Yeah, they sound great. They still have a ton of songs to get off of vinyl though (hence the thread)... x14 12" songs by my count and several more on 7". smile I can do w/o the 7" edits but I woulld love clean copies of those Parade & SOTT 12" remixes, not to mention "Sexy Dancer (Long Version)."

Yeeus...! nod

The ordering process and download/delivery was very easy. I hope they do in fact load the remainder of his 12" remixes, as I will be buying them.

A note about this compilation, it's my understanding that America - Extended may have been ripped from vinyl for this CD (maybe someone can confirm or dispel), though the release is legit none-the-less. Also, the timing is slightly shorter than the vinyl 12" at 21:31 vs the original 21:46.

Hey Squirrelgrease,
Unfortunately, "America" is a vinyl rip - and not even a good one at that. Honestly, I don;t know why they even bothered, as they didn't even try to filter it or clean it up; a real disappointment for people like me that payed good money for that CD. On the plus side, you do get the Cd quality version of the "Big Leg Mix" of Morris Day's "Fishnet", so not all was lost....

Wow, that's really disappointing but I appreciate the info! Perhaps I will note that in a future version of the list.

It sounds like "Erotic City' from the US Rhino Lossless store is a vinyl rip as well, so you may want to track that song down on the German Warner 3" CD (which also contains "I Would Die 4 U (Extended Version)"). It has dynamics over the German version (which has tape hiss), but I can clearly hear pops on certain downbeats. At least they tried to "hide" them. I think the German release with a little EQ sounds better though.

The US Rhino lossless versions of "Love or Money" and "Hello (Extended Version)" sound clean; same goes for the Lossy "La. La, La, He, He, He (Highly Explosive)" from the EU 7digital store. I will listen more closely to make sure, but they all seem to pass the test at first glance.

"God (Love Theme From Purple Rain)" from the EU 7digital store has no pops, but it does have a noticeable undercurrent of hiss, so I guess it was sourced from tape. A little EQ and this one sounds better than my vinyl transfer, so I will pick it as the "definitive" version in my collection (vinyl surface noise distracts me to no end).

"Love or Money (Extended Version)" from the EU 7digital store sounds to be a vinyl rip. The dynamics are better than the version on "T's" archive, and the surface noise less up front, but it still sounds like a rip none-the-less. Perhaps there is a Audacity merge job between this version and the US Lossless version in the future... so many projects!

This is just a very small thing but Erotic City on both the 12" single and 45 is titled Erotic City (Make love not war, Erotic City come alive), whereas La La La He He Hee is only titled Highly Explosive on the 12". So technically "Make love not war....." is the title of the extended and edit version but "highly explosive" could be the subtitle of just the extended version.

Like I said, it's a very small thing smile

No, this is GREAT! So what you are saying is that I need to title both versions of "Erotic City" as "Erotic City (Make Love Not War, Erotic City Come Alive)" and simply distinguish them by time?

I think I titled the two versions of "La, La, La, He, He, Hee" correctly in the list however: the "Highly Explosive" long version is only available as a download and the non subtitled short version is on CD. Let me know if something is wrong though. BTW, is there supposed to be an extra "E" in the last "Hee"? If so, I will correct it.

Let me know if you spot anything else. Thanks dj!

OK, I updated the list to include what I call "Sourcing Exceptions". All officially released songs appearing on CD and/or available via download are assumed to be sourced from a Warner Bros. master tape and therefore inherently superior in audio quality to a home or bootleg vinyl transfer (i.e. free of vinyl surface noise). However, there are some officially released songs that appear to be sourced from vinyl as well, and these exceptions will be noted by an asterisk "*".

Per my notes a few posts above, the following tracks have this dubious distinction:

"America (Extended Version)" Note: this appears on a Warner Bros. France compilation called "Minneapolis Funk."

"Erotic City (Make Love Not War, Erotic City Come Alive)" Note: this pertains to the lossless US version, but NOT the German CD version! The lossy EU version is unconfirmed so EU forumers please let me know; as I assume they are using the same source as the US, however, it may have the same issue.

"Love or Money (Extended Version)" Note: While the EU extended version is ripped from vinyl, the US standard length lossless version of "Love or Money" sounds to have been sourced from a master tape.

Edit - Added Notes

Thanks for the confirmation. I think that's why I didn't pick this CD up, as I heard that it wasn't a good transfer. I have plenty of excellent sounding vinyl rips of America - Extended (which is a favorite of mine). I also have great vinyl rips of the Morris Day stuff too. biggrin

I wonder if Prince actually sees a dime from Minneapolis Funk as it seems he was left out of the loop on many non-domestic releases. That "Ways Of The Pharaoh" email seemed to suggest Prince was hella pissed about WBs handling of his product in that regard.

Thanks Blackbelt for the great specific details on which downloads appear to be vinyl rips. The information is invaluable.

Why is this not a sticky? The main purpose of this thread is to actually legitimize some of the hard to find favorites by educating orgers on what is legally available and get the money into the artist's bank account.

Yes there is an extra "e" on the last "he" smile

Most people just call the song "Erotic City" even though the subtitle is "(Make love not war, Erotic City come alive)". Also the subtitle for "17 days" is "(the rain will come down, then u will have 2 choose. If u believe, look to the dawn and u shall never lose)". It's just easier to say "17 days" lol

Save for "America (Extended Edition)" on the French CD comp, I own legal copies of every song under my "Known 7" Edits, 12" Mixes & B-Sides" listing, and many come from CD singles released in Japan and the EU. But you know what's really crazy? Sometimes when compiling a list of 100 or so songs, I forget there needs to be an "E" for the title of an oddly titled B-Side track & I'm not in a position to reference Princevault (ironically I had it correct in the first place, but I thought it was a typo when I cut and pasted it in, so I "fixed" it). But it's nice to see my efforts are appreciated.

If you want the point of this thread, go up three posts to see what squirrelgrease wrote. If you can contribute, great... seems like several folks have already been helped by what we are doing here. Remember that in spite of the awe-inspiring Prince knowledge which you clearly posses, it takes a lot of work for mere mortals like me to compile something like this.

If you have come to simply sniff at what I am trying to do, than piss off.

Supercool. Changes noted and updated. The full title of Erotic City is used for every version in the list, but I separated them by time. Interesting to note that the full length version on the German CD is 6 seconds longer than the US Lossless download version (which makes sense if their sources are different).

I think "17 Days" will stay "17 Days" for this list, though! smile Thanks dj.

Oh, my pleasure! And thanks for the kind words. Look, I can tell my wife, daughter, friends and co-workers all day how much it sucks when Warner chooses to source a rare Prince 12" mix from vinyl, and all I get is blank stares. At least here this madness is appreciated. smile

I like the idea of having this end up in the Princepedia. I figure there are a few more things I need to do:

1) Add track time lengths
2) Add the name of the CD comp/single/download store where a collector can find the song.

After that, and any corrections, I think rev 1 would be ready to be uploaded. I have a busy week @ work, but will try to make changes when I can. Of course I will update this list based on corrections posted here or OrgNoted to me as well, so keep them coming.

Just a couple more things (boy do I feel like I'm being picky lol )

Alexa De Paris is how it's spelled. You have an "i" in Alexa.

Also, the technical title for "Alphabet Street" is just "Alphabet St."

Both changes noted and fixed. I ended up compiling this list on a laptop while by 5 month year old was sitting on my lap, so, to be honest, I'd be shocked if there weren't more of these errors.

But seriously, I appreciate the feedback... we need accurate titles so folks can make sure they are referencing the right thing. Thanks again!

There is an excellent illegal bootleg collection of 7" edits, yes. But again, the thread is about what is available legally. And if someone were to actually read the entire thread, they would know that PrinceVault was one of the references that Blackbelt has been using, as he actually stated this.

Yes, I own it. It is a boot, sourced from vinyl in many cases. You really don't get the point of this thread (which is remedied by simply bothering to read it).

The list in the first post was pulled from my own collection and checked against Princevaut and Sleevographia. The Princevaut is great if you want to spend hours wading through page after page of singles to find this info out. If you really want to be hardcore, hit up Sleevographia to pull the data right from the label.

BUT... THIS list is designed to help make sure people's collections are up to date in light of newer digital releases slowly coming out, that's all.

If this whole exercise is such a waste of time, please point us all to this "professional" list you speak of... you know, the one that can tell us all the best / most current legal format for vinyl era Prince releases. Don't just cough up a link to princevault or sleevographia either... I want it to be in a "professional" listable reference format so it can be of some use to me and others.

Cool promo 7" DJ! Thanks for digging that out.

What are your thoughts on adding Promo edits? I was tempted to do this but I realized that most will never see a digital form. Perhaps a separate section after the bulk of the work is done for the official releases? Promos seem to be a whole can of worms.

December1984 - GREAT find. I think I actually have that CD too, but never ripped the edit off of it... I think I went right for the remix. I was snobby about edits at one time. Now I love 'em in small doses (go great with workouts).

Edit - List has been fixed! I added a line acknowledging both of your contributions as well. Thank you both.

I'm not sure how deep you wanna go. I threw that one out there so you knew it was available. Also, I have an officially released edit of "Girls and boys" on the German 12" of "Peach". I assume it may have been on the UK double CD single of "Peach" as well. I don't have the time of the edit right now and I can't check because I'm at work and then off to a Superbowl party lol I'll check when I get home unless someone else can confirm times and wether it's on CD or not.

There are also the edits of the Batman songs, like "Partyman" without the Joker, on some UK CD's.

Again, great thread!

T set the standard with his collection. It says a lot about Prince, Warner and the whole screwed up nature of Prince's backcatalogue when a boot has a longer AND better quality version of a P track than an official Warner release.

OK all, MAJOR update. I reformatted the song titles, added the track length and updated the list to include the names and catalog numbers of CD Singles & CD Compilations. Now if you are tracking down a legit digital copy of one of those old vinyl classics, you know where to start.

I will update the vinyl only section with track length in the future.

Have fun!
