Can Janet ever score a radio hit again?

That question has been on my mind lately.

Especially after the letdown that was "Nothing" (which by the way could be compared to a blind date that I was excited about for weeks but turned out to be a complete non event that I'd rather forget). Don't even get me started on that video. hrmph

I don't know. The consistency of flops just keep a coming.

"Feedback" did moderately well at radio, however, the non interest/disdain which "Luv", "Rock With U", "Can't B Good", "Make Me" and "Nothing" have all received leaves me worried that Janet has offically entered the late 80's Diana Ross period of her career (albeit with better material) where she's still considered a superstar/legend yet US radio completely ignores her.

The whole thing is baffling really. She's still incredibly beautiful, her music is not any worse than it was in the late 90's/early 00's, yet for some strange reason, she's not a hot commodity on radio anymore.

She just needs stronger material than the average cuts she has offered recently; damn, with a song worth of "Together Again" she would be all over the radio all over again!

In other words, she needs a real comeback single...

I've been saying for awhile she's been treated like diana ross was 20 years ago, so let's compare the pattern. Her comeback album will be in 2015 and she'll have a dance hit like take me higher

I enjoyed her movie, but I don't like nothing very much, the video is horrible and the song is average

I could personally care less if she gets one or not, won't change my love for her. I don't look to the radio anymore for new singles by my favorite acts. It's just online now. smile

and I don't want Janet to have a radio hit. That would require her to conform to the norm and make synth, repetitive shitty music. I like that she does her own thing a la "Nothing". No one else is making ballads now. She don't curr

i don't get why all her fans hate "nothing" so much. now, i'm not a fan
but i do like some of her singles and such and "nothing" has quite a nice
melody imo. the lyrics are ok and her singing is just fine.

at least she's actually singing instead of mumbling and whispering about
touching herself.

as a non janet hardcore, i think it's a very nice song and one of her
most honest things in quite a long time.

Diana Ross still had hits in Europe when her star faded in the states - Janet flops everywhere.

I don't understand it - 'make me' and 'rock with u' were great pop tunes with quality videos that should have had mass appeal. It could be argued that SB ruined things for her in the US or that she didn't promote enough in Europe. I thought the latter was true at first but 'make me' still still flopped after it got exposure from the x-factor performance.

I can only say that people are not interested in her anymore - a real shame, she could have had some great eras. I hope i'm wrong though.

it's happening to everyone, i guess. since mtv became nothing more but
a reality tv channel and everyone is online, chasing the latest trends
no one is really paying attention anymore to the acts we grew up with.

they are obviously still making enough money to keep recording and have
their music out there but beyond the hardcore audience and a few people
who will pick something up on the very low buzz that their new releases
create, no one seems to care anymore.

radio, tv, they only hone in on them if there's trouble or scandal or if
the talkshows can get them to show up for a two minute interview in which
they ask those people dull, repetitive questions that make them feel like
"wtf why am i even here again?"

not until they are gone does everyone jump on the media hype bandwagon to
shout how much they loved them and cared about them etc. and after that,
nothing.

and that's the old 'royalty' kind of stars we're talking about. the 'new'
celebrities won't even have that foundation to fall back onto once they
place a foot wrong.

it's just the times that have changed and the global marketing that has
done a complete 360 in some places.

that, and the possibility that young people today just don't like them
that much. perhaps they find it more easy to identify with younger acts
or something. i don't know.

Your first sentence is laughable.

and "Make me" was released the day she performed on X-Factor. It wasn't even mentioned after she performed.

'Make Me' got play in the UK on 'Galaxy', the worst, most popular radio station going. Still, decent rotation on an awful station. Is that a good thing? shrug

There is no need to be all defensive and catty.

I don't see how my first sentence is laughable - Janet hasn't had a top ten hit in the UK since 'feel it boy'

Whereas when Diana had a major #1 hit worldwide with 'chain reaction' after her popularity faded in the states.

It's the facts my friend and the truth sometimes hurt.

And there is no excuses for 'make me' not making the UK top 40 - it had decent airplay which is better than none even from a crappy radio station and was still performed on prime tv in front of millions of people - people knew it was out.

She was featured on that track and it reached that high because of her.

"Chain Reaction" was released in 1985. Do you want to compare Janet's hits to Diana Ross's? LOL! Janet's less than stellar success as of now is something Diana could only wish of having.

No, its not - "my friend".

Idk. You should take that up with people in the UK. I suppose they don't have good taste.

You’re so disillusioned to what’s going on outside America and so quick to label me as some kind of Janet hater when it’s the complete opposite in reality. I am a huge Janet fan and do not own one Diana Ross CD but I know that facts.

I’m not obviously comparing Janet’s and Diana’s success at present – Diana’s last top ten hit in the US was ‘missing you’ in 1984 whereas in UK she had 16 top 40 hits including a #1 and #2. Janet has only had 3 top 20 hits in the UK since her popularity declined in the USA in 2004. i'm just stating the facts - i'm not even expressing an opinion on the matter so there is no need to get defensive.

Discipline was a good album, but Island Def Jam dropped the ball with the next single. It definitely had more hits left on it.

Yes, Janet will have radio hits again. "Feedback" was all over the radio. "Nothing" is just a soundtrack song. I'm not taking it seriously.

Where in my post did I call you a Janet hater? and how am I disillusioned with what's going on outside of America?

Is it because I'm not dubbing her an international flop? falloff Why state the obvious? Janet's main market has always been America. I think she should've expanded her market like other acts but meh.

Correct. Since 2004. Point? When was Janet ever hot commodity in Europe? In the 90's after that...not so much. Oh and Janet has 41 top 40 hits in the UK.

"Nothing" is being added to several Urban AC stations across the country. It was added to 11 stations this week alone (the most for the format). We'll see how it does.

Your first post implied that i'm a Ross fan and that i was dissing janet.

At least janet had some form of hits prior to 2004 in Europe - so there is an obvious change in her popularity here.

You're a broken record. i used to think your persona was some form of a parody but now I think you truly are beginning to believe your baseless and absurd posts.

I never implied you were a Ross fan nor did I even assume you dissed Janet. You obviously lack reading comprehension.

Um ok. Can you tell me what happened in the year 2004? HINT: a big event that scarred her image.

What's so absurd about my previous post? I guess you couldn't form a proper response so you decided to personally attack me.
