screwdriver is not only a horrible song .. right up there with 'guitar' for hype surrounding a horrible song .. but the performance sucked too

bambi was just as bad .. especially when the double kick drum kicked in and hannah slowed the beat and momentum to a fucking crawl .. i was unimpressed with the musicianship of everyone including prince .. that screw driver song literally has 2 chords in it and one lil guitar riff that prince could play on the toilet .. and the flush would still be more interesting

bambi would have killed with mariah on vocals tho .. that would have been an interesting twist on a sorely mediocre and grating performance

prince coat is a step in the right direction .. the rest of his diana ross outfit is horrible tho

that coat is bad azz. I think a mens boutique I know of carries some one offs from this designer. They start at 5000.00 for a pea-coat with less embellishments and go up fro there.

Prince probably couldn't hear his guitar, so he used the other one. It sounded fine to my ears.

The stuff about the broken guitar makes me roll my eyes, because the guy can sell the broken guitar on Ebay and make maximum bank--buy back 3 guitars.

Prince really kicked some ass. The Bambi guitar solo was just awe imspiring. This could be the best version of that song live.

If he just wanted to protect it, he could have a tip made that matches the head of the cane.

Rubber tips are put on canes that are actually used for stability or assistance in walking.

My opinion on the performances

- Liked the afro hair.
- Hated the guitar choices. He should bring back his bright and cutting Strats instead of these crap guitars.

- Overal OK singing from Prince.
- Please don't let Donna Grantis play a solo ever again. She sucked. Uninspired descending of the pentatonic scale.

- Like someone else said: Donna can't play the Bambi riff properly, her last bend sounds flat.
- The drummer was OK but not good enough. What the hell was that manic bass-drum kicking during the Bambi solo? At one point she MISSED THE BEAT. I'm sorry for my hate people but that's just awful. And No I do not only want the Steely Dan sound. I like his rock too. But if you want to rock you need a good drummer! I miss John Blackwell and Michael B. But if he wants to keep it girly, why not Sheila? Oh I know why, because Sheila says what she thinks and Prince can't live with that.
- Ida is the only one who deserved to be on a stage with Prince.

- He left the background singers at home, which was good.
- Aside from all the negative comments, I still loved bambi because it's a great song.

I think the comparisons to Hendrix are apt. Why? Because, like Hendrix, he plays from his soul.

Yes, there are a lot of much better guitar players than Prince. But what sets him apart? He plays what he feels and makes you feel something with his playing. I see so many youtube videos of various guitar players who simply stand there and play notes, even during what's supposed to be a solo.

There are very few mainstream guitarists who do what Prince does and turn guitar playing into an art, rather than a talent.

Great synopsis. Most of the criticism was on the money and obviously you know your music and can hear bad musicianship when you hear it. It might be too early considering the few public gigs she has done with Prince, but I wonder if Donna has the same limitations on electric guitar as Andy did on acoustic guitar. Her solo on Screwdriver was so-so and to see Prince get out the way to let her shine was commendable but I can't believe that he let her do most of the solos on the 14 songs they have recorded according to Funkenberry.

I'd like to offer my take on your opinions (in order you gave them above)...

- Also digging the afro, and the entire look... that jacket was DOPE.

- Loved the guitar choices, and yes, I do play guitar. The tone was monstrous... through my large, well eqipped stereo system, at least.

- Okay, so Donna isn't a phenom, but she fits... even the solo, and especially when compared to Prince in contrast.

- Yes, I did hear the flat note on the bend in "Bambi".

- Although I also heard the double kick getting a bit crazy during "Bambi", she impressed me far more here than she had before. Can I imagine what Michael Bland would do on drums last night? Oh yes I can... but she hit pretty hard.

- I love Ida, and she's showing diversity on Bass.

- Background vocals or not, what this performance is, is drums, two guitars, and bass... that's it. No keys nor synths. The sound was big.

- Yes, Bambi rocked, then shot off to the stratosphere with Prince's soloing, and a sort of NEW ending for Prince.

The smashed guitar is a 60's Epiphone Crestwood (worth around 3k) and apparently was quite valuable to Kirk, this interview is from early last year:

"my main guitar is a white ’61 Epiphone Crestwood—that’s probably what you saw on that Hendrix stuff. For Hundred Watt Heart, that’s my favorite. It just feels so good, and it’s got mini humbuckers so the sound isn’t as thick. It’s not like thick magic marker—it’s more like crayon. When you’re using a distorted amp, the Crestwood offers more string-to-string clarity on complex chords. - See more at: http://www.premierguitar....viver.aspx"

Given what he says here, I doubt he would have been OK for his guitar to be smashed that way...

Loved Bambi, Screwdriver was alright.

From Kirk Douglas's twitter account, I think he is pissed about the guitar. It looks like he hadn't agreed to it ahead of time. Why else would he call it "bad behavior"? Prince's stunt was uncool, in my opinion. Break your own damn guitar ... or at least ask first.

I really thought it's more of a Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) type of look. Not that differenct what he looked like sometime around Controversy / 1999 either. Some SOTT tour era thrown in there too (especially when he "borrowed" the yellowish guitar).

Very well said. While it's probably unrealistic to expect every 'new' release from Prince to a completely orignial work of art, much of what I've heard from 3rdeyegirl so far seems very uninspired to say the least. Good, but, not original and definitely uninspired.

Prince's music used to be so appealing because he had his own, unique, sound, there was nothing like it...From Dirty Mind to Lovesexy and even The Gold Experience/Come era...It was incredibly exciting, funky, quirky, fun, touching & personal...

These performances are rock. very well played rock. but it's just that, rock and nothing else, like a billion other single minded bands out there. it's not very interesting musically IMHO..The lyrics of ScrewDriver are terrible, I felt I was watching Lenny Kravitz...

On a positive note, the bass player seems quite solid & has a great groove going on, I look forward to hear her play more interesting music. Prince still has great guitar chops, though I much prefer his jazzy/funky guitar playing, that style was always more appealing than his rock solos.

You probably would've had a pretty good point, IF, this recent performance was the only measure of Prince's guitar playing. But since that's not the case, the word 'mediocre' in reference to Prince's guitar playing (unless it's limited to describing this one particular performance on Jimmy Falon's show) is completely inaccurate and would seem to be the opinion of someone who knows very little about Prince's entire body of work.

This version of Screwdriver was his best imo. I even enjoyed it a bit more than Bambi. I don't really think his falsetto on this nor the original is that good. The falsetto on the original is only a bit cool because it seperates him from other rock legends doing thin falsetto on a rock song instead of screams like Ian Gillan did. Ian Gillan would kill this track. Screwdriver did it for me though. It's built like an ordinary pop rock song in many ways, but his attitude just makes it great. Not a classic song, but a superb performance. His attitude on the guitar on both songs is are is great too.
