Jackson comparison remains valid live – those vocals are less homage than they are reanimation – but James Brown would be a more comprehensive reference point. From the outset, this was old-school entertainment – the art of putting on a show, not of staring at your shoes, with Mars and band making the choreography look both effortless and precise.

It took a few songs to fully absorb the stunning stage – hard angles, multiple levels, bathed in a whirlwind of lights and Technicolor projections. But despite all the accoutrements, the strongest initial impression may have been made by the astonishingly muscular brass trio in the opening Moonshine. The toys mattered, but the music mattered more.

Natalie’s walloping rhythm was fiery enough without a distracting barrage of flames rushing across the screens. The visual overload was toned down from then on, although the towering retro soul of Treasure was accompanied by the cartoonishly huge disco ball it deserved.

Obligatory hat on at all times, Mars was a model of laid-back charisma. He exuded bulletproof confidence without lapsing into egotism, even when he reached “the part of the show where I gotta find a girl and hit her with my best line.” The cheeky band-member competition for the heart of Emma in the front row led to a win by exuberant hype man Philip Lawrence (one of Mars’s partners in the Smeezingtons production team), which led in turn to the breathless Runaway Baby via fireworks and an artful segue.

They were all artful, really. As an impossibly tight Money (That’s What I Want) uncoiled into a breezy Billionaire, which begat the convincing island sway of Show Me, one was reminded that Mars’s production work took off before his solo career. For someone who’s been criticized as hopping all over the place, he displayed a keen focus in his pacing, helped by musicians who maintained a soulful through line. Even the transitions that should have been jarring worked: with a deft touch, the band wove Show Me’s sun-drenched vibes into the night moves of the bedroom number Our First Time.

Mars’s slippery vocals were as seductive there as they were broken-hearted in the lovers’ lament When I Was Your Man – “the hardest song for me to ever write,” and a necessary breather in a set with no filler. Its churchly organ broke long enough for Mars to goose the crowd (not for the first time), cannily tilting his hat to cover his face and waiting for the applause to reach the fever pitch necessary for the climax of Grenade and Just the Way You Are. In a display of the band’s ability to hit all the right beats, musical and choreographic, Lawrence and the brass players – not needed instrumentally or, for the most part, vocally – spent most of the latter number celebrating among their colleagues without seeming the least bit extraneous.

The mandatory encore of Locked Out of Heaven was ushered in with Mars drumming along to its defining yip-yip yip yip sample and ushered out with an explosion of glittering confetti. Following that with the more measured Gorilla – a triumphant closer for anyone else – seemed like a rare miscalculation, until Mars ascended to a riser, illuminated like the star he is, and vanished from view amid a wash of green lighting and a prolonged pyro shower. His musicians played on without him, long after proving themselves worthy of sharing a stage with someone destined to be a king of pop for years, probably decades. Seeing Mars’s permanent grin on Friday, he’ll be eternally grateful for the crown.

The bass that dominated the mix for Mars’s performance came close to rendering Ellie Goulding inaudible in her support set. The British singer’s crystal coo started to come out of the murk as she loosened up and pogoed to the infectious Anything Could Happen. Before that, her introspection was somewhat at odds with her surroundings, and with the icy bliss of her ever so slightly off-kilter synth-pop. If she plays to the wide open spaces, the carnival joy of I Need Your Love will translate beautifully at Osheaga next month.

Pics from the July 6th concert at the Molson Canadian Amphitheater (Toronto)

I see that they have been wearing more casual clothes the last few performances in Canada. I wonder if they will continue with that for the rest of the tour or if they will go back to wearing the red or black suits again hmmm

Another winning review cool

You May Not Like Bruno Mars' Music, But the Dude is a Helluva Performer

I love an artist that shows up on the scene with an angle. They start us out thinking one thing, while they’ve really got something completely different up their sleeve. They’re playing the field giving the market what it wants, maybe even needs at the time, and all the while they’re waiting on bated breath for the moment when our interests have peaked, numbers have been crunched, and they can finally reveal what they really came here to do. Bruno Mars is definitely one of those artists, and he proved that to the city of Toronto once and for all Wednesday night when his Moonshine Jungle Tour made a stop here at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre.

By now most people know that Mars grew up performing with his family’s band, The Love Notes, and that even as a child he was a well-known Elvis impersonator around the island of Oahu. Having been exposed to a wide variety of artists at such a young age, Mars spent years performing songs by everyone from The Isley Brothers and The Temptations to Michael Jackson and Little Richard – artists that had a major impact on his future sound and performance style. But, what’s so fantastic about a guy like Bruno Mars is that not only does his music have roots, most of his core audience has no idea what they’re looking at.

For a guy like Mars it’s not about doing what’s been done before, it’s about writing and performing songs that are as good as the ones he grew up listening to. Not only does he embody all the characteristics that made early Pop, Rock and Roll, Motown and Soul so exciting the first time around, he knows how to present it in a way that makes sense to a whole new generation.

When things first started heating up in the early 50’s, music was about charisma, jive, and breakin’ loose with no excuse just cause it felt good inside. It was a new and exciting time, things were frenzied, people we’re hungry and the music was alive with sex and possibility. Yeah, sex and possibility. That’s what made Elvis Presley’s pelvic thrusting so dangerous in the eyes of parents across America. Nobody wanted their pristine teenage daughter falling defenselessly for some greased up punk’s uncontrollable hips. Aw no.

These days we’re a little more forth coming about sex in the media, which is why Wednesday night’s performance was no problem at all. From his rendition of Genuine’s “My Pony” to just about every one of his own songs, Mars had proverbial panties dropping left and right. He was up there slow grinding his mic stand, hittin’ every beat, and humbly shovin’ his dick in the air while every guy’s girlfriend stood there imaging herself as the woman in his arms, in his bed, in his songs. Then, he dropped into “Marry You” – I don’t know, could all 5 foot 4 inches of this guy possibly appeal more to the female psyche?

When it comes to capturing the attention of the female demographic, Mars is just as great a force as any of those who came before him. His throw back style is a natural fit, and even watching him do renditions of other people’s songs only added to the shows’ grandeur. His band, which included a fully stacked horn section, didn’t waste a single moment standing in the background. They were right upfront with him, choreographed dance moves and all, giving his live show that classic Motown feel.

Even if you can’t be bothered with his music or you’re just a little to cool to admit it, you absolutely cannot deny this guy’s ability as an all around entertainer. Mars is an incredible songwriter, a well-rounded musician (don’t knock him if you ain’t never seen this guy rock), and an absolute showman. A Bruno Mars concert is about the all-encompassing performance, and that’s what makes a guy like this stand out.

He did a bang up job on the encore, leaving the crowd on a high note with “Locked Out Of Heaven” and another fan favourite from his latest album Unorthodox Jukebox, “Gorilla.” The show came to a close just as any perfect song would, and the audience gave Mars the kind of applause he deserved.

That's what got me:
When I first saw him on awards shows, I could tell that I would enjoy seeing him live, and he didn't disappoint me. nod
