I just don't know how you characteize some singers as capable vocalists, but janet is not one of them, she is not a great or a capable vocalist she could only carry a tune.

Average.

i've heard better Karaoke singers, truth be told.

86-93 she did amazingly well off the Jackson name (I was fooled too, i admit), her material after those dates is pretty poor, that hasn't helped. It's natural that as Michael's star has faded, a lesser talent like Janet's has too. Hence, no sales, lack of interest etc.

She better hope for a solid Michael comeback of some kind. Otherwise she is finished.

No, she is done, no matter what. That last tour debacle hasn't helped her cause either.

Capable is that she can carry a tune and her voice blends well with the music

She's very pleasurable to these ears in the studio. But I'm probably not going to be purchasing a live album from her anytime soon.

Janet was a better vocalist during the 80's, especially during the Janet Jackson/Dreamstreet-era when she had to be.

That pretty much sums it up. I saw her in '98 and I dont ever need to see her again. Its the same old formula everytime.

To the OP, thanks for choosing this song to show case janet's vocals. rolleyes

You could have picked a song she was singing live because the vocals on this song obviously were touched up and you could tell the studio layered it.

Good question. Can the next one be about Diana Ross?

Of course Janet is a good singer.

Though she is one of a kind, Janet has a wonderful voice.

In a way, Janet's voice is like her beauty. She is beautiful, and there is no one who looks like her (besides other Jacksons).

This dualistic, either-or, us versus them, black or white style of reasoning is not a good approach to thinking. Janet does not sound like Whitney Houston, Ruth Copeland, or Tina Marie, but that does not make her a bad singer.

I recently watched an old interview with Vanity from the 1980s, and I heard her say something beautiful. Vanity was asked about how she views herself in comparisson to other musicians, and she replied that she did not compete with anyone other than herself, going on to state that she only tries to be the best that she herself could be.

I don't understand this constant need to compare. People are unique, and none share the same life experience (which is often the basis for art). It is a waste of time to discuss who is better and to analyze the success of a pop star's career.

I think Jimmy and Terry's production complemented Janet's vocals. The layering (double tracking?) that they did on her voice really made her sound wonderful. Listen to something like "Love Will Never Do Without You" or "Come Back To Me" and tell me that the vocal production doesn't all but make those songs. She doesn't have a strong voice, but it was used well, and the production really maximized it. The people that she's worked with since just haven't had the same effect.

Live is another story, obviously. When I saw her in the late '90s and early '00s her "live vocals" were pretty horrendous. shrug She did dance her ass off, though.

I don't know, nor do I care, if she's a good singer. All I know is the music behind her voice in the 1980s was great. Notice I said in the 80s. lol

I don't think people can justify Janet being successful only because of her last name - if that were the case all other 7 siblings would have been big in the 80's - they all attempted but failed to launch singing careers.

In the 90's when Michael was facing his allegations it was a burden to be associated with him - Janet did her best to distance herself from him hence the 'janet.'album. She did 'scream' as a favour / support for her brother not the other way round.

You must be some deluded Michael fan who thinks his s*** don't stank.

oh and by the way IMO Janet is not a good singer but she has some great melodies and is quite good at back up vocals - i really like the interlude before 'with u' on 20YO
