Embarrasing moments when listening to Prince with your friends....

What songs have you shared with other non Prince friends and you were embarrassed when Prince let out a scream or did something bizarre? Like you wanted to turn the volume down for that part?

Like God Vocal is a good example. I mean I can listen to it and like it. But my friends who did not listen to Prince....

I don't particularly care what my friends think as far as my taste in music goes. So I've never really been embarassed. But I can remember them giving me a hard time about a few songs.

The opening line in "Interactive" when he asks, "Are you readaaaay" didn't go over too well. I'm sure you can guess why. smile

I recall them laughing at me singing (or atleast trying to sing) "Do U Lie" in highschool too. Again, it's probably obvious why.

I also remember a friend saying during the opening part of "Cream", "That's why I don't like Prince, he's always doing some weird shit."

It's like your listening to a cool Prince song, then it changes into some weird part. And your like, why the hell did you do that? The only time it really worked was Lets GO Crazy, extended version.

i never play any music when friends are near. they always have comments.
stupid comments. it gives some music a bad aftertaste if you constantly
remember a dumb comment someone made about a track.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

If you're embarrassed by listening to Prince w/ your friends, you shouldn't listen to Prince at all.

Being enbarrassed by Prnce music only when you are with others is really your problem. I would do some self inventory to find an explanation for that.

Ha - no it isn't. You guys take yourselves way too seriously.

Prince makes a lot of songs that are best enjoyed in private. Nothing kills the ride to a Metallica concert like "Solo" popping up on your iPod.

I can understand why people who are into Prince would be embarrased by his music at times. Everybody who knows me, knows that I like Prince's music, but I just wouldn't hit them over the head with a song like, "There is others here with us" in front of them, u know? That would be weird...that song wouldn't go over to well in very many settings, I don't care who you are. Prince, is one of those artist that everybody respects that he is a genius, but even to this day, he is still looked at as weird, but hey, it is what it is...

clapping I agree, when I was younger there were certain songs that I liked but I really couldn't just play them around people, "Get Off" or "Sister", especially "Sister".

Why does there have to be a soundcheck? I don't have a songcheck. You don't have a clothescheck.

A few years ago when I used to work out the back of a resturant, I used to play Prince a bit. And yeah, I'd always be skipping songs. Not because I was embarressed, more so because I knew if they heard stuff like the (ahem) 'self appreciation' section of "Do Me, Baby", or the "tourists at Disneyland" section of "Lady Cab Driver", then I'd never hear the end of it.

I've learned over the years that you have to pick and choose your moments to stand up for him. When you're in a work environment with people who you're only friends with because you work with them, and who wouldn't know a "G flat major with an E in the bass" if it slapped them upside the head, then you're only going to be fighting a losing battle... lol

1) When I turned 21, my college roommates and a few of their friends were all hanging out in my dorm. My roommates knew I was a Prince fans but some of their friends started cracking up when they heard "Adore". I just remember them making fun and saying "man, this is alright if you're with a lady or something but turn off this bulls%@t"
I was pissed but they made it up to me later when they bought me a lap dance.

2) Okay, this one was on purpose. I had a big family reunion many years ago when I was a teen. I decided at one point to slip on a little 1999 to liven up the proceedings. My kinfolk (imagine the most rural group of countrified rednecks you can think of...then double it) made it through "Delirious" but "Let's Pretend We're Married" had exactly the effect I hoped. They were all running around like a skunk ran into the room and my uncle finally found the boombox and turned it off. "I'm not hip enough for that, I guess", he said. It was absolutely hilarious.

3) Don't know if this is embarrassing but I once had a restaurant owner have to run to the jukebox and turn it down because I put my quarter in and picked "God".
All good things they say never last...

It wasn't entirely embarrassing but because it was during that time when no one really knew I like Prince, I kept it a secret because I didn't want to be made fun of, and on top of that, I think my mom sort of knew about it and kept annoying me about who is singing the song, I didn't want to answer at all, I wanted to keep my love for Prince a secret, now at the age of 18, I don't give a fuck.
