One day, when I commit to saving for it, I'm going to London, but that will not be during the Olympics.

Apparently it's going to be replaced with something else but a reduced amount.

Let's not tax the rich, let's screw the poor instead. Typical Tory "values". Wankers.

When I was in London we just happened upon them testing out the lights and such they've added to tower bridge. It was quite a light show for a while, ending with them lowering the olympics rings.

It was pretty cool.

That is beautiful! biggrin

WHEW! They end just in time for NFL pre-season.

U.S. takes home the second most gold (to China) and most medals overall.

Britain finishes fourth or fifth.

I think you should do some research.

The Prime Minister said the Olympics cost 11 Bn, but will bring in 14 Bn.

New report: The Olympics will deliver a £16.5bn boost to the UK economy by 2017 and help create the equivalent of 62,200 jobs.

In theory, it's a short term and long term investment, increasing jobs and generating profit. Which is perfect, as it meets the fundamental macroeconomic objectives: economic growth, employment, and a healthier balance of payments.

Though, it's most likely, all talk. And even if it isn't, the ones who will will really be benefiting are the big businesses.

Research?!!!

In the Org? Ha.

Facts don't let people express their ignorance nearly as well as their emotion does.

Can't really argue against any of that for most of the recent Olympic games. Although each country does make an insane amount of dollars via tourism during the games and is usually left with world class facilities that can be used for decades to come. Still, the cost is too high, for sure.

That being said, I freakin' LOVE the Olympics and will be watching as much as humanly possible.

I just wish it was the Winter Olympics so I could get my Curling fix. boxed lol

Yes, there has been a lot of investment for the transport for IOC members and other big shots.

The millions othe people, Londoners and tourists just have to pay and find a solution for the disfuntioning public transport themselves.

In London all bikes are sold out, because the most reliable and fast transport mode in London is by bike.

Allthough the London people do pay for the Olympics by means of elevated taxes, the fancy new stadiums will not be atainable for any kid or person who isn't rich.

The Olympics are a waist of money, extra stress and a burden for the local people.

I've never read about a positive balance outcome after the Olympics for any country.

Every Olympics since L.A. 1984 has been profitable except for Beijing.

You just haven't been looking for any positive balance outcomes.

They exist.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

No, we aren't. London generates an large amount of England's GDP. We aren't going bankrupt. It will take more than a mere 9B to wipe out London. Not to mention, the Olympics will bring in a profit.

The whole thing is a massive pile of shite, and the sooner it's over and done with the better. I wish I could go and live in a cave somewhere until it was finished, but I suspect I'd somehow still hear about it all day every day there. There are vast numbers of us here who couldn't give the tiniest shit about it.

I went to the Opening Ceremony technical rehearsals on Monday. We got 2 hours of previews so lots of stuff was saved for the night to keep it a surprise, but I felt VERY patriotic coming out of the stadium.

The opening ceremony hasn't even taken place yet, and already the Olympics are a shambles.
