amorbella said: This Saturday I have to go back to the tattoo shop to get the 2nd part of my "side" tattoo done. This tattoo is on my right side hip and ribcage/ stomach.
The first session, which was 2 hours was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I assumed since I had a bit of belly fat that it wouldn't be too bad....WRONG!! Pops (my cutie tattoo artist) said I didn't have as much of a tummy as I thought and that I was gonna feel it either way. For 2 long hours I layed on my back, looking up and the ceiling and stayed silent. All along screaming inside as loud as I could! I'm scared, the feeling of the needle hitting my ribs is well...I'm sure you get the picture. Has anyone ever heard of a natural numbing creme or tablet that I could try? I cant back out, I'm not a wuss, but damn, the ribcage is way too sensitive. [Edited 5/11/09 15:40pm] Yet one more reason, I will never get a tattoo...

JerseyKRS said: do NOT using numbing cream (like Emla or Amitop, or lidocaine or prilocaine), they cause your skin to be be too moist and stretchy. Not what you want your artist to be working with if you are wanting a quality tattoo. Some of the ingredients don't react well with the ink and pushing both under skin at the same time will affect your healing.
Just deal with the pain. I know it hurts, but it's part of the process. If you can't take it, don't get the tattoo. This is the best advice. Suck it up and deal with the pain or don't get the tatts. I have 12 and they all hurt like hell(the one on my chest hurt the most), but it's what I wanted.

Sure, it's uncomfortable, but I've felt worse pain after stubbing my toe. It's all about the way your body handles and reacts to pain. For some people being tattooed will hurt like nothing else, and for others it's just kind iof unpleasant. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

For some people being tattooed will hurt like nothing else, and for others it's just kind iof unpleasant. I've been inked many times from behind the ear, on the wrist, to the lower back and across my hips, but when I started my last tattoo, which again started on the right side of my stomach and hip i knew I was in for some PAIN. The stomach was a different kind of pain, the hip, well it was pain, but nothing I couldn't handle and then the ribcage.....OOOHH WEEE nothing I have ever felt before...I think I have a high tolerance, but damn. The first session I had very little work done on the ribs..outline only. Saturday's session will be more outline and fill in... Would have never started if I didn't think I could handle it. But alittle help is always better Say it's just a dream...

Orajel. LOL But isn't there some dick cream that makes men more numb to last longer? I don't see why it wouldn't work on your body. BUT it's still a needle and still penetrates (uh huh huh huh) your skin so I don't know how much it'd help.

Depends where you get it, too. I have one on my bicep. Barely felt a thing. It was like a really stiff hair brush rubbing on my skin.

JerseyKRS said: Lammastide said: I have no tats, but this is also the advice that I've heard. Topical painkillers apparently can effect the skin in such a way that the area isn't primo for the process. And I know some tattoo artists that altogether refuse to tattoo a person who has taken a general analgesic agent, including (and maybe especially) alcohol. I don't know if there is a physical purpose aside from mere principle or wanting to ensure the client is sober enough to make such a permanent decision, though. The artists have simply said that pain is part of the adult commitment to get a tat. I suppose it's good to hear some artists think otherwise. I've heard that too much alcohol promotes excessive bleeding. Whether this is true or not, I have no idea. Blood rises to the surface when you are drunk and could bleed to death.

Location makes a big difference, but so does the skill of the artist. The only tattoo of mine that I found really unpleasant is the one on the back of my neck. I let an apprentice do it and since she's still learning she had a bit of a heavy touch. Ouch. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Only have two tattoos right now. would love to get more. i never had any problems with my tattoos though. The first was across my upper back and i actually felt it tingled a little. No real pain or discomfort. The second tattoo was a little worse. I went to a different artist (my first artist left town....as did the second one as well) and he seemed to push a little harder or something because nearly the entire tattoo was not comfortable but not painful at the same time. I direly want more tattoos, but I'm broker than a broke thing right now. I finally figured out what I want to do with the big empty star on my back. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

The best advice I can give anyone considering tattoos or piercings is...DON'T DO IT!!!!!
They detract from the natural beauty of the human body.
