Discipline was a good album, but Island Def Jam dropped the ball with the next single. It definitely had more hits left on it.

Yes, Janet will have radio hits again. "Feedback" was all over the radio. "Nothing" is just a soundtrack song. I'm not taking it seriously.

I think Janet was the one that dropped the ball on the singles and the whole album.

I'm not sure that's 100% of the truth. The word was there was a lot of disagreement on what the next single was going to be, and both sides just hit a ball. I suppose either could have just relented and given in.

can she? yes. now, will the public/media let her? we'll have to see. shrug
she could've easily scored at least 5 hits from her previous 3 albums. and i'll say it again... "Make Me" had HIT written all over it. her new song "Nothing" does just that for me. but whatever.

i just want a new album, a complete music video collection on dvd, and an official dvd release of her last tour. hit or no hit!

pray

Um ok. Can you tell me what happened in the year 2004? HINT: a big event that scarred her image.

Yes, there was a huge disagreement between Janet and LA Reid because he wanted "Rock Wit U" as the 2nd single and Janet wanted "Luv". Of course, LA got his way and "Rock Wit U" became the 2nd single. It flopped. Then I think "Luv" was released right after but the album was pretty much dead by then. It didn't help that Kenneth Crear was her manager at the time too.

I think Janet could've worked something out.

Diana Ross still had hits in Europe when her star faded in the states - Janet flops everywhere.

I don't understand it - 'make me' and 'rock with u' were great pop tunes with quality videos that should have had mass appeal. It could be argued that SB ruined things for her in the US or that she didn't promote enough in Europe. I thought the latter was true at first but 'make me' still still flopped after it got exposure from the x-factor performance.

I can only say that people are not interested in her anymore - a real shame, she could have had some great eras. I hope i'm wrong though.

Your first sentence is laughable.

and "Make me" was released the day she performed on X-Factor. It wasn't even mentioned after she performed.

Yea, you're wrong.

oh no she didn't biggrin

You’re complaining about me personally attacking you?

Ahhh can you hear the violin playing?

I suggest you look up what implying means before questioning my reading comprehension.

Then again why am I wasting my time responding to your posts? Are you the same person who regularly calls Janet a great singer ? Even Jermaine Dupri knows that it true.

when you say radio hit i assume you are talking about pop radio , call on me was huge on urban radio. but to answer the question i doubt it,and janet fans shouldnt care about that.im glad that she seems to be one of the few pop stars able to carve out a successful second career in films. i would be very happy if she made movies and released independant music every few years, no videos,no major promo,no hot producers of the moment contributions...just janet/jam&lewis cool

Oh did that hurt your feelings? comfort I still don't see how stating that your comment was laughable is calling you a Diana fan or a Janet hater. I think you're reading too much into things.

and how do you justify someone's subjective opinion by referencing Janet's ex!?! nuts

I think she could have too. The "Rock Wit U" single was great, and the video was fun. I bought it on iTunes. I'm not sure "Luv" would have been a great single that early on. It could have been the 4th single, with the 3rd being a ballad (perhaps "Can't Be Good"). "2Nite" would have been a great 2nd single. Another dance song, keep the momentum going that "Feedback" brought.

We can theorize all day, but ultimately, it was just handled badly on everyone's part. Kind of pisses me off.

I believe you're the one that brought up the whole personal attacking thing first. So i would assume i hurt your feelings first.

I see those english literature classes at high school were useful for something.

I think it needed more interest from people. The reason why Rihanna's album is still selling and gaining momentum is because of the interest. There wasn't much interest after "Hard" (peaked at #8) was released but it picked up once "Rude Boy" became a single. The label (IDJ) wasn't promoting her album much either. Janet's album just died right after "Feedback" was released. Like it was destined to flop.

Well, to get back on topic rolleyes

I think Janet can score a radio hit if she really wants to.

She needs to redefine her sound with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Why abandon your own sound in the first place? The sound that made you successful. Janet can easily regain her audience (Like I said - her fan base is divided now) by redefining her sound into something more mature for her age but at the same time fun for all ages. Thats how her music used to be. Idk why she thought bringing JD or Darkchild into the mix could workout for her nor do I understand why she thought making music that artists half her age is making was a good idea. I think she needs some guidance. As much as her fans hate to admit, Rene gave her good business advice unlike the troll. She needs someone like that again. If not that, just don't mix business with pleasure - again! I think she made the smart decision of staying out of the music scene for awhile and carving out a career in movies. Hopefully, when she gets back to working on music - she goes independent since all these labels don't know what works for her. I'm sure she knows what she wants more than these lame labels.

And after 28 years of dealing with mainstream labels, I think the last thing Janet wants to do is to put her trust fully in a label that has no place for a 43-year-old legend. When you get past 40, some labels deliberately give you the finger. confused

I agree with this post.

The only way she can have decent success is if she goes back to Jimmy and Terry. I also think she should go independent. Its kind of pointless to be under a label when you're 40 years old. They would rather push their 20- something-year olds than her.

If she was smart, she wouldn't deal with a major. I hope her people around her convince her not to go that route.

She needs to talk with Tamia about how to do it independently. Last I read, Tamia did her last album on her own and got a distribution deal. They say she made more money on an album selling 50,000 copies vs an album selling 100,000. Janet should know that her fanbase will always buy her albums. Does anyone know how many albums she's sold since 2004?

That question has been on my mind lately.

Especially after the letdown that was "Nothing" (which by the way could be compared to a blind date that I was excited about for weeks but turned out to be a complete non event that I'd rather forget). Don't even get me started on that video. hrmph

I don't know. The consistency of flops just keep a coming.

"Feedback" did moderately well at radio, however, the non interest/disdain which "Luv", "Rock With U", "Can't B Good", "Make Me" and "Nothing" have all received leaves me worried that Janet has officially entered the late 80's Diana Ross period of her career (albeit with better material) where she's still considered a superstar/legend yet US radio completely ignores her.

The whole thing is baffling really. She's still incredibly beautiful, her music is not any worse than it was in the late 90's/early 00's, yet for some strange reason, she's not a hot commodity on radio anymore.

I say "screw" radio. When she hits your city for a show or tour, that show always sells well. She does not need radio. Radio "needs" her. I'd like to see her do something with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis again, I'd buy that, then.

not with contemporary r&b and its producers. her audience is aging queens (myself included) and aiming her material at the 15 year old r&b audience isn't going to work. they could not care less. she doesn't really seem to be that into it anyway.

i never understand when artists get older and keep chasing the teenage market. sometimes it works out and they get a fluke out of it (Madonna's "4 Minutes" for example) but usually it's very unsatisfying artistically and unsatisfying for fans. I'm talking about all of them. Janet, Madonna, Prince, Mariah....

on the other hand, these older artists are accustomed to the kind of lifestyle and record deals that require a big hit to keep them neck deep in Versace. so I understand that. but at some point, they have to realize they're wasting their time "keeping up" with what's hot out there by younger, newer acts. they have built a fanbase that is very loyal and they could keep selling to no matter what they WANT to do, and it rarely comes across that these attempts at hip, contemporary sounds and styles is what they really WANT to do at all.

I think radio would still rather play a great hit by an established artist rather than a new unknown.

And "Feedback" ruled radio here. I woke up to "Rock Wit U" on my alarm clock many mornings too. It was on a pop station that preferred dance hits over rock ones.
