I wanted to make sure my personal Prince collection was up to date to include the best sounding versions of any officially released song so I created a list that focuses on the format availability for all 7" edits, 12" mixes, b-sides and non-album tracks from the "Vinyl Era." As Rhino began releasing Prince's 7" & 12" singles as lossless downloads last year, and as some rare Warner CD singles and compilations exist with 7" edits and 12" mixes, I figured my fellow collectors may find this list useful (and hopefully assist in updating/correcting it).

This list is NOT meant as a substitute for a discography database like Prince Vault, but rather a quick and easy way to find a LEGAL and presumably better sounding version of a 7" edit, 12" mix, b-side or non-album track that only ever appeared on vinyl. All entries in the list were checked against Prince Vault, Sleevographia & Discogs, but errors happen! Please inform me of any corrections, especially if there are CD and/or official download versions of songs available that I have listed as "Vinyl Only."

List Rules and Methodology
1) The list is comprised of 7" edits, 12" mixes, b-sides and non-album tracks. I used US vinyl releases as my primary track-listing source and UK releases as my secondary.
2) The list stops when the vinyl-only single era ended for Prince in '88; the term "Vinyl Era" refers to all official vinyl releases from '78 to '88.
3) The list contains no unofficial remixes or edits.
4) Due to time constraints, the list only includes official promo edits and mixes available on CD or via download. It does not include promo edits and mixes available on vinyl. If the list gets uploaded to Princepedia the vinyl promo versions can added by the community.
5) Due to time constraints, the list only includes: a) the region, name and catalog number of the CD single, b) the name of the CD compilation, and C) the region and name of the download store. It does not include the region or catalog numbers of the CD compilations or the names and catalog numbers of the vinyl releases. If the list gets uploaded to Princepedia this information can be added by the community.
6) All officially released songs appearing on CD and/or available via download are assumed to be sourced from a Warner Bros. master tape and therefore inherently superior in audio quality to a home or bootleg vinyl transfer (i.e. free of vinyl surface noise). However, there are some officially released songs that appear to be sourced from vinyl as well, and these exceptions are noted with an "x".

Which lossless store(s) are you referring to?

Rhino Record's offers them in Apple Lossless, FLAC or WMA. Let Rhino know you support these releases with both your wallet and a quick e-mail to their customer service as I think we would all love to see more of them released (especially Parade era 12" mixes). I sent them a big thumbs up e-mail yesterday after I purchased lossless copies of "Love or Money" and "Hello (Extended Version)". It was so nice to be able to replace my vinyl transferred copies with these versions - no more snap, crackle and pop!

Which online store has this?

The UK 7digital.com store, the Amazon.co.uk MP3 store and I think (but not 100% sure) that most EU iTunes stores all have lossy versions of "God (Love Theme From Purple Rain)" as well as the other "lossy" tracks I listed above. Note these songs are not available on the US versions of the stores unfortunatly.

Could the EU forumers tell me if there are lossless versions avaiable from other EU resellers?

thedance I think that was a UK ad, as the US didn't get all of those singles as digital download and the US can't access the UK 7digital store.

The US did, however, get a better audio quality format (unless an EU forumer can point me to lossless versions of these songs. I'd love to have the long version of "La, La, La..." in lossless!)

Jazzz, I see you changed your post, but you were asking aobut the "Alexa De Paris" edit? I have the UK Letitgo single, but mine has the Extended Version. Was there another single released? This is what I found on discogs. Let me know!

I just downloaded the Hello Extended Remix from Rhino as Apple Lossless. The sound is outstanding. $1.49 - no need to get the Raspberry Beret Remix since it was on Ultimate a few years ago.

Once they load Kiss/Love Or Money remixes, that will be about all they have that isn't already out on CD.

OK, the list is now updated to include 7" Edits. I got so fast at using Princevault and Sleevographia I figured "what the hell" and went ahead and added them. The next part of the job will be to update the list so you know where to find these songs (i.e. America (Extended Edition) - "Minneapolis Funk" Compilation CD, Warner Brothers France).

Please continue to review the list and double check it for inaccuracies or omissions; let me know what changes needed to be made and help me keep the list up to date.

This is just a very small thing but Erotic City on both the 12" single and 45 is titled Erotic City (Make love not war, Erotic City come alive), whereas La La La He He Hee is only titled Highly Explosive on the 12". So technically "Make love not war....." is the title of the extended and edit version but "highly explosive" could be the subtitle of just the extended version.
