There's no way to objectively answer this question. I like Michael, but he isn't the greatest in my book, but I can understand why he is to others.

The Only? I think Beatles and Elvis fans might differ on that point.

MJ is definitely a popular kids artist no doubt, but i have a feeling you guys will outgrow him when you grow up...or at least should

i'm 23...been a fan since i was little. should I outgrow him?

Should you outgrow his music? No.

Should you outgrow the "Moonwalker" video? Yes.

lol

Stage presence? No. I think Prince and Madonna have him beaten in that regard, as do others. Again, just my opinion.

Prince probably is/was better than Michael when it came to musicianship, but Prince doesn't have that "it" that took Michael to a whole different level. Unfair? Maybe, but that's the way it is.

I think Prince is better than MJ and has that "it". I think if Prince hadn't been running around in his underwear talking about he knew a girl named Nikki who was a sex fiend, that probably would have made the difference in his career. Prince was not kid friendly or religious friendly and that narrowed his listening audience considerably. Look at how many children love MJ....because they can actually be allowed to listen to MJ. LOL lol

That's on Prince, Prince wanted to be who he wanted to be and that's cool. MJ wanted to appeal to the masses and he did.

Well isn't that the same for Michael? He wanted to be what he wanted to be and he did. Michael did the music he wanted to do regardless of the reasons behind it, so did Prince. Michael was not into moaning on stage and performing in his underwear, but Prince was. I just hate people who use Michael's commercial success against him just because their favorite artists didn't even come close to that commercial level.

Like I said, I love Prince, but I personally do not think he is on Michael's level. And no, I don't think he was liked by children just because their parents allowed them to listen to him. He was just an extremely likeable person, unlike Prince. Is not a secret that Prince can be a reall donkey hole, and I have personally witnessed some of his "moods" when I attended one of his concerts a couple of years ago.
I am simply better than you...end of story.

nothing wrong with that but there's nothing wrong with liking his 90's and later work catalog. Dangerous is one of my favorite albums. I like history. I like some cuts on bodf as well as invincible....love butterflies love. one of my top songs of his. It doesn't make anyone less of a fan or floon if they like his later work. We all grew up with michael whether u were born in the 1950s to the early 1990s.

Well, you were a child but I was already grown when that video first came out so I didn't grow up with it. I will never forget, I was working my first steady job at a convenience store and I bought it on the day of it's release. I got off that evening around 11:30 and there was a video store in the same shopping center that was open until midnight.

I got home around 1:00 a.m. and popped the tape in. It started out real good until it got to the children in the video for "Bad". I said..."What in the hell is this?!". Then it got even worse with those animated characters on that studio lot. And then even worse as he was running around playing in the fields with the children and the dog. It looked like a scene straight out of a Disney film. And then he turned into a race car, and then a robot, and then a space ship. Hell, I felt like I was watching Mister Rogers in the Land of Make Believe. lol

Yeah I think the Beatles & Elvis got worldwide appeal too. That's why the media always compared the three. They're by far the only entertainers besides MUHAMMAD ALI to be embraced on a big worldwide scale. I'm sure there were others tho but those four stood out. KIDS don't know who the Beatles & Elvis are, maybe that's why MJ got them on that, because the adults let them play MJ while the others were avoided for OBVIOUS reasons...
[Edited 9/8/09 20:33pm]

michael was bigger than the beatles and elvis....most likely combined.... and most famous person ever. love him or hate....you cannot deny this fact.

Yup. His appeal was much broader. It was Dick Clark who said Michael was the ONLY star that appealed to White, Black, n every color in between and every age from the very young to the very old. Also, The Beatles n Elvis never experienced worldwide fame like MJ. Although mainstream media would have you believe this to be. For instance, they're not embraced in Africa.
I think MJ was 'the greatest' because of this broad appeal imo. I mean during Thriller 2 year olds to 92 year olds were in love with Mike. Saw it in my own family. How does one explain this appeal? has it ever happened before. Don't think so.

Sorry to burst bubbles, but isolation will stunt your growth.

The Beatles are currently the #2 best selling artists of THIS decade, behind Emimen and maybe bumped to #1 with the release of their much hoopla-ed re-mastered boxed set on Wednesday.

That's 40 years after they called it quits, ..and are still the most respected and popular pop music artists to date. YES

MJ has his thing and the Beatles and Elvis theirs, and maybe each attracts polar opposite fans. There is something for everybody, but MJ is not everything to everybody, especially not the greatest.

To me he was. & about The Beatles and Elvis. I can say that The Beatles do appeal to the younger generation depending on the demographic but most people my age are not that familiar with Elvis' music.
