My initial impressions...

My 80's self would have hated this mix, but I really am liking it. Back then I shunned all the emo electronic music of the day in favor of disco. It was cool to discover the funk, but I missed much of this side of things.

This mix has a clear vibe to it, and lots of artists I have wanted to listen to but never got to. Examples--Echo & The Bunnymen, Kraftwerk, Arcade Fire, Gorillas.

New Order was definitely on the list of hated bands, along with Depeche Mode, but both of them seem pretty intelligent & innovative for the times, looking back.

I know some Roxy Music, but not this tune, which rocks more than I expect them to. This reminds me of the Killers, but the killers always sounds like they sing the same song! I think I need a Roxy Music cd. This song is great.

I have always heard from people that Echo is one of the great 80's bands. I only know one of their songs, and when someone would say it it would sound like a joke. But different people that I respect have said it, I have to take that seriously.

Kraftwerk is one of those names, but I'm not sure if I will explore them still.

Arcade Fire is still something of a mystery to me. I've heard three of their songs, and they are all completely different. I like this tune, not at all what I expected yet again! More bluesy. I liked this song a lot.

VU--Classic!

I haven't heard Julia before. I like Eurythmics better than Annie Lennox. She is a bit too slow, though a great singer. This song reminds me a little of Sting, actually.

Annie? Never heard of her. Nice song, doesn't do too much for me.

LCD, this is interesting, I need to give it a better listen. I can't decide if the repetitive nature of the piano is annoying or really great.

Gorillaz--I've always liked what I have heard by them. This is more interesting & melodic than the stuff I've heard on the radio. Why did it seem so short? It's over 4 minutes!

I'm on the road Moonbeam, but as soon as I get enough time to listen again, think about it and process a response, I'll post. Nice mix, though, from what I've heard so far.

That's what I thought as well. Ninety seconds, maybe two minutes, but the numbers clearly showed 4 minutes. Weird band! wink

I have to say, I don't love every song on this mix, but your writeup about why they mean something to you definitely made me appreciate them more. biggrin

That said, I LOVE that Eurythmics tune! Never heard it before but Annie Lennox is one of my favorite singers and the vibe of that song is incredible!

Also, the Annie and LCD Soundsystem songs remind me of Imogen Heap in a way. I guess she's not as original as I had once thought. razz

Overall a great mix! thumbs up!

Julia comes offa the soundtrack The Eurythmics did for the movie 1984 (for the love of Big Brother) and the entire album is amazing. Weird, but amazing.

My fave track, besides the title track and Julia is Greetings From A Dead Man, with it's sinister beat and synths. Even though some of my friends say it just drags on and on, I am strangely transfixed by it. I often play it back to back with Wendy & Lisa's White and To Trip Is To Fall.

I've procrastinated properly reviewing this mix long enough.

1. New Order- “Age of Consent” - Excellent. My love for this song kicked into overdrive when it was used in the Marie Antoinette trailer a few years ago. Now it may be my favorite New Order song ever. Much better than the songs from their later, slicker, style although I like a lot of those too.

2. Roxy Music- “Editions of You” - I only know Roxy Music's singles, but I like their earlier glam period the most so this one is a winner too.

3. Echo and the Bunnymen- “Never Stop (Discotheque)” - Another excellent song! Echo and The Bunnymen had such a strong string of singles during the 80s, it's hard to choose a favorite. “Never Stop” is right up there with the best of them. Love the combination of guitar, keys and strings.

4. Kraftwerk- “Computer Love” - I like my Kraftwerk tracks a little harder, but this one still gets a thumbs up from me.

5. Arcade Fire- “My Body Is a Cage” - Here's where the mix goes awry. sad I could never get into Arcade Fire and while I don't hate this song, it did make me scratch my head when it came on wondering what the heck happened to this great mix that I was playing. I find it overwrought and sickeningly melodramatic.

6. The Velvet Underground- “Heroin” - Now it's back on track! woot! The Velvet Underground & Nico is my favorite album from the 60s. 'Nuff said.

7. Eurythmics- “Julia” - I've never heard this song before. hmmm I only know of the “Sexcrime” single from the 1984 soundtrack. “Julia” sounds pretty good even though I'm not a big Annie Lennox fan at all, particularly after she went solo.

8. Annie- “Heartbeat” - I'm one of those people Ian turned onto Annie a few years ago and this song is a standout from her Annniemal record. It's a nice slice of alterna-dance-pop.

9. LCD Soundsystem- “All My Friends” - Awesome piano! I have LCD's self-titled album, but never bought anything else from them. I think I'm missing out.

10. Gorillaz- “Demon Days” - Pretty good closer. Normally, these type of choir-ish songs rub me the wrong way, but I like this one.

Just one clunker in the entire mix, really. smile

Beautiful write-up. I feel where you're coming from. I remember you gave me this track a couple of years ago -- the 12" version. Had it on my old black iPod for a while. Many of the songs on your list have intimate associations for me since they've been the soundtrack to my youth.

"Heartbeat" is still a magical tune. When I hear it now, it's sort of overwhelming given how much my life has changed. It can make you cry. I remember the first time I let that track sink in, it was Fall 2005, I was in New York, Madonna's Confessions was the buzz album, the leaves were orange, and I was walking the streets in a zip-up sweater looking at this track glow on my display. Ahh, I really loved the music of this time. Thanks for these tunes.

I definitely thought of you with "Never Stop"! Great to hear about your attachment to "Heartbeat"! Are you going to give us a mix as well? I'd love to hear what you come up with.

Thanks. I'm too all-over-the-place to devote myself to an org mix. I'd much rather listen in than compile something.

What a great soundtrack Marie Antoinette has! I never thought I'd live to see the day when "All Cats Are Grey" would act as the end credits for a song. touched

4. Kraftwerk- “Computer Love” - I like my Kraftwerk tracks a little harder, but this one still gets a thumbs up from me.

I like harder Kraftwerk too, but "Computer Love" makes me swoon! That said, their run from 1974-1981 is pretty flawless!

5. Arcade Fire- “My Body Is a Cage” - Here's where the mix goes awry. sad I could never get into Arcade Fire and while I don't hate this song, it did make me scratch my head when it came on wondering what the heck happened to this great mix that I was playing. I can see how they would turn some people off. My mom was a speech and drama teacher, so I think a flair for the dramatic was pretty much a birthright for me. lol The feelings I have about my dad's death are definitely quite dramatic, so this song suits it for me.

6. The Velvet Underground- “Heroin” - Now it's back on track! woot! The Velvet Underground & Nico is my favorite album from the 60s. 'Nuff said.

It's my favorite 60s album too! White Light/White Heat is right up there, too.

7. Eurythmics- “Julia” - I've never heard this song before. hmmm I only know of the “Sexcrime” single from the 1984 soundtrack. “Julia” sounds pretty good even though I'm not a big Annie Lennox fan at all, particularly after she went solo.

I'm surprised that you hadn't heard this track! I think you may quite like their material from 81-84.

8. Annie- “Heartbeat” - I'm one of those people Ian turned onto Annie a few years ago and this song is a standout from her Annniemal record. It's a nice slice of alterna-dance-pop.

It's definitely a little slice of heaven! I love that there are only two choruses in the song- it gives it great replay value!

9. LCD Soundsystem- “All My Friends” - Awesome piano! I have LCD's self-titled album, but never bought anything else from them. I think I'm missing out.

Sound of Silver is a MUCH, MUCH better album than the debut, and I quite like the debut! The emotional breadth cast on it is quite unexpected and breathtaking.

10. Gorillaz- “Demon Days” - Pretty good closer. Normally, these type of choir-ish songs rub me the wrong way, but I like this one.

I don't normally like those types of songs either, but the choir does not come off as a contrived effort to send the song into the stratosphere. It feels like a natural fit, especially in context with the whole album.

Just one clunker in the entire mix, really. smile

New Order: Wonderful opener as it perfectly captures the abandon of one's early 20s. Cool, though, that while there is a common carefree vibe in "Age of Consent" and my favorite New Order tune, "Fine Time," they feel drastically different: "Age of Consent" is youthful and innocent, as you've suggested. "Fine Time" is decadent, cynical, slick almost to a flaw. (And what does that say about me, eh? confused ) Another testament that synth music is perfectly capable of expressing nuance and varied moods.

Roxy Music: I listened before I read your comment on this one, and your inclusion of this song is exactly as I assumed! I figured this song is what it MUST sound like inside the head of a nut on the dance floor! nod I only know Brian Eno's later work. I need to do some digging into earlier stuff like this. Good pick.

Echo and the Bunnymen: I've never been a fan of what little I've heard from Echo and the Bunnymen (I recall always reaching for the remote whenever they came on MTV's 120 Minutes giggle), but I have to confess I'm getting a slight kick out of this song. You've gleaned a depth from this song that I'm too dense too appreciate, but it totally gives me the comfort and carefree vibe of a big gay bar. lol

Kraftwerk: Fun, innocent, vulnerable. I don't know why, but I like Kraftwerk less in adulthood than I did as a kid. And as sextonseven mentioned, I also like somewhat harder Kraftwerk tracks. Still, I better appreciate this track in light of your comments.

The Arcade Fire - I'm adding this to my iTunes library. smile It's funny -- pipe organ music OWNS me, and I tried listening to snippets of Neon Bible about a year ago based on the "baroque" buzz I kept hearing. Strangely, I wasn't feeling it. But if the balance of the album sounds remotely like this, I'll have to revisit it. I can do without Butler's whining, but the instrumentation is quite moving.

The Velvet Underground - I want to like them. I know I should, but... I only really like the feedback. shrug I'll need to do some more listening to their stuff.

Eurythmics - I'd never before heard this track, but it's beautiful, especially with your comments around it.

Annie - I don't know this artist, but the track here has definitely piqued my interest. I'll check her out.

LCD Soundsystem - The slightly dissident opening keys are driving me crazy! shake That aside, it's a fair track, but it moves me primarily because of how you've set it up. I'll listen a bit more to this before truly passing judgement.

Gorillaz - This is absolutely gorgeous. The organ and strings hit me on all cylinders. I was introduced to Gorillaz by my brother-in-law (whose musical tastes I rather hate). He got me to download "Dare." And based on that track, I assumed this crew could churn out something that'd make me move my butt, but nothing that I'd truly respect. You've totally made me reconsider my position.

My Top 3 favorites:
1. Demon Days
2. My Body is a Cage
3. Julia

Thanks, Moonbeam.

Ahhh, Technique! I very nearly included "Vanishing Point" on the comp, but "Fine Time" is also fabulous!

Good pick.

The first two Roxy Music albums are absolutely essential! I feel that I will soon get into Eno's solo material, based on his involvement with the Roxy albums and Bowie's Berlin period.

Neon Bible is a bit of a varied listen, but the pipe organ does return on a few tracks, most notably "Intervention"! I prefer Funeral as a whole, but there are many cuts I really like from the new one- "No Cars Go" brims with glorious majesty, "Black Mirror" is beautifully ominous, and "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" features an absolutely awesome transition from a quirky little pop song to an epic, swooning ballad.

The Velvet Underground - I want to like them. I know I should, but... I only really like the feedback. shrug I'll need to do some more listening to their stuff.

They aren't greatly appreciated on here, but VU were quite influential. Their debut is considered by many to be the first "alternative" album. There are a lot of different styles represented, and it brims with classic songs. If you like the distortion, you may want to check out White Light/White Heat. That album sounds completely electrocuted and fractured!

Eurythmics - I'd never before heard this track, but it's beautiful, especially with your comments around it.

"Julia" is one of their most unheralded singles, but one of their very best. Here's the striking, stark video!

Annie - I don't know this artist, but the track here has definitely piqued my interest. I'll check her out.

Check out my review of her debut album!

Gorillaz - This is absolutely gorgeous. The organ and strings hit me on all cylinders. I was introduced to the Gorillaz by my brother-in-law (whose musical tastes I rather hate). He got me to download "Dare." And based on that track, I assumed this crew could churn out something that'd make me move my butt, but nothing that I'd truly respect. You've totally made me reconsider my position.

I was surprised by Demon Days as well! Many of the tracks are dance anthems, but there are also a lot of more plaintive, inquisitive and reflective pieces.

Thanks, Moonbeam.
