Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Is Madonna's ‘Express Yourself,’ Says Ryan Tedder

Feb 2011

OneRepublic frontman and prolific multi-platinum songsmith Ryan Tedder knows a thing or two about publishing credits, having written hits for the likes of Beyonce (“Halo”), Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love”) and Jordin Sparks (“Battlefield”). So what does his expert ear say about Lady Gaga's latest single?

"Born This Way] is ‘Express Yourself,’” he said at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy gala held on Saturday night, chiming in on what’s already become a heated debate: did Gaga rip off Madonna for her new single?

“Me and my wife drove around today and that song came on KIIS-FM every hour on the hour. We were singing ‘Express Yourself’ over the melody! If I wrote ‘Express Yourself’ and I heard that song, I would be calling my manager five minutes later… If Madonna's not getting credit on it, then I would just say, be careful.”

Gaga’s new song, the title track to her forthcoming album, due out in May, was released on February 11 and produced by Fernando Garibay, whom Tedder calls a “phenomenal producer” and a friend, which is why he also cautions not to jump to any conclusions. “Maybe they credited Madonna, honestly,” Tedder said. “It happens. There are a lot of successful hits out there where you read the liner notes and realize there’s a part of another song. Like Daft Punk: as individual and unique as they are, their four biggest hits are all samples.”
And even if “Born This Way” is somewhat derivative, Tedder adds, it doesn’t diminish his admiration for his labelmate. “I love Gaga, I legitimately do,” he said. “I don't question her individuality or the message of the song… I'm not gonna say it's not a hit -- it’s catchy! Gaga is Gaga, she could sing happy birthday right now.”

Is Lady Gaga's Born This Way A Rip-Off of A Madonna Classic?

Feb 12, 2011

Lady Gaga's little monsters waited months for a taste of the superstar singer's next album. But, when she released Born This Way Friday, a little bit of controversy emerged.

The long-awaited single quickly drew a slew of comparisons to Madonna's Express Yourself and Vogue, so much so that when the Twitterverse went ablaze with reactions to Gaga's single, Express Yourself became a trending topic as well.

"Just listened to a clip of Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' and I gotta say...sounds a lot like 'Express Yourself' from Madonna," Chris Daughtry tweeted. "OK. Good. A lotta peeps are saying the same thing so maybe I won't get raked over the coals:) I thought I was crazy for a second. And by the way...I'm not dogging it. Haven't even heard it all...that was just my first impress."

Even Madonna's brother, Chris Ciccone, got in on the action (in not so nice of a way).

"All I can say is 'What the F**K!, Ciccone said in an interview with Radar Online. "It sounds just like Express Yourself—I can't believe it to tell you the truth."

Meanwhile Gaga fans like Snooki, Khloe Kardashian and Paramore's Hayley Williams sang the song's praises.

"Speaking of liberation, I just heard "Born This Way" and loved it," Williams tweeted. DON'T BE A DRAG JUST BE A QUEEN."

So what did the Queen of Pop have to say about this pseudo-controversy?

Well, nothing just yet.

And while Saturday, Madonna's You tube page was updated with her 1989 live performance of Express Yourself on the MTV Video Music Awards, don't look for an all-out feud with this duo.

Practically everyone in pop music is ripping off the 80s these days anyway lol It's not surprising that Gaga's song sounds alot like "Express Yourself".

Gaga had made a career of rehashing everything 80s theme, so this Madonna-esque song isn't a surprise.

When I heard the first minute, the first thing that popped in my head was "Express Yourself" and after reading all your comments, I think the greater majority agree as well.

You know what's odd about this song? It's brought Madonna back to the limelight again! falloff Even her BROTHER was like "fuck Gaga, she ripped off my sister!" falloff I'm sure Madonna's just laughing at all of this. lol Same with Gaga lol

I heard this song is actually a ballad and the one that was released Friday was a remix all because she wanted to compete with Britney. Now don't shoot me, this is what I just heard. lol

Gawd. I can't stand her. I have a feeling I would like her so much better if she wasn't so out there for attention.

Worst: Lady Gaga thanks one pop star, forgets another
Upon claiming her Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, Lady Gaga made one unexpected addition to her list of thank-yous: Whitney Houston. "I wanted to thank Whitney Houston, because when I wrote Born This Way, I imagined she was singing it," Gaga revealed. Somewhere, Madonna is awaiting some props — or, potentially, songwriting royalties — for Born This Way, which is being criticized for its similarities to Express Yourself.

Toronto Sun: The ever-freaky Lady Gaga, who was carried down the red carpet in a giant egg before advising us all “don’t be a drag, just be a queen” and whipping her crazy-long ponytail during her new second-rate Madonna knockoff Born This Way (so much for not being a drag).

Houston Chronicle:
After so much hype, Gaga's performance was underwhelming, and all but an homage to Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour - cascading ponytail, staging and all. (The song itself is a middling recycle of Madge's Express Yourself.) Gaga took home short form video, female pop vocal and pop vocal album. In the evening's oddest acceptance speech, she thanked Whitney Houston as the vocal inspiration behind Born This Way. (Sure, whatever you say.)
