“My observation of this record was not what went into but what was taken away from it,” he says. “This is universally regarded as a very timeless record … When I’m working with a client, I might have an idea of where I think the song should go, but just for good solidarity, so they don’t think you're a dictator, you might want to let them exhaust all their ideas. ‘A/B-ing’ means you try every idea under the sun and then you sit on it and come back to it, and if it sticks you use it; if it doesn’t, you do away with it. On these [unused] tracks are a lot of ideas that I’m shocked they even attempted: There’s theramin tracks, cheesy sirens, overdone disco string arrangements, overdone percussion.”

He plays rejected examples of all of the above, which would have carbon-dated the recording in the late 1970s as vividly as a bushy mustache or a rugby shirt.

“Michael Jackson had a lot of ideas and he probably wanted to use all of them. … I would like to have been there to see Quincy Jones talk Michael Jackson off the ledge. And sometimes Michael did win – Quincy to this day will say that he hated ‘Billie Jean.’ But clearly, underdoing it is the key to success here – understatement is the magic of it.”

Twenty-five years after Michael Jackson’s visionary Bad album and tour left an indelible mark on pop culture, BAD25 takes you back inside the recording sessions, film shoots and sold-out stadiums for an intimate look at the King of Pop’s creative genius. Poignant and candid, Spike Lee directed a documentary that goes beyond paying homage to the record-setting album featuring such iconic songs as “Bad” and “Man In the Mirror.” Using never-seen footage and candid interviews with subjects ranging from Martin Scorsese to Kanye West, Lee chronicles what became not only a watershed moment in Michael Jackson’s growth as an artist but in popular music as well. The New York Times called BAD25 “filled with oh-wow moments,” while Time lauded the film as “an intimate view of a performer at his peak in the intense splendor of creativity.”

One of the CEO recently admitted to negotiating Conrad Murray's rate of pay with him. Not to mention the email where he tells the concert director, Kenny Ortega to remind Conrad Murray who is paying him. I know its early but it doesn't look good for AEG Live right now. not sure if the warrants a new thread:

Promoter grilled about 'smoking gun' e-mail in Michael Jackson death trial

By Alan Duke, CNN
updated 11:29 AM EDT, Thu May 30, 2013

excerpt:

The 'smoking gun'

Panish questioned Gongaware about an e-mail Jackson's lawyers call the "smoking gun," which they argue shows AEG Live executives used Murray's fear of losing his lucrative job as Jackson's personal physician to pressure him to have Jackson ready for rehearsals despite his fragile health.

Show director Kenny Ortega e-mailed Gongaware 11 days before Jackson's death expressing concerns that Murray had kept Jackson from a rehearsal the day before. Ortega also raised his own concerns about Jackson's health. Gongaware testified on Wednesday that he thought Ortega was "overreacting."

His e-mail reply to Ortega read: "We want to remind (Murray) that it is AEG, not MJ, who is paying his salary. We want to remind him what is expected of him." Gongaware, in a video deposition played in court on the first day of the trial, said he could not remember writing the e-mail.

Panish on Wednesday played for jurors a section of Gongaware's deposition, recorded in December, in which Jackson lawyer Kevin Boyle questioned him about what he meant when he wrote to Ortega, "We want to remind him that it is AEG, not MJ, who is paying his salary."

Boyle: "Based on the assumptions that AEG is your company and MJ is Michael Jackson, do you have an understanding of what that means?"

Gongaware: "No, I don't understand it, because we weren't paying his salary."

Boyle: "So why would you write that?"

Gongaware: "I have no idea."

Boyle: "Now, let's go on to the next sentence. When you say 'his salary,' who are you talking about?"

Gongaware: "I don't know."

Boyle: "Oh, but how do you know you weren't paying his salary if you don't know who we're talking about?"

Gongaware: "I don't remember this e-mail."

Boyle: "Didn't you just testify that 'we weren't paying his salary'?"

Gongaware: "AEG?"

Boyle: "Yes. No. You just testified 'we weren't paying his salary.' You just testified to that a few seconds ago, right?"

Gongaware: "I guess."

Boyle: "Well, whose salary were you referring to? Dr. Murray?"

Gongaware: "Yes."

After Gongaware began recalling in court Wednesday what he meant in the e-mail, Panish suggested it may be a case of "repressed memories" where "someone doesn't remember something for three or four years."

"You didn't have any psychotherapy to remember what you wrote here?" Panish asked. "You didn't like get put to sleep --" (Judge Palazuelos injected: "Hypnotized?") "--to see if you remembered this?

"No," Gongaware answered.

Michael Jackson Trial: 5 Newest Developments in the Case Against AEG

Wed, May 29, 2013 2:19 PM EDT

excerpt:http://movies.yahoo.com/n...18840.html

5. The court reviewed a June 2009 meeting held at Jackson's Carolwood home with Michael Jackson, Dr. Murray, AEG CEO/President Randy Phillips, Frank DiLeo (Jackson's former manager) and "This Is It" tour director Kenny Ortega. Gongaware stressed that the meeting was not about Jackson's health, but just to make sure that Dr. Murray had everything he would need to care for Jackson properly. But his testimony during Conrad Murray's criminal trial seem to contradict the statements he made to the court on Tuesday. Gongaware testified at Michael's criminal trial, in Sept. 28, 2011, that "This is It" tour director Kenny Ortega had requested the meeting over concerns about Michael's absences from rehearsal, as well as his health. Additionally, a police report filed after Gongaware was interviewed by Los Angeles Police Department references the meeting, saying that Gongaware told police the main topic of the meeting was "Jackson's overall health - diet, stamina and his weight. Jackson had missed a rehearsal and was thought to be dancing at home. However they discovered he was only watching video. Doctor Murray was receptive to their concerns and indicated he would take care of the situation." When Panish showed the police report on screens in the courtroom, Gongaware flat out denied having said that to police and said, "I think the police have it wrong."

That headline is a bit misleading though, all Paul is admitting to is sending that email that said "We went to remind [Murray] that it is AEG, not MJ, who is paying his salary. We want to remind him what is expected of him." But no contract was ever signed and did they actually ever pay Murray? I vaguely recall at some point Murray was looking to sue AEG because he claimed he never got paid.

Bob Saget, Jeff Probst & Michael Jackson! Katie Couric Reveals Her Best, Bad Date Stories

Katie Couric isn’t shy about kissing — and telling all — about her dead end dates with other celebrities!

The 56-year-old opened up to Howard Stern on Wednesday during an appearance on his SiriusXM radio show, dishing on dates with Bob Saget and Survivor host Jeff Probst and revealing that she once turned down a date with Michael Jackson.

The talk show host explained how the late pop star attempted to organize a date with her through his spiritual advisor Rabbi Shmuley Boteach over a decade ago.

“[He] called my office at The Today Show,” Couric explained. “[He said] ‘Katie, I have a question for you, are you seeing anyone?’ And I thought, this is so beyond creepy that Rabbi Shmuley is hitting on me.

“I’m like ‘Rabbi Shmuley, you have like nine kids, what’s going on here?’ I said ‘Actually, I am [seeing someone].’ Because I had a boyfriend at the time. He said, ‘Oh, that’s a shame… Michael [Jackson] said to me ‘That’s the kind of girl I would like to go out with…’ and I said, ‘Rabbi Shmuley, that’s very flattering but I am seeing someone… will you tell him how flattered I am and what a nice compliment that is?’”

Katie said she believes that the troubled pop star saw her as stability.

“Not to be too psychoanalytical about it, but I think he was looking for a little normalcy possibly and maybe he saw me as kind of a normal person,” she said, adding: “I do regret not having dinner with him. That would have been insane — breaking bread with Michael Jackson!”

I feel bad for Paris, but I think I have some idea of why the family acts like that towards the older two though it's unfortunate for them and would rather not say.

from afar, prince and paris remind me of me and my brother. i am much more reserved with people, esp. those that give me a reason to be suspicious of them, whereas my brother is much more forgiving, if that's the term. i have no reason to understand why paris is seeking out rowe as a "mother figure". even if one makes the argument that a girl her age "needs" her mother, rowe is not that person. no need to recount what i learned from the 2005 trial about her, as well as her friendship with marc shaffel. i think prince knows all of these details, hence his attitude, whereas paris choses to ignore it. it's clear that she has little direction; she's 15 years old and walking around with a shirt advertising whiskey. i'm no prude, but come on...right is right. a 15 year old doesn't need a shirt like that. i think she's just missing the loving attention that used to come from mj, and since he's gone, she's engaging in all sorts of attention seeking behavior. i think i remember reading that she posted on twitter that she loved debbie b/c debbie loved mj. whatever. i have a bridge i'd like to sell her, if she believes that. i don't believe for one minute that debbie has good intentions toward this girl that she unilaterally terminated her parental rights from. the press are being tipped off about her visits and no doubt money is changing hands.

i agree w/you, free. p&p aren't stupid; at this point they must know that their grandmother wasn't "kidnapped", that there was nothing preventing her from contacting them, if she really wanted to. like alpha says, there's probably a really sad reason for the family's overall "loose", hands off "raising" of them. but still, this family expects these kids to get up on the stand at some point, and reveal the most intimate details of their father's life, all for money that they themselves don't need. i don't see a happy future for any of these children.

i'm leaning the same way. aeg keeps saying that they were only the "credit card" that mj was using to pay his employees, but the testimony seems to be revealing that they were more involved in his life in general and this murray situation in particular than merely "rubber stamping" mj's demands. yes, it is early, but i agree that there seems to be more to this lawsuit than i thought. i'm not sure that there is going to be a big payout; i see aeg going really negative on mj to make the jury less sympathetic.

Here is what I think about that kidnapping incident. I was mad at the family for not giving her the phone and those text messages, but there has to be information we don't know, so we don't know the whole context, even if rebbie, janet and randy were being creeps. I do know for a fact Katherine was crying nonstop in interviews shortly before the incident, so maybe this could have been an intervention and they're denying it or not telling the kids, maybe those kids were triggering her or stressing her out. It sounds like they were abandoned, but they could have dealt with their concerns properly so that Paris didn't have to go online and cause an uproar. I don't blame her for doing it, but she wouldn't have had to if she had proper guidance in the first place.
