The Last Person To See Denise “Vanity” Matthews & Prince’s Heartfelt Tribute

Feb 17, 2016, by Aria Elise

Monday night, fans and entertainers alike were shocked when they heard of former singer and model, Denise "Vanity" Matthews had passed away.

But it was one entertainer specifically who was one of the few who last saw the woman of God alive.

Rapper MC Hammer tweeted that he had just attended church with Matthews on Saturday: “Vanity left church after giving a beautiful testimony of appreciation for her Pastors & Thanks to her savior Jesus, I was there,” he tweeted. “I was looking for her Sunday and the announcement came that she fell ill during the night.”

MC Hammer often tells the story of growing up in church and losing his way with music, but eventually finding his way back to the Lord. Something that Matthews could relate to and both shared common friends. Hammer and Denise attended a Church of God In Christ denomination.

It was Hammer that co-signed reports that Matthews had said she was “ready to be called home” upon leaving the church.

Touching tribute from Roxane Harper (Pastor at church Denise regularly attended) :

Up until this point I have been unable to speak of the lose of my daugther, Evangelist Denise Matthews. She was a true JCFAN who always supported us in every that we did, even until the end. She loved our Jesus with all of her heart and soul and was a witness for Him that could only be compared to those in the Bible. Our precious Denise suffered in her body for over twenty years but amazingly never missed a service unless she was really sick, in the hospital or off ministering to others. Even though she didn't feel good, she showed up on Saturday night to appreciate us and to say goodbye. I can see that now. It was the goodness of Jesus to allow us to worship together one last time. She was funny and quirky and had an infectious personality. Oh how I'm going to miss her. Denise loved us until her last breath. We were her spiritual parents charged by God to love and care for her. With tears I write that there is a deep hole that has opened up and we are struggling to keep from falling in it. The Word of God is sure and we delight in it's healing power. Therefore, I declare and decree the same Word over our lives that God spoke over Joshua: Josh 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Denise was an angel sent from God for us to love and care for and to brighten up our days on this earth. To all those who really knew her she will always be a shining light. She told us Saturday night that she was ready to go with Jesus and so she did. We're going to miss you Dee Dee. I love you so much. See you in heaven. Our Jesus is coming soon and we'll meet you in the air.
1 Thess 4:17-18 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Sleep well my sweet Dee. As you always called us--Love you Jesus Mom and Dad.
P.S. She requested lots of colors at her home going. May the peace of Jesus rest upon you all.

Thanks so much for this. Would you happen to know if they are in need of donations?

Sorry I do not know about donations, if I hear from the Church (where the Celebration will be held) I'll post it here or you can contact them yourself to ask - it seems a big and popular Church with a lot of different acticties going on, so they might not even get the chance to respond before then. I'm outside U.S. but for anyone there, the Church has phone number on contact details also.

Here is the website :

http://ucapostolic.org/

Also Facebook page :

https://www.facebook.com/ucapostolic

(Maybe they will make further announcements on there)

Would not make donations on Blame It On Vanity site (http://blameitonvanity.com/) just now, only as not sure if she had manager or anyone that will receive them, it seemed like it was just herself dealing with book orders, correspondence, etc. Or if someone or her family do deal with such things in the future, it may be some time until they get round to doing so.

I really hope her book will get republished in the future or be brought out by a major publisher, not sure if that will ever be possible though. Her testimony was a powerful one and deserves to be heard by more people, she was also very passionate about the book wrote it all herself, selected the photos, etc. I'm sure the Celebration will be a wonderful and fitting tribute!

[Edited 2/18/16 11:49am]

Thanks for the info. I'm sure the book will get re-distributed soon. I have it and it's not an easy read but I guarantee there isn't any other book quite like it in the history of publishing.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

It's sad. Vanity became an icon, but Denise Matthews was a graceful soul. Rest peacefully.

RIP Denise Matthews. I loved Vanity as a ten year old boy and thought she was the hotness. As was their song Nasty Girl. I loved that track before I even learnt about Prince and his music, and him being the mastermind behind Vanity. Such a shame she died at such a young age.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I hope Universal will finally come to their senses and reissue her two Motown albums on CD or at least digitally. From the incredible response over her death, it proves she still has quite a fanbase.

Very sad. It's a shame that her health periodically suffered during her last 22 years of life. I had the chance to speak to her once several years ago on the phone after I had asked about her book. She was very kind. I also read comments online from numerous fans over the years that she was also very nice back when she was Vanity.

If any of the posters here had ever met her, I'd love to hear what she was like in person etc.

Something about this situation sounds off to me. She said that she was ready to go home and then dies two days later. Her family should request an autopsy to be sure that she died of natural causes, side effects from medications or something else? I think that there is more to this story.

People can sometimes get a sense of the end I believe.
Almost like she was holding it back a bit.
I know people who for some reason they were able to hold on until certain family or friends came to see them, and they let go

I read online that she was sexually abused when she was a kid by her father. That would explain why she used drugs. Alot of people use alcohol or drugs to try stop their pain. Drug and alcohol abuse can also be genetic.

There's no doubt about it. That happened with a dear friend of mine who died suddenly last year. I ran into her by chance unexpectedly one day and we had an extraordinary conversation, hugged, and said "I love you" at the end of it...as if we weren't going to meet again. The next week, she was gone.
