I've said this before about Prince sharing the stage. When it was Wendy & Lisa or any other scantily clad protege nobody cared. I think the problem people have with Shelby is she's not some 90 pound nymphet who has to be half naked to belong on stage. She is a real woman with real talent and it intimidates Princes fans. We've all become used to seeing his women as disposable when the next project begins but Shelby has lasted for quite some time now. Tamar for all of her considerable vocal ability didn't last long. I think Tamar got accepted because she's a sexy younger woman, something the masses can accept easily(it also helped that she could actually sing). Princeobviously has chosen to put substance over style with his choice of back up singers now. the three ladies are capable vocalists all with their own fans and followings. Prince sees them as equals to share his stage and be forefront at the shows. Maybe we should let him decide who get to shine on his stage while we just sit back and enjoy the show.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I don't necessarilly agree with you. I do agree that she is a "real woman" with "real talent," but for me, I'm not a fan of her voice. Nothing against her, she's just not my cup of tea. I would prefer her not to sing lead vocals, but if Prince likes it, I can live with it.

Personally, I think Shelby J is a distraction. Shelby can sing, no doubt about it, but that doesn't make her a good fit in Prince's band. What the hell does being a "real woman" have to do with anything? Shelby would make a good opening act, but as far as singing lead and having a prominent role in the band, leaves a lot to be desired. Rosie Gaines, is much more talented than Shelby J as a vocalist. For the record it has nothing to do with her complexion, bald head etc. for me. She's just not my cup of tea. But like all Prince bands they come and go, and I'm counting the days u'til he ditches, Shelby and goes back to a stripped down sound with him only singing.

Am I the only one who thinks Rosie Gaines was "just okay"?

Don't get me wrong- I liked her well enough, but I keep reading these comparisons to Rosie.

I bought her solo album and only played it twice... shrug

The accusations of "hating" don't come from people who just don't find Shelby's singing their "cup of tea". It comes (for me) from people who complain about her being allowed to duet with Prince or to sing solo. AND definitely from those people who think her (lack of) hair or body type have anything to do with her talent.

BTW: Shelby is not as big as people think she is. She wears 6" heels.

This.

Rosie was not my cup of tea at all. But she did what Prince hired her to do, so the issue is with Prince's direction.

Exactly. Seems like it's Rosie Gaines' fans mad because they want Rosie back or either just fans beeyotching over something they have absolutely no control over, like wishing Prince sings personally to or for them.lol

whatever either way it goes i dont hate shelby i think she is a great singer i have enjoyed watching her do her think but i do think rosie is the best of them all but hate is too strong of a word 4 anybody having seen her in concert 3 times i think she blend in well i dont think she overshadow prince or anybody else. this is prince we talkin about a man that dont let nothing happen unless he said so on his stage so whatever shelby doing trust its cuz prince wants her up there

Shelby personfies the what I dont liek about a Prince concert thes days: to much of other people who are not Prince. In the golden age, Prince was center stage all the time. I understand that the more recent incarnations of the NPG could all smoke the REvolution on its best day. And I genuinely loved the Musicology and One Nite ALone tours where band memebers go to stretch out a bit. But this calling everyone onstage to party while back up singers run the show got old to me a few years ago. It makes it look like Prince is doing the rope a dope like an aging Ali did to cover up his age and declining stamina. That all may not be true but loud, bald-headed Shelby with those linebacker thighs doing 3 and 4 songs in a row is too much for anything other than a Shelby concert - and SHelby isnt filling an arena for 21 nights even in her country ass hometown.

IN fact, he could just shorten the show if needed as long as I wouldnt have to endure 25 minutes of unattractive freaks from the audience trying to get their moment onstage with Prince.

cover up his age and decling stamina? are you fucking kidding me? the man performs for like 5 hours, doing 6 encores more than any other performing artist HALF his age (no artist even does AFTER SHOWS) and he's trying to cover something up? get the bleep out of here!

Your personal attacks on Shelby are soo out of line, you are clearly HATING, Shelby is on stage every night with Prince and there is nothing YOU can do about it smile

Unattactive freaks on stages--- haaaa you sound so bitter, havent been on stage yet huh? lol

country ass hometown? jealous she got tons of press and great reception huh? well YOU cant change that either smile

Constructive criticism is one thing, personal attacks are another.

Its shows alot about an artists character, especially a LEGEND like Prince when they open THEIR stage to another artist and help build that artists career. Alot of artists at labels wont even share a stage with their labelmates.

You guys are turning something so generous into a digital attack on someone who is just pursuing her dream.

GET OVER IT or quite simply stay yo asses at home if you dont like the show wink

Shelby is very talented.

I loved it when she shared the stage with Martin Luther and they tore the place up. That said, when I go 2 a Prince concert, I don't want 2 hear Shelby on lead vocals so I understand what people are saying. At the same time, Prince reserves the right 2 showcase any of his band members the way that he sees fit at any particular show.

Never said Prince was covering his age and declining stamina - if you really read, you will see I was referring to Ali. I have been a Prince fan since day one and I have never faultered. I have seen him live since 1981. I have seen 2 concerts adn 2 aftershows in 2 consecutive nights where Prince played over 2 hours at each gig - without turning the stage over to backup people. I am going to stand on a Prince show being better with as much Prince as possible - it only makes sense. I speak from some personal first hand insight and I made an obsevation about the live show as it is today. I didnt attack Shelby J or Prince. But if you need applause for unwarranted hostility, help yourself - there are plenty here who don't bother to actually read as well.

cover up his age and decling stamina? are you fucking kidding me? the man performs for like 5 hours, doing 6 encores more than any other performing artist HALF his age (no artist even does AFTER SHOWS) and he's trying to cover something up? get the bleep out of here!

I dont need applause, nor was I looking for any. Maybe you should RE-READ your post, you did indeed attack both Prince and Shelby or maybe all your negativity clouded your vision? anywho, no need for us to go back and forth. Its easier to agree to disagree. Glad to hear you're a long time Prince fan. Of course everyone wants more Prince lol but the personal attacks werent called for. Lets support him and his team as much as possible ok? hug Prince and the NPG are good people who just want to have a good time. thumbs up!

This is what we already know for a fact.

Prince's Welcome 2 America Tour will more often have opening acts.

The NPG line up is firm (at least until this tour is over) that includes the 3 back up singers.

Prince likes to showcase his back up singers on lead vocals from time to time.

None of this is a surprise to anyone on this or any other Prince fan site.

Now we can determine the following from here on in regarding future performances on this tour.

If these above mentioned items are a deal breaker for you then maybe you should not attend this concert.

Regardless of the fact that you may spend $25 or $1500 the show is what it is going to be with or without you in attendance.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

The person who started this thread needs to do some serious introspection. I don't know how old some of you are, but the title of this thread and some of the comments in support of it are juvenile, mean-spirited and just plain ignorant. Some of you need to get the chip off your shoulders before it buries you.

If you don't like Shelby or the fact that Prince shares his stage with her, then as others have stated - stay home. Who is forcing you to attend these concerts or watch the live performances? You're an adult - or at least you are supposed to be one, so act like it.

perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

So please explain people loving the hell out of Boni or Rosie? And Wendy or Lisa never got the stage time that Shelby gets, so that comparison is dead right there. Your argument's invalid just based off of these two points alone.

I agree - the comparison is almost completely pointless...but it gets Wendy and Lisa into the conversation which I am sure was a primary reason for posting it.
