Worst career move: Sueing his fans. Plain and simple. "Do you really know what love is?"

Well the only thing was his guests with the exception of Gwen Stefani, were really old news, EVE was done, and Sheryl Crow remake? really? RAVE was a disaster, as were the "unreleased" songs in this era. The difference with Prince working with Arista was it was a one off deal, no strong singles at all, and also Prince's promo for this record was very very poor and sarcastic at times, he was bad mouthing the label he wasnt even signed too.
Someone also cited the name change as bad, it wasnt really that, but i still get people asking "what is called now" or they still say "the artist formerly known as" or "OH hes Prince again"? Mainly these people are people that really didnt care for Prince at all, or just Purple Rain, and could care less about him now. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

In 1984/85 Prince could have asked for anything and WB would have given (not that this was something he exactly did or did not do) release 2 cds: ATWIAD and an album consisting of Possessed, Roadhouse Garden, Our Destiny, Manic Monday, Traffic Jam, Dance Electric, God the Love Theme and a few others . Under the Cherry Moon, should have been different, a movie that included the bands. UTCM would have had a whole different level of success. . Not firing the director for Under the Cherry Moon . Putting out better quality videos Promoting Around the World in a Day much more . Not allowing protege band more input, it would have given a more cohesive touch, they rocked the vision out, but more of them in it would have taken it further: the Time Sheila E the Family Madhouse(a full band outside of the SOTT band)

You know, he did alot of things that on the outside, would seem to sabotage his career. But truth be told, all of his albums were big releases. They all got reviewed/created controversy. He could have stayed with big labels if he wanted to, but ultimately he wanted to do everything his way. His tours are sold out. He has had huge success on the road. His live shows are great. Killed his career? Hardly. Now are the Rolling Stones as big now as they once were? I don't hear their new music all over the radio, and you won't anymore. The game has changed alot, for the worse.Still, Prince's "Breakfast Can Wait" was positively reviewed on Rolling Stone magazine. His music still has impact, even though he's not considered the hottest thing since slice bread. Does your love for an artist depend on whether he's on the radio/TV anymore? Does being played on the radio even matter anymore? I look at his body of work and even in his worst discs, there are always at least two tracks that are classics. Dude is in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, done a Super Bowl, played with greats, and is hugely respected among other artists, sold plenty of records, what more validation does his career need? None. He continues to make music now because it's what he does, who he is. He does what he wants, how he wants and answers to nobody. He has done it all on his own terms. How many other artists can say that? Yeah, he left money on the table at times, sometimes he came out way ahead. Don't worry, he's not hurting for money.
When I saw this thread, I thought to myself, isn't this an old way of thinking of the music business? The days of who sold more doesn't really matter, albums aren't selling anymore. It's all about singles and who will whore themselves out for fame. And the sad thing is, there aren't talented artists like Prince coming out anymore or if they are, they aren't getting heard.
Probably going to get flamed, oh well.

Months before UTCM was released,I had heard that Mazarati would be appearing in it.And if you listen to the lyrics to The Family's "High Fashion" (which sorta sums up the movie's storyline),I kinda get the feeling that they were gonna be in the movie, too.I'm guessing that both bands would appear in a club scene, but those plans were scrapped.

Thanks to his achievements in the 80s his career is doing ok.
His career as an interesting recording artist is what he managed to kill over the last 25 years.

For me Prince 'killed' his career after his so called 'bad xtc trip' in 87/88.. He gave up The Black Album and chose a different path. For me The Black Album should have been released as a double album with Lovesexy. Both albums I truly adore. The best of his 'raunchy' funk/r&b and the 'gospel' of Lovesexy, bounded by a booklet with the story on Spooky Electric. After the failure of Lovesexy (also because of the album cover) and despite his great tour, he chose to work on Batman. Commercially succesful and I very much liked the house/dance mixes of Batman. Prince was still at the forefront as a beatmaker and progressive artist. When I listened to the Femi Jaya remix of Partyman, I expected a 'dance' like Nude tour, but he went "back to real/oldschool".... Out went the computers and electronics and in came a full 'live' sound. Off course, it was great (as Prince live most always is), but after he lost himself in Graffiti Bridge (which did lack good 'beat making' and drum sounds by the way...), with The New Power Generation he became more of a 'standard' pop man, with funk/rap/soul/ballad/rock and even a reggae track.. Off course, there are still great moments from then on (especially on his 'jazz' side), but the prolific Prince was gone. Maybe this is also explained by his 'isolation' in Paisley Park and the lack of great engineers like Peggy McCreary. His 'sound' just went 'standard' and to polished. However, name me 1 other artist who was on the forefront for almost 10 years (from Dirty Mind unto Lovesexy).....???? But what if Prince would have had a good xtc trip and he would have stayed in the "electronic" world.....?? Prince meets Daft Punk...???
