I told Leonard Nimoy, ‘Look, I used to have a mohawk, and I’ll dress the part—you won’t recognize me.’ Leonard said, ‘Huh, really,’ in that deep, basso profondo way. I couldn’t tell if he thought it was a stupid idea.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Star Trek

Image result for happy 50th anniversary star trek

/

On September 8, 1966, exactly 50 years ago today, the very first episode of Star Trek aired on television. More than just science fiction, it dared to imagine a future for humanity where it had moved past war, inequality, and poverty, replacing them with tolerance, exploration, and hope. And it’s not an exaggeration to say that Star Trek changed the world.

.

Star Trek has had many incarnations over the years—there have been six television shows, 726 total episodes, 13 movies, and one reboot—but its primary mission has stayed the same. The result is a series that won countless awards (31 Emmys!) but has also fostered a massive fandom that includes actors, politicians, and more. It’s a show that created and made famous many of the tropes that science fiction uses all the time now. It’s a series so influential that an actual spacecraft was named after the fictional starshipEnterprise. Scientists have spent years working to turn the fake technology seen in the series into a reality. President Barack Obama is a fan.

.

On-screen, it helped popularize diversity in popular entertainment. It made all its viewers feel included and inspired. A beautiful example is Leslie Jones telling the story of seeing Whoopi Goldberg on television for the first time and being so thrilled to see someone who looked like her. And that connects back to Goldberg, when she saw Uhura on Star Trek at age nine. “I looked at it and I went screaming through the house,” she said, “‘Come here, mom, everybody, come quick, come quick, there’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!’ I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be.”

.

It’s a show so ground-breaking that it gets credit for things it wasn’t even the first to do. Kirk and Uhura’s kiss wasn’t the first scripted interracial kiss on television, but everyone thinks it is. But that myth is still part of the influence of Star Trek, and it’s a myth easy to believe because of how hard Star Trek likes to push the boundaries, to (boldly) go whether other series and movies so seldom do, to reveal what humanity would look like at its most accepting, its most optimistic, and its most noble.

.

It seems impossible now, but back in 1966, the original Star Trek was not an easy sell—it had two pilots and a major cast change before going on the air—and it was canceled after three seasons, due to low ratings. But thanks to syndication, a loyal fandom arose, one that has only grown over the last five decades. Now it’s an institution. And it’s an institution that will continue, as the series finally returns to TV next year with Bryan Fuller’s highly anticipatedStar Trek: Discovery.

.

Here’s to you, Star Trek. And here’s to the next 50 years.

I'm rewatching TNG now. For the 80s the tones are warm, they look weird now, but then it was warm and opened, no switches and levers everything was touchscreen and the computer had a nice familar voice. I guess this one started out with that too. I enjoyed the heck out of the 1st one, I even got a kick out of the 2nd one, but this one I just feel bleh about. I'd of given it a 2 in my rating but it's ST so I gave it a .5 more for posterity. It's keeping the franchise alive so that's important.

Well it was more of a concept. They wanted a "home" look because now they have families (children) on the Enterprise. They showed more of families during season 1 but toned it down through out the rest of the series. I guess fans hated the Wesly Crusher character so no more showing kids. Well the Star Trek movies bridges of the 80's are cool.

Well assingment Earth was supposed to be a spin off show from Star Trek that never happened. Maybe they should do it today (and yes it is set in the 60's). Have Misha Collins, Kristen Bell, and Grumpy cat star in it

Okay, I now must hunt down this last episode of Webster, his Star Trek dream episode, with Worf in it. It sounds so stupid.

I'm not talking war geared, thought that's what having a military mind is but the Federation is a very military setup. Their whole chain of command is very military. It's what we know.

Image result for star trek continues embracing the winds

There was a female Captain but that was before the creation of the federation

Image result for captain hernandez star trek

Captain of the NX-02 Columbia, Hernandez met with Trip for dinner, following his transfer from Enterprise to Columbia. She was surprised that Trip accepted the transfer.

In 2154, Columbia aided Enterprise in its efforts to bring Trip over from Columbia to fix the NX-01's warp reactor. A device planted on the reactor prevented Enterprise from traveling below warp five or else the ship would explode.

So the Columbia, at high warp, intercepted Enterprise, got into formation, and linked a cable between the two ships, thus allowing Trip -- while both vessels were at warp -- to travel to Enterprise.

Enterprise is my least favorite, I'm trying to revisit it because it's part of the universe, I've got to understand the tie-ins. Oh that awful opening theme, yuk, you just start out on the wrong foot. I hated a whole season spent on the Xindi, I mean the storyline as a whole was awesome but man it just dragged on and on, it's not like you didn't know that Earth wasn't going to get destroyed, I mean it wasn't a major cliffhanger thing, but folks seem to be all crazy about it. And grrrrr, I guess I have to revisit ST:Beyond, I just don't get it. Well, I guess I get that it was an original story and it tied in the Enterprise series fairly decently. And now I think I understand why, whatshisface went from human, to lizard man, to almost human. I still hate that snow globe, tomorrowland looking inception city.

I thought I had seen episode 1 of YT ST series but I hadn't. I watched it last night. I'm going to go back through them.

Well for some reason the creators of this series seemed lost for some reason, even though this would be the fourth series made after the original. Season one was ok but the writers seemed lost and confused on how Captain Archer should be. Season 2 is the worse season of all the star trek series. Every other episode crew members were being captured and the last half hour was them getting rescued. Season 3 was ok but didn't want a whole year long story. Season 4 was the best. It was what the show was supposed to be, the early days of the federation. The whole Suliban time lord thing didn't work at all. All the other Star Trek series (Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager) were good about giving the whole cast story lines. Reed and especially Hoshi and Mayweather were basically just there in the background. Well I like the theme song they use for the closing credits better than the opening credits.

I wonder if they tried to Americanize it too much, I mean the Federation is American enough, but I think to add that extra, exploring the new frontier American style-ness to it kind of jacked the universal spirit of it. Captain Archer seemed to be fashioned cowboy style, and everything that comes with that style doesn't lend itself to others taking center stage sometimes.

My big beef with the Star Trek: Enterprise TV prequel series is that it started out promising and deteriorated over time. I thought it was pretty humdrum with monotonous characters, except for T'Pol--the female Vulcan--who was a strong and interesting character at the beginning but quickly became too humanlike and emotional. My least like Star Trek series.

Well it is an American show, that's like saying Doctor Who is too British or the power rangers is to Japanese. Reed is from England, Hoshi is from Japan, Mayweather grew up off world, T'Pol and Phlox are aliens (and they showed alot of aliens like the Andorians, Telerites ,Xindi, and Suliban to name a few) so just two Americans with Archer and Tucker. It's American (Earthlings) at this point becacuse there is no Federation of Planets yet. The last episode showed them signing a union of 11 planets (I think 11, maybe 13). "Cowboy style" well that is how the original show was pitched to the network. It stil feels more like exploration.
