My Top 10 August concerts: Bruno Mars, Monkees, Wagoneers, Maze, Heart, My Bloody Valentine, Keith Urban and more

By Mario Tarradell / Music Critic

4:26 pm on July 29, 2013 | Permalink

1. Bruno Mars: He may very well be our most critically and commercially respected pop-soul singer-songwriter of the moment. Well deserved. Bruno Mars, born in Honolulu, Hawaii of Puerto Rican and Filipino descent, creates music with nods to the rich R&B past and a keen eye on the multi-genre present. His songs simmer in funk and reggae rhythms, pop and soul melodies, even jazzy and bluesy vocalizations. Mars’ sophomore album, 2012′s Unorthodox Jukebox, is one of those criminally short records (less than 35 minutes) that leaves you wanting more. Smart guy. The Grammy Award winner knows that in today’s mass saturation world, when overkill can be achieved virtually overnight, you want to give fans just enough to keep them salivating for the next time. The current “Moonshine Jungle World Tour” should be a total blast. Mars has the firecracker band, the sturdy vocals, the arresting songs and the showmanship to boot. Opening the show will be England’s Ellie Goulding, perhaps best known in these parts for her 2011 hit “Lights” and this year’s “I Need Your Love,” her collaboration with Scotland’s Calvin Harris.

Please do not rip the audio. This is Bruno Mars performing to a sold-out crowd at the Staples Center 7/28/2013. Bruno Mars and his band of Hooligans take shots out of red cups, make a toast to the audience and go into a funky mashup of his song "Money Make Her Smile."

Here's what's in the mashup:
Sexy M.F. - Prince
Sex Machine - James Brown
Money Make Her Smile - Bruno Mars
All Gold Everything - Trinidad James

And not sure but maybe some
Average White Band - Pick Up The Pieces
Kool & The Gang

From Livemusictrax's blog:

Bruno Mars Performs Incredible Mashup At Staples Center

This past weekend we had the opportunity to attend Bruno Mars’ concert at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Oh what a treat that was.

Aside from his impeccable vocals, dancing, band, and personality, there was one particular performance that stood out. He did an incredible mashup of songs from the 70s to the present. Blending the old school with the new, executing it effortlessly with perfection. Mashing up songs he wrote himself with covers from other artists.

It started with those 4 words from Prince…"you sexy mutha fucka." Yes Bruno, that you are.

Then it quickly transitioned into James Brown’s “Sex Machine." Then came the song everyone has been waiting for him to perform during the tour …"Money Make Her Smile" lyrics performed against what seemed to be the “Sex Machine" instrumentals. What?!

Then throw in a little hint of Rick James’ “Super Freak" to compliment the lyrics that say “she’s a super freak" in “Money Make Her Smile."

Then he does the unthinkable …transitions into a rap song from today’s era backed by the 70s funk instrumentals. Trinidad James’ “All Gold Everything" never sounded funkier. If you’re not a true hip hop head it might have even gone unnoticed. Especially the horn section spitting bars from the song with a funk flare, “this ain’t for no f#@k ni#@a if you a real ni#@a then f#@k with me / this one for the hood ni#@as hipster bitches that shop at Lenox / dark skinned, light skinned, asian and white women / hypebeasts we know about don’t buy shoes unless they popular." The infusion of soul that he put into a rap song …genius.

Parts of the horn section were reminiscent of Average White Band’s “Pick Up The Pieces" mixed with some Kool & The Gang flavor. Regardless, this amazing mashup deserves praise for the sheer creativity and musicality.

Rocketing into Stardom

Bruno Mars embodies the true pop showman

The music world needed Bruno Mars like a garden needs seeds.

In an industry fed on samples, Auto-Tuning and lip-synching, Mars burst out of the L.A. studio scene as a fully formed all-around entertainer. The scion of a Honolulu music family was demonstrably blessed with a talent trifecta of multi-instrumental musicianship, physical awareness and a voice that is reminiscent of both the power of Michael Jackson’s youthful tenor and the more nuanced smoothness that Jackson developed by the time of Off the Wall. Good looks and an ear for pop hooks don’t hurt either, but Mars really shows what he’s made of on the concert stage.

While DJs have been elevated to an elite status in modern culture, Mars is a pure performer in the best show business tradition. He’s probably influenced a good percentage of his younger fans to go pick up a guitar or bug their parents for drums. Among charting artists, he’s at the forefront of blending organic instruments with contemporary production and unabashed appreciation for popular music of all kinds.

Already possessing a handful of No. 1s, Mars achieved the ultimate with the release of “Locked Out of Heaven” from his latest full-length, Unorthodox Jukebox. It’s inescapable, one of the soundtrack songs of 2013 that people will nostalgically associate with the era 20 years from now.

Mars’ genius for hooks and distinctive voice was apparent from the get-go, but his journey to stardom was decidedly around the way. As part of the production team the Smeezingtons, Mars contributed to Cee Lo’ Green’s 2010 hit “F*** You” and gained notoriety for his vocals by guesting on B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.” With pop music fans now familiar with his voice, he scored big with his debut Doo-Wops & Hooligans. The album garnered seven nominations at the 2011 Grammys and a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for Mars’ No. 1 hit “Just the Way You Are.”

Mars should be considered an inspiration for all Elvis impersonators. Mars’ father owned an Elvis Presley memorabilia store in Hawaii, and by age 4, Mars was curling his lip and gyrating in a jumpsuit. He was featured in the Nicolas Cage comedy Honeymoon in Vegas two years later, and although his taste evolved from the King to R. Kelly, his addiction to performing was constant.

With his songs providing the soundtrack to prime-time TV via Dancing with the Stars, Glee, So You Think You Can Dance and The X Factor, Mars practically has a built-in audience for his two-days-on/one-day-off Moonshine Jungle tour. Live reviews have been ecstatic, and sales pushed Unorthodox Jukebox to No. 1 on the album charts. Mars is all over the stage during his ’70s-inspired show, demonstrating skills on guitar and drums as well as the showmanship that comes from a lifetime immersion in music.

At 27, Bruno Mars has gone from imitating the King to being King, and there is no sign of his slowing down.

LOL x 10!

Here’s another memorable If I Knew/Pick Up Lines segment. This time Olivia is the lucky lady the Bruno picks for him and his guys to run their lines on, but Bruno scolds her recording, telling her to put her damn phone down or he’ll pick another girl! lol But the funniest part of this segment is when another lady fan throws her hot pink bra at Bruno! falloff Their reaction is too funny! lol lol lol

(Bruno singing) Runaway, runaway runaway…throw you bras and your panties on the stage!

falloff Great improv Bruno!

Mars isn’t just a student of pop music history, he’s a teacher’s pet, a brown-nosed apple polisher, the kind of kid who makes lesser classmates jealous.

Seriously, Chris Brown is probably trying to figure out a way to shove the guy into a locker at this very moment.

Bruno Mars' music helps boy recover from 30 surgeries

Posted: Aug 01, 2013 12:14 AM EDTUpdated: Aug 01, 2013 12:21 AM EDT

PHOENIX -

Pop superstar Bruno Mars will be taking the stage at US Airways Center at any moment. The arena is packed. Among them is a teen who says he's alive because of Bruno Mars's music.

This teen has survived 31 brain surgeries, and he also has a handful of life changing medical conditions.

His family says Bruno Mars' music has helped him recover and keep smiling.

These tickets are treasure to Michelle Campuzano and her son David.

"I watched him miss out on so much, he can't run and play the same games other kids play and there's been a lot of sacrifices we've had to make," says Michelle.

16-year-old David was born three months premature. He has hydrocephalus, bleeding in the brain, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and bronchular pulmonary dysplasia. Last month his respiratory problems nearly ended his life.

"When we got into the ER I noticed something right away he started seizing."

His seizure lasted two hours. His temperature topped 105 degrees.

"A doctor came in and just said, when I talk about it feels like it just happened, I'll never forget this, the doctor came in… he'd known us since David was born he put his hand on my shoulder.. ‘He's fought a good hard fight he's courageous he's amazing his smile inspires the world but he's not going to make it through this one,'" recalls Michelle.

Michelle didn't leave David's side, not even to shower. She just finished college while caring for David and refused to let her son pass away on the brink of their brighter life together.

"I was scared to leave him, so I would just play music and all of a sudden he was coming to and being awake-- but he wasn't really active. And Bruno Mars came on and he sat up and started doing the David bounce. Anybody who knows David knows the David bounce and he just started dancing in his hospital bed."

Within 24 hours of being taken off a respirator, David was dancing to Bruno Mars music.

"Cause we kind of needed something to hold onto. It was sleepless nights and crying and not knowing what was next. That gave us all something to hold onto, like he'll dance again."

Wednesday night, David will be dancing where 16-year-olds should -- at a concert, not a hospital.

"David almost dying has really taught me how to live, so all those things that are out of our control that we can't change, those don't matter anymore. So it's these moments that I live for these experiences to have with him."

Reviews of the July 31st show in Phoenix, AZ

Bruno Mars woos US Airways Center in Phoenix

The Republic | azcentral.comThu Aug 1, 2013 8:47 AM

It’s hard to believe that Bruno Mars, 27, is only three years and two albums into his career as a solo artist on a national scale. Because Mars? He’s got this pop-star act wrapped around his little finger.

It’s been over two years since his last roll through the Valley, when he teamed up with Janelle Monae for a show at Comerica Theatre. Well, a lot can happen in two years. A venue upgrade, for one, to US Airways Center, where on Wednesday, July 31, the seats were packed to the rafters with glow-stick-waving shriekers swooning to every proclamation of love.

Though Mars has always been a capable showman with a golden voice, some ineffable quality has snapped into place, transforming a preternaturally talented heartthrob into a bona fide superstar.

Of course, a flashier stage show doesn’t hurt.

Jungle sounds filled the darkened arena, wild animals snarling, it seemed, behind the ceiling-to-stage curtain emblazoned with a golden jungle scene. The curtain fell to reveal Mars and his musical entourage, the singer flanked on one side by horn players, and on the other by a bassist and guitarist, as they kicked off their set with a sexy, grooving “Moonshine.”

Mars looked relaxed cool, outfitted in a dark vest over a leopard-print shirt, dark slacks, gold chains and a pale Panama hat. “Welcome to the Moonshine Jungle Tour,” he said. We wanna see you all dancin’ and we wanna see you all sweatin’.” They danced, alright, albeit without the benefit of Mars and his bandmates’ killers moves (kudos to the trombone player — it ain’t easy to jam when you’re swinging that much brass).

The party really started when Mars launched into a simplified “Billionaire,” stripped (one might argue blessedly) of Travie McCoy’s raps. “Oh every time I close my eyes/ I see my name in shining lights” he sang, his clear voice aching with a desire that was perhaps more justified when it was recorded in 2009. Now if he wants to see his name in shining lights, all he has to do is open his eyes.

Mars got sultry for “Our First Time,” the night’s sexiest jam. And if a slow-burner about an initial sexual encounter weren’t spicy enough, Mars had to go and throw in a snippet of Ginuwine’s “Pony.” Of course, Mars is savvy enough to follow “Our First Time” with “Marry You” (how could he not want to after that first night?), a rollicking plea that played out like a proposal to every woman in the room.

And then, if pulses weren’t racing enough, Mars let “If I Knew” slow to a simmer while he addressed the crowd. “This is the part where I gotta find one girl and just talk to her,” he said, zeroing in on a girl in the front row on whom to lavish his affections for a few minutes. She looked predictably euphoric.

Mars closed out his regular set with two of his biggest hits. First came the dramatic, thundering plea of “Grenade,” dozens of piercing spotlights shooting into the crowd, converging at the climax into a column of light on Mars, followed by a comparatively joyful “Just the Way You Are.”

After a brief exit, Mars came back for the encore, beginning with a drum solo at an elevated set, rocking out on the skins and launching into “Locked Out of Heaven,” glittery gold confetti exploding over the audience. It was a pretty effect, a bit magical — and it was utterly devastated by Mars’ closing “Gorilla,” the singer prowling the stage like a jungle predator against a backdrop of shooting flames. Nothing caught fire that wasn’t supposed to, but Mars still burned that place to the ground.

Not to be forgotten, opener and emerging pop artist Ellie Goulding got the crowd pumped for the theatrics to follow. Her big, apocalyptic-pop sound was a titillating amuse-bouche. Her stripped-down stage and stripped down look — simple black tank top, black shorts and white boots, like Sporty Spice for a new millennium — was a nice contrast to throbbing tracks like “Burn” and “Lights.” Her set was so infectious, the crowd pumped and dancing like the venue was a nightclub and not an arena, that by the time she got to “Anything Could Happen,” you were willing to believe her.

Bruno Mars - US Airways Center - 7/31/13 (VIDEO)

Categories: Last Night
Bruno Mars
US Airways Center
July 31, 2013

It's so cool to see the American dream in action. Last night at US Airways Center, Bruno Mars played to a sold-out crowd at US Airways Center for his Moonshine Jungle Tour. About 20 years ago, he was a child performer in his dad's Hawaiian tribute band, playing a little Elvis. In this case, attendees who thought "That kid will be famous one day" were totally right. If only the audience could have heard him crystal clearly.

Like his previous Valley performances, Mars brought his performance entourage, including The Smeezingtons songwriting partner Philip Lawrence, to back him up. There were nine men on stage, all musicians, including a horn section and backup singers. I thought a set of sexy female backup dancers would have been dynamite for Mars, but like his past performances at Comerica Theatre and Martini Ranch, Mars focused on the vocals and the hip thrusts.

Oh, the hip thrusts -- there were plenty of them to keep the ladies in the audience squealing with delight.

Sadly, just like his opener Ellie Goulding, Mars' vocals were barely audible most of the time. The last portion of his show, where he powered through hits "When I Was Your Man," "Grenade" and "Just the Way You Are," showcased his vocals the most. For the remainder of the concert, though, it was hard to hear what Mars was singing, though the musicianship was top-notch.

I almost wished he was in a smaller venue, again; instead of what Mars was singing, there seemed to be more of a focus here on the interactions of the nine-person team dancing around on stage. If his vocals had just been turned up, the show would have been 10 times better.

There was surprisingly little spectacle to support Mars, other than the great encore "Gorilla," where green lights emitted from the stage, confetti continued falling from the previous song, "Locked Out of Heaven," and fireworks blasted from the stage. I wish the whole show had been like this.

For an arena show, while Mars and his team of performers were engaging on stage, I felt like the arena venue lent itself to a flashier set. Even those hottie lady dancers would have jazzed up the show. I thought, beyond Mars' intense vocal talent, the rest of it wasn't noteworthy. Despite a giant screen behind the performers, nothing much really happened beyond swaying around on the stage. Crowd banter was kept to a minimum, too.

Stranger still, Mars didn't even play piano. He did play electric guitar and drums, but he never sat down at the instrument so heavily featured in some of his biggest hits, such as "Just the Way You Are."

Like Lady Gaga, a Bruno Mars tour with just the man and a piano would be amazing. Please, Bruno--do it.

While the concert was short of spectacle, Mars sounded good when you could hear him. And his hip thrusting definitely make an impact.

Personal Bias: How can you not think Mars is adorable?
The Crowd: Mostly hot ladies in their 20s. The crowd was surprisingly diverse, though -- there were kids, boyfriends, moms -- just about any demographic loves Mars.
Overheard in the Crowd: "I'm so glad he played 'Marry Me!'"
Random Notebook Dump: My friend and I were really sad Mars didn't play "Young Girls." Also, while Goulding's performance was bare bones, consisting just of dancing and soft singing on her part, her tunes are really catchy and got the crowd out of their seats and moving.

HOW TO LOOK LIKE HUGH JACKMAN AND BRUNO MARS: CELEB STYLIST JASON SCHNEIDMAN SHARE HIS SECRETS

By: Abbey Stone

Celebrities don't just roll out of bed looking flawless; it takes a whole team of experts to primp and polish them to perfection. There are hairs to be tousled, brows to be tweezed, and skin to be moisturized before walking out the door each morning. And I'm talking about the dudes of Hollywood (whoever said men were more low maintenance than women was wrong, wrong, wrong).

Celebrity stylist and Dove Men+Care hair expert Jason Schneidman, the brains behind the beauty for some of the hottest guys in Tinseltown, including Hugh Jackman, Rob Lowe, Bruno Mars, and Jonah Hill, shares his tips and tricks for making A-list stars look their picture-perfect best with Hollywood.com.

"All of my guys like to look put together, but natural and not overdone," says Schneidman of his clients. "I always strive to ride that effortlessly cool line, and I find guys are drawn to me because I know how to work with their natural features and pull together a look that isn't over-styled."

For the summer, Schneidman's go-to hairstyle is "the classic 'do – think Steve McQueen and James Dean. This works great for all seasons because it is timeless and never goes out of style. In fact, my number one tip is to stay classic," he says. "For this look, I recommend rubbing a dime-size of paste into hands and then running through hair for hold. Since paste is moldable, you can add more throughout the day if your hair isn't staying put. That's also why I don’t recommend traditional hair sprays: it's difficult to reapply."

Schneidman gives us the low-down on how you (or the man in your life) can look like one of Hollywood's hottest.

BRUNO MARS

FameFlynet

"Since Bruno's hair is naturally curly, my secret is to not touch his hair after shampooing and letting it air dry naturally. If you touch his hair before it's completely dried, the curls get frizzy and defused and we have to re-wet it and let it dry again. I only begin to style it after it is totally dry, and I avoid all alcohol products since they can be drying for his hair. The best stuff products for him are cream or oil styling products since they also moisturize his hair."

Finally listened to the new Bruno Mars album in full--really like it! Bruno would have been popular in the 80s easily--he shows his diversity and skill on this album with more maturity on some songs--like I remember when I saw him on tour a couple of years ago--minus the screaming teens... biggrin

...And as much as I like Bruno, though, I played Prince at Montreux 2009 right after that...sorry, but as good as Bruno is, he ain't Prince. I still like his new album, though... smile

This time Olivia is the lucky lady the Bruno picks for him and his guys to run their lines on, but Bruno scolds her recording, telling her to put her damn phone down or he’ll pick another girl! lol But the funniest part of this segment is when another lady fan throws her hot pink bra at Bruno! falloff Their reaction is too funny! lol lol lol (Bruno singing) Runaway, runaway runaway…throw you bras and your panties on the stage! falloff Great improv Bruno! >Canayla72: OMG!!! THAT was hilarious! Phil's comments just had me rolling. I love how they all just lost it after a while.Bruno teling Olivia to put that damn camera down was PRICELESS! He's just so genuine. I love him!

He respects these artists and refers to them as two of the greatest entertainers ever. He has been influenced by both. His talent IS undeniable. The media is quick to crown a new succesor because we lost one of our greatest and Prince himself (although not slowing down yet) is getting older. Bruno Mars is THE only entertainer who has even half a pinky toe that could fill such big shoes. If you ever want a special treat attend just ONE of his concerts and you will see why he's being compared to the greatest. He's utterly amazing. He's grown considerably from his Doo-wop Hooligan days, his new style is mpre mature and attracts not just teeny-boppers, but fans ranging in their 20's -60's!!! It's that ol' school vibe that he brings that encourages his audiences everytime to put down their camera phones and just dance. It's like attending a real party like back in the day! These songs sung live take on a personality of their own AND Mars does what no other entertainer has done he leaves his fans on such a high that they actually experience "Post-Concert Depression" IT'S REAL. NOW THAT'S TALENT!

Review of last night's concert in Salt Lake City, UT (Aug. 2)

Bruno Mars concert a thrilling throwback

Concert » Show is wild, loud, indulgent — and audience adores it.

First Published Aug 02 2013 11:06 pm • Updated 2 hours ago

Bruno Mars embodies the Millenial zeitgeist: flashy, impossibly nostalgic, and sidestepping substance entirely. Friday night, his live show at the Maverick Center was a thrilling pastiche, a throwback and nothing more than a damn good time.

The audience adored it.

The show began with a serviceable opening set from LA-based Fitz and the Tantrums. The sound was a tad too muddy, but vocalist Noelle Scaggs was a fireball of energy as she shimmied around comparatively tired-seeming lead Michael Fitzpatrick.

About a half-hour later, Mars and his band took to a stage shrouded in a palm tree-embroidered curtain. It was the first of several times Mars toyed with kitsch — and at this point the concert hadn’t even begun.

The screams of Mars’ mostly young, mostly female fans became deafening seconds later when the curtain dropped to reveal a decidedly retro stage. Think "American Bandstand," or any of those other shows that were on before either I or, more significantly, Mars were born. Mars himself was dressed in a brown vest and a fedora, but not one of those narrow-brimmed, bro fedoras. This one was wide and wonderful, like something someone might wear while driving a Cadillac circa 1975. Or in a movie about someone in a Cadillac in 1975.

Mars opened with "Moonshine" from his recent album "Unorthodox Jukebox." The stage lit up, the band swayed and the audience swooned. While Mars crooned, a video of parrots played on the screens behind the stage because, why not, parrots are rad.

The moment was characteristic of the entire show, which valued stimulation more than anything else. It was juxtaposition for juxtaposition’s sake. Parrots, disco balls, and everything else seemed to need no more justification than coolness to make it on stage.

Which isn’t a criticism, though it will probably sound like one to most people outside of Mars’ predominantly Gen Y audience. It was neither serious nor silly. It was visually sensual, dimensionally cinematic. It was post-genre.

Mars followed with "Natalie" and "Treasure," during which delighted fans sang along for the first of many times.

Later highlights included "Billionaire," which the audience loved, and the more low key "When I was Your Man," which Mars described as his hardest song to sing.

My personal favorite, though, was "Grenade," which was appropriately explosive with rapid-fire lights pummeling Mars as he sweatily wailed.

The show was also surprisingly talky. During a particularly long "R&B" breakdown, Mars and his band members practiced pickup lines on an ecstatic young woman in the front row.

Mars also offered tips in good performance. If you’re ever on stage, he recommended, just say "damn." Mars demonstrated, the audience swooned.

Reaction to these moments probably splits along Mars partisan lines. Diehard fans seemed to love them. I felt they were a bit much and preferred just hearing Mars actually-quite-pleasant music. In any case, Mars did come across as a nice guy, which was probably the point.

The show wrapped up with the smash hit "Just the Way You Are," followed by a funk jam and, finally, an audience-demanded encore. The encore began with Mars playing a raucous drum solo. Soon, canons fired glitter into the air above the audience. Explosions and torches ripped through space behind the band.

It was wild, it was loud, it was indulgent. To ask, "what does it mean?" is to miss the point; meaning is so much less important than having fun.

Yetta catches up with Bruno Mars' band member, songwriter

by Yetta Gibson

PHOENIX, Arizona -- Bruno Mars took the stage to a packed house at US Airways Arena Wednesday night.

His music has topped the charts, with hits like “Billionaire,” “Nothing On You’ and his latest one, “Treasure.”

Not only is Mars an amazing singer and performer, but his power on stage is due mostly to the energy of his band. They are not just band members, they have catchy choreographed dance moves performed to every tune.

The members of Mars’ band are his family, friends, his right hand man, and song writer, Philip Lawrence.

I sat down with Lawrence in one of Mars’ fleet of luxury travel coaches, to discuss how they come up with some of those amazing lyrics.

Lawrence is part of The Smeezingtons, Mars’ songwriting team. Mars and Lawrence come up with the lyrics together.

They created the Smeezingtons in 2009, as both were looking for their big break. Together, they have not only produced and written songs for Mars, but for artists and groups such as the Sugababes, Travie McCoy, B.o.B, Brandy Norwood, K'naan, Lil Wayne, Flo Rida, Chad Hugo, Lil Eddie, Bad Meets Evil, Adam Lambert, and Cee Lo Green.

Lawrence is on tour with Bruno, but when they take a break in September, he will be making the rounds promoting his self titled solo project.

His first performance will be in his home state of Indiana.
