Another rave review of last night's concert in Vancouver! dancing jig

Bruno Mars ascends in Vancouver

Robert Collins, CTV British Columbia
Published Sunday, July 21, 2013 12:29PM PDT
Last Updated Sunday, July 21, 2013 12:37PM PDT

“Welcome to the Moonshine Jungle Tour,” beamed Bruno Mars, two songs into his concert at a packed Rogers Arena in Vancouver last night. “We’re here to get you moving, shaking and sweating a little bit.”

The crowd needed little extra encouragement. Over those first two tracks, “Moonshine” and “Natalie,” Mars had them on their feet and in the palm of his hand, combining a hefty dose of swagger with the initial lessons in a nightlong pocket history of American music.

Michael Jackson, naturally, along with classic Motown and Atlantic soul, were the obvious and explicit influences. But as the tracks mounted up so did the nods to the past; Mars channelling Earth, Wind and Fire disco funk in “Treasure,” ripping out a Chuck Berry guitar solo during a cover of the Motown/Beatles hit “Money,” dropping Genuwine and R Kelly hooks into “Show Me” and unashamedly busting out James Brown moves for chunks of “Runaway Baby.”

It’s that combination of old and relatively new that’s created a uniquely broad pop demographic, grandparents, grandchildren and plenty of 20-something ladies all happily singing along. But it’s pure showmanship that’s taken Bruno Mars to the highest realm of pop royalty. His band was in inspired form, matching effortless musicianship with an obvious love for the songs and their performance.

Mars was happy to share the limelight, as the three-man horn section, guitarist, bassist and backing vocalist would regularly hop into formation to perform some vintage Temptations-style choreography. It definitely wasn’t the slickest dancing that’s been seen on the Rogers Arena stage this year, but it’ll probably be the most joyful.

The further Mars dug into the past, the more he appeared to enjoy himself.

“I’m in love with old school music,” he confessed by way of introduction to “If I Knew,” a track that concluded with a genuinely funny tongue-in-cheek group flirtation; the horn section and backing vocalist Philip Lawrence all taking turns to try their best lines on a lucky young lady called Jennifer. Mars was happy to take a back seat and enjoy the spectacle.

“I’m so lonely on the road,” he sighed unconvincingly. “I just need to talk to someone.”

When the moment came to switch from comedy to tragedy, Mars made the transition effortlessly.

“This was the hardest song for me to write and it’s the hardest song for me to sing,” he insisted, before launching into “When I Was Your Man,” a definitely fan favourite, judging by the sea of cell phones that emerged to document the moment.

Bruno Mars’ music may be focused on matters female, but it didn’t mean he was neglecting the fellas.

“If you’re here tonight with that special lady,” he explained during a breakdown in “Nothin’ On You”, “look her in the eye and say…damn!”

The inevitable finale of “Just the Way You Are” prompted mass outbreaks of sing-alongs and make-out sessions. Proof to the positive that Bruno Mars is more than a great entertainer. He’s a great wingman too.

Breaking with tradition by following the ridiculous with the sublime, the encore began with Mars cracking out a blistering drum solo on a rising podium – yet another skill he’s absolutely fabulous at. The explosive encore finished with “Locked out of Heaven” and “Gorilla,” Mars ending the show back atop the podium, high above his band, soaring at the top of his vocal range while fountains of sparks flew around him.

The homage to Michael Jackson was unmistakable and entirely justified. Mars has taken the best of the late pop giant (songs dripping with ideas and hooks) while elegantly dismissing the downsides (the complete disconnect with reality).

The new King of Pop has been crowned. The next time Bruno Mars arrives in Vancouver he’ll be playing BC Place.

Comments like Bruno Mars being the next MJ make me cringe. Please, there is only one MJ and there is only one Bruno Mars. Although I can see the similarities between them both, Bruno is not the second coming of MJ! mad He's not interested in taking Michael's place, he just wants to do what he loves and make his own unique impact on the world.

nod Same. I was just starting to get interested in him when I saw this skit, which made me check out some of the other skits, which caused me to look for and watch the entire episode. lol My respect for him as an artist and entertainer really went up after seeing him host and perform on SNL--this episode is definitely one of the catalysts that started me on my fandom.

Ellie Goulding: Bruno Mars is sexy

Ellie Goulding
says Bruno Mars is "romantic" and has "swag".

The British singer is currently supporting the popstar on the North America leg of The Moonshine Jungle Tour.

Bruno is known for sultry love songs such as Locked out of Heaven and Just the Way You Are and Ellie claims his personality matches his suave exterior.

"He's got swag, he's very cool; he's very romantic," she gushed to Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O.

"Myself and my friend Lauren, we just keep describing it as sexual. It's just very sexual.

"[Would I go there?] Um... I don't know what to say! I'll think about it, definitely."

Ellie, 26, is currently believed to be in a relationship with UK actor Jeremy Irvine, but was coy when asked about her beau.

In the past she has been linked to One Direction star Niall Horan thanks to flirtatious Twitter messages, but Ellie insists she is just pals with the 20-year-old singer.

"Um, he's just a good friend, you know! He's lovely, lovely," she said.

Today it was announced Britain's Duchess of Cambridge has gone into labour with her first child with husband Prince William.

Ellie sang at the royal couple's wedding in 2011 and revealed she's "excited" about the impending new arrival.

"That's probably the best moment of my life, actually," she recalled when asked about the pair approaching her to perform.

"It came about because they are big fans. They were very sweet and said, 'Any chance you could do this?' and we were like, 'Um... yeah!' They stayed in touch for a bit, they sent me some lovely letters; they're just really, really nice people."

Bruno Mars Puts His Fans Center Stage With 'Treasure' Interactive

Singer launches a website that broadcasts fan footage shot using Instagram video.

Bruno Mars' interactive "Treasure" video

Photo: Instagram/ Atlantic/ OKFocus

Dancing in your bedroom used to be a private thing — done with a hairbrush and aplomb behind closed doors — but now, thanks to a new video project from Bruno Mars and his dancey jam "Treasure," your moves could go viral.

Mars released his retro-style video for "Treasure" in June, shot on VHS and imbued with '70s glam, and Monday (July 22), he's added another layer — or should we say "filter" — to the jam. NYC-based technology agency OKFocus created a website that integrates fan footage shot using Instagram's video function with the official video.

When fans visit TreasureDance.com they'll be presented with an old-fashioned-looking TV — a nod to the retro quality of the "Treasure" video — outfitted with a pair of knobs. When they click play, the official video will begin playing, interspersed with fan footage that has been hashtagged with #treasuredance. Users can click the knobs to skip around footage, as well as click on Instagram usernames to see those dancers' accounts.

"The site looks for videos posted with the hashtag #TreasureDance on Instagram, takes the newest 100 videos and places them in a random sequence alongside Bruno Mars's preexisting music video for Treasure,"OKFocus's Chief Technology Officer Jules LaPlace and Creative Director Ryder Ripps told MTV News, adding that the song's "tempo, temperament and general vibe" make it the perfect jam for the project.

This is the first such project to be created using Instagram's video functionality, which launched in June.

Bruno Mars lands in Vancouver

Bruno Mars’ one-night stand at Rogers Arena was a summer highlight.

There was a wide mix of ages and styles out on Saturday night to enjoy the sold-out show which also featured U.K. electro-pop star Ellie Goulding — a headliner on her own in any other setting — opening the gig.

Mars and crew put on an old school soul revue full of tight choreography and stellar musical chops in support of their latest album Unorthodox Jukebox.

The multitalented Mars is the consummate frontman. He picked up the guitar on a couple of songs, performed an extended drum solo on “Locked Out of Heaven” and led his nine-piece band through stop-on-a-dime dance routines in the highly entertaining show.

The crowd was up on their feet throughout the evening dancing and singing along with every song.

It’s still early days for the Moonshine Jungle Tour — prior to Vancouver they stopped in Edmonton at Rexall Place and after Rogers they got back on the bus for an I5 trip to Seattle’s Key Arena the next night.

Catching the tour in its early stages was a bonus for Mars fans — the band began the tour in June and plan to stay on the road through March of 2014. Everything was fresh and funky in Vancouver.

Single Review: “Treasure” by Bruno Mars

By Joseph R. Atilano

“Treasure” is the third single from ‘Unorthodox Jukebox.’ And it continues the 80′s retro-vibe from the last two previously released singles from Bruno Mars. That right there is continuity exhibited by Bruno Mars in keeping all the singles following one theme.

Bruno Mars is acknowledging artists synonymous with the 80′s in the likes of The Police, New Edition, Billy Joel, Earth, Wind And Fire, and Michael Jackson. These respected and iconic artists have, in one way or another, clearly inspired and influenced greatly Bruno Mars in his latest studio-release.

When it comes to the music video for “Treasure,” everything from the choreography, stage lighting, and so on, serve as a heartfelt ode to that era. Watching Bruno Mars and his crew wearing the classic shiny, red outfits dancing and synchronized to a funk-inspired beat can make anyone who lived through the 80′s reminisce about those times or, at the very least, respect what he has done. Visually, the music video is tricked out with set pieces such as a disco ball and vintage stage lights. Even the manner by which the instruments were set up in the background show the attention given to even the minutest of details and the small things do matter when it comes to making a music video.

Bruno Mars, in my opinion, has become one of the current mainstream artists who can almost perfectly and seamlessly get into a character–if you will–in any music video and portray it with the utmost sincerity. I would like to believe that it is his Filipino side to him that has shown that resilience to carry out a role with purpose.

What is the subject matter of “Treasure”? It is his declaration of love for his woman and making her feel that no one and nothing is above her and that she will always be the center of his attention.

Bruno Mars is not only a resilient artist but he is also proving to be one of the most versatile artists around as he was able to capture a moment of the 80′s without him looking like a parody of the said decade. Not everyone can pull this off without looking silly or appearing to be spoofing the 80′s (i.e. ”Last Friday Night” by Katy Perry). I hated that music video of hers! The way the music video utilized the cameo of Debbie Gibson, I found it disrespectful of everything artists like Debbie have accomplished in their careers. For the younger readers, Debbie Gibson was one of the very first American female teen pop-stars ever! Is that how you acknowledge or thank one of your predecessors who helped pave the way for pop music to become the dominant force it is now? Trust me when I say that 15 to 20 years hence, there will be a ton of things that can be spoofed about Katy Perry and that even won’t include her music yet.

Anyway, back to more substantial things and that is the single of Bruno Mars.

In “Treasure,” Bruno Mars doesn’t repeat the mistake of Katy Perry. The single and music video gives off a feeling to the listeners and viewers of his respect and acknowledgement of that decade. If he continues to keep up this pace– with all of his creative output mostly unfiltered and his artistry seemingly isn’t uncompromised or watered down–then, he might just become one of those select artists of today people would still be talking about in the future and would continue to be buying even his older albums. So, by all means, listen to this single and watch the music video.

Needless to say, Bruno Mars has delivered another solid single here! His winning streak continues and that makes him already ‘three for three’ in his singles that have become both a critical and commercial success from his second studio-release ‘Unorthodox Jukebox.’ Buy the album also!

Thumbs Up!

Bruno Mars thrills Key Arena crowd

July 22, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Posted by Gene Stout

Bruno Mars may have been the sexiest man in Seattle Sunday night.

In a 90-minute show at KeyArena, the handsome, Hawaiian-born pop star with the infectious grin and silky dance moves thrilled a capacity crowd with a hyperkinetic fusion of rock, pop, funk, R&B, soul, reggae, doo-wop and hip-hop. Dressed in slacks, shirt, vest and a sharp-looking fedora, Mars seemed to personify several generations of music icons, from Elvis Presley and James Brown to Prince and Michael Jackson.

The “Moonshine Jungle World Tour,” a trek of sold-out shows launched after the multiplatinum success of Mars’ 2012 sophomore album, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” is one of the summer’s hottest tours, drawing multigenerational audiences captivated by Mars’ sexy, sultry anthems — from the plaintive, regret-filled “When I Was Your Man” to the explicit “Gorilla.”

Mars was introduced to the audience via video by the curious emcee and YouTube sensation Sir Napeson Hyman III who looked like a shriveled apple-head doll.

Mars and his good-natured, seven-piece band, the Hooligans (featuring several horn players), exploded into action at 9 p.m., blending songs from “Unorthodox Jukebox” and Mars’ debut album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” as well as a few carefully selected cover songs.

The lavish production featured two giant video screens, blinding pyrotechnics and surreal, eye-popping graphics that brought Disney-like visuals to the musical extravaganza. And in addition to his soulful crooning, Mars demonstrated his talents as a guitarist and drummer.

Growing up in his family’s Honolulu-based band, which featured Mars (at age 4) as a pint-size Elvis Presley impersonator, the 27-year-old singer and musician understands the value of being a solid entertainer. Mars played to the crowd, appealing to fans of several generations, from preteens to middle-aged adults.

Mars’ family band background has also influenced his repertoire — a real-life “unorthodox jukebox.” He is both modern and retro, a compelling combination that makes him musically irresistible to those who grew up loving a variety of musical styles from different eras.

The set featured “Money Make Her Smile,” “Billionaire,” “Marry You,” “Runaway Baby,” Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” and B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You.” The funky and muscular “Treasure” was one of several songs featuring a giant mirrored disco ball.

Mars flirted with a female fan, as surely he does in every city, and demonstrated the seductive power of the word “damn” when carefully inserted into a sentence.

Mars closed his show with a double encore featuring a confetti-strewn, horn-laden “Locked Out of Heaven” and an explosive, pyro-enhanced “Gorilla.”

Opening Mars’ concert was buoyant English singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding, who performed such songs as “Anything Could Happen,” “I Need Your Love” and the dance-pop hit “Lights,” the title song of her 2011 debut album.

Bruno Mars Is More Than Your Average Pop Star

Party music isn't usually meant to change the world. It's for relaxing and getting a little bit wild; it inspires kissing and booty-shaking and high-fiving, not marches up the Washington Mall. The chart-topping good time guy Bruno Mars, whose dedication to fun comes second only to his respect for those who've gotten the joint jumpin' in the past, would probably agree that his songs aren't about to start any major social movements. And yet, after seeing Mars play in Seattle on Sunday, I think he's offering an antidote — albeit a sweetly ephemeral one — to this summer of current events-inspired malaise.

Mars has released two sparkling albums full of radio friendly pop, 2010's Doo-Wops and Hooligans and last year's Unorthodox Jukebox. You can't escape the sound of his voice or his sensibility, but though he's dismissed by many as a mere song-crafter, Mars is actually the moment's most valuable pop historian. In his songs we see the whole history of melodic music you can dance to, from Tin Pan Alley to his beloved early-'60s pop to that '80s moment when new wave and R&B collided. His sound is also wonderfully international, interspersing reggae and Latin influences with the swagger of hip-hop.

Even the name of Mars' show: the Moonshine Jungle Tour — is risky in the most playful way. He's acknowledging that the music he loves is rooted in exoticizing and stereotyping people who look like him. But Mars asserts his own humanity by stressing his skills and grace as a musician. Instead of the almost musical theater-like atmosphere of most current arena tours, this one focuses on the basic unit of post-midcentury pop: the band. As Mars and his mates bust synchronized moves and admire each others playing, their delight is our delight.

It's just that old thing that art occasionally offers: a glimpse of a better world, or at least a happier one. Lately I've been struggling to cope with all the complicated and painful news that's come our way; maybe you have, too. The verdict in the Trayvon Martin case has led to many crucial but painful conversations about race. The bankruptcy of Detroit — the city where so much great popmusic has been made — inspires worries about the state of urban America and the growing distance between our rich and our poor. Recent events in the Texas House of Representatives highlight how deep our political divisions have become. For an average citizen, this is a lot to deal with.

This summer's most-heard songs encourage listeners to put all these concerns aside and try to get lucky, blurring lines and cruising down the pleasure highway until they just can't stop. Pop's mood is hedonistic and seemingly oblivious to consequence. Mars's own stake in the Top 10 is "Treasure," a feather-light '80s throwback whose tone is set by its computer-voiced opening line: "Baby squirrel, you'se a sexy m-f-er."

The power to move the soul through the feet is what Mars and his good-natured band tap into on the Moonshine Jungle Tour. Plenty of disco-fabulous lighting effects gleaming against a backdrop that looks like the front grille of a classic Cadillac let the crowd know that this is an arena show, intended to dazzle. Unlike many headliners, however, Mars roots his spectacle in the act of generating a groove. As other reviews have noted, Mars doesn't set himself apart from his eight-piece band: he dresses like them, dances in sync with their steps, and lets them enjoy significant moments in the spotlight. (This is how Mars records, too; he's the face of an equal-partners writing and production team, the Smeezingtons, and fellow Smeez Philip Lawrence is his main foil as well as his background singer.) Every band member takes a turn during the show's centerpiece, a lengthy battle of the Casanovas for the affections of a lucky female fan. In Seattle, Mars arguably didn't even win that contest — Lawrence was way smoother.

This emphasis on camaraderie onstage affected the atmosphere in the whole arena. I've been to plenty of big shows where everybody joined in the revelry, but this might have been the first one where I saw no impropriety, no disregard for others' feelings, no unwarranted aggression. As I danced, the woman behind me smilingly encouraged me to put down my pocketbook and shake my hips; the guy next to me grinned brightly as he swayed around the backpack he'd placed on the floor. A family a few rows away, including a pint-sized brother and sister in their Sunday best, took selfies and waved their hands in the air. Across the aisle, another guy lost himself in an unselfconscious shimmy. Even the guards watching the entrance to the floor sang along as Mars punctuated his own hits with quick versions of Ciara's "Body Party" and R. Kelly's "Ignition."

My own nine-year old daughter sang along heartily to the Mars hits she knew best, but made a face when she recognized he was talking about sex. Her dad noted that this was the first concert we'd all attended together by an artist we'd all discovered at the same time. Since hearing his lithe tenor guesting on B.o.B's hit "Nothin' on You," my husband and I have admired the almost sneaky ambition of Mars and his team, who clearly see themselves as 21st century Lieber and Stollers. Though his material is often explicitly racy, Bruno Mars is a family-style pop star because — like a century's worth of master manipulators of the double entendre — he grasps the connection between grown-up thrills and childish giggles. Think of Mars' first idol, Elvis Presley, slyly winking and shaking his hips. In today's hyper-sexual pop world, such innuendo is so gentle that it charms the parents and doesn't scare their kids.

Mars's fans, incidentally, were as diverse as it gets: Asian, African-American, Latino and white. Mars himself is half Puerto-Rican and half-Filipino, and his band is mostly African-American. In Seattle, a city being redefined as much by middle-class immigrants as by overpaid tech-heads, Mars's crowd felt like the future. And being in that room, joining in the dance, allowed me to imagine the America I want to live in every day: tolerant, aware, kind.

I wouldn't make too much of this feeling — it's the kind of thing that overtakes many crowds in the midst of simultaneous enjoyment — but what makes Mars's show special is that the music itself provides a basis for believing in love and grace across the lines of identity. It's often been said that Mars's songs are derivative; he borrows heavily from throughout the history of black pop from gospel to hip-hop, and as he himself said in concert, he named his first album Doo Wops & Hooligans because he's "in love with old school music." Instead of feeling stale, however, in concert Mars's traditionalist tendencies reminded us that popular music has been the main symbolic meeting ground for people who otherwise might not have ever left their own neighborhoods.

Mars's show wasn't absolutely perfect, even as a fantasy of an open-hearted world. For one thing, he could use a woman in that band to counter the testosterone, which is heavy, no matter how smooth. And as he becomes a better musician, able to lead a large ensemble into the kind of deep funkiness that provides not just sensual enjoyment but deeper revelation, Mars may find himself wanting to tackle some harder subjects head on. That's what happened with many of his idols, from Sly Stone to Jimi Hendrix to Carlos Santana to George Clinton.

Party music, it turns out, can become pretty serious. Writing about Stevie Wonder's decision to boycott Florida after the verdict in the Martin case, Jack Hamilton wrote that "you don't need to look far for evidence that this country values black American culture substantially more than it values the lives of black American people." It's important to acknowledge that the same person ecstatically boogieing to "Locked Out of Heaven" may have locked her doors habitually upon seeing someone who looked like Mars, or his bandmates, in the arena parking lot. But I think it's also fair to hope that all of us who shouted along with one of his most-loved ballads of sweet romantic uplift were able to carry forward the message contained within the evening's grooves, and in that case, made explicit in its chorus. Look at each other, concertgoers. Thank Bruno Mars for helping each of us take the risk to believe this about each other: you're amazing, just the way you are.

Thanks for putting into words, so well, what I have been

thinking about this guy. I remember seeing that performance,

shown above, on The Voice, and I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face.

I remember saying to my husband “That’s DeBarge! That’s Tavares! That’s The Time! …

That’s mychildhood! It made me so happy to see that BANDS still exist that can play instruments,
sing, dance and entertain their butts off. Thanks Bruno for a trip back.

Thank you Shawy! hug It was incredible and I wholeheartedly agree with you that his show is the greatest concert of this summer hands down!
Online comment from a man who recently went to the Moonshine Jungle concert, his comment in response to the article I posted above:

We have his albums which I think are good but don't really get me. My wife wanted to go see him so I went prepared to leave at the end of the night saying, "Eh." But man, I would go see him and his band again at anytime. Fantastic show in way that you just don't see in an arena anymore. Ann's article pretty much nailed it for me; she's right that it was a real group thing despite it being Bruno Mars show. His band was killer and he sang is ass off. He's what Michael Jackson could have been had he been allowed to grow up on his own.

Still don't put his albums on, but like Ann, I VERY much look forward to seeing how he matures.

woot! Bruno wins over another non-fan!

Shawy, you are going to see his concert too right? When are you seeing him?
