Jefferey Daniels seems off to me and what rock did this Delisa person crawl out from under? That was a serious crackwhore weave.

Wait a minute, Shalamar was the SECOND black act after Michael on MTV?

I always thought Prince was...

lol, there is always some confusion about it.I watched MTV from the beginning and the first black artists I saw were...

"Billie Jean" Michael Jackson
"Little Red Corvette" Prince
"Electric Avenue" Eddie Grant

Those 3 videos were added in early 1983.In the summer of 83,they added:

"She Works Hard For The Money" Donna Summer
"Dead Giveaaway" Shalamar

So yeah,it's a stretch to imply that Shalamar were the second black act to be shown on MTV.

Even more interesting. lol

This was just OK. Miki Free was my fav part. Over all you learned more about how the whole thing got started than how the favorite incarnation of the group fell apart.

Howard Hewett looked OK to me, just fat. Jeffery Daniel got's this whole "I've lived overseas for too long to be a Yank anymore" syndrome, a la Johnny Depp....but he seems quite off in addition to just that. There's a weirdness there w/ Jeffery. He seemed spacey. hmmm

Jody didn't seem bitter or anything, but you could tell there was more that wasn't said than was w/ her. I got the feeling she was treated badly and wriiten off because she was a woman there (in their minds) just for her looks.

Yeah she didn't seem bitter to me but I guess Jody went through hell while as a member of Shalamar that some things were either not broadcast or it was some issues Jody kept to herself because she didn't wanna create unnecessary drama with either Jody or Jeffrey.

To me Jeffrey always seemed spacey so his behavior on the show wasn't so surprising to me. As for Delisa, good Lord, what happened? sad I have to see the first twelve minutes. I was playing around with my brother's MP3 player when I realized the show was on after 12 minutes. wall lol

okay, now i know the problem with this series, they need to hire some real film makers and interviewers. this show didn't teach me anything new about Shalamar. I found myself bored as hell...the few new juicy bits (like jody's pregnancy) are lightly touched on and then thrown away...a real director and interviewer would probe and find more on the topic.

oh well, it was fun hearing all the old songs and seeing how horrid Jeff Daniels and Howard Hewitt look. What has changed with Daniels' face? He looks odd now. Hewitt just looks like the pimp he has always looked...but instead of working mainstreet he'd be working East Oakland.

I agree about the show needing to hire real journalists to do the interviewing. That's TV-One for ya. I was just happy to hear Jody speaking out about how some of the things went down. This is the first time that I can recall that she has really talked about the situation. I would have rather it been an Oprah-like interview than a bits-and-pieces type show. An Oprah-like show (similar to what Prince did in 96) would have been excellent.

Can someone answer this for me? Is Howard the main reason the group split or was Jody? It sounds like they were all head strong and the label didn't help the situation. Man, those recording sessions must have been a trip.

As for Howard, I don't think he's aged badly. After all, he is almost 55 years old. I met him about 8 or 9 years ago and he was truly nice and genuine (very similar to the way he reacted to the fan while taping). Always hugging fans, shaking hands, etc. He really makes you feel special when you meet him.

Why was Howard's SUCCESSFUL solo career overlooked? He had great success on the r&b side of things.

Why was Jeffrey's solo projects overlooked?

When did "Dancing In The Sheets" win a Grammy? I cannot locate any info backing that statement up.

Why was the Babyface collaboration overlooked? That was truly the Shalamar reunion (on record at least).

So many unanswered questions and half-truths. Thanks TV-One for half-doing a job....again.

Dude, what is going on with unsung this season? The only good one so far was Minnie's. There is a Shalamar story, but shit was glossed over. No mention of Jefferey's marriage to Stephanie Mills at all and my older cousin told me that when they got married, that was big news in the black music world

I'll watch this again just to make sure, but I think Jeffery had work done on his face while Jody and Howard clearly didn't. Based on some of the earlier comments here, I expected Howard to look terrible, but he looks like a normal (yet chubby) guy of over 50. Jody looks great.

The show's biggest weakness is that they are only 1 hr long (47 mins w/o commercials) so it's hard to get much info about these people who had long careers at the top (let's say 5 years +). They seem to do better w/ people who had shorter lengths of success.

From what I could make out, Howard was the main problem. Before he joined, he seemed to have some small success on his own, so maybe he brought that 'tude to the game?! It also seems like Dick Griffey favored all 3 original the lead singers over Jeff and Jody. Treating them like expendable red headed step children couldn't have made them inclined to stay.

Howard Hewett's solo career was HUGE in the rnb genre and I'm not sure about Daniel's, but it seemed the focused on Jody because she had big POP hits. rolleyes

Howard was never skinny, even when he was young. I think the only work done on Jeffery's face was with a crackpipe.

Back then, people in general were a WHOLE lot thinner....and I never thought of or heard it said that Hewett was fat or even chubby. Clearly he now has middle age spread, but his face doesn't look bad (and still moves).

Crack doesn't leave you w/ a forehead or eyebrows that have no mobility. At the very least, dude's had 'tox. TBH, he looks a bit lifted. lol

lol Well there ya go...

As I've said before I knew little about Shalamar, listened to their music ( I don't remember if I ever bought any of their albums) so when they "went away" I didn't think much of it. For those who thought it was a BIG yawn that's perfectly understandable.... that's how I felt about Melba M./Minnie R. You saw it in real time.

As far a "Unsung"these types of shows are at the mercy of artist (those who are alive to speak of their careers) and what they are willing to reveal. So, some artist/musician's/ singers are going to be more forth coming about the good, bad, ugly, the dirt and some just aren't. I doubt many will be as straight forward as the DeBarges have been or Bobby Womack will be in his upcoming profile on "Unsung".

I see it was nominated for a best R&B Grammy in 1984, but I Feel For You won.

Not only that, "Dacing in The Sheets" is from the Footloose soundtrack. "Don't Get Stopped in Beverly Hills" was from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. They got that wrong too.

They had a short and turbulant marriage. It was rumored that he beat her. I don't know how this info got around, but that was the general belief about their relationship.

Yeah,I have heard that he was very abusive to Stephanie when they were married disbelief

Jeffrey was RUTHLESS.

At some point, he tried to push her outta the car WHILE its on speed disbelief I could tell where she got the emotion from when she sang "I've Learned To Respect(The Power Of Love)".

As for the special, I haven't seen any hints of bitterness from Ms.Watley,,,,she was speaking in a very matter-of-factly manner, if people found her to be bitter? Well, wouldn't you if you were in her situation?

Even Howard and them admitted about their mistreatment of her. Make no mistake though, she got the last laugh when everybody was sure she was going to be a flop.

Yeah he dogged her out BAD! Stephanie's friends was against her wedding this man. Some of her friends were jumping on top of the limo after the wedding was over protesting it. I don't know why he married her just to mistreat her? Jody was hating on Stephanie because she used to be his girlfriend.

Other than bad marriages and not getting along within the group it was boring.

As much as i love Jody,i'm just not feeling her oh they done me so
wrong stories. The music business is shady, always has been, always will
be. Howard and Jeff seemed to have good vibes about what they accomplished
and both acknowledged the ups and downs, the group's turmoil but both
seem to have moved on. Jody still seems to hang on to some bad feelings.
It's been 20 something years move on. I'm not expecting any type of reunion
out of this and Howard respectfully stated he wouldn't want to do it without
the other two members but if Howie and Jeff ever got that itch to do it
and Jody trips hell just get another female voice and do some select shows
and call it a day.

after all the turmoil with Shalamar and he became the leader he opted
