A troller joined the org expressly to defend Whitneys honour! I bet they would hold the needle for her.

Wow, I see that interest still remains high in Whitney and the lessors are still pressed! over 6k views and 275 replies, wow! Only an Icon/Legend could illicit sunch interests that even the haters can't stay away. Cue their entrance in 5,4,3,2,.......

Viva Whitney La Diva, Legend, Icon. Her status is and has been cemented in history. Pay no mind to the deranged, immature folks who reside at basement level and can't hold a mature conversation. Sad really.

Onto other news, it's alledged that she will be returning to the big screen to co-star in Terry McMillan's waiting to Exhale sequel, 'Getting to Happy'. Certainly looking forward to that as well as to Angela Bassett.

Can't wait!

FOR YOUR READING PLEASURE ON THE REMARKABLE STATS OF MS. WHITNEY ELIZABETH HOUSTON AND WHY SHE IS A LIVING LEGEND/ICON DESERVED TO HAVE HER NAME RIGHT ALONG MADONNA, MICHAEL AND PRINCE. ALL OF THIS ON FEWER CDS RELEASED AND THE MOST SUCESSFUL MOVIE CAREER OF ALL 3 AND THE BETTER ACTOR.

Whitney is the only artist to have 7 consecutive No. 1 singles at the US Hot 100, surpassing a record previously set by The Beatles and The Bee Gees

Whitney has an incredible 11 No. 1 singles in the US - beaten out only by Mariah Carey (18) and Madonna (12). Diana Ross has 12 No. 1s with the Supremes and a further 6 in her own name

With fourteen songs, Whitney holds the record for the most consecutive Top Ten singles on the chart

Whitney was the first solo female artist to have 3 number one singles from one album

Whitney is the only artist to claim three Top Ten hits from all of her studio albums (1980s and 1990s)

Whitney has the most number-one covers. She`s covered the songs "Saving All My Love For You", "Greatest Love Of All", "All The Man That I Need" and "I Will Always Love You"

Whitney is the first and only female artist to concurrently top the US, UK and Australian charts with a single song ("I Will Always Love You")

Whitney is the only artist to have charted from 1984 to 2009. Other artists such as Elvis Presley have had longer streaks, but not during this time

Whitney is one of only two female artists (the other being Mariah Carey) to have three albums sell over 9 million copies each in the U.S.: "Whitney Houston", "Whitney" and "The Bodyguard OST"

Whitney was the first female artist to have two diamond albums (as of January 1994, both "Whitney Houston" and "The Bodyguard OST" were over ten times platinum). To date, Whitney, Madonna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Shania Twain and The Dixie Chicks are the only female artists with multiple diamond albums

Whitney is the only artist with three albums to remain on top of the Top 200 for over ten weeks "Whitney Houston" (14 weeks), "Whitney" (11 weeks) and "The Bodyguard OST" (20 weeks)

Whitney`s albums have spent 50 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, more than any other female artist

Whitney has won 22 American Music Awards, more than any other female artist

Whitney won a record of 8 American Music Awards for "The Bodyguard OST" back in 1994. She is tied only with Michael Jackson, who won 8 AMA`s for "Thriller" at the 1984 ceremony

Whitney won a record of 11 Billboard Music Awards at the 1993 ceremony for "The Bodyguard OST"

Whitney is the only artist with at least one Grammy, Emmy, MTV Video Music Award, MTV Movie Award, People`s Choice Award and Billboard Music Award to their name

Whitney is the most covered artist on the TV Show American Idol with over 1.150 of 70.000 auditions being songs of hers during the show`s third season. The song "I Have Nothing" has been performed in the finals 6 times, more than any other song

Whitney Houston still has the highest ranking film debut by a music artist with her 1992 debut in "The Bodyguard", even ahead of Eminem`s debut, "8 Mile", despite "The Bodyguard" having opened & played in far fewer theatres and despite the inflationary factor that would increase Whitney`s lead

Whitney Houston is amongst the highest paid actresses in the world and is reported to have collected $10 million for her role in "The Preacher`s Wife"

The world`s best selling debut album by a female artist is "Whitney Houston" with over 25 million copies sold. (The record was broke in 1999 when ..."Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears was released with 27 million copies sold worldwide) The album also ranks as the number one best selling female album of the 1980s

The first album by a female to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 was 1987`s "Whitney"

"Whitney" (1987) has US sales of over 9 million, UK sales of over 2 million and total worldwide sales of over 19 million copies

Whitney`s version of "The Star Spangled Banner" is the only version to be certified platinum

Whitney holds the record for the highest one week-single sales by a female artist as 632.000 copies of "I Will Always Love You" were sold in the final week of December 1992

"I Will Always Love You" spend an amazing 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It remains one of the longest No. 1 singles ever

"I Will Always Love You" is the best-selling single by a female artist and the biggest-selling non-charity single of all-time

Total world sales of "I Will Always Love You" stand at 8 million copies, making it the second biggest selling commercial single in world music history - recently losing it`s title to "Candle In The Wind" (sales now at 30 million copies)

The second biggest selling single by a female artist in the UK is "I Will Always Love You", with UK sales of over 1.56 million copies - this record was recently broken by Cher`s "Believe"

"The Bodyguard OST" sold an amazing one million copies in the final week of 1992 - at the time, it set a record for the most albums sold in a single week. The title was broken in 1998 and again in 1999 but this was due to changes in the way the Billboard 200 was compiled adding extras days sales for Garth Brooks and Backstreet Boys. More recently, 'N Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem have followed in the million-plus league

The largest initial certification of any album in US sales history is "The Bodyguard OST" with 6 million copies sold in it`s first two months on sale

The biggest selling album in the world in the 1990`s is "The Bodyguard OST" and the second biggest selling album ever

"The Bodyguard OST" was the first pop album in Korea to sell a million copies

"The Bodyguard OST" is the best-selling album by a foreign female artist in Brazil

The Bodyguard movie (Warner Bros.) was the 5th biggest grossing film ever ($ 400 million, as at 1995)

"Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" was the third single ever to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the second single by a female artist

The longest running No. 2 (!) record in US chart history is "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" with 11 weeks in the runner up spot

Whitney has the longest stay at number one on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums Chart, when "The Preacher's Wife OST" remained at number one for 26 weeks

"The Preacher`s Wife OST" is the best-selling Gospel album of all-time with sales of over three million copies in the U.S. and 5 million copies worldwide

Interesting comments from Babyface on Whitney's contribution to the Waiting to Exhale Soundtrack which is considered one of the best movie soundtracks and certainly a classic in the urban community. Whitney not only co-produced it but single handedly picked every singer on the soundtrack. This went on to be certifified 7xp and give her a #1, a #8 and a top 30 single, all her 3 tracks charted.

Can't wait to see what the new 'Waiting to Exhale' soundtrack will sound like and who will be on it.

Whitney Houston
She's had 31 AC hits, including 10 No. 1s.

Producer/singer/songwriter Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds:

"Forest Whitaker gave me a call because he was directing [1995's] "Waiting to Exhale" and was interested in me scoring the film, as well as writing songs. Knowing it was a Whitney film, it was kind of expected that she'd sing, but it wasn't a guarantee. But she did have rights to decide who would be a part of the soundtrack. Everyone was chosen or agreed to by Whitney. I can't remember any of the names we crossed off-and I wouldn't say them anyway [laughs]. But I remember she really wanted to do something with CeCe [Winans]. That's how the song "Count on Me" happened.

"Whitney laughed when I handed her the "Shoop Shoop" song-because it was simple-but she loved it. The soundtrack ended up being a very special project. The more time goes by, the more important it becomes.

"Whitney had a soul about her voice that went beyond being black. It spoke to everyone, no matter what color.

"I wish I could say I produced [1992's] "I Will Always Love You" [produced by David Foster]. The first time I heard it, I was floored. We hadn't experienced anything like that before on the radio. I hate to call it pop music. It was just music that everyone loved."

As told to Gail Mitchell

With each post you reveal just how immature you are. I wonder if someone was having a discussion on Prince and the entire time they kept calling him a freak or faggot how that would make you feel when the discussion is MUSIC RELATED neutral

That STILL does not take away from her icon status... just shut the fuck up... ur posts are worthless LOL

Boo hoo.

You just can't accept someone elses point of view. You showed that on the thread mentioning MJ too. A lot of people think that Whitney is a not iconic, and threw her career away to drugs. You just can't accept people having that view.

Couple that with the fact that she was simply a singer who had hits with cover versions and it fairly easy to see why she is not held in as high regard as MJ or Madonna.

Thats what the thread asked, thats all I ever stated. You just don't like my language and you are throwing your toys out of the pram because of it.

Whitneys music is drug related whether you like it or not. Same goes for Jimi or Jim or Janis, Pete Doherty or Amy Winehouse. If people criticise Prince, I would hope it would be for something he had done that effected his career (like becoming a JW), and not his sexual orientation that had no bearing.

Whitney is not mentioned in the same breath because she is not respected. That isn't just my opinion. it seems to be the opinion of a lot of people.

So why did she lose respect? You could take the view of our little black power friend Entertainer and say it must be racism or sexism. But if she engaged her brain she would have realised that MJ is black and Madonna is female. So she is either dumb or trolling.

My view? As I've said all along, its because she is only and singer and wrecked her career with drugs.

Grow a set and answer the question in the thread. The orignial poster asked why Whitney is not held in as higher regard as MJ and Madge.

Is your answer really just going to be "She is!" and bury your head in the sand to the fact that she isn't in public and music circles?

[Edited 8/3/11 2:08am]

You do not know how to intelligently express your opinion without being disrespectful and saying things that have NOTHING to do with the arguement. Crack Whore etc and posting dumb pictures but you then expect for people to take your arguement seriously like its the gospel but yet you are ranting like a lunatic and obsessed hater.

Seriously, your only arguement is to call Whitney a crack whore, druggie etc etc... that has NOTHING to do with her what she HAS accomplished in the past and her past voice for the 500th millionth time BUT shit if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy to keep saying then go right ahead.

We have already agreed she is no MJ or Madonna. However, she has influenced alot of singers today and she does have a catalogue of classics whether you like it or not. She also is regarded as a vocalist Icon to some people whether you like it or not. So you bashing her doesnt change anything go have your fun but you look childish because your saying the same damn ignorant thing in circles lol

Are you even attempting to read what is being typed?

My post (yeahthat ) you are responding to clearly states my opinion (she does not have the same level of respect), does not disrespect (only accuses her of what she has admitted) and answers the thread topic head on (ie Why does she not get the same level of respect).

Yet your response rants and raves and STILL doesn't attempt to tackle the thread topic at hand. It seems you are simply hiding behind insults to avoid answering the very topic we are supposed to be discussing.

I think deep down you know fine well that her lack of musicianship and drugs is what gets her less respect, but you can't bring yourself to say it, so you keep avoiding it.

lol lol I can read just fine. Your to up your ass to understand others opinions. You seem to look at things in black and white and read what you want to read. Some of what you are saying I have already stated and even agreed with but you seem to think that takes away everything she has accomplished which is crazy. Your opinion as far as her level of impact being compared to Michael, Madonna, and Prince was stated already and I have never objected to that because it is true. She isnt on their level or will ever be Also, I have mentioned her drug problems and how it has affected her career. HOWEVER, I am not going to act oblivious to the impact she did make during her peak. I am also not going to sit her and constantly call her a crack whore and post irrelevant photos when that really has nothing to do with the overall point but if you get a rise out of poking fun at her when you are trying to have intelligently arguement about her MUSIC impact than go ahead.

I am the biggest MJ and Prince fan and I have never once stated she was anywhere on there level of talent or popularity but Jesus christ you are acting like the woman was a 15 minute no talent fad. Whitney was a great singer. I already agreed she fucked her career up with drugs BUT that STILL does not change the impact that she did make and that she has influenced singers today.

Whitney has always taken time between projects. I don't believe for a minute that WTE sequel will be the smash that it can be witouth all of the original actresses including Whitney. She is not in rehab. She is back home in Atlanta. she has completed her stint in rehab.

She just attended Prince Azrim's birthday party in the Uk last month along with Mariah Carey, usher, Hilary Swank, Joan Collins and others. Estimates are that she was paid a cool million to attend as she is friends with the family.

Angela Bassett, and most recently Forest Whitaker the director has said that she will be in it and Forest said, his plan is to have all of them back. The movie is currenly having the script worked on.http://www.zimbio.com/Ang...ey+Houston

and the clip of Angela saying in May that they are all coming back

http://innthebasement.com...gragation/

Yes, Clive said this and I'm glad he did. Smoking undoubtedly has done damage to her voice. If she can quit that, she should be able to recapture some of her range and lose the hoarsness that sometimes she has.

This is her last month at the Prince's party in the UK - scroll down a bit- she looks great

http://www.whitneyhouston.com/us/home

She looks pretty good.

For the better part of her career she has always taken time between projects. This movie is due to shoot top of the year 2012 if the script is finished. angela Bassett is commited in the broadway paly 'Mountaintop' through Jan 2012.

I think some of the problems on this site is because Whitney is bigger than Prince. I am a BIG Whitney fan but also a BIG Prince fan and will admit in a heartbeat that Prince made the better music. But, Whitney has spanked Prince's ass ever since she came on the scene. Mid-late 80's, Whitney was bigger, 90's Whitney was bigger. And even 2000-2009 Whitney was bigger (Prince 3.5 million, Whitney 5 million US only, but we all know she sold more worldwide too). Million Dollar Bill,II Learned From the Best, Could I have this Kiss Forever and I Look to You charted higher than "Musicology", "Call My Name" and Black Sweat". Whitney's name is also a bigger draw, hell she got the BET Lifetime Achievement Award before Prince, and look at the reaction she gets at award shows, she's been getting standing ovations just for walking out since the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Just face it, you may not like her music, but the name Whitney Houston is bigger than Prince and is very iconic. With all respects to the great Michael Jackson, now that he is no longer here, it is safe to say that Whitney is probably the most iconic living African American artist worldwide and even in the US. Sure there are more "legendary" singers like Aretha, Stevie. But as far as iconic, generates world wide interest, Whitney is #1. Janet and Prince are behind and you all can argue on who takes second place.

Since when does someone pay a "friend" a million bucks to attend their birthday party? This prince must be in desperate need of friends... rolleyes BTW smoking (CIGARETTES!) permanently damages the singing voice and it never sounds as good as before. I should know. mad

Whitney Houston's career is not Fucked up! If it truly was no one would care and she wouldn't be able to move jack shit. She has some issues but she is working on them. She is not sittign somewhere with not a clue as to what is going on with her life and career. Like I have said, Prince.org is a bubble. Doing that tour certainly hit her career but it's not over for her. Everyone who knows about vocals including Clive has said if she quits cigs, get some vocal coaching, her vocals will improve, not to the bodyguard levels but improve to around 2000 levels which still would slay alot of singers today.

Her cd did extremely, extremely well in the US and globally. I'm not going to rehash what it means to sell 1 mil records in the US or 2.5mil in the world .

She has went back to rehab voluntarily to continue to work on her issues which I say kudos to her. She has completed that. Her main issue besides keeping her sobriety which tons of hollywood type and artists struggle with, she is not the first and won't be the last and quitting cigs.

She still very much has a voice, it's damaged but it is still there that vocal coaching and quitting cigs will only enhance.

Recent pics of her shows a very vibrant Whitney. She seems to be the only hold out to 'Waiting to Exhale' sequel. I'd bet that she will be in the movie next year and that it will smash. I'd also say that she will have executive or co-executive producing credits on the soundtrack and that it will do well, at least Gold.

If these things occur, these are not the outcome of someone with an fucked up career. She is a recluse somewhat and very rarely goes out that is why there tends to be alot of speculation about her and she is least of all a media whore.

I dont think that she is as popular as Michael is right now but I do think that globally and domestically she is more popular than Prince. She is not as popular as madonna globablly or in the US but in the urban community, she definitely is.

You don't still have a $100mil recording contract if your career is fucked up. I'd bet if the label didn't still see a cash cow, they would have dropped her a long time ago but she makes money for them still, plain and simple.

Her cd' I look to you' released in 2009 Fall sold more than Mary j Blige, jennifer Hudson, Monica, Kelly Clarkson, every urban singer on J and Arista records besides Alicia Keys. sold more than Madonna's 'Celebration, R Kelly both cds, Chris Brown- both cds, 'Trey Songz- both cds, more than Maxwell, more than Mariah Carey 'Memoirs ', more than Barbra Streisand.

Again, it is too easy to check facts. She had a 2 #1 singles on the urban ac charts and #1 on the dance charts and 2 top 20 songs on the r&b/Hip-Hop billbaord charts. That doesn't occur to people careers who are fucked up.

She has some work to do to restore some of that lustre and she is doing it. I'm betting Exhale sequel will smash and the soundtrack will do well

I love Whitney to but I dont think so... thats an exaggeration.

She shouldnt even be mentioned in the likes of Stevie or Aretha who individually are MUCH MUCH more bigger draws than Whitney. They might not be pop stars but are much more bigger and legendary names. Dont get me wrong Whitney has a following and is an Icon but she damn sure aint no Aretha or Stevie lol sorry.

I think they are more legendary for sure. But I don't think they are bigger stars not on a worldwide level. Aretha and Stevie shows up to events all the time and it's not really a big deal. Whitney shows up to an event and it's on ET, Access Hollywood, TMZ the next day. Whitney on The View, Oprah etc would be a bigger ratings draw than the other two. I stand by what I say,Michael was the only black artist whose name was bigger than Whitney's and even he got upstaged by her once at his own event lol, Whitney's aneroxic butt, stole the headlines from him at his anniversary concert lol. There's a reason why she is still hounded by the paparazzi, even more now that Michael is gone, it's bc her name sells papers, for good and bad reasons, people are interested in her, point blank.

I don't disagree with alot of what you said. But you didn't say that earlier.

I've seen Whitney live and she was pretty good.

Maybe you think I'm too hard on her, but I don't view her as any more important that Britney or Janet. Multimillion selling artists, but not the whole package. And in the case of Whitney and Britney, I lost a lot of respect for them with their actions.

I think on this level we just have to agee to differ.

Since when does someone pay a "friend" a million bucks to attend their birthday party? This prince must be in desperate need of friends... rolleyes BTW smoking permanently damages the singing voice and it never sounds as good as before. I should know. mad

Suffice it to say it if you know anything about the Prince, you will know that he does this. MJ was paid millions to show up. He either pays his high profile guests or and gives them perks. She is friends with the Prince and his family and has been for years.

Regarding cigs, said her voice was damaged but there are many singers who once they stopped, got vocal coaching were able to mend their voice to a point that while never the same, enough improvements were had to still have a decent voice.

The Prince Who Blew Through Billions

vanityfair.com — Back home, the sultan erected a 1,788-room palace on 49 acres, “which is without equal in the world for offensive and ugly display,” in the words of one British magnate, and celebrated his 50th birthday with a blowout featuring a concert by Michael Jackson, who was reportedly paid $17 million, in a stadium built for the occasion. (When the sultan flew in Whitney Houston for a performance, he is rumored to have given her a blank check and instructed her to fill it in for what she thought she was worth: more than $7 million, it turned out.) The brothers routinely traveled with 100-member entourages and emptied entire inventories of stores such as Armani and Versace, buying 100 suits of the same color at a time. When they partied, they indulged in just about everything forbidden in a Muslim country. Afforded four wives by Islamic law, they left their multiple spouses and scores of children in their palaces while they allegedly sent emissaries to comb the globe for the sexiest women they could find in order to create a harem the likes of which the world had never known.

THE Sultan of Brunei’s son Prince Azim kept up his reputation for having star-studded birthdays.

For his 28th bash Eva Longoria, Whitney Houston, Usher, Hilary Swank, and Mariah Carey, as his guest of honour, were put up at his Stapleton Park stately home in Leicestershire.

There was a casino night followed by another party the next evening.

My mole tells me: “Organisers know how fond the Prince is of Whitney so made sure she had a room with the best views of the lambs in the field.”

But for Mariah it was the first time she travelled without her own little lambs – her tots Monroe and Moroccan.

A pal of the star said: “Mariah was delighted to be there – she is a close friend of Prince Azim

It would really help this thread imo if we managed to put both the argument of her commercial success and the story of her drug abuse to rest.

The original question is clear, and if you can't remember it, just look at your webbrowser. wink There is basically two ways to address this question:

1) To deny that she is not mentioned alongside the "big 3" of the 1980s.

2) To agree with the impression that she is not mentioned alongside the "big 3" of the 1980s and then to find possible reasons why this is the case.

totally and unequivocally agree. Yes Stevie and Aretha are more legendary and her godmother, Arethat certainly helped to pave the way for her. But as draws and popular, no way, no how are Stevie and Aretha bigger than Whitney.

When she walks in a room to this day she gets ovations. Cue the UK Xfactor mentor youtube, BET gospel show, AMAs, Oprah, the list goes on. I think besides her being legendary and iconic, part of it is her mystery. She is seldom out and about so there is a vacuum and a void as to where is she, what is she doing. When she does apear, there is a big buzz. Undeniable.

the great thing about it, Prince, MJ and Whitney are all friends and seem to have/had a lot of respect for each other despite their ups and downs.

Undeniably, whitney is the biggest Black Icon/Legend living globally after MJ past. I hope that she gets her wish and gets to work with Prince.

You want to undermine her because of THOSE things and that is fine everyone has their opinion. I find her to be much more than what you are making her out to be. Whitney was a talented vocalist and she has a nice hand full of classics. She IS an Icon in her own right and has people she has influenced THATS ALL I'm saying. wink

I hate to say this, but these days, people have a totally different view of Whitney Houston. In the 80s and early 90s,she was America's Sweetheart, singing all those sweet ballads with that mighty voice. These days, she is considered a trainwreck....someone who took drugs, married and divoreced Bobby Brown, destroyed her voice and her career.Remember her supposed "comeback" last year? Her tour was such a disaster that she didn't dare bring it to America! Everybody was talking about how she had ruined her voice.THAT'S how people think of her these days. She's no longer in the press because of her talent. She's in the press for being seen drunk at a Prince concert. So,when you talk about her "popularity" these days, make sure you're clear on why she's popular and why she's still getting press.

I'm not trying to undermine her. As I've said from the very beginning, I think she did that herself.

You mean she is an icon to you. Looking at this board, there aren't many who agree.

The person who is most likely to agree with you is Whitney herself who seems to haved dropped in to repeatedly tell us all the stats. lol
