help! need tattoo advice~ added pics This Saturday I have to go back to the tattoo shop to get the 2nd part of my "side" tattoo done. This tattoo is on my right side hip and ribcage/ stomach.
The first session, which was 2 hours was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I assumed since I had a bit of belly fat that it wouldn't be too bad....WRONG!! Pops (my cutie tattoo artist) said I didn't have as much of a tummy as I thought and that I was gonna feel it either way. For 2 long hours I layed on my back, looking up and the ceiling and stayed silent. All along screaming inside as loud as I could! I'm scared, the feeling of the needle hitting my ribs is well...I'm sure you get the picture. Has anyone ever heard of a natural numbing creme or tablet that I could try? I cant back out, I'm not a wuss, but damn, the ribcage is way too sensitive. [Edited 5/11/09 15:40pm] [Edited 5/23/09 10:04am] Say it's just a dream...

Wow. You're much braver than I am. I only have a tiny one and I was about to die while getting it.
This should be interesting b/c I'd like to know the answer myself!

Before I got mine I asked my husband at the time if it hurt and he told me no. Then after I was done he told me he lied cause he didn't want to scare me.

Don't know about any creme or tablets, but I have two on my stomach - I kept well away from the ribcage cause there is only so much pain I can handle - although the one I have on my back/neck went over the knobbly bone at the base of the neck which I thought would kill and didn't...It actually felt quite good.
Having someone with you to talk to/distract you helps, my mum was with me when I got my first one and my baby sister was with me for me second - although I could have done without the little cow making me laugh while I was getting it done (my sister, not mum). Hmmm, I haven't been much help, have I? You know what, if you need to scream, Scream. I doubt you will be the first person they have had in their that has. "I know that living with u baby, was sometimes hard...but I'm willing 2 give it another try.
Cause nothing compares....nothing compares 2 u!"

do NOT using numbing cream (like Emla or Amitop, or lidocaine or prilocaine), they cause your skin to be be too moist and stretchy. Not what you want your artist to be working with if you are wanting a quality tattoo. Some of the ingredients don't react well with the ink and pushing both under skin at the same time will affect your healing.
Just deal with the pain. I know it hurts, but it's part of the process. If you can't take it, don't get the tattoo.

Not too sure about any effective numbing creams babe, as for pills Valium may assist but there are other methods I use when I'm being inked. Some illegal, some non illegal. Will have to orgnote you.

I asked my tattooist about it, and he said that they also make the skin more swollen, so the tattoo may not come out right. Like you said, just gotta do it. I got my first a couple of weeks ago in the back of my neck and it hurt a lot. I meditated which helped a lot. Concentrating on something else than the pain is usefull if you can manage it. Post pics when you're done!! I wanna see!! Have a good one! Allow me to introduce: Ms. Onder and Mrs. Donk! (o)(o)

Your tattoo artist should have a numbing cream...most have them now. I can't remember what it's called though.
Muscle relaxers work well too...better than pain pills. Get a xanax bar or something, you won't move! EDIT: It's called LIDOCAINE. Ask your cutie tattoo artist if he has any. [Edited 5/12/09 6:42am]

Take painkillers an hour before you go (maybe a mixture of a paracetamol and ibuprofen would work best). Distraction could also help I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

Just deal with the pain. I know it hurts, but it's part of the process. If you can't take it, don't get the tattoo. I have no tats, but this is also the advice that I've heard. Topical painkillers apparently can effect the skin in such a way that the area isn't primo for the process. And I know some tattoo artists that altogether refuse to tattoo a person who has taken a general analgesic agent, including (and maybe especially) alcohol. I don't know if there is a physical purpose aside from mere principle or wanting to ensure the client is sober enough to make such a permanent decision, though. The artists have simply said that pain is part of the adult commitment to get a tat. I suppose it's good to hear some artists think otherwise. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I forgot that lidocaine messes with the ink...I've never asked for it.
Muscle relaxers are the way to go, kid! You're so mellow you don't move...it still hurts but at least you won't be all tense. I used to just go in extremely hung over, the tattooing would numb the headache.

I'm absolutely with Carrie. I have the most unhealthy fear of needles you could imagine. Xanax and Soma a half hour before they start is like heaven in a pill.

I usually just pop a few extra strength Tylenol an hour or so ahead of time and get on with it, and my biggest tattoo took 3 hours, plus touch ups. But everyone has different levels or pain tolerance. Hope you find something that work for you. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Up here it's illegal to tattoo someone who's been drinking, most likely because of the hindered decision-making ability. Alcohol does thin out the blood though, so I imagine that can't be doing good things to any piece of artwork you might want to get. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I might be getting my first soon. I can't stand pain, but I go for waxing and threading often anyways, so it'll be about the same, only a little worse. I wish I could take an anasthetic and be asleep during it so I don't feel a thing, but they don't do that at all.
