I don't even remember them saying anything about the actual song, just a short making of the short film. Maybe there's more to see on the extra footage due on the DVD.

WHAT EVER HAPPENS : HE GIVES A NERVOUS SMILE

Deborah Ffrench mentioned that even though only Gil Cang and Geoffrey Williams wrote "Whatever Happens", Michael (along with Teddy Riley and Jasmine Quay) were given songwriting credits due to the publishing rights, among other reasons. Did this same process happen with other songs that MJ received writing credit for, despite having not written or co-written them (either on Invincible or any other record/album)?

Joe: This seems to be much more the case on Invincible, though he usually added some element (whether lyrics, arrangement, or melody) to justify a co-writing credit.

interview with Gil Cang, co-writer of "Whatever Happens":

BOS: Hello Gil, you are the creator of the song "Whatever Happens, can you tell us the story of this track appearing on Michael Jackson's album Invincible released by Epic / xxxx Music in 2001?

Gil Cang: Geoffrey and I wrote the song in my "studio room" in 1999...

BOS: Did you write "Whatever happens" especially for Michael Jackson?

Gil Cang: The song was first offered to artist Mario Vasquez (who was signed to Atlantic and later featured in "American Idol" performing "Whatever Happens" at the audition). He recorded the song, but it was never released.

BOS: What happened next?

Gil Cang: Mario Vasquez went to Teddy Riley's lawyer to see if Teddy would be interested in producing him. It didn't work out, but Teddy thought the song would be great for Michael. He played the song for Michael, and Michael loved it.

BOS: Did you meet Michael Jackson and Teddy Riley? Did you watch the song's evolution from your demo to the final version on Invincible?

Gil Cang: I was not in the studio, and I have not met any of them.

BOS: How was your song selected? Did you suggest any other demos to Riley, and if so, do you remember their names? Did they record any other demos or final versions?

Gil Cang: Riley didn't select anything else. They recorded this song among 200 songs they worked on for Invincible, and they kept it. An honor for me because I've always been a huge fan.

BOS: Do you know if "Whatever Happens" was planned as a single by xxxx Music?

Gil Cang: Unfortunately, the song was never released as a single because the promo campaign was stopped after only 2 songs from the album. "Whatever Happens" was planned as the 4th single from Invincible. But still it is my musical dream come true.

BOS: What is this song about, and what do you think is Michael Jackson's version about?

Gil Cang: I love Michael's version. The song is about a girl who discovers that she is pregnant. People mistake the first sentence of the song, it's actually "He gives a nervous smile," not "He gives another smile." It always makes me nervous! They had it wrong in the album booklet.

BOS: Who sings and plays instruments on the demo?

Gil Cang: Geoffrey Williams sings, and I play instruments.

BOS: Who decided to invite Carlos Santana?

Gil Cang: It was their idea.

BOS: When listening to your demo and the final version on Invincible, there is no real difference in melody, text, etc. Why are Teddy Riley and Michael Jackson credited? Was it a copyright issue, as in "Give us credit, otherwise you will never see your song on the album?"

Gil: Exactly.

BOS: Gil, thank you for this short interview, "Whatever Happens" remains one of the major titles on Invincible and it is very much appreciated by the public.

Gil: Thank you.

Wow I had no idea it was about pregnancy, I thought it was about different dynamics of a rocky relationship, though I guess I got some of that part right since some people do run into conflict upon learning about a pregnancy or have kids for the wrong reasons.

She seems to be okay with MJ taking credit though, so how come Beyonce is given a hard time for getting credit on Irreplaceable for changing one word?

Well, you're not the only one. I' ll probably have to wait for the dvd, too cause it doesn't look that they are going to air it on TV here even though I wrote them asking for it. But yeah, it must suck to know you COULD have seen it tonight. neutral

I LOVED The Documentary tonight about "Bad". It was interesting to hear about how each song on the album was created except for "Just Good Friends". I don't remember them talking about that. Perhaps it will be on the dvd that's coming out next year? I know Spike Lee said what we saw tonight is basically a very heavily edited version of what will be on the dvd. Tonight's special was 64 mins. The DVD will be over 2 hours long which I cannot wait to see.

I have to say that seeing all of those people MJ worked with crying and tearing up toward the end was very sad and surprising. They were crying as if they had just found out he died. It just goes to show how much he of an effect he had on them. I teared up then and when watching MJ perform "Man In The Mirror" at the end. LAWD! That did it for me. That was one of the best performances of that song Ive ever seen. Great stuff.

There will never be another like Michael. I miss him a great deal.

Yeah I'm getting the DVD. They're gonna always show condensed versions on TV. But yeah that performance of "Man in the Mirror" was off the hook. RIP MJ.

Yeah they edited a lot. They basically just went over the singles, so no Just Good Friends or Speed Demon. Also no Mccartney/Beatles catalogue talk(which I'm so glad about, I didn't understand why they had to include that in the documentary in the first place), no Prince discussion, no Justin Bieber (...well, I promised my little sister he was in the documentary and now she's a little pissed at me lol), etc.

This time I also noticed there's no recent Quincy Jones in the film. All the Quincy clips were from 25 years ago. I mean I'd really love to hear what he thinks of the album now, and I bet he had a lot of interesting little stories about MJ to tell us, why wasn't he part of the documentary?? And I really wanted to hear how hands-on Michael was as a co-producer of the album from Quincy also... confused

I hope the version they release on DVD is the 3 hour version Spike Lee promised initially...

...I'm sure this is a very common thing in the industry but this is a bit disappointing to me. Not only was Michael an awesome songwriter but he also seemed like he cared about giving chances to unknown talents and always open to collaborations....

She loves Michael, and his music to,so it was nice to be able to watch it with someone that enjoyed it as much as I did. smile

I really can't wait to see the extra 2 hours that is supposed to be on the DVD!

I guess that I'm one of the few people that didn't enjoy it that much, it was so edited that it was kinda annoying. They kept interviews with Chris brown and took out the parts with Stevie wonder and Ruben blades for instance, I don't understand that. From an editing perspective, I thought spike lee could have done a better job. It was still amazing to see Michael though and the love those people have for him, but I'm blaming myself for having watched parts of the longer version that was shown in Europe.

I really enjoyed the documentary!!! I really miss Michael sad There will never be another like him. The only 2 things I didnt like about it was how they tried to imply that Jeffrey Daniel was the master mind behind all of MJ moves... I didnt really like that because thats not true and although Daniel did dance with Michael some of the moves Michael came up with himself. Its pretty common knowledge some of his moves were popular dance moves during that particular era i.e moonwalk, etc He never claim he invented that.

Also, the whole bit on his passing I think was unnessary for the TV special. It made me really sad and turned it away from the BAD album. They could have just left that for the DVD.
