I've always liked Janet's voice. I view her more as an entertainer than a singer. For me, you do not have to have the greatest voice in the world to move me.

I've you listened to her only because of her last name, then indeed you are a fool! confused

confused

i think you meant 'if' which coincidentally is one of her last decent tunes. But yeah, most people got into Janet back in 1986, The music and name went hand in hand back then. The Control era was great, still one of my favourite albums, all the 12inch singles were great too (The Pleasure Principle 12inch being my favourite of all time, that is pure perfection).

That summer was probably the most fun i ever had buying music. The whole Control project was fantastic and remembering how i used to lay out the vinyls and look at them, or have a listening session with my girlfriend at the time, makes it probably my favourite by any artist for nostalgia.

But no, i'm not into Janet now, and i'm sad about that. But her music just doesn't work for me now. 'All For You' was the end for me.

No.

And I'll say once again, if her name was Janet Johnson without famous family legacy behind her the majority of the people saying she can sing would bash her voice. See: Mya and Ciara

She literally holds her notes - she lipsynchs all her “live" shows.

It all depends on your reference as a good singer. For me, yes she is a good singer. She knows how to use her voice in ways that add layers to the music - from the seductive little whisper of songs like Anytime Anyplace, to more gutsy vocals of What About and Control. Now does she have the range of a Mariah - clearly not, but that doesn't make her a bad singer. And for what it is worth, Mariah's music doesn't grab me all that much whereas Janet's does.

And as for if she would have been a success without the Jackson name - I think it certainly opened doors for her, but her first two albums did nothing, it wasn't until she took control both figuratively and literally that she started scoring hits and making a name for herself.

I think in a day when you can autotune anyone to sound decent (yeah I'm looking at you Kanye) you have to give props to artists who actually use their voice as an instrument and can sing.

lol You do realize that the Jackson brothers are all famous in their own right due to being in the Jackson 5 and The Jacksons there after. Then there MJ alone. So again. Via her famous siblings people tend to think she is a more talented singer than she really is.

But when the rest of the Jackson brothers launched their solo careers it failed to attract the public. Janet is talented in her own right. If being a Jackson were the case I would assume the rest of the siblings would be just as famous as her and Michael.

Yeah the thing is that you dont have to have a "great voice and range" to be a good singer. Its what you do with you got that is important. I dont think Madonna has a good voice but she holds my interest because it fits her music, and thats not saying the music is bad, its not, its just that she isnt Aretha Franklin or Sarah Vaughan and we shouldnt expect every female, especially, to be that singer. I see this more with female singers than with males that we give passes to, we expect every female to have aretha like vocals where as male singers dont really have the bar raised that way.

So its not about voice and range, because we all know the acrobats out there in this american idol generation, but so many of these strong voices cant sing properly. And i know people cant get there heads around that notion, but its like a "great guitar player" that has speed and can do all sorts of things but at the end of the day all he is, is a show off with no depth.

nod

Co-sign. She has a very sweet voice and a great soprano. Her live singing is awesome and usually on point. nod

They were famous as The Jackson 5 and The Jackson (mainly thanks to Michael, though). They were never famous as soloists.

You are arguing a entirely different point that I am. It's not about who was the most talented in the famous family. It's about her being in a family that was considered to be R&B music royalty. Her family name is what attracted Jimmy Jam and Terry L. to want to produce her. They confirmed that in an interview years ago -- they wanted to work with her because she was a Jackson.

I understand. But that doesn't make her less talented then she is. Besides she already knows that she is mostly famous for being the baby of the Jackson clan.

No, but it does make her on par with Mya and Ciara as far as vocal talent is concerned in my opinion as I indicated in my initial post. Those two get bashed here by some for their lack of vocal talent. What's the difference? The family name to back them up and two damn good producers covering up their vocal flaws.

Already been done in this thread.

In concert, her ballads and some of the midtempos are live (the pre-Control medley on the last tour was live, for example).

As a fan of Janet Jackson, I will be the first to admit that Janet isn't a powerhouse vocalist. She is an entertainer (like Madonna, Britney). She can carry a tune, but has a very soft voice.

No, it doesn't. Ciara and Mya can only dream of reaching the heights Janet's reached in her career. Mya actually has a decent voice but it gets annoying after awhile.

Here's a video I found on both Ciara and Janet's voice. Basically Ciara's voice sucks! Does she even have a range?
