Ha!

So now the poor slave is knocking his old masters' door...

If after all he's said and done against WB he'd be willing to work with them again for monetary reasons this would be the lamest and most pathetic Prince move of his entire career.

If I were WB's CEO I'd just tell this mofo to fuck off and to please close the door after leaving.

The guy has no sense of shame at all. He's just a whore.

Both him and us LOST a lot when he left WB and the only really good thing we got after that was The Rainbow Children. I really miss the WB years.

But if he's now trying to step back we would lose the little credibility he has left.

Log off.

Fingers crossed on this one. Prince really could/should take better care of his back catalog and legacy. Meaning, it should not be as hard as it is for new/younger fans to get find all of his past material. Prince has such a HUGE back catalog and it is astounding that an artist of his caliber hasn't seen fit to remaster/rerelease it.

One would think it would gain him a bunch of new fans, expose him to those who only see Purple Rain on the shelves, and really would earn him $$$$ in the long run. I have said it before, but many artists way less reknowned/important have taken much better care of their legacy. Lastly, all of us diehards would repurchase all of it because we need our favs to be in best sound quality possible. Not 198whatever CD audio quality.

The trouble there is that the end result would likley be remastered according today's standards, compressed as hell to be as loud as possible, losing all dynamics. The current CDs sound fine, you just need to turn them up.

the only way i can see a remasters deal working is if prince gets to own all the masters

to his albums after this 1 deal.

something like they re-issue all the albums, he gives them some extra songs and such,

is involved in the process and possibly some promotion or other and then they simply

work out how much of a cut warners is getting from this pressing of the albums. after

that all rights go back to prince.

could you really see prince doing something else? i doubt he'll invest his time in this if

it's for anything less. even if it will bring him a lot of cash. the real money is in touring

anyway so he doesn't really need a few, or even 10 million or so from one deal if he

still won't own the masters after it.

i just hope that any deal he can make will include warners involvement and he won't

be able to just buy his masters back from them.

that sounds mean but think about it, if he were able to walk in there and say, i'll give

you 50 mil and you give me back all my shit, he would then take his masters and we

would either never see re-issues or we would get completely butchered ones with all

the curse words edited out and songs like "sister" and such eliminated entirely.

my wish would be for him to talk to them, allow them to remaster his albums and give

them songs and alternate versions to stick an extra disc onto each album. that would

spark interest from most fans and ensure good sales figures, i guess. if done right, i'm

pretty certain the bulk of fans would rather buy these remasters than just download

them somewhere since this kind of release is all about the soundquality and the extra

perks like remastered outtakes etc.

pray

but for all we know he could have simply gone there to ask them face to face about

his royalties or sales figures. i can just hear him saying in some tv interview:

"last years i had a meeting with the people at warners and i sat down with them to

look them in the eye as i asked about why my figures say purple rain sold 40,000

copies last year and according to my check they claim it was 3,000".

my guess is they give him a bunch of cash RIGHT NOW to do whatever they want to them for a certain period (say 5-10 years), and he gets them ALL back at the end of that period, instead of in dribs and drabs every year as each album hits that 35 year mark.

if that's the case, get ready for a plethora of different remaster campaigns a la the Stones and Bowie.

Whether it's true or not. WB shouldn't re-sign him. Prince is well past his sell by date and record companies aren't doing much good these times. A waste of money spent if WB hand it to him. Prince is another Chuck Berry living off the Johnny B. Goode type of past. The Show is over!

Some of you guys really have no idea how the music industry works.

It would not be a bad thing for Prince to go back to WB. He wouldn't be selling out, or anything like that. His problem was never with WB as a company. It was with the people that ran WB at that time and guess that? Those people ain't there any more.

We are living in a different era now. Record labels prior to the internet/digital era and record labels now are not the same, AT ALL.

I dont see how remasters would work because didn't he and WB have issues regarding some of the more risque songs originally lined up for "Ultimate Prince"?

Would his new religious fundamentalism not have an effect on the re-issues?

Unless it may have to do with prioritizing and balancing his religious principles and his checkbook.

Also I need to ask. People often accuse Drfunkbeery as being some kind of Prince whore. Is he a genuine gossip columnist or does Prince feed him this stuff? (Am I being naive?) Because if Prince feeds the gossip then surely this is a business deal

of course he's being fed. this was never more evident than earlier this year when he completely skipped over ALL of the news about Prince's lawsuit and tax problems and website problems (you know, the actual NEWS) and only reported on new tracks at a local MPLS public radio station and exclusive news on an Ebony cover story.

which is fine. I have no problem with it. if that's what he wants to be, that's fine. and if that's how Prince wants to disseminate info, that's fine too. but let's not pretend that there are any "news" items at Dr. Funkenberry regarding Prince that haven't been emailed in press release form to him by the Prince camp.

It was explained why the tax issue was not discussed on the site but perhaps the eyes saw past it? I am sure you can feed yourself at times and not be fed everything?

Posted April 3rd, 2010

As for your question about Prince and his “financial woes” not being discussed here on drfunkenberry.com, let me say this;

the comedian Sinbad and Nicolas Cage are in more of a pickle than him. Check my site. I did not talk about Sinbad’s tax woes or Cage’s tax woes. From a journalistic point of view, I stuck to what I always did which was not report on star’s taxes.

Also, if I read it correctly, he owes like under $3 million to a promoter and about $450,000 in taxes. Let’s see…..he makes about $3 million per show so he does 2 shows and he is out of the problem. Hmm. Sure doesn’t sound like a problem to me. If you worked for 2 days, would your money woes be cured? OK then…..

I think they need him more than he needs them imo. the record companies have been doing pretty bad for quite sometime, theres cuts and closures in that side of the industry everywhere. artist don't need record companies anymore to be big thats why they're losing there minds over downloads and are the ones that are pushing to try and sue the ordinary people left right and centre for it.

It sounds to me more like some sort of remasters/getting the masters or a new hits album or even better some PR promotions which would really be good for him.

Naw, on this i have to agree with j7, to me it is just wrong to publicize peoples serious financial business, there has to be a line where something is entertainment and crossing over to their personal affairs.

I mean some people have no problem crossing that line and that is something each editor must decide, but that's something that goes into deeper ethical discussions.

While its already out in the public i may joke about on a discussion board like this, but i personally would not make the call to further fan the flames if i ran a entertainment site. If its already public information i would just trust readers already had or could get the info from elsewhere.
