Yeah, Ben Harper's performance was pretty bad.

Ben was screaming on his versions of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and "I Heard It through the Grapevine" so badly I wanted the ghosts of David & Marvin to haunt him for the rest of his natural life. lol

Nah, my problem with Ben in that flick was that he sounded like Bob Dylan...or Bullwinkle or sumthin like that I dunno which one. It made me feel like, "This guy can't sing for shit." disbelief

Now I own a couple of his albums. doh!

Oh well, at least one of them's not too bad.....I think.

Because he's a rock singer, of course he can't sing the soulful material. He sounds like a heavy metal singer singing Motown music, lol.

I love hearing these Motown instrumentals. We should probably have a thread just devoted to instrumentals. cool

I catch major flack here for this, but I don't care; I prefer Diana's version of this tune. lol Marvin and Tammi outsing her (without question), but I've always thought the production on that one always just sounded like standard, by-the-numbers Motown. This instrumental just solidifies why I prefer it. It's more dynamic.

Musical wise, I'd prefer Diana's. Voice-wise, Marvin's and Tammi's. I love Diana's take on it tho. Both versions are the bomb joints to me.

nod I have to be honest when I first heard the long version of Diana's, the beginning sounded like a funeral service, lol. We have to remember Tammi Terrell had passed away the time this was recorded.
