BEYONCÉ IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN JANET JACKSON: CURRENT TICKET SALES PROVE IT

DARYL DEINO

The myth that Beyoncé owes her career to Janet Jackson is false. While Janet may have some influence on Beyoncé, megastars such as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and even Donna Summer had far more influence on today’s biggest star. Janet Jackson was a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s and 1990s, but not so much these days.

While Janet Jackson is a great entertainer who has helped produce some excellent albums (including her latest album Unbreakable), she is not much beyond an entertainer. She isn’t a true vocalist or musician. Her high school cheerleader dance moves are entertaining, but that doesn’t make her a professional dancer — at least not in the way Beyoncé is. Janet Jackson is a decent actress, and one hopes that she will be offered some decent movie roles in the future.

image: http://cdn.inquisitr.com/...yonce2.jpg

Beyoncé Janet JacksonBeyoncé is a legend. Janet Jackson is the sister of a legend. [Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images]On the other hand, Beyoncé is a multiple threat: a singer, dancer, and a musician. Unlike Janet and other pop stars, Beyoncé has a lot of expertise in each category; she isn’t just a “Jack of all Trades.” However, the verdict is still out on Bey as an actress.

While Janet Jackson gets c0-writing credits on her songs, Beyoncé, at least according to her producers and many in the record industry, helps shape her songs in a way that most pop stars don’t. It’s not fair to say that Beyoncé isn’t a musician since we don’t see her play any instruments. She has an ear for what sounds right, what touches people, and most importantly, what appeals to music listeners.

Perhaps the biggest indicator of where both artists stand is current concert ticket sales, which are rumored to be poor for Janet Jackson. Billboard has the latest news on what appears to be a given when it comes to Jackson these days — cancelled concert dates.

“Less than three months after postponing numerous Unbreakable Tour dates to undergo surgery, Janet Jackson has reportedly canceled those rescheduled European tour dates.”

Billboard adds that Ticketmaster emailed sources to let them know they are refunding all ticket sales for Janet’s European dates. The dates were postponed already due to a mystery illness that Janet Jackson supposedly had. Many suspect that Ms. Jackson has come down with a nasty case of poor ticket sales, although nobody knows for sure. Of course, if Janet Jackson really is sick, then these people will surely feel bad.

Janet Jackson UnbreakableJanet Jackson is rumored to be suffering from poor ticket sales. [Photo by Alexander Tamargo/Getty Images]Billboard has been posting their Current Boxscore chart every week. About half of the shows Janet Jackson has played haven’t been reported. Out of the ones that did, shows in Grand Rapids, MI (8,621/9,102); Orlando, FL (8,906/9,067); Tampa FL (7,702/8,811); and Minneapolis, MN (8,879/10,395) did not sell out. Those numbers aren’t awful, but if these were reported and others weren’t, one has a right to wonder how low attendance numbers could have been. Janet’s unreported Calgary show at the Calgary Saddledome had an attendance of 8,500, according to the Calgary Herald — a number far lower than the 19,000 listed capacity for the venue. It’s also important to note that the seating capacity listed at many of Janet Jackson’s shows is far less than what the venues usually hold. For example, the capacity for the Amway Center in Tampa is 17,461. A concert usually holds a little bit less than the total capacity, but the 8,811 capacity figure that was given (and that Janet couldn’t fill) could raise some questions.

Beyoncé, on the other hand, is double-booking stadium shows in such cities as Chicago and New York City. According to Billboard, Bey is close to selling out single stadium dates in such cities as Los Angeles, Boston, San Diego, Miami, and others. That’s something Janet Jackson could only dream of and also something Jackson hasn’t been able to do her entire career.

These days, Janet Jackson employs questionable tactics, such as giving away free albums with concert t-shirts and even Uber ride giveaways, in order to give an illusion that she’s selling records. Beyoncé sells albums just by existing. History will show that Beyoncé revolutionized the music industry while releasing groundbreaking records. Janet Jackson should be recognized for her contributions as well, but they are nothing compared to Beyoncé’s.

This article is full of lies! Janet's Rhythm Nation tour & album alone outsold Beyonce's whole catalog & tours!

Janet is getting bashed all over social media because of this she seriously needs to release a statement. I get that she is private but you can't be private when you have fans traveling, scheduling hotesl and rearranging their life to see you in concert. Thats inconsiderate of their time and money. She has to make a statement or she will lose some of her Euro/UK fans.

Darren from Janet Love, and who is a reliable source due his connections to the media, has tweeted out that it was Live Nation who forced the cancellation, not Janet or Janet's team. One explanation of why we haven't heard from Janet and her team is due to the "significant legal and financial implications from the cancellation." He mentioned that Janet had been rehearsing in Covent Garden over the last few weeks. As the Dubai gig is not sponsored through Live Nation, it is still scheduled to proceed. confused

Can a sponsor like Live Nation just cancel an artist's tour like that? eek If so, what would be the reason? I'm not familiar with touring contracts and all, but this is the first time I've heard of a company that's sponsoring a tour, force a cancellation. confused confused confused

Well. A sponsor can't. But a tourpromoter/producer obviously can. No one wants to loose or risk loosing money. The artist usually gets a guaranteed fee. What is left over after the fees and all expenses are taken out of the ticketmoney, is the profit of the promoter until a certain amount. If that is higher, the artist gets another cut of the excess money. At least that's the way it used to be. Don't know if Live Nation has a different deal.

yeah, what would be the reason for LiveNation to cancel these dates? Poor ticket sales? It seems very rare for them to just cancel an artist's tourdates.Wouldn't it be up to the artist?! Wouldn't any artist have the right to do a concert even if it's not sold out?

This would be a big family tragedy, but would she really cancel all those shows because of it? Seems like she would just reschedule. She was filming a Tyler Perry movie when Michael died, but was able to return to that project.

I think the way she's treated her European fans over the years has been abysmal. At the end of the day, she's got the audience she deserves in Europe, she would never pull half this shit in her home country. Fans still remember her cancelling the European leg of the AFY tour, so her cancelling yet another European leg just feels like adding insult to injury to a lot of fans.

It doesn't really matter if the cancellations were beyond her control this time, the backlash she's facing on social media is just her past tardiness catching up with her unfortunately. At the end of the day she talks a big game about caring about her fans etc, but actions speak louder than words. Look how the European market accepted MJ as one of their own when he toured the continent extensively on the Dangerous and HIStory tours. His US market may have suffered as a result, but only because he wasn't putting himself out there and chose to focus on other markets who embraced him. With Janet, she has tried to have the best of both worlds, trying to sell out venues she really has no business playing in Europe. There is a big world outside of America and I think the laid-back promotional approach to Unbreakable was a terrible idea from the get-go, she needed to re-establish herself in these markets and then perhaps people would've warmed to her again. She can't just put out a record with zero promotion and expect European fans to flock to see her as if it's 1998 all over again.

She doesn't have that same star status as Michael to be able to just disappear and reappear whenever she likes and still have people waiting for her. Of course she will always have her diehards, but they aren't nearly large enough in numbers to fill out multiple arenas dates in major cities across Europe.

Unfornately, I agree with this entire post. After SuperBowl fiasco imo it showed that Janet had more fairweather fans than die hard. During Rock Wit U era she could hardly feel an arena! Its very telling that despite all MJ's controversies, he was able to sell out 50 arena dates, which (I did the math) would have been 1 million tickets sold, IN ONE CITY. Thats incredible! I don't think anybody alive could sell 1 million tickets in just ONE city.

I still think MJ could have sold out in America too but it was smart of him to tour internationally when the controversy began in America. Unlike Janet, he did not play victim. He chose to tour outside of America which made him a even more international star. I don't know if its because MJ experienced more controversy, etc than Janet but IMO he showed way more resilence and strategy when he had to go to plan B when controversies hits. Janet just seems too indifferent and non-reactive when contrversy hits. Even during the 00's decade, Michael still made collector albums, documentaries, anniversary releases, etc he still catered to his fans in some way all through that horrible decade while Janet on the other hand has done.....nothing for her fans. It would have been a risk to tour internationally for her, since she was never a big international star anyway, but it would have been a risk I personally would have taken to save my career. Janet relies to much on the U.S. market/fans (the same feakle market that cost her alot). She should rebrand herself and try to broaden her audiences. Janet just doesnt seem to care at all to me.

I believe this. I believe it has something to do with ticket sells. Not sure why she would book arena dates in those Europe markets without no promotion. Like another poster said, she is not big in Europe to begin with so she had to promote and market herself traditional way. I don't see why she could not book theaters instead if she was not going to promote. Janet is a US based act so she can do that in the US but not outside of it. I also think its not fair to her European fans that she still has not released a statement.

Reading the MJ thing really made me emotional. He was putting fans before himself too much for his own good if you ask me as well, I miss him so much. I love janet and these days I do play her more than mj, but this does confirm she was never big as him in europe though this does not take away from her musical impact at all, and fans used to get mad when I said mj and other artists of their time were much more well known there. I can't recall where in Europe Janet performed during Number Ones, but it would have been smarter booking those venues cause they were a success. I don't agree with some strategies janet's team went with, but I do know that to do anything, you need label backing, and she wasn't pleased with virgin or def jam at all when things were happening. She knew which singles would do well, and side projects she wanted to do, but had contractual obligations, and it seems like she didn't have as much say in it like we want to believe.

I thought the Dubai cup FOLLOWED the European tour. That doesn't look right at all! I wonder what's really going on? Every hour that this goes unaddressed is a lot of time for people to speculate online, which is where this tour is promoted.
