In the last P&M show, when he sang "I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore", he sang, "I remember meeting you here in the good old days....the 80's".

He also sang it that way at Montreux in 2009.

And also my favorite rendition (beside the original) of Empty Room at that show....

I never believed that song was written about Mayte. I don't believe she would ever be disloyal to him. She's not perfect but she really loved him, still does. I don't think she is that type of person.

The rumor is that while she was living in Spain, she was seen with another guy. Don't blame her though. Prince was in MN, and apparently, moving toward, or already having the affair with Manuela. Either way, I'm sure she was tired of the distance and difficulty in the relationship. She was also older by that point, and able to figure things out - not the more naive and gullable 16 yr old that he first met.

People think that Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic is a breakup album, but many of the songs have nothing to do with a recent breakup - Tangerine, Strange But True, etc. The song Rave was written in the late 80's..

I know of the rumor I just never believed it. I can see her hanging out with a guy as a friend for companionship but sleeping with another man while married no that doesn't seem like her at all. It makes a lot more sense if it was about Denise or someone. They had a toxic relationship, despite how much they loved one another.

Yes, the relationship with Denise was toxic - they were only 22 yrs old, she did drugs, and he was not monogamous with her. She was strong-willed and stood up to him, as well as, saw other men while with him. But, I have no doubt that Mayte had probably had enough by 1998-99. Clearly, she was alone much of the time. Women have needs too. It's justified that she may have wanted to be with someone else. There's a song did around that time which makes reference to being "caught on tape" with someone else or something to that effect.

one thing i thought sounded very askew in the report and that was Judith Hill's quoting Prince as talking a lot about "the good old days" that really rang a bell with me because Prince, from his every indication, did not looking back, even for the triumphs, he liked to push forward, always, ever onward. So that sounded to me like something is wrong right there. I remember when he said he didn't even play his past albums, now, I don't know if that's true or not because he could say alot of things, but I absolutely wouldn't be surprised if it was true because he was such a force of nature, he gave no time to his triumphs or failures, just always onward to the next thing. so, that talk about the good old days really sounds to me like he was at the end reminiscing over his life, which is how it turned out.

The comments he made to Judith Hill and KJ about if I am not there (for performances months down the road, IIRC) you will still be there were unsettling to read as well. He MAY have been talking about rehab, but i really don't think so.

they also didn't make sense, if he's not there there's no show at all. Maybe he really was that out of his bean at least at moments.

I agree with Penny's point in that people get to a certain age and look back taking stock and reconnecting. However, to Pete's point, I do remember a few interviews where when asked, Prince stated he doesn't look back but lives in the now (I'll look for link). Interesting if that changed for him as Judith said.
Or, as we are learning more and more, there was the “public” Prince - an image he created filled with mystery and the “private” Prince, who was just an ordinary man with a huge amount of talent and creativity.

sure, there are so many things he said that blatantly are contradicted by his real actions but that one is not one of them, he generally moved onwards quickly, too quickly in fact, he never did milk purple rain, he also had new albums out before they were totally absorbed by the public, a major issue as far as his selling in those years. He did what he said, he moved forward and didn't look back, so it just didn't sound right.

Well, he was 112 lbs, basically not eating, and taking meds 30 times stronger than heroine. I would say it is understandable that some things he said didn't make sense, or only made sense to him at and how he was thinking at that time.

Physcally moving on, in terms of getting bored with the same songs and creating new material, is not the same as being emotionally nostalgic, or thinking back to past times in his life.

He also stated to Judith on the plane to Atlanta that he'd been sleeping a lot lately, and maybe it was time for him to leave this world. In the last P&M show, when he sang "I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore", he sang, "I remember meeting you here in the good old days....the 80's". He was relating that song to someone he was with then. During the first Atlanta show he talked about meeting Lisa, and how he almost sent her back to LA until he heard her playing piano down his basement.

*

I do think that he looked back, and reflected on his life throughout the years - even if he stated publicly that he did't, but I'm sure it was more frequent toward the end.

correct, i'm aware of that lyric and i remember hearing it clearly for the first time 18 or so years ago and again, i was struck then too, it wasn't like him (or maybe the public him as we are conjecturing). I don't think we know who that song was really for though, it was assumed Mayte, some said Vanity, or maybe some amalgamation of all of them, who knows.

I've also said this before - he was a deeply nostalgic person and always the one to bring up the past - even after starting the talk with "We will not talk about the past".

Agreed 100%. His nostalgia is in his music too - whether talking about an ex-lover that he missed and wanted back (Empty Room, I Hate U, Tangerine, Goodbye, Strange But True, and tons of others) or expressing missing things about his childhood (Musicology, Reflection). I have no doubt that he missed and reflected on the past - especially the 80's when he was unstoppable. How could he not? He just always put up a "tough" facade for the cameras.

that's true, he once said he threw away his drum machines once everyone started copying his sound, but it wasn't true because the Linn drum machine would make appearances throughout the rest of his career.

well, i guess what i'm saying here is that maybe he knew the walls were closing in and so his mind drifted back to better, funner days.

Yes, one of his later Engineers (Hans maybe?) tells the story of Prince having him send the Linn out to be repaired. Then he showed him how it worked, and seemed to have a sense of pride teaching him how to use it. Very sweet.

Many of the dates are already listed on the princevault site, but no doubt there will most likely be some corrections - as in with A Million Days, which was assumed to be written in the early 2000's, but was actually first recorded in 1995 - and there will be new information.

And that is why I had to ask how do these drugs affect someone's thinking. Please does anyone know? Something did not seem right with him and the things he was saying. It was like a different person and contrary to everything I have heard or read about him. It is either these drugs or depression because these things he was saying.

i'm not expert but I think it's obvious that drugs and alcohol change a persons thinking, changes what they say and do, ever hear the saying "drunk mouth speaks a sober mind" and many people would dismiss how Elvis acted because "it was the pills talking, not him". It's true, I had a friend who smoked marijuana, totally changed his whole attitude about addiction, he also changed into a different guy, paranoid, he verbally attacked me the last time we talked, I still don't know what to make of it all, but I'm certain drugs were a big part, maybe he was hiding how he was sinking deeper into drugs with ever harder drugs, I wouldn't know. I just hate the shit, just hate it, and the older i get, the less tolerance i have. I was watching a vid yesterday by a guy, psychologist who was going through how drugs change a person's thinking, it was fascinating and complicated, his name was jordan peterson. check it out on YT.

He loved being mysterious and hard to figure out - honest with his lyrics, but purposely cryptic so as not to divulge the subject or too much information. I'm sure he loved that everyone thought he wrote the song during the Musicology period. No secrets revealed that way smile
