I'm just being contrary. Every so often, there's a book or film that comes along that everyone's all excited about and I go bored just on GP.

For example, I've never seen ET. lol

I would pick on you for that, but I've never seen The Wizard of Oz. So there! razz

I've never seen a John Wayne movie, an Elvis movie, or a Disney movie (well, except for The Rescuers). It wasn't on principle; it just worked out that way. But now I kind of want to hold to it.

falloff I just saw that Cher is pissed that her god-awful song from Burlesque didn't get nominated for an Oscar. Doesn't she realize how horrible that song is?

I will say 5 Gypsies Tramps and Thieves tonight in hopes of saving you from a Cher-related sequin-y death for saying that. pray

The only Disney movie you've ever seen is The Rescuers? eek

Haven't you seen any of the Pixar films? Or the Pirates of The Caribbean movies?

Yeah, sorry; I meant the Disney animated ones. Is Pixar part of Disney? And is Up a Pixar movie? Because I loved that one immensely. But I don't think I've seen many Pixar movies.

No, Disney and Pixar are completely separate.

rolleyes have you seen the original True Grit? or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance? or The Searchers? or Red River?

Jeff Bridges is an amazing actor, but here he has basically copied the Wayne's mannerisms of the original True Grit, a carbon copy actually... watch both movies, and then compare

I don't know if the Academy has nominated Jeff in order to bring back Wayne to the consciousness of modern viewers, as some sort of 21th Century homage, ... who knows shrug

I loved The Kids Are All Right, but it's not Oscar-worthy, imo. It's just a very good, nice, pleasant film to watch that I enjoyed very much (I know you didn't like it that much). It bugs me when good films get overblown. Inception was that way to me too; awesome visuals and a visionary step in many ways, but it was a full-on mess o' gobbledygook as far as story goes. And why reward that?

Yeah, I'm there with you on Inception.

I made the mistake of having two glasses of wine before I turned on Inception, and eventually I really had to just let it go and turn it off. Only interesting thing I got out of it was that the following week I kept having dreams inside of dreams hrmph

Aww guys really??? Come on! pout

How can you say it was a mess? What didn't you get? It's a great plot, really well thought out and really strong performances too. Hugely ambitious for a director of Nolan's stature too. How many big name director's take such a risk on a Hollywood big budget movie these days? Even if you couldn't cope with the concept, surely you gotta respect the originality and style? In my opinion it's a far superior movie to most of the chaff on that list!

I didn't feel that way at all, in fact i loved how they tied it up so neatly! From the use of time within the dreams to the spinning top at the end. So clever and well thought through. i've seen it 3 times and each time you can find more in the movie. But i'm a big Lynch fan and i love films that make me think and come out the movie scratching my head a bit. i appreciate that not everyone wants that at the cinema.

If anyone still cares at all and has any questions about it - i'm happy to clear up for you! lol

I'm not even sure what my questions would be about it at this point. While watching the movie, I eventually just decided that I would go with it and stop trying to make sense of it. The movie has a lot of "This is true because we say it's true" logic to it. "This dream will settle this guy's father issues because we say it will." I'm fine with that, but I didn't know where to stop. By the time they were going in dreams within dreams within dreams within dreams, and some people could go but some people couldn't because someone said they couldn't, and I couldn't tell if they were in the architect's head or somebody else's head...it just got to be too much to try to follow.

I enjoyed it a ton for what it was, though. And it was a lot of fun to talk about afterward.

Yeah, it's like with anything else, everyone has different tastes.wink

Out of the nominees I would have picked Black Swan because I was the most overall satisfied with. I loved everything from Portman's over-the-top performance, to the cinematography and direction, to the whole artistry of it.
But beside that, my favorite movie this year was probably Winter's Bone.

Point taken about the film's logic and decisions that made up the world. A couple of friends felt the same way; that it was difficult to totally invest in so many 'rules'. I think you have to go into it totally surrendering to those parameters and allow for the artistic licence, but if you struggle keeping the thread then it's easy to feel kinda cheated. i know what you mean, i struggled for the same reason with film's like Inland Empire and Synecdoche. If you can manage it, i recommend another viewing, as now you're aware of the writers' choices, you may find those things easier to accept.

Or you could just watch porn instead? wink

Not seen Winter's Bone as it's not been released over here yet, but shall keep my eyes peeled upon your recommendation sir.

Black Swan was a strange one for me. i thought it was good, directed well, scenes were good and Portman was good - and thought Babs was amazing as her mum and the best thing in it. Totally criminal that she wasn't nominated for best supporting actress aswell!

But it kinda left me feeling a bit, well...meh. It didn't really move me and i didn't really care for the characters enough. Also, i didn't feel there was enough of a journey within the plot. You kinda know where the film's going from the first few minutes.

When you look at his earlier films like "Pi" and the amazing "Requiem for a Dream", i feel Aronofsky's kinda lost his bravery and become swallowed up in the mainstream Hollywood film-making style. Saying that, the masturbation scene was amazing. And not (just) for pervy reasons, but the the shock of her mum being in the room - it was just awesomely done and really believable.

I keep forgetting to make that point! Especially with folk talkin about Mila Kunis getting snubbed.
How the hell did they pass Babs up?? confused

I think it's kind of a burden good directors (especially those who are kind of outside the box in earlier work) have to bare that if they step out of that so-outside-mainstream style they will suddenly be dubbed as "losing bravery" or artistry.

To me, this is the story he wanted to tell this go-round and he told it excellently. It was just different from his other work.

oh and The Quiet Man!! I forgot that one! One of the best films of the Wayne/Ford combo nod cool It's been ages since I watched it though...

I really want Jennifer Lawrence to win. She was amazing. But I'll be almost equally happy if Michelle Williams gets it, because she is probably the best American actress of her generation, and she deserves to be recognized. For actor, I'm pretty sure it's Colin Firth's year.

I think it's a shame Nolan wasn't nominated for director, mostly because I think he deserves it for directing that movie, which entailed a huge vision. But I don't think Inception was the best picture by any means, so I'd much rather have it not be nominated in that category.

I want Lawrence or Portman for actress.

I reeeeeeeeally don't want Annette to win this year even though I thought she did a lovely job.

It will feel like one of those "It's her time" awards to me if she does.

I don't know, I'm kinda feeling Annette's anal retentive type A personality angry lesbian haircut wearing head of household in "The Kids..." I'm watching "Winter's Bones" right now and I don't know if it's because I overate at lunch, but it's making me sleepy. The barn scene's kinda good, though hmmm

I thought Annette was excellent, don't get me wrong, I just don't think it compares to the other two. But I'm afraid she's reaching that whole "awww...it's about time we give her something" point. I hope that doesn't give her the edge. sigh

Umm, I have spent nearly 20 years as a devotee to Carl Jung, studying his work on how dreams and other entrees to the subconscious are related to the thought process of the human psyche, so frankly it's not about not getting it or if I can "cope with the concept" of Inception . It simply bored me and couldn't hold my attention after two glasses of Shiraz. There are going to be days when every movie is simply not for everybody. martini
