Sorry... when I said '96, I was thinking of the first time I paid attention to him. It was at the Today Show. I said to my friend, "Who is that?!" drool
In 1993, I believe he was bald. nod

no morris had hair when he 1st joined ..it wasn't until the beautiful experience film that prince started cutting morris's hair bald

Prince doesn't make Mr. Hayes' hair choices. confused

Prince's opening was cool as he pointed to the audience with his back turned. Loved the first two lines sung acapella"U don't really know me, U just think u do.....The mural was attractive enough. Great performance but I just wanted more songs.

I must be becoming less of a Prince fan. I knew about this performance but never bothered to set the Tivo. I worked 16 hours on Friday and missed the performance. I would still like to see the performance.

love turn me loose though, but also the ones listed above
especially forever in my life

They're great, I'm not putting them down. I'm talking about composition, songwriting. When he says Turn Me Loose "isn't even a song," I assume that's what he's talking about.

Days of Wild, Lady Cab Driver, When Doves Cry are barely songs themselves, and yet they're classics (maybe not Days of Wild). Prince has been doing it forever. The entire Black Album is barely songs, hell even Purple Rain is barely a song. lol

days of wild is a classic..the roof blows off the ceiling when he does that song live headbang
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

so sure on that? prine diesings their outfits most of the time and i'm pretty sure 4 the overall look of a band back then, he was telling them how 2 wear their hair and all.

Prince was great as always but my girl Ledisi was the bomb. I'm from the San Francisco Bay area and I've seen this woman perform several times. She needs to really blow up soon. I know she was nominated for a grammy this year but this girl has been paying her dues forever.

oh wow... that's really something. I'm still smiling over here. haha, I'm extra glad he wasn't wearing shades today, so I could see his eyes. cool somehow makes the performance a litte better cuz people do connect with the audience that way.

Good song cool
somehow, im getting a feeling that if that's on the supposed new album, it's gonna go back to Musicology or perhaps granting the wish of many to "bring back the funk"

So glad I remembered to check it out tonight giggle keep forgetting about it,

Classic for die hard fans, I suppose.

That song always disappointed me, because I'd always heard how great it was, but from people who saw it live. Of course they liked it, they even liked Life o the Party live.

life of the party live is hot because he took the music from james brown's hot pants and sang the lyrics 2 life o the party

Damn, I missed it, and thanks to Prince being such a prick with the internet, I guess that means I'll have to wait a long time to hear the song.

For the sake of this discussion, though, can we please qualify what the hell we mean by the definition of a song?

I heard someone say Purple Rain is barely a song, and well, that just plain doesn't make sense.

So, what do we mean by "song" anyway? Is the new song lacking a bridge, hook, or proper chorus? I'm confused here.

yeah why aren't these songs? Cause they don't follow guidelines? If they do they're products not songs, songs come from within. Unless you're very structured inside....
eek

Yes, I meant because of structure, but you all are misunderstanding me. The new song was criticized for that reason, "not being a song." I was saying, many of Prince's best songs are "barely songs."

If you sang Purple Rain for someone that had never heard the record and didn't know Prince, would they get it? Le Grind? Tamborine?

They're great songs, despite not having a clear melody, hook, etc, like a great pop composition like I Feel For U or Little Red Corvette.

That's what I say about DMSR. "Work your body like a whore" is an amusing line, but it's not why I like the song. It's still funky if he says "Work your body like you want some more."

I love Days of Wild, but that song had really gratuitous swearing in it. I wouldn't mind new Prince censoring it.

Okay, so I heard the new song. I'm going to listen to it a few times, but so far it is pretty dull. It's another incredibly basic song with no creative energy behind it. It's routine Prince.

lol I never liked Prince just for his swearing, I like his music. I don't understand why people are so upset about him cleaning up live stuff.

Now if he was changing the masters and you couldn't get the original versions of the songs, that would be different, but I don't want him to do stuff just like on the records. That's what records are for!

  • A. Not Prince's fault: You weren't watching TV, not hearing the song (Prince didn't make you miss it).
  • B. People saying "Purple Rain" is barely a song are being sarcastic, of course it's a song.
  • C. Be not confused.

I can't watch the show in my area, so I had no chance to see it.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I posted that SODOMY is against the law in 13 states BUT I was corrected, it's only 2 states now. (then again we don't know when Prince wrote the song.)
I still think the song is about anal sex.

He's such an A type personality that I tend to believe he's a bottom with top tendencies.

That or he's versatile.
