Is does sound a lot like Express Yourself.

This is a perfect example of why artists shouldn't hype up their own shit.

Now let's see if she gets ripped apart like Christina Aguilera did for NMT.

I doubt it. The same people dissing Christina's song will think Gaga's is the best thing since the ending of the Ice Age. lol

It don't take Stevie Wonder to see NMT was not a great song (only so-so) and that the video is what killed its momentum. The single, like Prince's Graffiti Bridge, would've been better had the video (in Prince's case, movie) not ever been released. Then the music truly could speak for itself.

I buy into LG's crap the same way I buy into Prince's. The absurd lyrics in this song, while we have covered the fac thtey are ENTIRELY ABSURD in some parts, are no more silly sounding than the ending to "Temptation" or the way P performed "God" on the PR tour. That shit aint normal. Can you imagine Babs Streisand or Mavis Staples doing that trilling crap on a piano?? Hell no. Would you even want to!?!

AMEN! Why is it that everything this woman releases gets instantly compared to Madonna? To me, "Alejandro" sounded nothing like "La Isla Bonita", and "Born This Way" sounds nothing like "Express Yourself". She is doing her own thing. Whenever a thread about her gets started on here, it blows up and goes from 0 to 500 views in 15 minutes...meaning people are most certainly interested in her. She's already broken Britney's record, and will probably break more soon. Let it be and enjoy the music. If you don't enjoy it, switch the station.

Any person who has the capability to hear can recognize how Lady Gaga ripped the vocal melody from Express Yourself. Next time you listen to it, try singing Express Yourself to it, more specifically the chorus. Though, Alejandro sounds more like Ace of Base rather than La Isla Bonita. That I will agree on.

I don't buy into a lot of what Prince does though. shrug I can do the same with Gaga. It is what it is. lol Both Prince and Gaga have done things that have underwhelmed me. Prince has had those moments and to me Gaga has her moment with this song despite its aim at presenting a positive message to people.

I'm not a fan of either Britney or Gaga but those who are saying Hold it against me is better is hilarious.

Born This Way has a better melody and the singer was actually singing... Come on now? lol

BTW, I like the 80's sound in this new single. I dunno. It sounds 80's to me. Probably because of it's similarity to Express Yourself.

listen to the first verse of LIB and then the first verse of Alejandro, throw in Don't Turn Around by Ace of Base and stir.

And if you don't hear the chorus of EY in the chorus of BDW after 2 listens...i wonder...

oh well to each their own. I actually don't like gaga but i think it's cool if she succeeds - her message is very positive and better than Britney spears, xxxtina, and RiRi and Katy Perry.

just gets on my nerves the way she rips off. yes madonna ripped off and continues to "pay homage" to many. but she often acknolwedges it openly and more infuses it into her work. Gaga so thinly veils her shit ... i mean the "Alejandro" video - it's like a montage you'd see at one of M's concerts practically! "Vogue" "Like A Prayer" "Deeper and "Deeper" "The Beast Within" intro - it's frame for frame, almost!

but the good news is MTV doesn't play videos anymore so trash like Katy Perry and then even the middle of the road/slightly better than Katy Perrys like Gaga won't ever come near the impact that Prince/Madonna/MJ had back in the day with their imagery and music, combined.

See, that's a fair post. I get your drift and you haven't insulted the entire listener base or even the artist in general. You presented your point without making it seem like you FELT you had to show your superiority (whether or not you felt you were superior at all). How encouraging!

I do hear vague bits of Ace of Base in "Alejandro" and I did the moment I heard the song. There are glimpses of "Born This Way" which appear to feel a lot like "Express Yourself" but they are vague, generic similarities. Gay disco track, gospel choir backing vocals, message about liberation. The difference is that "Express Yourself" is about being an individual in a romantic relationship. "Express Yourself" tells you to pick yourself up and if you don't love yourself, then your partner won't love you back.

"Born This Way" doesn't talk about that at all. That's not even close. "Born This Way" intimates that it's quite okay just how you are and people need to get the fuck over themselves. Basically.

It's a disparity in the message with only vague similarities musically. You couldnt say "Born This Way" ripped the melody cuz it didn't. You couldn't say they ripped the main riff or the hook, they didn't. They surely didn't rip the visual concept as in "Express Yourself", Madonna did not have what appears to be horns growing out of her body and Cleopatra eyes.

Aguilera's NMT got a lot of flak for being similar to "Express Yourself" because of the video - not the song. So this common recurring idea that girls are ripping off "Express Yourself" is ridiculous. Not only was it not Madonna's most famous or signature song, it's not even one of her best songs, and its getting WAY too much credit right now. Every fucking song on the radio sounds like it came from the 80s right now except the artists who were around in the 80s.

And why should she? Just about every female pop star -- from Britney Spears and Rihanna to Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera, whose 'Not Myself Tonight' video got raked over the coals last spring for borrowing imagery from the 'Express Yourself' video -- has been accused of aping Madonna at some point. At least when Gaga does it she has the class and pop sensibility to do it right. 'Born This Way' isn't a poor-man's retread of 'Express Yourself'; it takes the feel and concept of that empowerment anthem and ups the ante. Gaga cranks the bass and opens the door to everybody -- and it's something we should be celebrating her for.

Wow, this song is corny! The lyrics are just soo goddamn cheesy and her voice sounds like it always sounds. The production sounds like anything else on the radio. Does she ever do anythng different with her vocals? I've only heard about 12 of her songs so I don't know.

I listened to her albums (which I admit buying) and yeah she don't change much.

Come again? "Express Yourself" sounds similar to "Respect Yourself"? Are you fo real? lol

http://www.youtube.com/wa...Pxz9JXW8vE (Staple Singers)

no, that person just read Rolling Stone's "paid for by gaga's camp" article which says the same thing. google does wonders for folks with no musical ear!

I'm not the only one who thinks the chorus of both songs are similar, and I didn't even know rollingstone put that in their article until today...It's been on the web for a while now, both on youtube and other music sites. So Madonna changed "na na na" to "hey hey hey". I'm not saying it's an exact copy. Also the fact that Bruce Willis had a hit with a cover version of "Respect Yourself" 2 years before "Express Yourself" came out doesn't help Madonna's cause.

People wanna jump on Gaga for every little thing she does and compare it to Madonna which is fine, but they need to analyze Madonna's music more carefully as well.

What I will say is I like how Gaga is trying to instill confidence in kids who are considered "freaks" by the "in" crowds. Kids need that today. I just wish the song sounded better.

A lot of people are saying that "Born This Way" ripped off "Express Yourself" but they are not being specific. Maybe the percussion near the end of "Born This Way" is similar to the percussion in "Express Yourself" but other than that I'm not hearing the similarities. So, specifically, in what ways are the two songs similar?

Music is completely subjective in that one person may hear something where another person may not. Melodies can sometimes sound similar, when it may or may not have been the intention of the artist. Hell, Des'ree took Janet to court over "Got 'til It's Gone" being too similar to "Feel So High", and most people say that can't even hear the similarities. Both BTW and EY have the bombastic chorus and the dance beats, but that's it. As for Alejandro and La Isla Bonita, no fucking way are they at all similar. Alejandro is pure Ace of Base-influenced. That's it.

To be honest, I think the melody samples "Paradise City" from Guns 'n' Roses somewhat. I can kinda hear it.

Elton John is saying it's the next "I Will Survive", while some reviewer from SPIN magazine (I think) is lyrically comparing it to MJ's "Black or White".
