HD Blu-ray: Worth the loot? Now that consumers have had time 2 digest HD and what it has 2 offer. Have u switched from regular DVD's to Blu-ray? Do u still buy DVD's now that u can download everything? How many Bluray's do u own?
I only back action films that I really like on Blu-ray. I own at least 1,000 dvd's but only about 30 blu-rays.

blu-ray is on its way out, because the way of the future is not in having physical discs, but rather digital files that play in an app. But as of right now, nothing is better quality in your home than blu-ray unless you can afford a real digital cinema projection system like a true baller.
HD is the only way for media in terms of resolution. They stopped making SD tv's, and cable tv is slowly phasing out SD programming. Even youtube can get up to 1080p now.
Even indie filmmakers are now more and more shooting in higher than HD format and then downconverting to normal 1080p HD.
As for "worth the loot?"....blu-ray players are much cheaper than what DVD players cost in the same relative time in their consumer lifecycle. Blu-ray movies are dirt cheap used on Amazon, and feature great supplemental materials. I don't think it's about the loot!
4 years into the intro of DVD players into the market, a player still cost more than $300
right now (approx 4 years into mass blu-ray consumer promotion), you can get a Sony blu-ray player for $72.

Have u switched from regular DVD's to Blu-ray?
No, the difference in quality isn't big enough to justify the difference in price. Besides, BluRay is taking so long to replace DVDs that I'm starting to think it won't happen. Maybe it will remain alongside DVDs as an alternative for technophiles until the next thing comes along.
Do u still buy DVD's now that u can download everything?
Yes, for three reasons: I don't approve of piracy, I can find cheap DVDs everywhere (on EBay, ex-rentals etc) and I really like having the cover with artwork etc in my bookshelf.
How many Bluray's do u own?
Two or three, I think. | |

Yes. I don't know how you watch them but if it's in a big screen 46", 55" or bigger DVD's quality is simply horrible
No. I stopped buying vinyl the minute I started buying CDs back in 1988. Stopped buying VHS with my first DVDs and I have stopped buying DVD when I changed to Blu-ray
About 175 so far. I started fast but HDTV (and crisis) makes it not so essential

I have a blu ray disc player, but only one blu ray disc I don't really see a big difference from regular dvd's. Waste of damn money.

Wow, I had never met anyone who had as many players as discs

It costs me $2.95 to rent a blu-ray disc from my local DVD rental store, the same as a regular DVD costs. For the price of cinema tickets to see ONE movie (with the whole family) I can rent 24 movies.
We saw Thor the other night, on the big TV it's spectacular.
For the 32" TV in the bedroom any old DVD or .avi looks fine, blu-ray not justified on such a small TV. If I'm watching a drama or comedy I'll choose normal DVD to watch in the bedroom but if it is sci-fi or something with amazing scenery blu-ray is the way to go
I don't own a single blu-ray disc though, I'm not a collector.

I don't think Blu-rays are going away anytime soon. There's tons of movies, new & old, which are still being released these past few years and look amazing on a HD TV. One example is Tree of Life. The movie might be a chore to get through, but the quality of the picture is immense. I personaly have over a hundred Blu-rays.

I stopped buying DVD's as soon as I bought my first Blu-Ray in 2009. Clearly a difference but I have no plan to replace my DVD's with Blu-Ray just yet. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I know people who refuse to by DVDs now.
I think the quality of blu-ray on a big screen tv is amazing.
Once you roll backwards, it becomes very apparent the difference in quality.
and the sound is better too.
I think DVDs will stick around though, because they're quality is not horrible, and teir file sizes are so much smaller.
Physical media's days are numbered though I think.
In 10 to 15 years time, storage capacity on all our devices will be staggering. Better-than-blue-ray is looming.
I think this is going to really change porn though. It's already expensive enough for porn stars who have their breasts augmented on DVD, because so much detail shows up, that many have had to try to correct their scars, etc.
Theyre going to need to use a form of that anti-pixilation technology they use when transfering old 'film' DVDs over to blu-ray, on porn stars soon.
Don't get me wrong--porn will survive this. It just won't be the same.

if it's a good film I'll get the Blu Ray version, much better...
if it's some crap 70's/80's b movie horror (guilty pleasure thing) then a dvd for a couple of quid is plenty good enough. Hamburger, Hot Dog, Root Beer, Pussy

My laptop has a Blu-ray drive.
I rarely watch movies or other stuff that you'd get on disc. When I do, I rent from iTunes.
I think that pretty much covers it.

That is not how a DVD looks on my screen. Unless it's a small detail that's been magnified a great deal, but when do I ever magnify details? I watch the whole screen and it looks fine to me.

Those are small sections of the screen, but it shows how much better blu-ray is. and blu-ray is cheaper than DVD was at the same place in it's consumer lifecycle. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Not all Blu-ray transfers look great. A couple in my collection like Total Recall, and Sleepy Hallow look no better then their DVD counterparts. That said, some Blu-Ray transfers look mind boggling. If you like old movies, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is one example.

Perhaps, but they're still more expensive than DVD at present and I can barely tell the difference in quality when I watch the whole screen (as people always do when they watch movies). Obviously some people can tell a difference even then and they're very welcome to spend the extra bucks if they want. In fact the more of them there are, the fewer will buy DVDs which will bring the DVD price down even further. So it's a win-win.

Have u switched from regular DVD's to Blu-ray?
For the most part yes. I still have my DVDs of films that have not been released on blu-ray, but I won't buy new movies on DVD anymore.
Do u still buy DVD's now that u can download everything?
I don't download. I don't do streaming either. The picture quality isn't as good yet for PPV/streaming as blu-ray. It's very clear to me when watching the HD broadcast of Mad Men for example that it isn't as crisp as when I watch the same episodes again on blu-ray. How some people can't see the drastic difference between picture quality of blu-rays and DVDs when I can see a difference between blu-rays and HD broadcasts, I don't understand. Maybe my eyesight is just very very good.
How many Bluray's do u own?
Around 150. My collection is constantly growing.

it's not that they can't see the difference it's probably that they really don't CARE that much
I watch shitty downloads that are all pixellated and the blacks look weird but it doesn't bother me

I agree, and as far as streaming, Netflix has tons of obscure films on streaming only. Pre code, public domain Film Noir stuff for example. One thing that frustrates me (& my pocketbook) about Blu-ray movies are, that there are certain titles that are only available in Europe like The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive, The Pianist, etc. and you have to purchase a mult-regional player to view them here in the U.S. I guess it goes both ways for the Europeans [Edited 2/14/12 15:23pm]
